    Looks great! I'm in the middle of a bar build and am in need of a top just like this!

    Just wondering why after the stain was applied. Why did you cut out the sink and then have to restain the area that was cutout. Would it have been easier to make all the cuts before staining the piece?

      Absolutely, it would’ve been a lot easier! But the video wouldn’t have been near as cool ;-)

    This looks great, thanks for the video. I plan on installing butcher block countertops in my garage kitchen. How soon after application of mineral spirits do you apply the stain? Is there any concern around the sink with moisture/should extra coats of poly be applied? Also, would you mind posting the brand and type of poly and stain used?

      So sorry it took me so long to respond, Josh. The poly should protect the wood, so I’ve never had issues. Getting a good seal is important, but don’t worry too much about it.
      I stain almost immediately after the mineral spirits is applied…you want the spirits to be drying AS you apply the gel stain.
      I used Minwax gel stain & minwax water based wipe on poly. Both have given me great results.
      Good luck!!

      @@bgwconstruction Thanks for the response. I ended up not staining it and used the minwax water based poly in satin. I put 5 coats and sanded lightly with a 320 sponge between each coat and it came out smooth as glass.

      How long did you wait between each coat?@@joshgravois818

      @joshgravois818 how long did you wait between the coats and how did you apply it?

    How many coats of gel stain did you apply and how long do you allow it to dry before applying the poly. Then, how long between each coat of poly do you allow to dry? Do you sand the final voat of poly? Thanks.

    On the butcher block countertop, what gel stain did you use and what poly did you use? Do you do multiple coats of the stain? Thank you!

    I am installing bb counter tops with a poly finish. I’ve sanded the tops with 220 grit 3 times and it still feels “hairy “ in places. Does it have to be completely slick before I apply the poly?

    Did you use oil or water based poly? Thanks for the helpful info

    • @bgwconstruction

      I used water-based poly on this application. The technology is really changed a lot over the years and water base is just fine especially if you’re using your countertops as a food prep.

    I'm putting on new bb counters in the coming weeks but and torn between poly and oil/conditioner. I like protection of poly but don't want to lose that wood feel. Is there a big difference in feel?

    Water base poly vs Waterlox to seal and finish it? Do you have any experience with waterlox or opinions on using it in place of the poly?

    How long do you usually wait between polyurethane coats. I know you said you like six or seven thin coats of the wipe on. How long do you go between each one of those. Thanks

    When glueing the sink to the counter top, did you also use fasteners? Thanks for sharing this video!

      I did use fasteners...I missed recording that important step. NICE CATCH!

    So you use a water based polyurethane. Does this cause any long term problems?
    Does it not need to be a good grade sealant?

    Question... do you use anything other than the silicone to mount that sink? I know it's fairly strong, but I would have thought using some form of mechanical lock (washers and screws, etc...) would be a good follow-up option. No? Thanks!

      I did put clips, but I didn’t video that part. I should’ve said something in the video. Nice catch!

    Do butcher block countertops last without staining them? Because I love the natural color of mine but I’ve been told they won’t last as long if I don’t stain them

    • @chrisunruh6485

      I don’t know if anyone answered you but the stain does not protect it. Stain just changes the color. The sealer you use can change the color depending on what you use. I’m looking into using tongue oil so I can use my counter top as a cutting board and not worry about the polyurethane getting cut marks.

    if i stained and poly’d my countertops already is there a way i can redo and use your method i stead ? and is there such thing at too many coats of poly ?

    • @bgwconstruction
      @bgwconstruction  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can restrain the tops, but you’ll want to completely remove the clear coat and sand down the stain to virgin wood if possible. A lot of work, for sure.
      No…there’s no such thing as too much poly. ;-)

    Is using poly food safe?

    • @abm2958
      @abm2958 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once it's dried it is.

    • @SupaVillian420
      @SupaVillian420 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to check if its food grade. Some aren't but the product should say if it is.

    • @bgwconstruction
      @bgwconstruction  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s why I use water-based poly. I have read some opinions that oil base poly is bad if you get food on top of it… but I think a lot of the toxic chemicals that used to be in polyurethane and stain have been legislated out. I will confess, I’m not an chemical expert, so I always tell my clients that if we polyurethane the butcher block to not consider it completely safe as a food prep.

    You just buy the same she glued factory panels? Those are definitely not slabs they are edge glued panels not even true end grain or even edge grain butcher block slabs come on now seriously?
