  • *This episode of Podcrushed was recorded prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.* Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries) stops by the pod to share recollections from her early adolescence, including her time as a substitute on the national Canadian gymnastics team, navigating Canadian culture under a strict Bulgarian upbringing, and recognizing how recreating family-seeking patterns in romantic relationships was preventing her from finding real love. I don’t think Nina gets enough praise for playing sooo many roles in TVD! Her acting is INCREDIBLE. The scenes where the audience was supposed to not know if Elena or Katherine was on the screen, but Nina’s acting was soo good that you could instantly tell

    Love Nina. Loved her in Vampire Diaries. I was so mad when she left in the 6th season. I was a teenager back then. I didn’t know better. But now being an adult and seen her as an adult and knowing that she is in a good place right now mentally, physically and professionally is great! I would love to meet her someday. She has such a nice energy thru the screen, I can imagine her energy in person.

    I really felt her last statement about cultural differences. I grew up making myself invisible or trying to fit in because I was so often the only brown person in the room, and I had such a different frame of reference culturally. In a way I was often dealing with extremes - in school with people who have never been exposed to my South Asian culture, then at home trying to explain American culture to my immigrant parents. I often felt caught in the middle of this push and pull.

    I appreciate Nina’s response to the discussion of her beauty. This is in no way to put her down, she’s gorgeous. But she’s right, she’s being styled and dressed by professionals, posed in photoshopped images, and presented to young viewers as “look at this beautiful woman in this show/ movie”. We’re not taught to see beauty as this inherent, Creator-given human quality. Capitalism has made beauty something you buy from too many businesses to count because you’re ashamed that you don’t look like the photoshopped lady in the magazine. It takes conscious change to go from “Nina Dobrev is so hot, I should just give up” to “Wow, Nina has such a warm smile, I want to hear about what brings her joy.”

    • @anamikakhan593
      @anamikakhan593 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Adding to that, I HATE how there's a trend out there right now that's constantly trying to prove that EVERY celeb out there has gotten some surgery simply because they all look different (obviously because of aging as Nina shared). And yes in some cases it's quite obvious that certain celebs have done something, but it's mostly alot of celebs who have literally just aged and nothing else. And it just frustrates me so much when I see that.

Instead of comparing ourselves or downplaying our own looks, let's focus on genuinely celebrating the beauty of others. Our compliments can have a more positive impact when we emphasize their unique qualities and make them feel special. By sharing genuine and kind words, we can ensure that our compliments leave a lasting, positive impression without unintentionally causing any negative feelings. Let's spread happiness and build each other up through sincere appreciation and admiration.

  • @AnneORat

    This is so sweet! I think it's great to hear actors/actresses' opinions on how acting has shaped their lives and in Nina's case also not having any connections to the industry beforehand. I'm sure there was more she could've talked about in terms of how (especially) actresses get treated in Hollywood but that surely is a very sensitive subject. I loved your questions for her. It's so refreshing to hear women talk more about their experiences, deep conversations about love, about seeking healthy relationships and all that.
    And about the comments that Nina sometimes gets on her instagram, I remember seeing that when I looked her up and was shocked that people write such vile things in the first place. I have the feeling that women get somehow punished for aging or looking different to how we look in our teenage years compared to 30. It's like you're damned if you do cosmetic procedures but also damned if you don't do it. It seems like you can't win.

    That pretty privilege question was so out of pocket lol I think Nina is that last person that deserves a question like that & it definitely threw her off.
    And didn’t the same host who asked this question- make a comment before she came in that it doesn’t matter if she herself put make up on or not bc regardless she will not look good compared to Nina sitting next to her???? Sounds like it came from insecurities to me. Embarrassing….

      Huh? Pretty priviledge is a big thing and Nina was THE beauty standard when TVD came out. Every girl wanted to be her. It wasn't an accusation or an insult, she was opening a discussion.

    • @loverxo1
      @loverxo1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sarasthoughts ohh please it is not. people love to throw that around when they see someone good looking being successful. Just bc someone is pretty does not mean they were just given the part or had it easy. You might have thought she was “the beauty standard” but others might not have. I’ve never looked at any character and wanted to be them or felt ashamed bc they were good looking. Y’all need to work on your self confidence and self esteem and just enjoy the show.

  • @onpurposewithkarina

    These questions on love and vampire diaries are so bland and predictable. I wish I learned more on things that aren’t commonly talked about: her childhood, her family relations, upbringing, other acting roles besides Vampire Diaries, future goals, challenges and victories. This is missing DEPTH :/ the beauty question was so awkward! Why not focus more on character and mindset and experience??

    Nina, you could possibly have a connective tissue disease called Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, it causes "double jointedness" called hypermobility, and easy dislocations! Part of the diagnostic test includes asking if you've ever been able to do the splits now or as a child, showing off your cool joint tricks, stuff like that. That also extends to more than joints, but also skin tissue, blood vessel fragility, especially in the heart. Might be worth investigating with a doctor it could put your shoulder dislocations and flexibility as a teen in perspective, preventing against future issues with your heart as you age (which can be very common.) :)

    • @lieselotmauroo9808
      @lieselotmauroo9808 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heart is more an issue with the vascular type and maybe other types. Though we do need a check up every 3 years and as we age we can evolve problems with the heart or blood vessels, hEDS is actually very different from like vascular eds or other types

    My biggest problem with this podcast is that there are 3 moderators which is already a crowd, and they interrupt each other all the time... It frustrates me when someone can't finish the sentence. But even a bigger crime is having a 4th person, which is A GUEST, and interrupting them as well. I tried watching a couple of these podcast, and I would every time give up in the first 10 minutes because of this... even though I was genuinely interested in the guest star...
    I hope this gets better as you progress with this project...

    The pretty privilege question was ridiculous. Name a time in history where a male actor gets asked that same question. No wonder Nina was so baffled. It also implies that she didn't work hard for her roles and things just got handed to her. Never mind that she is still fighting for film and TV roles and some of her shows have succeeded and some have gotten cancelled early...
