    Hi everyone, welcome to Abbey's Kitchen! In today’s episode of TH-camr reviews, we’ll be taking a look at health influencer and Board Certified Family Medicine Doctor, Dr. Mike.

    I want to apologize to those who expressed concern with my partnership with Pique tea. I have to be honest, when I was approached to partner with them to discuss these two teas (matcha and turmeric), I had already tried these two, but was completely unfamiliar with the rest of their line or any other claims they make on their website. The information I did share wasn’t woo and is evidence based (re: antioxidant levels in matcha and turmeric). None of this makes a tea magic, and I would never pretend like it does, but there are well documented benefits to getting some of these unique polyphenols in the diet. I’m a dietitian, I’m allowed and I do often speak to these benefits. Also on a personal note, if I can get in more water and cut back on my coffee intake right now (which is not so good for my insomnia tbd), and do it quickly and conveniently - then I am all for it.
    But I chose to discuss these two particular teas in the partnership because I genuinely enjoy them. Having said that, I should have checked my blind spots and look into the verbiage used on the website to sell some of their other products that I don’t even know anything about. Obviously, you would not see me promote any detox tea or weight loss tea or anything else problematic like that. These two SKUs however are tasty to me and are nutrient-dense so it was a partnership that made sense to me.
    Yes, I do understand that this is a premium product since the ingredients are typically more expensive and the way its processed and packaged for convenience carries added price. I understand that is not accessible to everyone, and I should have honestly considered that. I regret that I didn’t.
    But at its core, there is nothing problematic, “detoxy”, or “magic” about these two products or the claims I made about them. They’re just two convenient and tasty teas with the bonus that they do have some health benefits.
    I hope you know that I continue to have a critical eye out for misinformation and that the specific products I do partner with and promote are ones I genuinely use and like.

      @@B_27 totally fair criticism , and something for me to 100% consider better for future. It was admittedly an oversight on my part as I was already using these products after having them sent to me she’s ago. I wasn’t even aware of the fasting claims on the website as I only looked at the information for these two teas I tried. But agree, that type of language IS problematic and definitely not something I would agree to say on behalf of a tea. I always considered the legitimacy of the specific statements I say about a product, plus whether or not it’s something I enjoy or would feed my family but this has been a good reminder to consider other angles when partnering with a brand as well! I’m still learning so thanks for your patience.

      Metabolic health is not the only factor, increase weight can also cause increase stress to weight bearing joints.

      It is when he's not entirely sure if the reason someone's unhealthy it's because they're overweight. you just can't tell everybody to lose weight and made them feel like shit about themselves... that's why there are other medical approaches to someone's health.

      @@manuelabarreiro6153 exactly. I was told by previous doctors that my chest pains were because I needed to lose weight. Without any test. My most recent doctor first question when I shared the pain was “do you have anxiety?” And now I’m seeing a therapist and it’s helped go away.

      @@manuelabarreiro6153 being overweight/obese (as in high weight and high body-fat) increases the risk of over 200 different diseases (including CANCER and cardiac problems). Telling someone that being obese is healthy is the same as telling someone that smoking is healthy. It is simply not.

    I think the term fat phobia is going to lose all meaning if it's misapplied so freely. I wish people would differentiate between an actual bigoted remark and a neutral opinion that was formed based on facts and observations.

      Thank you! Coming from a pretty secure chubby girl, talking about weightloss/fatloss or wanting to lose weight/fat and the diets that can lead to either isn't fatphobic in itself. There's a big difference between being intentionally offensive towards bigger bodies and acknowledging the issues that can (and do) come with specific lifestyles and body types

      With that being said, I don't watch Dr. Mike so maybe he is fatphobic and I don't know and, I definitely think there is a weight bias in the medical field that needs to be addressed. But I don't like the term fatphobia being thrown around when someone is being anything but

      @@BlueArrowe Yeah. Not hiring someone because they're overweight is fat phobia. Harassing them because of their weight is fat phobia. Something like cropping them out of your wedding photos because they're overweight is fatphobic. But saying that having excess fat carried a greater risk of certain conditions is not fat phobia.

      Hmm. I don't agree, because just like with racism, fat phobia is baked into our culture, and there can be people who think they being advocates, but still have micro aggressions towards fat people in them, and they don't even know they are doing it. So maybe they need to hear it's not ok. We need to understand that everyone has a different body shape and size, and just try to let everyone achieve the best health they can without focusing on their weight as much as their vitals and their actions, like eating a healthful varied diet, and getting a normal amount of exercise.

    i love him. he's pro-health, not fat phobic. he's actually the one doctor who doesn't judge and actually encourages me to improve my health and take more control of my own life and eating choices.

      I disagree to some extent. If you only talk about weight loss for health reasons but not weight gain for health reasons, you're fat phobic. There are tons of people who suffer from anorexia and bulimia who are dangerously skinny and they need to gain weight (just one example of people who need to gain weight for health reasons). Those patients are more at risk than obese patients. Those two eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all eating disorders, binging included. So if your only problem is people who "need" to lose weight, you're not pro-health. If you include dangerously skinny people in your conversation and how they need to gain weight, you can call yourself pro-health. I've never heard him talk about this side of the problem/conversation, so if you have links to videos where he talks about it, that would be great. But if he doesn't, he seems very much fat phobic.

      @@CreativeCookie94 I agree that he could be more inclusive in the way you suggest. However. Health is not just about being dead or alive. I am not saying this to minimize the struggles of those suffering from restrictive EDs. I am saying this because being significantly overweight effs up your body and therefore quality of life in a multitude of ways, starting with your bones and joints, but also diabetes type 2, and such. Considering how many more people are serverely overweight than severely underweight, I feel it is justified to generally pay more attention to weight LOSS for health. Acknowledging an overall trend doesn’t take away from the experiences and needs of those that this overall trend doesn’t apply to.

      @@Iwasjustwondering89 I kind of agree but I think you need to do some research on those restrictive eating disorders if you believe they benefit your bones and joints or your body in general. If you don't eat or make yourself throw it all up, you don't get enough nutrients your body absolutely needs to be healthy and function properly. Also, not everyone who suffers from those EDs is severely underweight, that's a misconception. It's just easier to see when they're that skinny. There are people who seem to be at a healthy weight but in reality they're anorexic or bulimic. It takes a long time to "look" that way, you don't get there within weeks. On top of that not everyone who suffers from those EDs will end up looking like that even if they've been suffering from the mental illness (because that's really what it is) for years or even decades. We really need to stop judging people by the way they look. Eating habits and lifestyle are way more important to determine health. You can be overweight without eating everything you see. Happened to me. Didn't get even close to enough sleep for over a year, tried intermittent fasting which stressed my body even more and made me develop insulin resistance which made me gain weight even though I wasn't eating more than usual. My body just couldn't handle the carbs anymore and that made me gain weight. A lot of people have undiscovered health conditions that can affect their weight, or they have to take medication that makes them gain weight, genetics, too much stress, not enough sleep etc. Telling someone to simply lose weight, isn't the best thing if you haven't checked for those things. I'm not saying that's what Dr. Mike does! I don't know because I've never been his patient, I was talking in general now.

The general health videos have always been in relation to a fitter lifestyle, his intention has always been health over looks. When i say i love how he encourages me, i mean he encourages me to take control of my own life. Just because one conversation doesn't include all sides of comparisons doesn't mean the one side discussed is wrong or given supremacy. He's pro health in that sense. He's not a dietician, he's a family medicine doctor. Period.

    From my perspective, when weight loss is discussed as a byproduct (so to speak) of having and maintaining a healthy lifestyle then I don’t think it’s ‘fat phobic’ it’s when weight loss becomes the sole focus and health becomes an afterthought when that meaning shifts.

      As someone who is overweight - yes! I have had fatphobic doctors, and those who simply mention my weight as a confounding factor are NOT on that list - just the ones who push on weight loss to solve unrelated issues (like my depression and intestinal issues I've had since I was a skinny kid lol)

    It would be better if Pique sold their tea as a reusable container that you can single serve from instead of single use packets. We need to break away from normalizing single use everything. Especially since something like matcha has been sold as a container since the dawn of time.

      H T get a reusable tea strainer. They’re really cheap. They even make them so you can use them in a keurig. Or get a cheap french press. For hundreds of years people have been drinking tea without the use of single use tea bags.

      @@HT-pl8du The internet is full of a million tea infusers! Some are legit adorable too. Also, you can get a mate straw, which has a strainer built right in the straw. I like using loose leaf tea and a strainer because I like strong tea so I can customize the amount. Many spice shops also sell loose leaf tea so you can go buy in bulk and not even worry about wasting packaging too.

      @@HT-pl8du Pique tea is doesn't have leaves in the traditional sense. The tea is powdered and dissolves in water. They could have it in a container for you to just use a spoon and mix into water. You have to use a spoon anyways to stir it.

    I don’t know why all the hate on skipping breakfast!! I personally feel horrible eating 3 meals a day, bloating, gas, constipation, sluggish etc. I always thought you had to eat breakfast because everyone says it’s the most important meal. The real thing is to listen to your body and sometimes intuitive eating looks like ‘skipping’ meal and bulking up the other two and maybe throwing in a snack. Just like Dr. Mike I naturally eat about eight hours in the day and start off with just coffee in the morning

      This is how my husband is, but if I miss breakfast I can’t function and end up spending the rest of the day eating anything that comes near me for the rest of the day- another example of the importance of listening to our own bodies and nurturing our needs based around our needs.

      i have skipped breakfast for years due to work. since home office I have started to have my fruit and yogurt in the morning and I will never go back to skipping breakfast. i hate the feeling of starving till lunch time

    THANK YOU for acknowledging the barriers bigger people face in healthcare! I had a PE at about 210 pounds, when I saw my healthcare provider about my concerns about the potential of another blood clot, she simply said “you’re overweight” and ordered tests for glucose, cholesterol, etc which were all normal. I ended up with a DVT about seven years later at 250 pounds. Turns out, I have a genetic mutation that causes blood clots! Did my weight help the problem? No it didn’t, but it also wasn’t the cause of my issue. Going to the doctor is scary for bigger bodied people because, just like she says here, our concerns are often invalidated. Great video!

      I'd believe it if she said people ate easy to prepare frozen foods rather than fancier, more difficult to prepare and healthier foods, but I seriously doubt very many families eat out even once a day. Do you know how much faster food for a family of four costs??

    32:58 I feel that it is unfair for you to use this clip the way you did. You use it to show his focus is on the need to lose weight to be healthy, whereas you feel it would be better for him to discuss, among other things, eating a balanced diet to be healthy. The video is titled Nutrition 101. Yes, he discusses counting calories, but he states repeatedly that it is vital to eat a healthy diet full of good macros and micronutrients. You also cut him off mid sentence. The rest of the sentence was about gaining weight for those who need to. He then discusses how to adjust your weight, up or down, in a healthy manner. The portion of the video you used is out of context.

    I don't think it's accurate to say that ordering takeout every night is real and TH-camrs making their own food is somehow a mark of privilege. Yeah time is a factor but for the average person the cost of regularly having takeout (especially 2x a DAY!!!) is laughably high

      💯 % agree. I'm a TH-camr. I make my own food. I collect takeout by bike sometimes (not ordering it being brought to my doorstep) and I do it as a treat, not on a daily basis.       @@SpaceWolf96 I make my own sushi and it's much cheaper than takeout. And if you make your own you can also make it organic. Tbh, if i was single I could totally afford sushi every other day. When I was younger I never made food myself. Rent was so cheap and I had no family, no real costs, living a minimalist life... But that requires a well paying job and TH-cam isn't one for most TH-camrs and it pays very irregularly.

      Yes, isn’t it much more realistic for the average person to cook 90% of the time (even if it’s just 2 min boil ravioli) and live off leftovers 3 days a week than to spend £15+ a pop per person every time you order in? I can’t afford that shit, not with London’s rent rates!

    As a psychology student I also have to respectfully disagree with your comments about adherence. Saying that most diets fail because of low adherance is not the same as shaming people for not succeeding in changing their behavior, it is just rightfully acknowledging that behavioral changes are extremely hard. Generally people think that they are way more in control of their behavior than they actually are and that kind of thinking dismisses a whole slew of psychological mechanisms that control a large portion of our behavior. Habits, self-efficacy, values, locus of control, internal and external motivation are only a few examples of factors that govern a lot of our behavior which are very difficult to change.
    My main point is: Pointing to genetic factors as the sole reason that people are unable to lose weight is both an incomplete explanation and unnecessary, because people shouldn't blame themselves for not always being completely in control of the way they think and act in the first place.

      Well said. There are many reasons why people struggle to lose weight. Yes biology (which includes genetics) plays a huge part. But so does the psychology component (which relates to behaviour change but also navigating dealing with negative emotions). I hate the oversimplified genetics explanation which offers a very fixed mindset approach to the argument, and IMO instead of empowering people just victimises them. Instead, by talking about the challenges both biology and psychology pose but also trying to give people the best tools to navigate them, we can create an environment where people can be both empowered to change but also self compassionate enough not to treat failure with blame.

      I wonder how it's relevant that you are a psychology student? Anyhow, as adherence is something you, as an individual, have. So saying that people fail because of lack of adherence is if anything blaming them. Also speaking of biology and behaviour there's no such thing as telling those things appart, but obviously eating is a basic need we have so eating fewer calories than you need to keep your current weight goes against that. Your body doesn't get that you're choosing to call starving it down dieting.

    why is it so hard to just agree that being obese is harmful to your health? No one is talking about the chubby people that are just not fit but perfectly functional, we are talking about the obese people that already see the impact of their weight in everyday lives. The type of obese that you can only achieve through years of disordered eating.

    I’m a Certified Nurse-Midwife. In addition to caring for low-risk pregnancies, I also do well woman exams. You gave me a lot to think about and I’m going to put this information into practice. I routinely ask about activity/movement and nutrition (as in access to food, pt’s wants/wishes, satisfaction with their weight...etc). But now I’m going to add in questions about sleep, stress management strategies, and discuss healthy behaviors. Thank you!

    I think the big issue with this "review" of Doctor Mike is that Abbey doesn't seem to realize he gives advice and speaks in relation to 99% of people- the majority of us. Where as, Abbey clutches on to that 1% to refute Dr. Mike. The issue is that Dr. Mike, and doctors in general, when they give broad advice are NEVER talking in terms of 100%. Just, the broad majority. On the other hand, when Abbey talks about the 1%, she never really points out that she's describing the overwhelming minority. Also, I noticed she finds obscure studies to throw in here, but keeps them very surface level, not divulging too much information about how the study was conducted, just the overall conclusions it can point to. Interesting manipulation tactics.

    I used to enjoy your videos so much, but doing a sponsorship for insanely overpriced tea right before giving your opinion on anything nutrition/health related .. that’s a big big no from me. I’m not against sponsorships at all, I know creating content for TH-cam is a job, comes with expenses etc etc. But this one really takes away a lot of your credibility.

    for someone whose content is so dedicated to dispelling the myths around "miracle" products I find it really odd that you're advertising for these teas. Just a first glance at their website advertises benefits from "powerful super-plants" promising "immune support" and even assistance in fasting. Maybe there is "more powerful absorbability" but does that really matter? Is that going to make or break someone's health? Of course not...it's really strange to hear you shelling out for this, and kind of disappointing. Not to mention the prices. You can get tea from the grocery store for $5. $60 for a box of matcha?? Come on, Abbey.

As a health care professional, I totally agree that there should be a focus on individual biomarkers other than just body weight or BMI. There is a constant emphasis on the catch phrases of diet and exercise without any discussion with the patient about their wants/needs/goals/preferences/culture.     The paper you reference saying 1/3 of obese adults are metabolically healthy appears to be a paper urging for a more rigorous definition of metabolic health in a meta-analysis of recent studies. How does this prove a point about metabolic health in obese adults and what definition of metabolic health are you using?

      She'll never respond to this kind of criticism. Have you seen her "unbiased" weight loss surgery video? She cherry picked papers and quoted them out of context. Ex: She said that WLS increases your risk of eating disorders... when the paper/s she quoted were about PRE-OP patients or comparing WLS patients to the general population.

    I am a person categorized as obese, but am very active and have a balanced diet. I tend to ignore my weight and focus on my muscle and body fat percentages, activity levels and nutrition to indicate my propensity to health risks. My happiness and how I feel in my body are important factors as well.
    I’m an Orange Theory member and get toxic comments from trainers quite often that are “fatphobic” in nature. “You’ll start looking great in no time” “We’ll get you right” and speaking to me in a manner that presumes I don’t know much about fitness and nutrition, despite my performance in the workouts. Most, if not all, of the trainers are smaller bodied, cis and white and that largely affects what they think health looks like without considering body type and other factors.

      I think people over-think weight loss/gain. I personally think that as long as we're exercising consistently and eating a balanced diet, we're good. My focus was always weight loss weight loss, and I felt really bad about my body. Even when I lost all the weight, I was unhappy. My problem was that I thought that weight loss= healthiness, which isn't true at all.

    So if I have dinner at 8pm and breakfast at 10am I am technically “fasting” for 14 hours even though I’m sleeping for like 8 of those hours. I don’t understand why this is a diet concept, it’s just...normal. Anyways. I love your channel, Abbey- it’s balanced and informative and you’re really really great.

      That’s not “Normal” for everyone tho.. plus the most common form of IF is 16 hours of fasting and that’s definitely not normal for a lot of people, including me.

      No, because that would make your timeframe window 10 hours instead of 8.
      Your calculations are incorrect.
      From 10 to 12am and from 12 to 8pm equals 10 hours, not 8. If you really want to do IF it would have to be either from 10am until 6pm, or from 12am until 8pm.

    I really appreciate your approach on health and weight. I am overweight, deal with PCOS, and recently my lab tests showed improvement despite my weight, however, I must say that I have changed my diet and my exercise routine which I am sure have helped me a lot. It is a shame though when I get comments like 'so you are exercising and following your dietitians advice and you haven't lost much weight?' Hahaha. It is just really hard to deal with people who solely base their judgement on other people's health based on looks rather than the amount of effort that it takes. It is a bit discouraging, but watching you and other people I follow on IG give me hope that one day people may not feel compelled to give unsolicited opinions on health without knowing the bigger picture. Or just mind their own business in general...

      Agreed! I would be considered overweight based on my BMI.... but I have gone from being ruled by anxiety/stress and eating a ton of fast food and only sleeping enough to function, to working on my mental health and self image, exercising, and trying to cook at home more and increase my produce intake. Just because I am the same weight does not mean I am not “healthier.” I feel better, more clear minded and less sluggish and am working on continuing to develop habits that will support my long term health. People can be trying to take care of their health without any obvious or intentional weight loss and I think this approach is more attainable and less discouraging for many people.

    I love Dr. Mike and Abbey, so I was actually super concerned going into this video (especially with the disappointed mom face she has in the thumbnail😂). I'm so glad with how enthusiastic Abbey was about Dr. Mike's messages on his channel. Research based health science has been my saving grace when overcoming my restrictive eating/ED and the anxiety that is packaged with that.

    I love how my intuitive way of eating become "fasting" and really popular when I simply just hate breakfast and cant eat until 11/12 lmaooo. Ive always WANTED to be a breakfast person but no, my body wont let me. I will never call it anything tho. I just want to drink coffee in the morning and nothing else, unless I'm really hungry😌

    Nearly cried for your compassion when you were talking about the realities of people not being listened to by doctors. When I was at my heaviest, I had a couple of other health issues, and literally every single doctor or nurse I spoke to literally started every session with weighing me, and a number of nurses told me that if I wasn't drastically lighter next time I saw them, they would have to take me off the pill. I get that obesity leads to increased risk factors on the pill, and that it is a risk factor for other illnesses too, but when the first reaction to my walking into a doctor's room was to weigh me, sometimes before I had even finished describing symptoms, that was really hard. I would go home in tears, and desperately tried to avoid doctors and nurses as much as possible, despite the fact that my health issues at the time had nothing to do with my weight.

      Do doctors not weigh everyone in your country? I'm in the US and I get weighed before every appointment - even at the dermatologists office - even though I've always been thin.

      @@AMortalDothApproach I'm in the UK - and while they do still weigh me now that I'm lighter, it's no longer just the first step. It's only ONE risk factor, so if they don't think it's a high risk factor for you, there's no emphasis placed on it. It's just a part of your medical history that they take, along with asking if your family has a history of certain cancers etc., where before it was literally the first thing they did.

    Research and data aren’t about shifting blame. Low adherence is low adherence and skews results. Fine to point out contributing factors to that low adherence but it doesn’t make his point less factual.

I am two weeks away from finishing my undergrad in nutrition, and you are truly the role model for how I want to approach nutrition topics as a future dietitian. I struggle with whether or not I will label myself as “HAES” or be in the camp of dietitians that supports weight loss for some patients/clients. There is such a fine line that exists within these topics, and you walk it so beautifully!

    I actually agreed with everything Dr. Mike is saying. You always say that influencers are not nutritionists and they shouldn’t promote certain things and they still need to take responsibility.. basically “stay in their lanes” and here you are talking about medical content, yes you’re a nutritionist but he is a doctor so maybe he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to medicine more than you. Although you are very knowledgeable, I think he’s a professional speaking on what he knows best

      as a medical student i can tell you.... nutritionists are better educated on health topics than most doctors. especially gps are. my biggest criticism of doctor mike is actualy that i think he is giving broader advice than he should. especially about nutrition. but also other topics like dermatology, gynecology. i dont mean to be overcritical and i hope you dont take this as criticism but im not sure you know how little education doctors get on these topics... people generally seem to assume he knows what he is talking about just because he is a doctor because they dont know (naturally!) what we study... medical education is sadly less wide than most people think it is (we would be studying a hundred years otherwise.. thats why specialities exist!!!) and he gives advice above his speciality here.. do you get what i mean? i hope im understanding you right and i hope im expressing myself well... cos i feel like im not.

And doctors are just people, they have bias, they're not perfect, they don't have all the answers every time.

      Abbey is a Registered Dietician. This is a regulated title (like Medical Doctor), and in Canada it requires a four year degree, a 10-12 month internship, and a successfully passing a board exam.
      A Registered Dietician is not the same as a Nutritionist. Anyone can call themselves a Nutritionist.
      Often an RD knows more about weight and nutrition than a medical doctor because their education specifically focused on that.

      @@chiarakoch6034 I completely agree with you here, as TH-cam grows it's hard to filter the more credible info as everyone is giving an opinion. It also makes it harder when you have doctors speaking above their specialty/expertise.
      For example, there is a plastic surgeon on TH-cam who gives skincare advice, sometimes in contrast with a dermatologist, I follow on TH-cam. Although Dr.Mike is a doctor, I think for general diet advice I would listen to a dieticia

    Yep.. i can relate so hard with the way doctors treat obese patients part! I've been obese for years and whenever i go to any doctor to literally ask for help with anything... their reply is always "lose weight..." I feel helpless.. I've quit doctors for good. Most are judgmental and of no help to me!

      I will tell you how I overcame my obesity. Eat in a calorie deficit. You can calculate your daily calories by a number of online calculators. Try eating in a 500 calorie deficit per day. Start resistance training and eat high protein

      I can totally see how the tone or shaming people causes them to gain even more weight out of guilt eating etc. They have great advice but miss the psychology of obesity! Confident people with great self esteem tend to not be obese… Weight loss starts in the mind imo.

    I just want to say that I love what you said about the portioning out of food and then getting more if you want. I never thought of it that way! I always thought that I was portioning out to control how much I'm eating and it never occured to me that it should be used as a healthy way to check in with yourself. I end up feeling bad if I'm still hungry after the portion and beating myself up about always being hungry. I'm going to try and think about this a different way now and use it to check in with myself, thank you!

      The issue with the term would be that most fruits and vegetables are "superfoods." You don't need special mushroom coffee or whatever else they try to sell under that guise. :)

      @@chchchcherrybomb37 goiters is an enlarged thyroid gland if I remember correctly. It is a side effect of not having enough iodine and the reason iodized salt is a thing. I hope this is helpful!

      I also have a big issue with how pro the American healthcare system he is. His video on it clearly acknowledges that so many can't afford healthcare, but brushes it off as his hospital has a charity for those who risk bankruptcy. He just overall seemed very dismissive, and honestly from an outsiders perspective medicine seems far more in it for the money. In the UK it's more of a thankless vocation

      i actually tried noom. really enjoyed it! i didn't continue long term because of the price (i was laid off), but it was a good program with pretty gentle accountability. it was nice to be assigned a little group to connect with.

      I know a couple people who use Noom and like abbey said, i only see a problem with it if i see it become obsessive. It’s helped both of them lose a lot of weight and completely change their taste in food in favor of healthier options. Seems like a good program

I love coffee but i have heard from one neuroscientist said that coffee could hurt our nerves when we’re old, i love sparkling water is it bad to drink it everyday?       here's my two cents on alcohol: it's horrible and we should avoid it. Most people drink because of social pressure or to look cool in front of their friends (I have seen this in all age groups that are legally allowed to drink). I haven't had alcohol in over 9 years and when I decided to stop drinking I immediately felt so much better. I took that pressure off of myself, I stopped poisoning my body, I felt physically and mentally better and to be perfectly honest, I saved money and lost some weight (which wasn't intentional but I also wasn't mad about it :D). The argument that a glass of wine a day is good for your heart is total bs to me. There are other ways to take care of your heart that don't include alcohol. I'm not saying that everyone should stop drinking alcohol completely, it's just what works best for me. If you want a drink here and there, totally fine. But in my opinion having a beer (or several) every day or even drinking every weekend is too much. There's a reason it's called alcohol poisoning; it's poison so why would you want to drink it on a regular basis?

    The problem with diets is that people go on them only looking to lose weight. They cut calories or cut out certain foods. They hate it and force it. And that's why diets fail. I feel like if people make small changes and don't view it as a diet, but a life style change it will work. I've never had an success in losing weight until I stopped focusing on weight loss. I don't know if that makes any scene at all. I just started focusing on eating better, and regular exercise for my health and not for weight loss. With that mind set I lost 30lbs. When focusing on losing weight I barely loss weight.

      I agree the same thing happened to me. I also think the stress of not losing weight fast enough when being so focused on losing weight uSe to lead me to binge. So focusing on living a happy more healthy life over all and forgetting about the scale has really changed my relationship with myself, food, and movement.

    For me being Vegan is an ethical choice, health has 0 do with it. So whether or not being vegan is healthier or not it's not even part of the question. I'm most concerned with how to eat a vegan diet healthily for myself, which I think almost anyone can do unless your Doctor says otherwise.

      @@AbbeysKitchen I think it's just weird hearing people talk about it in terms of what's healthiest. I understand why, but from my perspective eating animal products is wrong ethically (unless they're foraged from the dumpster, hunting (when that's all that is available)...) I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself well. I guess it just feels insensitive to the animals being tortured and killed to talk about their bodies and 'products' in simple terms like health if that makes sense.

      Making peace with my self is important. Making peace with others is impossible and a waste of time.
      The human body was made to be able to consume anything available.
      Guilt is a construct normally shamed into a person by other people.
      I tried vegetarian. It was not at all what I expected. It was also not what others said. It was not at all satisfyingly. I added back a tiny amount of meats and other animal proteins. Now I’m very comfortable and healthier than nine out of ten people. I already have a belief system but mine has a point and my diet is complicated enough.
      Vegan is a religion. It’s not a diet.

    I’m really aware of my own patterns now and simply CANNOT skip meals because it inevitably leads to binging... sometimes for weeks.
