Train Running In Middle Of City Street In Augusta Georgia! Street Running Trains In America!

  • Norfolk Southern Freight Train Running In The Middle Of 6th Street In Augusta, Georgia! The railroad runs more than a half mile right down the middle of Sixth Street on the Norfolk Southern line. It looks like a trolley line running in the road but full size freight trains use the tracks a couple of times a day. A hundred year old railroad bridge is at one end of the street running track and a railroad wye for CSX is at the other end. The line that wyes off of the street running track has more trains on it. We stayed the night on the 8th floor of the Ramada By Wyndham in Augusta to see how many trains use the street track. Only one street runner train went through in the night and it was at about 4:44am. I filmed part of it for this video. It only had about 40 cars. I saw several CSX trains in the distance on the other line but they were pretty far away. There was a short movement in the middle of the next day but I believe it was only a light engine move. The train in this video is an empty intermodal train that I filmed a few years ago when I visited Augusta with my son. There just aren't enough trains running here to make it worth a visit. I visited the nearby freight yards and found the Norfolk Southern Heritage Unit sitting in one. The areas around the freight yards did not appear to be safe and my wife wouldn't get out of the car so I decided not to stick around those areas.
    Filmed February 22, 2022.

Yeah! Love a street running train! And a street train at night as well :) That would be the only drawback there - if there are folks living along the tracks and then the horn blasts at night. Not ideal, but it is a street runner so I would love it!

Another super video! Love that old trestle! Street running train brought back memories for me. As a kid I lived in Northern California and the tracks went up the center of First Street. And I just realized that for a lot of years my dad was the only engineer who ran the train thru town. The yard was in Eureka and he would have to go around Humboldt Bay to several towns where there mills to pick up lumber. Then he would retrace his route back thru town to the yard and make up the freight trains heading south.
Looks like you and Mrs. T had a great trip.

Yep, the trains run right through Eighth Street, downtown. Kind of amazing in this day and time. We have Norfolk-Southern and CSX both, in and around Augusta. NS tracks run right in front of Club Car, and right behind Mullins Crossing shopping center. You can park in the back, behind Ulta and Kohl's, and you can almost touch the trains when they come by. Glad you came by to visit.

I worked at Club Car for 14 years and I've seen many trains go by. Right after Desert Storm a train came by hauling 92 M1 tanks. I believe those Club Car tracks are CSX. Another day in 1990ish, a huge storm came through and washed out a trestle adjacent to Club Car property that had been backfilled decades before. The rails were left dangling in the air. CSX visited Club Car soon after begging for dirt to put under the dangling track. The executives of Club Car, still realing from the loss of our beloved coworker and his wife for a work time accident at the ungated crossing, agreed to give them the dirt...on the condition CSX install crossing gates. Unbelievably, they would not install the gates after the tragic accident but agreed two years later when they needed the track back up and running.

No, they have almost all dried up. Not much freight at all goes through there anymore.

I'm pretty sure the train that derailed in Graniteville in 2005 and had the chlorine release that killed several people and destroyed a textile company would have travelled down that track. Also, the far side of the river was originally Hamburg, SC, the destination of the first commercial railroad in the US. The founder of the town hated Augusta and built the railroad to try and divert freight (mostly cotton) to the port of Charleston instead of Savannah where it would have gone from Augusta. It is said he was buried standing up with his back (and behind) facing Augusta as a final insult. Hamburg died after several serious floods.

I'm in Walkerton, Indiana a track splits the town in half then crosses two main CSX tracks. The main tracks are busy in the late afternoon. Mostly been coal or cargo containers.

As the old slogan said Southern gives a green light to innovation as well as traffic signals which cleared quickly after the train passed thru. A very impressive bridge. Does it still.open for river traffic? In the block before the bridge in addition to the stop ahead and parking times is a sign proclaiming Yard Limits which probably confuses motorists. That consist had 5 unusual Trailer Train cars that may be just the frame for an autorack as they had no container brackets or 5th wheel for trailers. So like in golf you were just playing thru and you should be rewarded with a green jacket. Floral design of course!

by the way it's always a pleasure to see streetrunning trains. in the Netherlands we also had this type of railactivity but an act by gov made a direct end of it nation wide in 1983 sadly.
