After hearing Joel Schumacher decided to take the blame for it and not let the crew get hurt by the press though he made a bad movie I think it’s commendable that he defends the people who worked on it and takes the bullet so no one else does
I honestly think he thought he was making a good product. Not ridiculous at all. He just believed (like many, many people do) that comic books are silly child stuff and movies based on them should be equally silly and childish.
if you look at batman forever’s original script, it would have been a great movie, but a lot of it was cut out during editing. idk what happened with batman and robin though lmao
Honestly I think Joel Schumacher made good movies for kids but only in Forever did I notice some deeper themes building visually. As an Adult Forever is kinda decnt to me lol but Batman and Robin I can't stomach to watch again. Still I think all the actors, directors, and producers are exceptional talents; and I recognize chemistry needs to be perfect for a vision to truly come together. Movies are hard yo- Wb
I really think blaming the writer for a bad movie is unfair. It really is the director and producer that makes the decisions. If they thought the script was bad, then they wouldn't use it. Studios have also been known to take good scripts and turn them into garbage, a la Spiderman 3, Thor 2, and pretty much the entire DCEU.
I remember he once said in an interview "They are called 'comic' books, not 'tragic' books, and I think we always need to remember that this is a big pop-culture opera, not Medea." Making everyone wish for a different director...
the irony is comics are more serious then campy. Even in the 60s comics usually the main ones especially batman was very serious. Im halfway surprised they didnt add the pow etfect after batman punched someone
Elvis completely skipping over the fact that when Bane was planting the bombs he'd literally say "bomb" after putting down each one. I still giggle watching that.
Absolutely adorable. Bane was perfect in this movie, (for this kind of iteration) I just wish he had more screen time. Of course I like the dark knight one more, but these are two different characters going for two different things, and I love them. Bane is just a great character and I want more of him.
I think WB was lucky that Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond were on the air to preserve the franchise while the movies went downhill and they kept Batman out of theaters for 8 years.
Just to give you an idea of how derpy Batman Forever was, my 1995 dad wouldn’t allow me to mimic Riddler Jim Carrey because it was “too gay” at the time. It was a glorious time to be rebellious.
@@KalisShort Not really. Joel Schumacher is gay, and he pretty openly did things to the movies that reflected that. Such as the memed "bat-nipples and bat-codpieces".
@@idrinkrawmilk554 Gay people have always existed and will always exist. Before colonization many cultures were accepting of gay people. What I'm trying to say is: shut up and deal with it you bigoted snowflake. I'm gay and there's nothing you can do about it. Cry a little more.
I have massive nostalgia blinders but I've always liked the movies just because of that. He pretty much just wanted to make a really goofy, fun and exaggerated pair of movies and I think he succeeded. It's just the goal itself that people didn't like
As goofy as it is, I always get a little misty-eyed whenever Freeze takes out the glowing vials and says, "Take two of these, and call me in the morning." His love for his wife Nora and his desperation to find a cure for her disease are the only additions to his lore that no adaption, no matter how stupid, could ruin.
I think I was about 8 when I saw it in the cinema and the scene where Robin hung his clothes up to dry was the most memorable part and it had a real effect on me at the time. I was always a messy kid and oblivious to the benefits of tidying up but I also always harboured a secret fear of losing my family and used to have nightmares about it. The scene comes after Robin loses his family, and he shows Alfred that he's independent and capable and still moving forward just when he's being looked at as a victim. 8 year old me was very proud of him and the memory became a small touchstone for a developing mind and I hoped that I could be that strong and just carry on getting little things done for myself and survive if I found myself alone in the world. Being more present and more tidy and organised and doing inane things for myself because they needed doing helped to make me more capable of dealing with the dreams.
I love how villains had escape contraptions built into places they don't own. Like did he have a construction/engineering crew in there a month earlier building an explosive-proof saferoom under the circus arena? It reminds me of that Batman Returns movie where Penguin takes an actual elevator out of the sewers in front of everyone. Who the fuck is building this shit, and even if it was built by someone else previously, how are they controlling it?
You got to hand it to Schumacher. He really comes off as a class act. He owns these movies. Made the movies he wanted to make and is sorry if people felt disappointed. Doesn't blame fans, doesn't blame the cast, defends the writer, Takes all responsibility. Defends pretty much everyone besides himself. These movies... are not good. I think he went for something that didn't work out. He's made good movies, just not these two.
@@Psychedelicgothicpink I saw Falling Down in the theater, when it came out, and recently watched it again. It's a great movie, thanks to a tight script, solid direction and an amazing performance by Douglas. I Haven't see rampage yet. Is that the one based on the 80's arcade game? Or am I thinking of postal? Please let me know if you think either are worth checking out :) Cheers
For all the problems these movies had, as ive gotten older i can appreciate them more - i love this version of gotham with all the weird art deco neon light shit going on, i love the hammy acting and how over the top it all is
@@JDoe-gf5oz dude, you’re like the only person in the world who actually liked that movie… which is fine, I’m not telling you you can’t like it. But don’t try to tell me what style I like and don’t like ok
"What killed the dinosaurs? THE ICE AGE!" Is such a dumb line, delivered so perfectly. I mean, that's just factually wrong, Mr. Freeze. Can't just take credit for the work that asteroid did.
but the asteroid didn't kill the dinosaurs, i mean, it probably killed some by falling on their heads. What killed the dinosaurs is the giant scale chain reaction due to the asteroid impact, provoking volcanos to erupt in mass and then the climate going on a winter so long no big vegetation or dinosaur could survive (besides toxic ammounts of volcanic ash all over the place) , herbibores got sick and/or died, then carnivores ate those sick dinosaurs and died too, not counting the harsh unforgiving climate. Somethings for sure, the winter effect had nothing to do with the ice age , most probably not, that's because scientists could document several ice ages trough years, but couldn't get as far as to determine if there was a greenhouse effect during dinosaur times or if one was relatred to their exctinction. Who knows, maybe Arnie was right, Maybe, mr Freeze knew something we don't. This dumb 90's movie needs further investigation.
I think the reason Alfred liked the new robin so much is cause Alfred is an insane workaholic and he took one look at that weird goblin manchild and said "Yes, I'll be busy for YEARS cleaning up after this one". Edit - "Don't fret, I'll always have something in the works" Is both threatening AND reassuring.
I actually like Val Kilmer's Bruce Wayne more, since I always think Wayne is rather cold and jaded billionaire, probably even dead inside. I just thought Clooney's Wayne was too smiley and sweet instead of brooding. Mr. Freeze were really painful, but my oh my Poison Ivy is probably one of the best Batman villain ever IMO!
Bob Kane is not the real creator of Batman. He made the name and idea of a guy in a suit, which was a red suit with a domino mask and actual bat wings. The real creator is Bill Finger, he made the real lore behind Batman- the suit, the gadgets, the city, all of the stuff we've come to know, love, and associate with Batman. Bill never gets the credit he deserves
I remember watching the Bill Finger documentary on Hulu and its so sad how his entire family was basically forgotton in history until that man was so dedicated to getting the truth out that he was able to track down the granddaughter of Bill Finger
A name means fuckin nothing. to this day Bob Kane pisses me off, especially seeing documentaries on blurays about how genius he was. Bill should be co creator only with jerry robinson. would be the same if some hack came up with the name "star wars" in the 70s, then Lucas created everything, but got no credit for it before dying alone and forgotten.
when asked to do a painting of Batman, of which he had many he boasted about, he couldnt do it on the spot. he hired someone to do it. Bob Kane was a sleasy business man who hired creatives to work for him and then took sole credit.
my mother was crazy about Val Kilmer and other heart throbs from that era, so we went to see these a few times...there was applause for the butt/crotch shots. lol just some 90s mom thirst nostalgia
I mostly knew Ivy from the 90's comics and cartoon where she was more on the stoic and measured side... so THIS version kinda took me by surprise due to the ham and cheese XD !
Elvis, in continuing the Nicolas Cage saga, you've got to check out the Astro Boy 2009 film. Never before have I seen such a nonsensical children's plot balanced with such dark themes - and Nic does some spectacular voice acting in it.
I love those types of movies. With a whimsical plot about a character becoming a hero or going to a magical place, only for the much darker themes to show the real colors of the film. Just like Return to Oz or Coraline, god I love those films.
It has to be said that Joel Schumacher was an absolute G of a person with him standing up for his coworkers. Plus the dude was in general a super underrated director imo. RIP
I've really come around to loving these movies. I saw Batman & Robin in theatres as a kid, and loved it. I think as the years go on and see things in the present we don't like, we end up enjoying things from our past more.
Very true! I also watched this at the cinema as a kid with my mum and brothers. It feels attached to happy times. I have always loved these films.I get bored when it's all just dark and dreary I think these were great fun!
As a kid, my mom didn't let me watch any batman films... except for these two. She didn't have a real reason why she didn't let me watch Dark Knight or the Tim Burtons, but I just watched these two the most. They may be dumpster fires, but damn are they kinda nostalgic.
@@FafuchessNothing wrong with TDK trilogy. After these shit movies I didn't even want to watch Batman Begins and TDK because I assumed they're just crap. I missed quite a lot
15:00 I think Dick was intentionally trying to get in the cave here. Earlier in the movie Alfred told Dick that this room was the only room in the entire mansion he wasn't allowed in. He was using his ninja monkey skills to try to get into the room before the door shut behind Alfred. Feels more like Dick being a curious little kitty than a "he just happened to land in the Batcave" thing. Super minor but I had to show my super sick paying attention to the movie skills to Mr. The Alien.
The scenes between Jim Carrey and TLJ are even better when you know it was just a giant pissing contest between the two of trying to one-up each other.
Honestly I really enjoyed these movies growing up. I loved how it made Batman campy and fun, kind of like the older batman cartoons. I have a lot of nostalgia and love for these two crappy films, maybe its cause the outfits....it's probably the outfits...
i like the theory that the reason batman & robin is more wacky and odd is because the riddler literally took a big chunk of the IQ from the people of gotham so everything is dumber and makes less sense
That comment from Shumacher about loving a movie means you have to be thankful to over 100 people who made it possible, but if you hate it just blame the director, since that is why their names are there, is so wholesome. As janky and campy as they are, I have fond memories of them, and even rewatch them. They remind me of the joy of being a kid when you don't have to worry about every little thing making sense and just enjoying the experience.
41:31 one thing you probably didn't notice here: Bane gets send to get Freezes stuff Runs through the entire building Cut to Ivy and Freeze with BANE IN FRON OF THE DOOR Cut back to Bane packing everything and running back So Bane ran through the building, forgot what he was doing, ran back, saw Freeze and rembered, ran to his destination and packed the crap in the cart. It probably is just an editing mistake, but the "Bane is dum" version is hilarious.
Missing Fact: According to Val (of Last year), He was genuinely disappointed being on set. Nor the dreams of being Batman, all little more than an act (Val mentions how the suit was very uncomfortable to wear , like what Keaton wore in the first two.)
I actually like Forever, I think it’s an underrated movie. Sure it’s silly, but unlike Batman and Robin it actually tells an interesting story about Bruce Wayne. It’s one of the better Batman movies if you ask me.
I'm so glad to find someone that agrees with me on that. Rumor is the director's cut was substantially darker in tone with its portrayal of Bruce Wayne. I would've loved to see it tbh
No mention that Arnold REFUSED to shave his head so he wore a skincap which in certain frames is incredibly noticeable? Kind of like how the 60s Joker never shaved his mustache.
I honestly didn't mind Kilmer as Batman, I think he had a very reserved portrayal but in a way that's good compared to say George Clooney. I can look at Kilmer and think "That's a moody Batman right there" but I can't look at Clooney Batman and think anything other than "Yep, that's George Clooney" I don't think his style entirely meshed with the goofiness of the movies but I dunno, him being all cold and calculated vs Two Face and Riddler just worked for me.
Schumacher was such a legend for taking the heat on everything. I honestly believe he was handcuffed into making a toy commercial and just tried to make it fun for the audience.
Man aside from all its faults, it is still nice to see these behind the scenes clips seeing all the sets. If these movies were made today, behind the scenes would just be nothing but a sea of green.
Batman Forever will always be a guilty pleasure. Because of Jim Carrey's amazing campy Riddler, and Tommy Lee Jones trying to keep up with him, but failing upwardly. His performance is so stilted, it's funny to me.
idk why they ever woulda thought tommy lee jones would be the right guy for the job, even as a kid I coulda told you the guy was phoning it in and not trying lol
So true. Before the Nolan trilogy, this was my favorite Batman movie since it gave both heroes and villains an equal amount of screen time. Plus, Tommy Lee Jones was more Dick Dastardly than Two Face.
There’s no such thing guilty please people guilty pleasure to please other people opinions what movies are likable no such thing as guilty pleasure if you like it that’s good, other people don’t like it screw them as long you like it
Batman forever still is my favorite Batman movie. I love the cheesiness of it and the fact it doesn't take itself seriously, it's just so entertaining. I still laugh out loud at the dialogue in this movie
Reminds me of the street fighter Raul Julia when he knew his life was coming to an end and took the role of his sons favorite character. Val Kilmer I hope pulls through.
The batsuit isn’t all that strange when you consider the hyper-sexualization you see of women in movies by straight male directors. Dude just thought it was hot and we’re not used to seeing a gay director do the eroticizing we’re otherwise used to in mainstream movies.
So if he adds bat nipples that makes him automatically gay? What a dumb argument lmao, maybe it was just a design choice, or he did it to even out the sexualization of the females
That was literally the first thing I thought. And it's sad that I also thought he was from California. He went to school there and grew up in NY had sex with over 20k men. Yeah.
Oprah Winfrey did an interview with Arnold, Clooney and O'Donnell for Batman & Robin when the movie came out. Arnold made a joke and O'Donnell did a really mocking laugh and Clooney bumped him to tell him to stop. I don't think O'Donnell likes Arnold. For some reason, that has stayed with me for 25 years.
I gotta say I think Kilmer was the Andrew Garfield of the Bat-men in that if he'd have been given a better script he could've been the best Bruce Wayne ever. There's leaked footage of deleted scenes that would've allowed his emotional vacancy to pay off as he finally opens up to himself and confronts his feelings and guilt - the title "Forever" was chosen as the movie would've followed his struggle and finally conviction that he'd be Batman, forever. But a lot of it was meddled with by execs and producers after they got so burned from the reception to Returns
Whelp that batman smile is 100% now a meme haha, thank you Elvis for this hidden gem. Love what you do amigo, Whenever I see a new upload I get all giddy. Keep up the amazing work, we are all looking forward to whatever you do next!
Every single one of these review videos is a gem. I rewatched all of them countless times and everytime a new one comes out it just makes my day a lot better. Thank you for your work and uploads ! ☺️
Elvis' joy talking about the bad movies we all love deep down as a guilty goofy pleasure is always such a great way to escape all the bad & crazy shוte that's been going on in the world since 2020. I watch them when I need to forget about all my problems big & small!
its hard to forgive what he did to batman. This dude set the whole series back almost a decade with this crap he made, he almost ruined the coolest superhero for a whole generation.
My favorite thing about these movies is that Joel probably designed one of the best on screen Gotham aesthetics ever. the scale, grandiose buildings, the over the top + art deco & gothic architecture along with all the neons it's like cyberpunk Batman without any of the cyber, it dazzled me as a kid & its the prime reason I revisit these movies, it goes banana's on an OLED TV and i know for sure Arkham Knight took inspiration from it cuz a lot of the designs felt nostalgic to me. But i have never and will never give Joel Schumacher any flack for making these movies. As bad as they are i can find enjoyment in watching them & he said himself he didn't mean to make a bad movie he only wanted to entertain and that i was lol. Not to mention it became precursor to some the best Batman movies that have become classics. It's wild to think we got Batman Begins only 8 years after this debacle.
As a kid, I loved these, saw nothing wrong with them. And then I grew up and realized there was a bat credit card and built in ice skates and bad Mr Freeze puns😂
Two-Face is a very compelling character in the comics-a former district attorney who made it his personal mission to take care of crime in Gotham in a whole new way. I have no idea what the Two-Face in this movie is trying.
TLJ only did the movie for his son because two face was his favorite batman character and straight up told a producer he didn't understand the script, alongside the fact that he wasn't used to sharing the screen with another actor and didn't want to be one upped by Jim Carrey which led to him massively overcompensating. His performance in the movie manages to feel both phoned in and wildy over the top at the same time.
It's actually pretty funny when a guy fighting crime in a bat costume, fighting a guy with an ice gun and a plant-woman hybrid isn't considered serious enough. It's all absurd, really. Not that I'm disagreeing with it's awfulness, it's just funny on an ironic level
I think it has to do with the films being comedic then it is that the execution was botched. The 60s show is a complete parody of the original comics, and people love that show. The Schumacher films tried to do that, but mixed in the dark aesthetic of Burton, modern pop culture and weird sexual themes and it rubbed people the wrong way.
As I've always said while Val Kilmer played Batman like Bruce Wayne was cosplaying as Batman, George Clooney played both Batman and Bruce Wayne as if he was George Clooney. There was no difference in his portrayal of either. Say what you want about Michael Keaton in the role, he nailed both the Bruce Wayne and Batman sides of the character's personality.
My ex once met Chris O'Donnell in 2001 while working on Boca Grande at a resort, this particular gig was catering for a wedding that Chris happened to be a guest of. My ex loved the Batman films and Chris was probably the most notable person he had encountered while working there. Anyway, he had occasion to speak with him at some point when Chris approached the banquet table he was taking care of, and so my ex said to him "Hey, you're Chris O'Donnell right?" and Chris said "yeah I am, what's your name?" to my ex replied totally deadpan "I'm Batman." My ex was just trying to be silly, and so he was taken completely aback when Chris shot him a dirty look and said "ya haha real funny, fuck you man" and walked away.. So I guess maybe making those movies was an embarrassment to him by that point.. I think he thought he was being insulted, but that wasn't the intent behind it. Or maybe he was just having a bad night, who knows. He pretty much faded into obscurity not long after the early 00's anyway. I love these movies tho, they are cheesy and fun as hell.
8MM is one of the darkest movies I’ve seen, because of the honest, mundane and exquisitely-cruel nature that it describes exist within humanity. And Nick Cage is amazing as a troubled and modern-day noir actor, the antithesis of is “classic Cage.”
I said this on one of your previous videos and I don’t know if you saw it but if you were looking for movie suggestions, may I suggest “Titanic 666.“ It is really funny, in a way that it is terribly made, and I think your commentary would go great with it.
This was also the time when Val Kilmer revealed the massive ego he had. Even the Dark Knight has his ups and downs. Alfred was the only character in these 2 films that was good and even tho Michael Caine is the near perfect Alfred. It was the actor in these films that brought the loving/caring surrogate father-figure that made Alfred an icon.
joel Schumacher seems like a good guy. he stood up for his crew, and took all the blame. im betting he was cool to work with. its a shame he received so much hate for these movies. i loved them as a kid. and now as an adult,i still think they are a lot of fun. movies can be bad, but its important that they aren't boring. and they are far from boring. i cant believe batman and robin was listed as the worst movie ever made by someone. especially when "bobby z," and "in the name of the king" exist. (those are the only 2 movies ive ever watched that i had to turn off and never finished.) and joel Schumacher is 100% capable of making genuinely good/well made movies. falling down is one of the best movies ever in my opinion. and 8mm is really good too. im glad his batman movies exist.
As trash as these movies were... The music was spot on.. Seal, U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Bone Thugs n Harmony and Massive Attack had some absolute bangers in these soundtracks. Batman '89 and Batman Returns will always be top of the list for me though. Casting was perfect for both movies and they had the best representation of Gotham.
Dick "landing his ass in the Batcave" wasn't a mistake. He was up on the 3rd floor so Alfred would think Dick wouldn't be able to follow behind him, then Dick did the routine and slid into the silver closet to beat the door closing. He didn't know it was the Batcave, but he was very curious about why that was the only locked door. Elvis is so entertaining, and it's disappointing that he missed something that I realized when I saw this in the theatre when I was 14 years old. Edit: Wait wait wait wait. Elvis prefers George Clooney to Val Kilmer? JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. I don't know if I'll ever recover from this betrayal.
So cool how diverse your content is for someone whose been watching for 4 plus years I have to say I’m proud and feel like a good friend of yours. Your content always gets better just like mista gg and wendigoon. Y’all the best.
The original movies with, Keaton,Kilmer, and Clooney are a big part of my childhood, the toys, the food, the fuckin music, probably the reason I love Batman so much but not just because of the OG movies, its because Batman the character is dope af and the animated series along with the beyond and league stuff is some top tier storytelling. You're right tho, these kids dont know how good they got it, the Reeves Batman movie is perfection.
Fun fact; Merridian''s office is the same building as the Red Circle Club in John Wicke. The exterior is the Surrogate’s Court and the interior of the Red Circle Club in that film is the former ballroom of the Edison Ballroom from The Godfather where Luca Brassi is killed..The Edison Hotel still exists mind you but the ballroom has been split off and now has different owners who use it from private events.
I would love to see a massive review video encompassing all of the weird, and mostly bad, Dimension Films (Robert Rodgriguez) kids movies. Such as: Spy Kids 1-3, Sharkboy and Lavagirl, maybe even Shorts (whatever that is). These movies have always been a weird mystery to me, as I really really really really enjoy Rodriguez' Sin City adaptation. The jump from great/solid CGI in Sin City or even Spy Kids 1, to terrible CGI in something like Sharkboy&Lavagirl has always confused me.
Lowest bidder gets the CGI budget in every movie. Lower budget equal worse CGI obviously but since they're the only people in Hollywood not bound by a union they get paid the least, that ontop of other budget constraints exasperates the issue of bad/cheap CGI
Oh boy :D These batman movies had this weird effect with me as a kid where something dark and gritty that I like gets replaced with something babyish that leaves me confused. But still, these movies are great to watch whenever you're bored. Amazing reviews as always
15:00 It's not a mistake. He's swinging around like that so he can get through the door before it closes so he can see where Alfred and Bruce keep disappearing to.
I remember getting a glow-in-the-dark Riddler question mark t-shirt from the theater when this movie came out. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. ..
As someone who grew up on reruns of the Adam West Batman series I really like these movies. They pick up the vibe and goofyness of the 60s series and translate them pretty good to a more modern setting. Especially Batman and Robin is one of my favorite DC based movies ever...the random GothCard scene is a real classic!!! Not much a fan the of hourlong dark, depressing and (to me) mostly boring passages in most other DC Films. You can include tragic backstories without dragging them out over half a 3 hour movie...
Batman Forever will always be my favourite Batman film. You have to remember that it is supposed to be a goofy wacky movie. It’s over the top with beautiful visuals, crazy characters and cheesy plots. Just like the comics. Joel Schumacher even said it’s a comic book not a drama book. The reason I like this film and not Nolan’s films is because the dark knight trilogy is way too realistic and grounded. If you like that then good for you, but personally I feel Batman should be silly and unrealistic. It’s a man who dresses as a bat, there’s nothing realistic about that. I think they performances, costumes and humour is just great. Gotham looks just like Gotham should. Huge statues and bridges decorated with neon. Don’t hate on this film for being goofy because that’s a stupid reason to hate it. You have to understand what Schumacher was trying to do. It really is a good film if you watch it with that in mind.
One of my favorite lines from Batman Forever is "Holy Rusted metal, Batman" because my dad raised us with Adam West as the "real" Batman even in the late 80's/early 90's. It really stood out to me as a kid. My favorite quote from those movies, however, was "If knowledge is power, than a GOD. AM.. I......." delivered from The Riddler with epic acoustics.
I think what happened with this movie is that there was a clash of ideas and aesthetics and Joel decided to just be the tie breaker. What he likely didn't anticipate was that the clashing would be noticeable. As a result, the 1920s nostalgia and cyberpunk aesthetics stood out from one another and created an acid trip of a film. Joel should've honestly spent more time deciding what aesthetic to stick with so the clashing aesthetics didn't make people nauseous. I would kinda like to see both, but not simultaneously.
Forever is one of my favorite Batman movies. I might be a bit biased because Frank Gorshin is my favorite Riddler and Jim Carrey is clearly paying homage to that version of the character. But everything else works for me too. The way the city just pops with color, it looks like a comic panel brought to life. That shit is awesome. While I agree with most people's sentiments on Val Kilmer as Batman, I think he made for an excellent Bruce Wayne. The tone of the film felt like comics from the three classic eras. I totally buy that this is the same hero who fought against the Ten Eyed Man, Sweet Tooth, the Penny Plunderer, and the Bad Samaritan (only two of these are from the goofy Silver Age, one is from a serious Golden Age story, and another is from a serious Bronze Age story). And again, I love Carrey as Riddler. It's not only a nice homage to the classic Gorshin one, but it actually wasn't that far off from the comics. For the most part, Riddler was still a goof with stupid death traps and a dumb costume (though thanks to Gorshin it was sometimes a cool suit). It was only in comics that were released not long before this film that people started to take Riddler more seriously and make him a legitimate threat. I know everyone likes to think of him as the cool, calculating, dangerous villain he is now, but you gotta remember that for half of his history (1940's to the 1990's) he was a goof. Plus, the film was well acted, well shot, it looked good, special effects were a bit laughable, and the costumes were for the most part odd, but overall it's a good film.
I remember how hugely and heavily these movies were marketed. Like McDonald's did a whole promotion with a special cup with peel and win sticker and Batman toys. I remember seeing the commercials for them. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, Elvis! I love your videos and laughing at or enjoying the movies with you! You're awesome!
The scene at 14:50 Dick is curious about the secret door Alfred went thru, so he uses his ninja parkour skills to catch the door before it closes. I thought it was pretty obvious.
When Robin is doing his somersaults and hanging off the curtains he was actually trying to get down to the ground floor quickly so he could get into the entrance to the bat cave. He saw Alfred going inside there and was trying to figure out what was being hidden. Not saying the movie was any good mind you. But that had more intent then you seem to have picked up on
Batman has always been able to hover using his cape. It's in all of the content-- games, cartoons, films. Other than that, good review. I loved Batman Forever when I saw it in theaters with my sister as a kid. It's got a great "feel" to it that is not to serious and not too goofy. Some great one-liners ("That's never going to heal if you keep picking) and the bad guys breaking into Wayne Manor and blowing up the Batcave was chilling at the time. Batman & Robin is another can of worms...
Not gonna lie, I loved both of those movies much more than any iteration of Batman since. It's goofy, fun, has atmosphere, has actually attractive male and female actors in sexy roles and fantastic costumes. Music is also fantastic.
My Only issue with your great review is when Robin is swinging through that house and randomly swings in the batcave. He was wondering where that door lead because he saw Alfred go in secretly earlier in the film. So his plan was to swing around to catch the door before it swung shut. He didn't "randomly" find himself in there, he meant to do that. Other than that, LOVED IT MAN! 😂😂🤣🤣
Thanks for my biweekly fix Alien man. I have really enjoyed your transition from commentary (on TH-cam in general, but especially your channel) to movie reviews. I can tell you are passionate about cinema, and really enjoy your analysis of whichever silly or serious or outright Nicolas-Cage-Fever-Dream-Esque movie you decide to cover. My favourite goofy Batman movie is the one that came out just this year.
28:28 Not even gonna lie, by the end of it I was in tears. I'd say they'd need to chill out with the puns, but cool of them to go all in. (Especially since they're delivered by Arnie who just... embraces the cheese)
In a perfect world, Bill Finger would’ve gotten a lot more credit for actually coming up with Batman’s world and characters, and Bob Kane would’ve faded into obscurity

On set Joel Schumacher kept yelling out before each take “remember it’s a comic” to make sure that it stayed goofy
I remember he once said in an interview "They are called 'comic' books, not 'tragic' books, and I think we always need to remember that this is a big pop-culture opera, not Medea."
Making everyone wish for a different director...
That and he admitted to fucking 20,000 dudes
the irony is comics are more serious then campy. Even in the 60s comics usually the main ones especially batman was very serious. Im halfway surprised they didnt add the pow etfect after batman punched someone

Of course I like the dark knight one more, but these are two different characters going for two different things, and I love them. Bane is just a great character and I want more of him.

You okay?
I love how villains had escape contraptions built into places they don't own. Like did he have a construction/engineering crew in there a month earlier building an explosive-proof saferoom under the circus arena? It reminds me of that Batman Returns movie where Penguin takes an actual elevator out of the sewers in front of everyone. Who the fuck is building this shit, and even if it was built by someone else previously, how are they controlling it?
Maybe some of his circus crew were engineers and construction workers in past lives?? Lol

You got to hand it to Schumacher. He really comes off as a class act. He owns these movies. Made the movies he wanted to make and is sorry if people felt disappointed. These movies... are not good. I think he went for something that didn't work out. He's made good movies, just not these two.
After what Akiva Goldsman did to Star Trek, I feel even more inclined to blame him for this mess. Joel is just too nice, bless him.

He can and he did!
but the asteroid didn't kill the dinosaurs, i mean, it probably killed some by falling on their heads.

I think the real Bruce is supposed to be brooding. But George Clooney plays the part of Bruce Wayne (in the eyes of the people) pretty okay
Clooney would’ve been a good Thomas Wayne IMO.
Uma Thurman's version is probably the worst comic book live action version I've ever seen of anything. She's cool in Arkham games, sure.
Basically, Bob had the seeds for Batman while Bill planted the entire legacy of the characters and world.
I remember watching the Bill Finger documentary on Hulu and its so sad how his entire family was basically forgotton in history until that man was so dedicated to getting the truth out that he was able to track down the granddaughter of Bill Finger
and he just traced over the pulp character The Shadow for the drawing. Bill Finger took one look at it, saw how it was trash and fixed everything.

Two-Face is a very compelling character in the comics-a former district attorney who made it his personal mission to take care of crime in Gotham in a whole new way. I have no idea what the Two-Face in this movie is trying.
He was an even bigger clown than The Joker, which is ironic.
I think nips on a suit is by far the funniest thing to add to a suit. Like it's that extra step that makes history and is remembered.

My ex once met Chris O'Donnell in 2001 while working on Boca Grande at a resort, this particular gig was catering for a wedding that Chris happened to be a guest of. My ex loved the Batman films and Chris was probably the most notable person he had encountered while working there. Anyway, he had occasion to speak with him at some point when Chris approached the banquet table he was taking care of, and so my ex said to him "Hey, you're Chris O'Donnell right?" and Chris said "yeah I am, what's your name?" to my ex replied totally deadpan "I'm Batman." It's Michael Caine, not Crane.
Fun fact: If you say My Cocaine, it sounds like how Caine pronounces his own name.
joel Schumacher seems like a good guy. he stood up for his crew, and took all the blame. im betting he was cool to work with. its a shame he received so much hate for these movies. i loved them as a kid. and now as an adult,i still think they are a lot of fun. movies can be bad, but its important that they aren't boring. and they are far from boring. i cant believe batman and robin was listed as the worst movie ever made by someone. especially when "bobby z," and "in the name of the king" exist.
I will agree the sets are awesome here, they're magical. Honestly the new batman movie has really good sets too.
I honestly enjoy the Schumacher Batman movies more than anything that Snyder did with the character.
@@stinkygoat2686 I may agree.
Oh boy :D
These batman movies had this weird effect with me as a kid where something dark and gritty that I like gets replaced with something babyish that leaves me confused. But still, these movies are great to watch whenever you're bored. Amazing reviews as always
Batman Forever isn't that bad. Now Batman and Robin is another story.
Exactly!! Batman Forever was great in my opinion, Batman and Robin is just a joke to me lol
15:00 It's not a mistake. He's swinging around like that so he can get through the door before it closes so he can see where Alfred and Bruce keep disappearing to.
I remember getting a glow-in-the-dark Riddler question mark t-shirt from the theater when this movie came out. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. ..
Lmao I had pajamas
I would like to point out that John glover is the voice of riddler in most cartoon adaptations
The soundtrack for each of them went pretty hard though.
Especially Kiss From A Rose and Gotham City.
But that had more intent then you seem to have picked up on
Robin should have said, "I'm not going to kill you. But I don't have to save you."
You qualify a good Batman movie on sexy roles and an atmosphere that failed to be any good? Christ lol
😂😂🤣🤣
Right!
28:28
Not even gonna lie, by the end of it I was in tears. I'd say they'd need to chill out with the puns, but cool of them to go all in.
(Especially since they're delivered by Arnie who just... embraces the cheese)
Arnold has always acted cheesy lol
In a perfect world, Tim Burton would have directed Batman Forever and Batman and Robin and the franchise would be up and running to this day
In a perfect world, Bill Finger would’ve gotten a lot more credit for actually coming up with Batman’s world and characters, and Bob Kane would’ve faded into obscurity
