Nehru was centre around which all great leaders gathered and built this beautiful country with a beautiful constitution. Like any other human and leader he and others have made mistake, but we as a society has let down his vision. criticize but not hate, his contributions are way way more than his mistakes. Nehru's contribution can never be forgotten.

Hindu rate of growth, taking Kashmir to the United Nations, turning down permanent seat offer to the UNSC (with veto), Hindi-Chini bhai bhai and then losing half of Ladakh....Soviet socialist model... distrust and almost killing the capitalist class, license raj days - Modi had to cut his arm off to undo these suicide attempts.

A hindu rashtra would have been a lot better than a secular nation. At least we didn't have to put up with Zakir Naik, Owaisi, Afzal guru, Umar Khalid, and Sharjeel Imam. Country would have been more prosperous and developed. Massacre in Kashmir wouldn't have occurred. Congress would have worked towards development rather than creating votebank. Above all, we didn't have to put up with home grown terrorism.

Outstanding interview M. K. Venu ji. An absolute privilege to hear Prof. Purushottam Agrawal ji, especially hearing him speak of Panditji speaks volume of his commitment to Nehruvian ideology and a clear in depth understanding of Nehru's outlook on so many aspects. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks The Wire team.

I am so glad to note there are still so many from the majority community who are for a plural, inclusive India. Nehru's adoption of the middle path is the unique and striking quality about him.

They said India is Indira and vice versa. Modi is following in her footsteps! Or trying very hard. In reality Nehru is the soul of India. Most Indians follow the Nehruvian model without realising it. This bothers the right wing. That they are unable to banish the man from the firmament. But such has been the agenda always. Even the best of them like Vajpayee resented the shadow of Nehru and avoided praising him as far as possible. But he was a decent PM because he did not abuse or criticize his predecessors. Modi has heaped abuse on Rajiv Gandhi in the last general election. Why??

Exactly, right wingers cannot comprehend what contribution Nehru/Gandhi has for hinduism. Both feared Ambedkar to their bones and they made all the possible amendments in their approach to not to let Ambedkar take the driving seat. Todays brahmanvaad has roots in their dual approach towards hinduism and its traditions.

    Hello Purushottamji,
There is a considerable skew in the capabilities of the right wing, centre and left wing. The right wing has a massive organization like the RSS. How it grew so big and where do they get their funds is another discussion. The discourse of the right wing is now overpowering any centrist secular options. The literal mapping of RSS on to BJP and a similar setup not existing on the otehr sides is very concerning. Which is that organization or combo or organization that will fight the battle of keeping India liberal, secular and progressive is a question.
At an individual level you are doing this to a large extent. However competing with the right wing might is a challenge which individuals cannot take up successfully.
As a party the Congress needs to really really reinvent itself to take on this continous assault on the liberal and progressive India.
Let us not forget that in the polity of Nations if India has to stand up with pride, we need to be a liberal progressive democratic country. People might quote china as an example. However China is not successful in earning world respect in anything other than being a world manufacturing hub and money and brute power which the world is now resisting. A majoritarian India cannot earn world respect.

I have read the book and it is really a balanced view on Nehru and Nehruvian idea of India. The man had many 'flaws' according to today's India but, he was well versed in lot of subjects like philosophy, world history and even ancient history. We are lucky to have a PM who had the guts to criticise himself under a pen name or else we would have been under constant police watch and authoritarian institutions. Its a very good read.

Venu, you need to update your interviewing skills please. Ask a good question to the interviewee and let the person answer | share his or her thoughts | rationale for the benefit of the viewer(s)
Often I wonder, why so many journalists of our times suffer from “studied silence anxiety”?
Being able to respectfully and quietly receive other’s point of view | answers | thoughts is no sign of weakness; in fact, it is the sign of maturity | humility | curiosity | curtesy | wisdom | courage and character
    Wish you well always,
    Regards,
    Satya Chari

Venuji kindly refrain from interrupting it really disturbs the thought process. More than a interview it seems like you are advancing a personal conversation. Can understand your enthusiasm as the subject is very interesting but it does not bode well for the interview.

38:00 I find it hard today to expect that we as a society can reach any point of mutual respect with anyone despite differences bcz for that you have to have immense humility. A society, where chest-thumping and demagoguery is commonplace that's hard to achieve.

Simply put Nehru gave us some kind of stability, prevented civil war in a poor country and did not let a famine happen. He loosely joined the Soviet camp and imported the socialism style planning model. These kept us alive but resulted in license permit raj, public sector inefficiencies and made us a solidly 3rd world country. He sat with Jinnah and signed to partition India, then taught the Hindus secularism and gave half of Ladakh to China. So in balance - not a disaster but not challenging the Hindu gods either in stature.

Rightly explained that rise of bjp & rss has been because of their dedicated efforts in moulding the mood of people in favour of their definition of nationalism and secularism, and failure of Congress & other parties in keeping alive the actual meaning. As a matter of fact, the Congress got busy in enjoying the benefit of power for a very long period and allowed rss ideology to flourish knowingly or unknowingly over the years resulting into present day scenarios .Hope from congress seems to be dismal.

YOU have said it ! Don’t you think if we keep religion as a private thing to be practiced at home chosen by an individual after the age of 18 yrs , we would be able to keep our unique ness that India was snd hopefully will remain . I will read your Hindi versmion of the book .
And I don’t think people like jaggi vasudev Or Ram dev must propagate a thought process . (Why not Christian Jain Buddhist and Islam then) therefore make education better , not destroy or demolish our rich history so that people begin to think by themselves . Thanks Purishottamji

Patel was the part of pro-hindutva lobby of the Congress & ultimately his views, not of Nehru prevailed about issues like Kashmir, Hindu Code Bill and the First President prevailed, as Nehru wanted C.Rajgoalachari to be the president, but pro-hindutva lobby won and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the president, who went to inaugurate the refurbished Somnath Temple that Nehru didn't like at all!

Now Rs 5 lakh bond imposed on cleric for nod to Chalisa recital at UP mosque. The decision to allow a Hanuman Chalisa recital inside a mosque has led to strong pushback from the mosque and the administration at a village in Baghpat. The cleric who had granted permission has been asked to go and both he and the person who played it have been challanned with Rs 5-lakh personal bonds each. The village, Vinaypur, is home to about 8,000. On Tuesday, Manu Pal Bansal played the Hanuman Chalisa inside the local mosque with permission from the cleric, Ali Hasan. Bansal is national vice-president of an organisation that has been seeking population control laws, Jansankhya Samadhan Foundation. He live-streamed the video, in which the Hanuman Chalisa is playing with just him in attendance at the mosque. The day he held the recital, neither police nor the local administration took any action. The mosque’s managing committee, too, did not approve but did not stop Bansal that day. Hasan said, “He came to me with a request to sit inside the mosque. How could I say no? Everyone is allowed to be in god’s presence.”
