Colin Farrell was honestly one of the best parts of this movie. I heard that he was playing the Penguin but when I saw him on screen I didn’t even think that was him because it looked nothing like him. Probably one of the best portrayals of a DC villain in live action
I heard his son broke down into tears when he saw his dad in full make up straight terrified him >_< and for good reason... But yeah great performance also
As much as I like Danny Devito's Penguin, I like his potrayal as Penguin too as the henchman of Falcone who then raise to the top to be the mob boss and he will take control of everything. Although the guy who played Penguin in Gotham Tv Show is also good too.
I just like that the Riddler was basically Jigsaw in this movie because that's pretty in line with how he is in the Arkham Games. Not only does he place a bunch of riddles around the city that you have to figure out but he kidnaps people and puts them in traps that you have to save them from. Which... also involves solving riddles/puzzles.
It worked right up until he became a whiny little shit just mad at rich people. Before that it was the first time I felt they did the character right for something trying to shake off the goofy days of "riddle me this". Jigsaw style traps? Cool. A conspiracy theorist that knows he has to lead you to the answer not blurt it out? Awesome. I'm mad Bruce Wayne gets attention and I didn't so I'm going to destroy the city with a good street cleaning? And you lost me.
I don't like the portrayal of being ranty and obviously crazy though. It's not scary. Scary is calmly and rationally explaining why horrible things are the logical, natural thing to do. Inevitable, really.
The part where the thug yells "who the hell are you supposed to be?" is actually in context with the Halloween night. The thug might've thought it's someone dressed up as the batman, and with him attacking, everyone immediately realize that's it's the real deal!
but even with an impersonator why wouldn't you be intimidated ? If I was a thug and you impersonated batman i wouldn't take my chances because you could be actually batman.
You're telling me he knows who Batman is, sees a guy dressed up like Batman and says "who the hell are you supposed to be?"? If he thought it was the real The Batman then why would he say this? If he thought it was someone dressed up like The Batman, and he knows what Batman looks like, why would he say this? Obviously he would know who he is supposed to be. It's completely forced just so Batman can say "I'm vengeance".
Fun fact: Bruce aggressively buys Gotham real estate so that he can instal cameras, gear caches, technically not be trespassing when he lurks, and YUP, install skylights to sneak and/or dramatically burst through. This is actually canon in certain comic continuities (albeit prolly not this movie’s)
He doesn't buy them he aggressively markets waynetech to buildings in the city, I think because he has the cameras programmed to not detect him and in the arkham series at least he makes sure the vents are big enough to allow him to fit through.
I don't know if I'm impressed that this comment taught me something about Batman lore I didn't know, or that there's more Batman lore than I know about. I need to read more batman comics than the metric ton I already have.
Y'know, I actually liked the fact that the movie was 8 hours long. I mean, I get that some people might get bored or lose focus or want to go to the bathroom sometime in that 9 hour period, but I thought it was good for the pacing of the story, and I had a good 10 hours to spare that weekend, so why not? If anything, I think more studios should be willing to commit to 11-hour runtimes.
I feel like the 12 hour length of the movie really allowed for this movie to feel lived in to a degree the other Batman movies haven’t. I think if done well a 13 hour movie can be done effectively
1. The car chase was extra great because of how the nearby cars reacted. Most car chases all the surrounding cars either ignore the chase or all immediately crash and explode for no reason. This just felt real. 2. When I saw this in the theater I could hear someone nearby say "roll credits" during the roll credits moment. They aren't loud or disruptive, it was beautiful
"Roll Credits" has crossed my brain during so many movies since I started watching CS/EWW... I don't think I've said it out loud in Public yet... but it's infectious...
I said it in the IMAX theatre in Spring Tx. Was it me you heard? There was a guy that fell asleep during this movie. He was snoring loudly. People were so annoyed with the movie that we all just let him sleep; no-one bothered to wake him up.

I grew up in a house with a skylight 15 feet from the floor that could be opened. You needed a hook tool to pull the latch and push it up. An extension arm would hold it open until you pulled the elbow with the hook to close it. Instead of creating a breeze like a window, it would release hot air from above.
Yeah, I’ve never lived in a house with an openable skylight, but even I understood how they operated. Time and time again, CinemaSins gives me vicarious embarrassment. Nevertheless, I still thought The Batman was a subpar film overall that had the potential to be much more than what it was.
Remember that Batman is wearing armor that can take bullets like nothing, and it took a close range shotgun shot to even make a dent in it. His armor probably protected him from most of his damage. Also he doesn’t come out of it uninjured either, you can see him limping away afterwards. It’s totally possible he broke a few bones but not every bone in his body.

I think the “el rata” and tucker reveals are brilliant, because it shows that while Batman is a great detective, he’s still young, and his upbringing can be a disadvantage when he could have solved the case if he knew basic Spanish or a tool used in a hard day’s work.
dude, this movie's batman is miles away from being a detective, and i'm not even saying a "great" one... catwoman, gordon and alfred do all the heavy lifting, wayne's money and name do the rest.
No, it makes him look like an idiot. He’s supposed to be the best detectives in the world, the best tactician and problem solver on the Justice League. This is equivalent to having Superman throw his back out trying to pick up a pile of lumber.
I agree. I specially like it because it shows Batman being completely out of touch with the city he’s trying to save. Several times during the movie people call him out as a “rich boy” who doesn’t really understand how the city he’s trying to save actually works. And it all builds up to the “I’m Vengeance” quote at the end where he finally realizes that he was going about it all wrong and starts to actually save people and not only beat up thugs. I personally think, however, that it would’ve been better if Bruce’s father did actually intend to murder that journalist because it would further drive the point home that Bruce doesn’t really know what he’s fighting for.
@@quleughy Justice League doesn't even exist in this universe, and he is a genius because he discovered things that the police didn't. The drive, the fact that Falcone was the rat, Riddler's plan.
Personally, I quite enjoyed that the movie was in no hurry and lingered on many of its shots. It's not the best for the pacing of the narrative, but it's basically time where they get to focus on the cinematography and I quite enjoyed a lot of that.
That's alright for an art movie but I don't think it works too well for any other type of movie, and I don't actually have a problem with shots that hang for a while, I just feel like these shots went for a bit too long with little pay off.
2:38 Jeremy, you cut out the other clips where it shows multiple criminals see the light, and get scared of the dark and run away. Showing that Batman's rep as a boogey man is working.

Sin 5: Actually, yes; that's exactly how they do it. It's a long pole with a hook (or whatever tool is needed based on the skylight) on the end. Some of them even have a pully mechanism like window blinds, where one direction opens it and the other closes. It's like being flabbergasted by the idea of how anyone reaches any sort of high place; we have many tools and mechanisms for such tasks.
I mean, to be fair, how many people these days have even seen a skylight, much less seen anyone ever interact with it? I'd never have guessed that they'd literally make 30 foot long poles just to open a window, it sounds like one of the silliest things ever.
7:48 I got this one... so you can definitely repel on a rope and then tug it loose. It's called a pass through. The thing they got wrong is that it would have both rope tails coming down from the skylight. One to repel on, and the other to pull the line down. Definitely much easier to show than to explain, but yes it is possible, but not likely in this scenario
@@bradleyadams5987 that's an interesting thought. I haven't heard or used this knot before. Looks cool. I'll have to put it into practice sometime. The pass through I'm talking about is basically a munters or choke with one tail out of the choke.
@@FitzyyLives aka suicide knot as if you take the weight off it, ever, it comes apart. One bad hard stop during descent, where you bounce up on the rope, the rest of the decent will be high speed. This is why almost no one uses this knot, there is no margin for error.

Actually skylights that opened were a great way to get the rising heat out of a room in the days before air conditioning. Given the noir "we're going to play around with different eras" feeling, this actually makes perfect sense.
I liked how this film had that dark gritty feel, similar to the video games. Reminds us that Batman is not a superhero, he’s a dark vigilante who does things to inspire fear.
Another great video. It made me realize why the simple skintight cloth old school costumes were more inconspicuous; you could easily keep them under your clothes, even the masks which just had to be under collar. What do they do with that modern bulky, unflexable body armor? Wouldn't it be way bulkier looking if kept under the civies? And if not, how do you just switch into it, or even lug it around Inconspicuously?
I’m pretty late but Batman is a human with no powers and needs protection from bullets, he can’t go around in a skin tight suit with no armor. There are still super heroes like Superman and Spider-Man with skin tight suits because they have super powers and bullets are less of a threat. Also I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure in the movie Bruce can be seen carrying the suit in a bag.
@@dereksmaszcz yes he can, it's a fictional story you can still make a skin tight suit that's also bulletproof, his Arkham suit is awesome and it's the best example
@@RatzCarnatz While yes the movie is fiction, they went for a realistic approach for this movie. A skin tight bulletproof suit isn’t realistic at all. The Arkham Asylum and City suits would not actually work. The Arkham Knight suit is very similar to the suit used in this movie and it is the most realistic out of them with it being armored.
For Sin 93, I have to argue that the Riddler didn't go after Bruce directly for the same reason that he didn't go after Falcone himself despite pretty much knowing who he was (With the theatrics surrounding Colson being part of his MO of not just giving people the answers). Both of them are pointed out as social recluses with one staying in the private section of a heavily protected criminal den and the other living in what has to be a similarly very secure home. Add to it, Riddler has no chance to scope them out and find out their daily schedules and habits, so for Falcone he relies on Batman and the Police to bring him into the perfect place for him to be taken out...it seems like Bruce was just a bonus target for him. He talks about Bruce's father, he resents Bruce for being an orphan with billions of dollars and a home of his own and he lumps Bruce in with everything he hates about Gotham; but in the end I think that Bruce was less of a necessary target and more of a personal one for him. That was why he relied on something so impersonal and imperfect, because he didn't really mind if it failed as long as the message accompanying it got to Batman.
Thank you so much for pointing that out. I disagreed with that sin for the same reasons. The Riddler did not have any opportunities to get Bruce the same way he got those other guys, especially with Bruce going out as Batman every night to who knows where.
I think he mentions that he thinks that him and the Batman are partners or "associates", that he is a fan of Batman. But then the Riddler also implies that he knows that Bruce Wayne is the Batman. So if the Riddler is a fan of Batman and knows his real identity, then why did he want to kill Bruce Wayne? Also, I dunno if I am alone here, but I found it very funny that after Batman introduces himself as Vengence and criminals tremble at the sight of the Bat signal, the thug asks him who he is. Well, he was probably visiting from the town where the Arrow operates...
@@user-qj9en1kp1m The rest of that group seemed to realize who he was after his ‘I’m Vengeance’ line. If I had to guess, two years was enough for people in Gotham to have come to accept that the Batman is a real and terrifying presence, but that’s still a city with millions of people. Now maybe that one guy was fairly new to town, some forms of criminal are prone to being transitory. Or maybe he was that one guy who stubbornly believed the Batman to be a myth to scare people like him, and for a second thought that the man who would beat him into a pulp was just some regular guy dressing up to play on said myth.
if he could scope out the mayor nd police chief he could definitely scope out batman, he really wanted falcone but couldnt to him so he used batman to forcefully bring him out. Another thing i'm struggling to understand is this, riddler really considers batman as some sort of ally which is why it was probably fun for him to send batman the clues, when he found out about falcone he must be wondering holy shit i bet the batman doesnt know this shit so let me put him on, which makes me wonder why he isnt interested in knowing his true identity. Is it maybe because he doesn't wanna ruin the mysteriousness of the batman he had grown to admire, so out of respect he let him be? Personally i think they should have let that part he said bruce wayne in the prison play out like he knew his real identity. However, he was going to keep his true identity to himself out of deep deep respect for the lore, for gotham cause he truly believes gotham needs the batman.
I laughed my ass off when the car crashed into the funeral and you can see the look in Bruce's eyes as he's realizing "Oh shit, I need my Batsuit for this."
They did a job at him being a first responder and him being a detective. I would have liked to see Pattinson do more as Interrogating and intimidating of criminals
He was a great first responder when he caused that explosive car crash on the highway where dozens of people died and he didn't even try to save any of them.
This movie is a purrfect example of a "slow burn" without it feeling slow while still delivering on some classic Batman. its so excellently paced my third theater viewing was as gripping as the first (and still at home)

I still love the fact that riddler could have killed falcone at the funeral Like in the end he says "there is no way i could have brought him out of his iceberg bar"
It wouldn't have mattered though because Falcones crimes had yet to be discovered by Gotham. Killing him before the fact wouldn't have been satisfactory for The Riddler.
If he killed Falcone outright at the funeral it probably would’ve driven the people in on the Renewal Fund scheme further into the shadows because they’d now know nobody who was in on it was untouchable. If anything killing Mitchell, Savage and Coulson first was the best choice because it drove Falcone further into hiding and kept him in one place where Riddler could easily shoot him
Riddler had no way of knowing Falcone would even be there. Also, Riddler's whole shtick is building up suspense with riddles before finally completing his plan. Even if Riddler had snuck in a gun and was able to accurately get Falcone ... he still wouldn't have taken the shot.

I agree that having Thomas Wayne being corrupt would be more interesting. Batman started out to avenge his parents only to realise his parents weren't as squeaky clean and idealistic as he thought, he starts questioning his crusade but ultimately decides to be Batman for the hope of the city, not for his personal vendetta. It would have worked perfectly into the story.
Yeah but that requires you use the middle of the rope not just one end and pop the knot off when you're done. Movie rappeling is usually a large pile of shit.
Batman didn’t do any detecting in this movie. He was handed clues by the police from the person he was chasing. The one lead he came up with (the Penguin being El Rata Alata) was wrong, and that caused quite a few innocents to be killed in that car chase. In the end, he’s handed the answer to the final clue that the climax of the movie hinges on on a silver platter of plot convenience. The Batman in The Batman is a passive character. He’s moved along by the plot, not by his own proactive choices. I hate this movie
@@eyespy3001 So, the police showed the pry tools in the cage, Gordon gave batman the "bring him the light" card? Personally, this is one of my favorite Batman movies. I know the movie was really long but I didn’t get bored. The movie did a good job at keeping me interested. Most of the movie was set at night or in a dark room, and I have heard some people complain about that, but I think it is great because that’s Batman’s whole thing. He is the creature of the night. Overall I think it is a amazing movie.
You should have give a sin for the fact that Penguin got into a literal car crash, and somehow got out of it without even a scratch on him. Like, he should be fighting to stay alive after an incident as major as that. Also, Riddler’s comically large neck chain, that he could 100% escape from with ease.
I think the biggest sin of the movie that Jeremy forgot was that Batman and Gordon just let the Penguin go after that shootout and car chase that probably killed many people. He just gets tied up and left alone. The two spend the whole movie trying to uncover corruption, they should just look in the mirror.

Yes, but the bad guys in the Iceberg Lounge actually did have flashlights, which is how they discovered Batman on the ceiling (before getting beaten to a pulp).
How could you not remove a sin for that insanely badass upside down scene after the car chase? Batman literally looks like he's immerging from hell. Its even in the thumbnail!!
I really enjoyed the movie, but the main problem with it as scene-by-scene, Batman's intelligence swung pretty wildly depend on what the script demanded.
14:45 something that bothered me while watching this film, there's this huge car incident caused by Penguin trying to scape, but it only ended in an upsidedown Batman walk to penguin's car for dramatic purposes, but what about all the cars and trucks that crashed and exploded? Did nobody died? Did it not make the news at all? How come Batman and Gordon just leave Penguin tied up to a column without bringing him in over the huge car incident he caused?
Because that scene was only there for the movie to illogically indulge itself. Just like many scenes in the movie. Rather than having a script that was well written.
In addition to the dramatic purposes of the car chase scene, Batman and Gordon leaving pingüin behind was for comedic relief also they had bigger fish to fry than Pinguin with Riddler on the loose etc.
Jeffery Wright was an excellent Jim Gordon. That is a huge compliment coming from a fan who is obsessed with the show Gotham. But Paul Dano as Riddler. The guy looks like he lives in his parents basement. Should have been a variant of Cory Michael Smith.
Assuming cat woman knows her knots she maybe could have used a “sheep knot”, the sheep knot hold tight as long as there is tension and it should undo itself in a couple shakes when the line is loose.
I was at cinema, the screen went black for few minutes, you could hear dialogs, just black screen, peoople didn't knew if it's on purpose or if it was defect, some guy went to ask, it was defect, luckily, they were able to repair it few minutes later
In the comics Riddler figured out Batman's identify. Bruce/Batman tricked riddler to keep his secret. Because of Riddlers incessant need to feel special and supperior to everyone.
Even though removing all the skylights from every building in Gotham may result in drastically plunging the city's crime rates into darkness, Batman probably didn't want to tug on that rappel rope.
I really liked this movie. I really hope they make a sequel. I want the main villain of the sequel to be Hush (Thomas Elliot), because I think that this type of a Batman could do Hush some justice. It would also be nice to see a villain in a Batman movie that we haven't seen in the movies before. I am getting tired of them recycling villains. Batman has such a huge rogues gallery, why not use someone different instead of recycling the same five villains everytime you make a new trilogy?
I've argued the merit of having Hush be the next villain, and obviously cut out the Riddler's role in that story arc, a thousand times already on discords and TH-cam. But everyone keeps saying they want Freeze
@@misteronetwo3356 I like Hush, but he feels better for a more established and experienced Batman. Since Pattinson's version is a beginner, I don't see Hush as a good villain for the next film.
I'm surprised nobody found it a bit odd that during the scene where the Riddler revealed the "truth" about Thomas Wayne having Carmine Falcone kill the reporter who was going to doing an expose on Martha Wayne and her family they revealed that the reporter's last name was Elliott and then it flashed the word HUSH during Riddler's documentary right after he mentioned hush money for that reporter. I found it to be a bit too much of a coincidence. Elliott/Hush.

1:33 lamps are one of those things that you don’t need to pay royalties to make a room look “lived in,” and furnished…..notice how so VERY MANY films refuse to include background posters toys, statues etc. Of nongeneric stuff
The car chase in this movie is epic, especially in the theater. The sound of the Batmobile rattles your rib cage which just makes the sequence feel more intense.
Everything about that scene was epic from start to finish. From seeing the batmobile starting up in the darkness to the Penguin’s “I Got You!” moment. It was amazing.
It was only shot very fancy with close-ups and good sound design, but it really was just Batman struggling to chase a sedan that was stuck in heavy traffic lol
This movie was great but when me and my Dad went to see it, we sat in the front row for some reason. And whenever the movie had a blurry scene. We kept looking around the screen to see if anything else was in focus or if it was just blurry.
This was such an amazing movie I was invested from the get-go. But I love how he increased the duration of the movie from 3 1/2 hours to 4 then to 5 so casually 😂

Le Riddler didn/t know BW was Batman - Dhere were at least two instances in dhe “misleading thumbnail” trailers where dhe audio was mashed up incorrectly
Great video, but the twelfth sin was for something that didn’t DESERVE a sin. Batman was building up the street thug’s fear, not the suspense. We see that he starts out really caring more about avenging his parents than saving the city, even if he doesn’t say it. So naturally, he builds up the their fear.
Using the word "suspense" is valid here. And the point of the sin is that a better Batman would still be more concerned with protecting the victim than with fear or vengeance. Yes, that's the point of the movie, but it's still a sin.
@@obinnaonyeije It's not a sin if it's the point of the movie. He's still new to being Batman. He's blinded by vengeance hence why he himself and other characters refer to him as Vengeance more than they do Batman throughout the film. It's because that's all he cares about. The film shows his evolution as a character, especially after seeing how he influenced the Riddler, to become the Batman as we know him in the comics. It's a transition film. You're probably the kind of person who thinks Superman killing Zodd is a sin too. Both films have the same purpose.
The way the Riddler turned himself and was so innocuous and made so little sense to me when I first watched the movie I literally thought for the next 45 minutes they didn’t catch the right guy he’s a fake and it was hard for me to believe that they actually caught the right guy
But yeah great performance also
I *still* don't think that's Colin Farrell
Better than Ledger's Joker? I think not.

They also got his costume idea from the zodiac killer
What I don’t like is how he acts long winded or weird, and the costume looks very dominatrix like
I don't like the portrayal of being ranty and obviously crazy though. It's not scary. Scary is calmly and rationally explaining why horrible things are the logical, natural thing to do. Inevitable, really.
Yeah but Arkham games riddler still wears a fun outfit

Several times during the movie people call him out as a “rich boy” who doesn’t really understand how the city he’s trying to save actually works. I think that’s why Bruce wears extra thick clothes and totes the backpack around in this movie. He hides the pieces of his armor in/under all that.
Is it maybe because he doesn't wanna ruin the mysteriousness of the batman he had grown to admire, so out of respect he let him be?

I still love the fact that riddler could have killed falcone at the funeral
Like in the end he says "there is no way i could have brought him out of his iceberg bar"
It wouldn't have mattered though because Falcones crimes had yet to be discovered by Gotham. Killing him before the fact wouldn't have been satisfactory for The Riddler.
The point is revealing the truth. Killing Falcone is just the cherry on top.
@@jeremyclements9184 so you say riddle crashed that police car with a bomb in it in the funeral, to then make it explode, but had no way of killing falcone there?

The mayor could have a crank or chain off to the side, against the wall to open and close it. It could ALSO be opened with a long pole. But this action is usually performed by house help, hence why the mayor never expected an invader.
It can also be opened by two Olympic gymnasts, however you need Olympic curlers in order to close it.

The car chase I agree but this batman didn't care about anyone else but himself and getting the penguin.

@@KrunkCobain What do you mean unbeliavable and commercial?
Obviously you chose to ignore all of these sins because you told yourself it"good"
You should have give a sin for the fact that Penguin got into a literal car crash, and somehow got out of it without even a scratch on him.
Yea this isn’t the fault of Bats or Gordon.. penguin was recklessly driving to get away.. and if he didn’t stop him in his tracks he would’ve caused more damage. Rewatch the chase, Oswald is driving the opposite direction and causing crashes, batman is maneuvering around all his carnage
@@paulglover2778 if only he stopped him from leaving in the first place, if he didnt rev his engine for no reason at just blocked their exit, if he just walked to them like how he did at the final act against fully automatic machine guns since he's got bullet proof armor, you know we can go on...

you see the logic in that?
doesnt matter if it is a superhero film or any flick whether it is mainstream hollywood or indie, tv series short or full feature,

And as far as letting penguin go, it was sacrificing the little fish for a bigger one. Like he said in the movie “ I’m just the proprietor” he isn’t totally wrong. He’s a henchman that wants more power than he has or needs, and Batman can easily find him again when he wants. The main thing on both of their plates is “how can we catch a super intelligent serial killer/terrorist before he can really screw things up”

Did he died??
I was wondering the same things. Batman and the Penguin should both 100% be in prison for that lmao

I think a more horror noir vibe with the Scarecrow could be a good sequel. If not, then maybe something with the Mad Hatter.
Make it rated R,give me a new director and writer. And I'm on board with sequels
