Street Running Freight Train In Augusta Georgia! Norfolk Southern Downtown Train Street Running!

  • Huge Norfolk Southern freight train goes ONE MILE down the middle of 6th Street in Augusta Georgia! Street running on a main line railroad in a big city! Not a tram, but a Class One main line railway in the middle of the street pavement! It doesn't get much better than this! The intro and outro shows a BNSF private car train and the NS Officer Car Special parked in Augusta for the Masters Special golf tournament. Lucky me to be here for the once a year event. Not! I came to Augusta only to catch a streetrunner and Ramada Inn jacked their price up from the normal $119 a night to $450 a night! Still, I was going to take the room if it had a view of the railroad. The clerk would not let me see the room and would not tell me what side of the building it was on. He was too busy flirting with a female employee to be bothered. Of all the dozens of hotels that I have stayed in over the years this was the worst that I have ever been treated. So I stayed in a very old run down motel for $189 and missed out on being able to film a train from my motel room. Bummer. We caught 2 streetrunners in 6 hours and then headed to Florida. Check out the prehistoric toilet near the end of this video. I have never seen one like this. Thanks for watching! Please comment, rate and subscribe to Jawtooth!!

    When we lived in Augusta and were parked on the side of the street, we couldn't believe our eyes and ears! Love those trains...I grew up in a major train hub in GA.

    I hated that 6th Street crossing when I lived in Augusta from 88-03. Got caught by the train many times while on my lunch when I worked at 13th and Reynolds. One time I got stuck on the wrong side of the tracks for about 45 minutes when a train over a mile long had problems just as it started over the trestle over the river. Couldn't get around it. Wouldn't have been so bad but had just about the whole showroom and warehouse crew's lunch in the car. They called me about every 5 minutes until I got back because they were all starved.

    I think it's cool as hell to see those trains rolling down the middle of the street.Do you remember the rail line that ran down the middle of the street in I believe Newport Ky.?
    If memory serves me correctly the "Purple People"bridge put trains right down the middle of the street after they crossed the Ohio river coming from Cincinnati.
    Brian,thanks again for your efforts.I really enjoyed this video.

    When I was stationed at Fort Gordon (September, 1967 to December, 1968), I don't remember seeing the trains on 6th when we went to town. Street running was something I was used to in parts of Southern California, so no big deal.

      Street running was pretty common back in the 60s. Over the years there is less and less of it and the existing lines are getting less busy. My favorite street running is in San Diego. Thanks for watching!

      I remember going with my father one day in the late 50's or early 60's on a Saturday to San Bernardino. His crew worked the San Berdo job on the weekend, then days on another one and one on another job. Street running through the Ontario area. This was on the old Pacific Electric line, so carry over from the interurban cars. He and my grandfather both worked for the PE, then when PE got out of passenger service, my father went to freight.

    I just noticed that they treat the streets crossing at intersections like a grade crossing with the horn. Also, the light did stay green until he got all the way through the intersection. Really nice catch! Still a weird toilet though. Cheers, Dan

      The town was here first,1700's so it was here a good hundred and fifty years before the trains. The trains had tracks all over town and it is a daily inconvenience to everyone in town . There have been bridges built to go over a lot of tracks but there are still many places where the trains run in the street or next to it. Every politician since the 40's ran on getting rid of the tracks.

    • @SnowleopardPearl
      @SnowleopardPearl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      95% of the time... The railway, they town built around them , the town wont foot the bill to move the tracks as its a multimillion dollar task and the railways don't have to as it's their land and easement

    I haven't been to Augusta since 2008, but I guess I didn't ride through downtown long enough to see this. I would have really enjoyed seeing a Norfolk Southern train coming straight down the street! By the way did trains really use to cross the Purple People Bridge connecting Cincinnati and Newport?

    • @JawTooth
      @JawTooth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, trains crossed that bridge until somewhere around the early 1980s. I can barely remember seeing the tracks on that bridge. I have seen photos of trains coming off of it into Northern Kentucky in a couple magazines. I also made another video of Augusta of a train stopping in the road and blocking traffic. Thanks for visiting my channel!

      Shawn Stephens this is the NS R-Line from Augusta, Ga to Charlotte, NC via Devine Junction in Columbia, Sc. This line has been tremendously downgraded due to the PTC system not being completed on this segment of the R-Line. Augusta only gets trains NS 191/192 and a local. it used to get trains 191/192, 155/156, 66/67E Ethanol Trains. 155/156 still runs to Augusta via the line from Savannah but it's traffic to the Carolinas is put on 192 and brought back on 191. 66/67E now comes in via the line from Macon, Ga. these are the only trains on the R Line that touches Augusta as the northern segment from Devine Junction sees a few more trains with a local running South to Monetta, SC and grain trains going to Monetta, Sc.

    • @BunnyBBeats
      @BunnyBBeats 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can confirm what Shawn said. I live in Leesville and the R line only has 191/192 and P75 out and back to Monetta.
