I heard somewhere Korn got their signature sound by tuning the guitar lower than the bass. Hence the “slapping” sound. Love it! Wouldn’t have it any other way
This is Korn's heaviest album, it slaps from beginning to end and this song is so sincere because it feels like a total middle finger to the music industry, they wanted nothing to do with it! 😆

Random fact: during my high school baseball career, my senior year we got to have a song played as we walked up to the plate, this was mine, but just the instrumental obviously haha. But I didn’t swing for singles, I like the extra base hits… so “y’all wanna single?” Nah fuck that hahaha

I remember around 3 years ago we played this song, & my brother told me when I was like 4 years of age, he would play this song & I would sing it but instead of saying the f-word I would replace it with a b, so the chorus would like “Y’all wanna single say buck that, buck that, buck that!” & I laughed because I didn’t remember singing it like that at all lol.
Your interpretation was 100%. This song was meant as a big middle finger to the record labels and it worked for Korn. This song actually got radio play when it came out. Mind you it was edited of course but fans like me were definitely into it.
The label made Metallica do the same. On their second album, the song "Escape" was James' attempt to write a radio friendly song per the label's demand. The label wouldn't release the album unless James agreed to write a radio friendly song that the label could release as a single. The band hated the song and for almost thirty years they refused to play it live.
THE BIGGEST FUCK YOU TO A LABEL!! This is why Korn is legendary, they do their ahi their way and it’s still a fucking BANGER!! I’m still waiting for ROTTING IN VEIN That should be your next KORN song

Even though I know this is an old video, I just wanted to add that the story was basically the label approached them and said 'Hey, we'd really love to have a single' their management also came to them and said 'We would really like to have a smash hit single, man, can you dig it?'. Korn didn't want to sell out and change their sound nor could they truly break down their songs that had become smash hits to figure out the formula for making a new single. So they told the label to screw themselves and instead made this song as a middle finger.
there is not more than 10 consecutive seconds of this song that could have gotten airplay on commercial radio...they ensured that the suits got the message
And yes...hes talking about how people only want singles. .to bad you couldn't do the video..because it shows clips of how much money record companies are making off the artist
Yes this song is a commentary on the music industry. In their song, Reclaim my Place, Jonathon says, “something super fly never played;” and if you watch the in-studio videos of their early years, you can see (Mark?) McGrath hanging out at (indigo ranch?).
You are correct in your assessment. Korn was annoyed with the label getting on them about a single. This song and the awesome music video serve up the big middle finger to labels.
Your interpretation is on point. If I’m not wrong this for sony music. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. Basically record label wanted korn to make a radio friendly song. So this is it hahaha
I really enjoy this album (Take a Look in the Mirror) a lot, this album actually came out a few years after I discovered KoRn, so it was really the 1st new music I heard from them after I listened to their 1st 4 albums. So many bangers on here, I can play it straight through, no skips for me! Did my Time was also on this album, you reacted to it a while ago, you also reacted to a live version of the song Break Some Off. Other standout songs include Right Now, Counting On Me, Everything I've known, When Will This End. But the whole album is fantastic IMO, that classic KoRn sound, but chunkier, more grimey, and I love John's voice on this album! I feel like he really perfected his screaming on this one. Great reaction Kurtis!
official video is awesome. they destroy a record store. and the track length is the typical length for a radio single. it was a nice shot at the industry. hehe.
@kurtisb #kurtisb I’m sure by now u know,,, but, the label wanted KoЯn to do a rock ballad, the in thing with bands at the time 💰. Follow the Leader came after this, and 4+ X’s certified Platinum 💽. Yup, Sony asked KoRn to make a radio hit in their album Take a Look in the Mirror I believe. The song is practically a big middle finger to the music industry. Sorry I'm late😅
"Take a look in the mirror" was their last korn album before everything fell apart even in their music videos for this album not much work was done to it as if it was on a bad budget. After this album korn went all electro music cause head left the band following David. Head eventually came back but a feud between David the drummer happened and they never got back together. which is why all of korn new songs sounds off and incomplete. Sorry but the new drummer is awful not an awful drummer but a awful drummer for korn cause hus style is completely different than David's funk/hip-hop drum flow. Being a long time korn fan you knew something was off about this album that their sound slightly was different or things was going on in the band.
The reason why this one sounds off is because it was self produced, the riffs, drums are great, just not well produced. Rays great, the last few albums have been amazing, David's gone for good and has been gone for nearly 2 decades, suck it up
@@Jake-xb7nz korn is love and known for their unique sound and style hence all their old albums that being said with David's style of drumming with out all the members of that band that completes korns sound they don't sound like korn period. This song was created from the record label wanting Korn to do something radio friendly. They said FUCK THAT
All songs from "Take A Look In The Mirror" have this sound. The bass and guitars are very dirty. They sound amazing. Some of korns best songs.
Yes it is! Its funny listening to the members talk about this album cause they dont like it that much

100%
It's crazy that they made this song to give the record label the middle finger and then they released it as a single 🤣
This song really gets everybody amped up live!!!
Ive been fortunate to see Korn live 3 times for free and this song breaks the venue every single time.
Understandable about not wanting the official video getting blocked. With that said, definitely check out the official video. It's a classic
