    When I was starting early on I thought I needed to move my head always appropriately and always in response to the right attack from my sparring partners. Lots of calls from my coach to move my head when I wasn’t, because I was waiting for the right attack, and then I wasn’t responding fast enough when it came. Once I started to simply move my head even when opponents weren’t throwing the right shots, the head movement immediately started working, and I began making them miss by accident. I was probably using it too much, but this was also the first step to building the right habits under pressure to actually make head movement work for me because while simply moving my head in sparring and making people miss by accident I would get the feel for what I needed to be doing by accident as well. From there I have slowly made my head movement more purposeful. Just my experience, but when you mention at the end that you should not only use head movement, the opposite may temporarily be a good strategy for others to get a feel for proper head movement. Spam it like you’re mashing a head movement button in a fighting game early on, and make it more purposeful as you go, so that when you get better you can make it work and have the movements down. Would be curious what you think about this idea for total beginners if you read this. Seems to have helped me at the least.

      It's like Newton on motion: "an object in motion will stay in motion" with the obverse "an object at rest will stay at rest (unless acted upon by an external force)",
      i.e. using inertia(objects natural tendency to stay motionless or in motion) in your favour rather than against you.

      @@redsnflr Brilliant! And we certainly don't want the external force that moves us to be an attack from our opponent. Hopefully by creating the motion ourselves we can have more positive control.

    Realistic Head Movement in MMA and Kickboxing
    1. Pivot your feet whenever you slip jabs and crosses. Left foot pivots for jab, and right foot pivots for cross.
    2. Leaning back for a brief moment can help stay away from jabs and crosses.
    3. Bobbing (lowering your level)
    4. Practice pivoting both feet back and forth to improve slipping
    5. Roll underneath the punch left to right
    6. When slipping in Kickboxing and MMA, keep your hands up when lowering your level and throw combinations right after slipping
    7. All of these can be done on the heavy bag as well.

    Man it was pretty crazy how in Yair vs Holloway, Yair Rodriguez was rolling super low a lot while looking for setups for the up elbow and overhead back elbow but he never ate any huge shots to the head while he was rolling like that. I guarantee I would get knocked the hell out if I tried that in sparring haha. Maybe he just has really good timing and awareness

      El Pantera's defense enabled him to not end up like Kattar who was stationary and shelled up. By being mobile and slick Max couldn't track him with punches as effectively. Max usually likes the spinning kick against an opponent who angles out, but maybe since Rodriguez is good with kicks and can counter a weaker kicker Max thought better of it.
      It wasn't without drawbacks though, Max found the solution to a crouching opponent similar to how Sandhagen and Aljo won rounds against Petr Yan: tag him with a knee or uppercut when he dips or just grab the neck and go for a sub or the clinch. That said, No Mercy still blenderized both his opponents so your game needs a couple more layers than just that to beat him.
      tl;dr: knee, uppercut, or clinch up with a guy who dips his head real low.

      @@Lorendrawn i definitely go with the knee and/or uppercut myself when the opponent likes to dip low. the reflex ball helps tremendously with getting down the timing of those who like to dip and roll at all kinds of angles.

      My guess is it's because he didn't do it all the time. It came out of nowhere, so Max couldn't predict it, or time it. This is why it is important to have layers in your defense rather than depending on a single method.

    This is the best tutorial I've ever seen. I'm that person at 7:24 and never knew. I never generated enough power when I slip and counter -- end up mainly slipping and jabbing away to make distance.

    I loved the comparison of Canelo Alvarez type of head movement and its applications towards kickboxing. I've thought the same thing when watching Vasily Lomanchenko as well. I think a lot of people are discouraged from head movement in kickboxing because they associate head movement with something like Pernell Whitaker who was an amazingly skilled defensive fighter (one of if not the best) but whose head movement and really low positions are not the most conducive for kickboxing.

    This is an *awesome* tutorial on the finer points of slipping, rolling, etc., as well as strategizing when to use it in KB!
    I get that rolling puts you at risk of knees and kicks, which you try to mitigate by keeping your head up. I should point out (probably what most already know), even in boxing, you technically keep your head up. But the high performers and inexperienced boxers look down -- for different reasons, of course!

    Good breakdown. However, boxers are not looking at the ground when they roll under a punch. They will roll under a punch super low at times. So I get the point being made.
