    Great solution! I had a vinyl fence installed professionally with an 8 foot double gate with two drop rods. The installers used PVC pipe below the ground level so after opening my gate two or three times PVC d holders are filled with dirt!! .. . Looks like I’ll have a project to do ….. thanks for the solution.!

    How many coats of gel stain did you apply and how long do you allow it to dry before applying the poly. Then, how long between each coat of poly do you allow to dry? Do you sand the final voat of poly? Thanks.

    Do butcher block countertops last without staining them? Because I love the natural color of mine but I’ve been told they won’t last as long if I don’t stain them

    • @chrisunruh6485

      I don’t know if anyone answered you but the stain does not protect it. Stain just changes the color. The sealer you use can change the color depending on what you use. I’m looking into using tongue oil so I can use my counter top as a cutting board and not worry about the polyurethane getting cut marks.

      You have to check if its food grade. Some aren't but the product should say if it is.

    • @bgwconstruction
      @bgwconstruction ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s why I use water-based poly. I have read some opinions that oil base poly is bad if you get food on top of it… but I think a lot of the toxic chemicals that used to be in polyurethane and stain have been legislated out. I will confess, I’m not an chemical expert, so I always tell my clients that if we polyurethane the butcher block to not consider it completely safe as a food prep.

    This looks great, thanks for the video. I plan on installing butcher block countertops in my garage kitchen. How soon after application of mineral spirits do you apply the stain? Is there any concern around the sink with moisture/should extra coats of poly be applied? Also, would you mind posting the brand and type of poly and stain used?

    • @bgwconstruction
      @bgwconstruction ปีที่แล้ว

      So sorry it took me so long to respond, Josh. The poly should protect the wood, so I’ve never had issues. Getting a good seal is important, but don’t worry too much about it. I stain almost immediately after the mineral spirits is applied…you want the spirits to be drying AS you apply the gel stain. I used Minwax gel stain & minwax water based wipe on poly. Both have given me great results. Good luck!!

    • @joshgravois818
      @joshgravois818 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bgwconstruction Thanks for the response. I ended up not staining it and used the minwax water based poly in satin. I put 5 coats and sanded lightly with a 320 sponge between each coat and it came out smooth as glass.

    I just got a $75k quote (from what I thought was a reputable contractor) for a 400 sq. ft. shed (flat) roof over an existing patio! All I could do was laugh at that price 😂 Metal roof but otherwise wood. Electrical not included. Nothing itemized. By the way, I asked for a gabled roof and described the electrical elements I wanted during the consultation before receiving the quote.

    • @bgwconstruction
      @bgwconstruction 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      BobbyGigs... Not all contractors do it the way we do here at BGW. I'm not saying that their price was too high, but with no design and no scope of work, how are you supposed to understand where your money is going? Maybe you would eliminate something on the scope of work (or take it on yourself) to get the build going yet save money with sweat equity...either way, it's a lot easier to swallow a high quote if you are educated. Good luck with your project, my friend. Bobby Williams Owner, BGW Construction

    Now there is a guy and a company that gets it. Its about people, process, product. The flaw with some contractors is that the don't have a design and scope of work based on the design. Then to line item all details out with costs per line item. It puts the customer in a position to make individual choices after they see the costs of certain materials and certain ways to have it built versus other options. This puts the customer in control, with full details and the company is there to guide them through design build and finished product. Excellent job, You guys get it!!! I would do business with you.

To be fair, there are a lot of bad builders out there who are actually willing to take a job without going through the design process and that only sets the customer up for failure and disappointment.

The picture at the end shows three of my four children standing next to the table, playing chess on the board that their great-great-grandfather built, in the garage formerly occupied by their great-grandfather, that was built by their grandfather, on a table built by their father using tools used by all. It is an emotional picture for me...a picture of what is most important in this life: Family.
