CSX Locomotive Derails in Augusta, GA

    I made my way to CSX’s Augusta Yard when I heard ballast train W084 was there. As I arrived, I saw lots of power at the west end, and a train emerging from the Belt Line. Surprisingly, it was the train I came for; CSX W084. It was actually combined with L837, a local rock train that runs to Camak, GA. They were pulling off of the Belt Line to switch tracks at the yard. After doing so, they had to pull up again to switch more tracks. I decided I wanted to get a better shot of it so I had to drive over Gordon Highway to leave the yard since the crossing was blocked. While on top of Gordon Highway, I heard someone on my scanner say CSX L837-26 had an engine off the track. I raced down to Laney Walker Boulevard to find the lead unit, CSX 7015, was derailed on a switch so I snapped a few photos and got some footage. Unfortunately, I had other things to do so I left. After I left they uncoupled the rest of the train from CSX 7015 and pushed the train back into the yard. I’m not sure what they used to rerail CSX 7015, but this was an interesting catch to say the least.

    CSX 7015 - GE CM44AC - 3rd Gen K5HL
    CSX 7242 - GE CM44AC
    CSX 423 - GE AC44CW
    CSX 406 - GE AC44CW

    Nice catch there...at least it wasn't a bad derail.

    I'm glad none of my cars were damaged. They are like my kids. Even though they take up a lot of room in my back yard (3.4 acres), I hate to see them out on the rails. (lol). You can read about this company on their website (no relation). Bet NS is glad it wasn't their derailment!

    At least only the lead AC44C6M derailed, but remained upright. The other 3 locomotives did not derail and neither did any of the cars.

      They would cut the remaining power away from the derailed locomotive and shove the train to clear, as originally intended. The derailed locomotive is then slowly walked back up onto the rails using rerailing ramps and/or blocks of wood. Maintenance-in-the-Way then comes out and spikes the rail back down, using wooden spike plugs in the now-deformed spike holes where the spikes were pulled out. Shouldn't take more than an hour.

    That's when the Trainmaster comes out and realizes that, since it was forward move after having already successfully traversed the switch in both directions, he can't fire you for running-through the switch. That's when he tells you to tie it down and go home. On UP, we call that 'DQ'... Disgust Quit

    Almost definitely a "split switch" where a thin flange on a wheel set can slip between a switch point and rail and "go the wrong way" while other side of wheel set tries to go the intended way but in this case involving the lead loco more probably the switch point mechanism itself not being properly fully locked into place (thru mechanical failure or human error) the likely cause.

    • @wccl
      @wccl ปีที่แล้ว

      Human error majority of the time when it comes to "picking the points"

    • @thekingsilverado3266

      Maybe they should try putting training wheels on locomotives?

    • @dennisbundy3042
      @dennisbundy3042 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The locos were travelling in the trailing direction of the switch and at no more than walking pace, therefore it can only be mechanical failure of the switch, most likely a check rail frog combination.

    • @thekingsilverado3266
      @thekingsilverado3266 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dennisbundy3042 All know about this year jack is the fact when we put the little train around the Christmas tree this year there ain't gonna be one NS engine or a CSX in the mix. We don't want the tree going up in one great big toxic fireball in the living room the old lady will literally sheet herself and I will get beaten to death by one of her great big cast iron cookin pans..

    • @dinkheinzman309
      @dinkheinzman309 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The MoW folks like to use that impossible scenario. The mechanical department will tell you it is geometrically impossible for a flange to “pick a switch”. The flange would have to be razor thin, even if the points were gapping a little….

  • @thekingsilverado3266
    @thekingsilverado3266 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think it might be time for the NTSB to start recommending putting training wheels on locomotives.

  • @rmaxproductions4568
    @rmaxproductions4568 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very interesting. I bet it got caught in that switch and didn't line it properly. That's probably not the case, though.

    • @neptunetrains
      @neptunetrains  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! That might be what happened, but I’m not sure.

    • @tomfrederick6083
      @tomfrederick6083 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since the movement had already traversed the switch in both directions prior to the derailment, without issue, it is a safe bet that the lead wheel picked the point. When wheels wear down the flanges develop a "sharp" edge, and if even a slight gap exists between the point and stock rails, it doesn't take much to force the point out of alignment. It would be interesting to view the forward-facing camera recording to see what it shows. There's no way the crew didn't properly line the switch, since a facing-point move had already occurred.

    • @rmaxproductions4568
      @rmaxproductions4568 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomfrederick6083 Oh I see. I knew they wouldn’t line that switch though, because that switch where it derailed doesn’t get lined too often, as it’s a connecting track from the CSX tracks to NS. It wouldn’t be their fault anyways. You are right, sir.

    • @slowpoke96Z28
      @slowpoke96Z28 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @rmaxproductions4568
      @rmaxproductions4568 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@slowpoke96Z28 I'm just not sure if that had happened or not. Another note is that switch I was talking about does not get lined much. So the engine had a possibility of jumping the track. I'm sorry if my original comment confused you.
