      That should be a LAW, that Microsoft provide an Update service for all versions of windows they created... it could be a paid service ( $49 a year ) considering the Billions of machines produced that are out their existing... MS would make BANK $ from just keeping a few servers up and running on the internet to dish out updates to old Windows 3.1 / 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / 7 / 8.1 machines...

    Just to clarify to your audience because I love your videos about these old machines... Legacy update not only update your Windows, but your Office package as well, including also the newest release for most drivers you got in the machine as well like Graphics card driver for example.... Also it detects which Windows language you are using and redirect to specific updates for that language, this is where Legacy Update shines.

    Been utilizing this lately to restore a bunch of XP-related machines. I used to use a self-hosted WSUS server myself with all the XP updates that I needed, and while I still think it’s a faster way of doing updates since it’s self-hosted, the convenience of this utility shouldn’t be understated. It’s a great effort to restore this once-lost feature and I hope it only gets better over time (i.e, Windows 9x/NT4 updates?)

    • @pessoaanonima6345
      @pessoaanonima6345 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      According to the FAQ:
      "I’d love to support as far back as Windows Update itself has existed, but it may be quite a bit more significant undertaking than Legacy Update has been so far due to Microsoft’s intent to move on from its past. I’m still positive it can be done though!"
      He also explains XP and 2000 are much easier due to the similarities to the newer versions, while these old versions would require him to do more work. I hope it works though.

    • @jwoolery99
      @jwoolery99 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pessoaanonima6345 I think it can be done, it might need a special utility to do so (just like the Legacy Update “enabler” for 2000 and later), but I could imagine it’s doable. Course I’m not a software developer so the most I can do is speak with my mouth 😆

    • @Skiedeagle
      @Skiedeagle ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@jwoolery99 I think that's what it is, looking at a preview of it on his Twitter shows a windows update v3 page displaying on a 9x system checking for updates, so it's getting somewhere

    • @pessoaanonima6345
      @pessoaanonima6345 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jwoolery99 It's not that simple. Windows 2000 and XP already have support for the latest Windows Update agent. These older versions don't, so according to him, it is harder to provide support as microsoft doesn't do it anymore. Read the FAQ, he explains it much better than I could.

    • @jwoolery99
      @jwoolery99 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@pessoaanonima6345 Correct, so even if they have to go down the custom utility route to re-enable updates, then I’m all for it! It might require a separate server with more bandwidth requirements, so that could be a problem large-scale, but truthfully I can’t imagine a ton of 9x machines are going to be slamming an update server frequently, so it could work out with some additional $. But that’s just my opinion.

      Much as I love this application and what it does, if the PC is 64-bit capable then consider a Linux solution. My preference as of present is EndeavourOS. TH-cam isn't the best platform to talk about this, but I wouldn't mind sparing some more time to do so if you want to pick a Linux user's brain about this.
      Mind, I am still quite a bit novice because I don't really dig _that deep_ into things, but I am more-than-capable of representing the breadth of choice for complete desktop environments to enough of a degree for determining what might be good for an older system depending on its specifications.

    • @mattelder1971
      @mattelder1971 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@bluephreakr LOL, it's so cute that you think that you know more about this than I do. I'm VERY familiar with Linux and have been working on computers for nearly 40 years. I restore the computers as close to their original configuration as possible because the people who typically buy these older systems want them either for nostalgia or for playing old games or just as collectibles. Any computer that originally came with Windows 7 or above gets upgraded to Windows 10.

      @@bluephreakr I'm still curious to read it though.

    • @bluephreakr
      @bluephreakr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@McVaio The TL;DR of it would basically be XFCE, MATE or LXQt for lower-end machines, KDE, GNOME Shell or Cinnamon for higher-end machines.
      Ultimately what drives much of the experience is what interface is available to an end-user. Second to that is package management. Third is whether the package management works for one's needs. If those three things are fulfilled in a satisfactory way to an end-user, they can attempt to live their best life computing with anything open-source.
      Before all of that, however the kernel must play ball with the hardware available. If it does, everything else can come thereafter.
      The absolute worse thing any end-user can do to themselves is not take time to discover. Solutions like Ventoy can make that easy by shotgunning a bunch of different distros with aa sole focus on the overall desktop experience and think critically of what they like, or at the very least what they do not mind living with. Unfortunately, time is a precious limited resource for many, and people seeking a _just works_ solution is bound to be disappointed.

    With Michaels blessing I went and tried this on my dell Lastro 1500 from 2007. My favorite computer of all time! It ended its service life with Windows Vista ultimate in 32 bit. With his utility I was finally able to get those two elusive updates from May 2017 that I was never able to pull down when Windows update broke on the system. Running Windows update drew an error but I suspect that is because there are no more updates to get.

    A note for people downloading this now, the main website link throws you to version 1.5, which is broken for some Windows versions, including Vista, which makes it so even after installing Legacy Update, it still throws an error when looking for updates, but this was already addressed on version 1.6, except that it seems the guy in charge hasn't updated the link yet, so you have to copy the link, paste it on the address bar, and change 1.5 to 1.6 and you should be good to go!

    a thing to note is that you must download it on the system that you want to use it on. despite the .exe being universal and exactly the same afaik, dragging it in from a windows 10 host to an xp vm caused it to not work, but downloading the .exe directly from xp with mypal made it work. not sure what causes that, took a bit of trial and error until it happened

      I downloaded the exe on windows 10 and transferred it to an actual XP machine with no issues, must be just a vm issue.

    What a AWESOME little thing! Finally. Hopefully they'll add other language support as well as older Windows versions (9x, ME, 2000, 2003...). I'll wait for that. :)

    Just wishing it was possible to do like the old wsus offline program and compile these updates to either slipstream or to burn to a disk to run and update the machine off the network as well. I'd love this notion even more if that was possible.

    Finallyyyyy! Ive had an SSD sitting in my drawer with a fully updated version of Vista Ultimate for my old HP Elitebook Workstation (updated before MS pulled the server Been afraid to have anything happen to it because I couldn't find the updates anymore). I was very disheartened last time I installed Windows 7 only for Windows Update to not work. Glad to see there's a fix (I saw in the video that they mention Win7 on the page, just not at the top)

      The fix is just to install two or three update packages, the difference is you don't have to manually install them.

    I always wondered if there was an unofficial site like this floating around somewhere as I understand some people with hardware that was only supported with XP wouldn't want to just ditch expensive hardware, there are also still a lot of XP machines out there, I run my own file server (just a dumping ground for all my old music albums etc which I do not want to just ditch) but because it won't support my Samsung phone being plugged in via USB its a massive p.i.t.a to get things onto it, vista works fine but I could never get the appropriate updates etc, that was until now 😂 massive thanks man
