I've been binging The Queen's Gambit and was inspired to create a video on the chess clock: the omnipresent companion in chess games that literally counts down the amount of time each player has before they're forced to forfeit the game.
But clocks weren't always part of the game. They're a fairly recent addition to the scene-- find out why chess clocks are a necessity to the competitive chess' longevity in this video!

I was playing chess with a relative and I suggested we use a chess clock. He didn't want to because he said it distracted him So, we started playing and he started complaining about how long I took to move. This is why I want to use a clock!

I've read that one of the reasons for the introduction of the chess clock was an incident that involved two chess players. At one point in a match one player had been waiting for the other to make a move. After several hours without a move, the player asked his opponent when he was going to make a move. Startled, his opponent said "I thought it was your move."
