In this 2009 documentary, FRONTLINE correspondent Hedrick Smith examines why it’s so hard to keep our waters clean. Through interviews with scientists, environmental activists, corporate executives and average citizens impacted by the burgeoning pollution problem, Smith reveals that a growing environmental threat came not from the giant industrial polluters of old, but from chemicals in consumers' face creams, deodorants, prescription medicines and household cleaners that found their way into sewers, storm drains and eventually into America's waterways and drinking water.

Been on the bay all my life. None of this is exaggerated. In the 70s when my dad was a kid you could see six feet down, now you're lucky to see six inches. 400 years ago you could see the bottom in the deepest parts of the bay.

I grew up in the 70s and would go in the summer to the Chesapeake and dont ever remember seeing 6 ft or 6 inches down in that brown water. But there was lots of crabs and channel catfish.

My bother in-law has his pilots license . We flew to McMinnville from Seattle, which is not far at all by plane. But, we mostly went along the coast, ir somewhat in.
And as beautiful as this area is, the thing that stood out was all the pollution in the wetland areas.
We flew quite low, and you could see the trails from farms, and industrial areas that would lead out towards the larger bodies of water, then out to sea.
It was quite depressing! That was about 30 years ago, and i can only imagine that things are far worse.

Wow I thought everything was so much cleaner then when I was was a kid. That native on the horse commercial made us feel so bad. We just wanted to clean up the park, the sides of the road. I remember joining so many clean up projects. I didn’t know we still had pollution issues like this. Shocking

When you find out that water treatment facilities don’t even try to remove pharmaceutical waste, and that we’re drinking each others’ blood pressure medication and antidepressants and birth control, because they haven’t bothered to address it 😅
The laws haven’t evolved but society’s use and production of novel chemicals and medications have greatly evolved. Contaminants that aren’t explicitly addressed in legal limits are not removed. And our laws are not all that protective. When you hear a legally acceptable level, know that there is assuredly published scientific evidence for harm in lower exposure concentrations.
Anyone else like to play these videos to fall asleep to? They are very well made lol and they sound soothing... I never know how old these videos are lol, some are newer but some are from when i was a kid...

I love Frontline. They tactfully get the point across with facts. I’m as conservative as one can be, but I consider Frontline PBS as unbiased as something could be in 2022.

Then please get as motivated and strident as the rest of us about making sure we don't have more oil pipelines near waterways and cracking down on agriculture and chemical companies

As an international environmental law lawyer, I can’t explain how long this has been going on and what we don’t know is shocking. And actually bottling water is NOT the answer

Every year we drive from DC to the bay to celebrate July 4th or Labor day, etc. Stopping at Royal Farms Gas stations to get gas station chicken is a tradition we share with out of town friends on vacation with us. Everyone's always shocked at how damn good the chicken is. Even among all the crab, there's always the famous Eastern Shore fried chicken. No one would think the bay has some of the best fried chicken in the country. After seeing this, I'm not sure how stoked I'll be about that chicken anymore. And thinking about how the whole area is based on such a macabre exploitation of animals and how we contribute to it, really takes the wind out of what we're doing over here. Poor little bird, it'll never be extinct cause it's born to die.
For the fact that she said in the first one minute of the video “if it would kill animals it could kill you” is where your answer lies.
Had we cared to protect those animals unconditionally, and lived harmoniously with nature we wouldn’t have reached here.

Unfortunately, as of late, they no longer seek the truth but work to support narratives that align with the powers to be. Little by little, revisionist history permeates through sites like this to craft a narrative seemingly true, to those uneducated in the facts, too lazy to do so, but rife with little untruths, mischaracterizations, or glossing over facts. PBS has become an activist news, documentary site that no longer tells a story but uses the story to drive a narrative. They look great, have great orators but they all, predicable, in the end drive home a point of their design. Very subtle to egregious, Nixon, a republican founded the EPA, but he could careless about the environment, really. He hired William Doyle Ruckelshaus to be the first director of the EPA, this guy was an environmentalist, before the word was coined, and he made decisions, not based on facts, that we now know have coast the lives of millions, banning DDT. People in Africa still suffer from his decisions. Then we go to Reagan, who the claim pushed for deregulation, he did and the economy took off, but it was this deregulation that made the environment suffer. Really, Reagan hired the same hard as. environmentalist Nixon hired to set up the EPA William Ruckelshaus returned to the position from 1983 to 1985, as the fifth Administrator of the EPA, during the Reagan administration. In 1973, he was also the acting FBI Director. So, don't believe what you read because it sounds solid, it's not.
PBS is still one of the best things going in the USA. It's sad that people attack them for having the word "Public" in their name :(
THIS is good but too often they choose politics and manipulation. Just give us the facts and avoid everything else.
This documentary should be required viewing in all colleges and universities, along with other documentaries dealing with environmental concerns. It should be viewed in corporate boardrooms, town meetings in rural and urban communities. The burgeoning populations of the WORLD need to be informed as to the critical state of our ecosystems! For the survival of our own species, and the other forms of life we share this planet with (and upon which we depend for our own survival) we need a well-informed populace that will concede the necessity for drastic changes in our way of living and working.
Without the political will to make the necessary changes, it won't happen soon enough. Without a well-informed public to press the politicians into action, we are dooming ourselves.

Former Stafford county resident here. Grew up off a creek leafing to the Potomac river. I remember them dredging my back yard creek as a child and going boating/fishing. In the mid 90s there was plenty of pollution. A constant oil slick and very murky water. Plenty of trash. No one was willing to swim in it. Hope things get better.
I was stationed in the DC area two time and served about 7 years there. Both times I used my Berkey at home, changing my filters every 2 months, for all my cooking and drinking needs and when out and about I always carried and drank bottled water. I Retired and came home. I can't believe 25 years later, after all these years nothing has changed... and it has gotten worse.
I moved from the pollution back east and
sought better environmental management.
My faucet water comes from glacier melt.
I'm old and won't be alive when that faucet
flow is scheduled to become a memory.

There certainly are many examples of over-regulation that comes down to mainly a form of additional taxation than safety/benefit although!
Jacques-Yves Cousteau stated in his documentary films back in the 1960s and 1970s that the Chesapeake Bay's destruction due to contamination, would be the last warning that the oceans were next. And once the oceans were contaminated, all of life in earth would be in the balance.
Earth is finite. Pollution for greed is insane.
Happily we will all be dead soon.

I am from the Midwest. Whenever I was an OTR trucker, I remember being in PA and seeing signs “Entering Chesapeake Bay Watershed”. I always took it be mindful of your potential pollution. I really didn’t realize how hypocritical that sign was.
No mention of military installations in either of the 2 locations. They have been a huge factor in pollution forever but somehow get a pass. It would be nice to see an updated version of this old piece.
Yeah that chemical they spray to put out fires ... they spray it also as "tests" that it functions
PFOS and other crap they frequently use yes. It was a huge problem in Okinawa, Japan, where I used to live and where the US has the largest overseas military facilities
Annapolis is right on the chesapeake but they are regulated by the EPA. They dont get a pass so to say. Theres a waste water plant nearby these installations. So id like to hear what these military bases are doing that are so bad. not arguing with you just looking for more answers. We know there not dumping agent orange in the bay.
I think it's because if they did, they'd have too much material to cover. The pollution from military installations needs an entire documentary to itself. The city I live in had 5 active bases at one point. Around them tends to be very low income neighborhoods - so poor folks are also being disproportionately affected.
Write your local PBS, you might even be able to track down Ken Burns or another documentary film maker and let them know your concern.

Industrial Waste should be looked at in this case. Starting early is the best way of getting ahead to build wealth. Most times, it amazes me greatly how I moved from an average lifestyle to earning over $63k per month, Utter shock is the word. I have understood a lot in the past few years that there are lots of opportunities in the financial market. The only thing is to know where to focus.
The decision to invest is an acknowledgment that comes with certain risks. Not all investments will do well and some may lose money. However, without risk there would be no opportunity to potentially earn the higher returns that can help you grow your wealth.
I keep wondering how people earn money in financial markets, i tried trading bitcoin on my own made a huge loss and now I'm scared of investing more.

We need to hold our representatives accountable, meaning they need to fight for tighter Environmental laws and procedures. Nitrogen and Phosphorous can be extracted from the waste, which is shown in this doc. There are various types of treating wastewater which eliminates these two harmful agents. We (general public) need to keep our politicians accountable and that is the solution to every problem, including this Environmental issue. If EPA's hands weren't tied and if they could effectively go after the big companies that pollute the environment, then nobody would need to give up meat. We do that by voting politicians who will protect EPA. Who will have the public interest first.

for 26 years i sprayed PFOS across the globe. the last contact i had was over twenty years ago. i recently had my blood tested for 40 different types of PFAS. of those tested i have six. the test shows i still have 16.15 ng/mL of PFOS (firefighting foam) in my blood. PFOS is an endocrine disruptor. i recently had my cancerous thyroid removed. ive had two basal cell carcinomas removed from my face and shoulder. i have high cholesterol that is not controlled by diet and/or exercise.

I can't wrap my head around what we humans are doing to mother earth and to the humans that live here.
My husband is a Marine. He was stationed near camp Lejeune first he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 now about 3 years ago he was diagnosed with lymphoma. I've been going through this crap with him every step of the way. This last round has crushed his spirit. I don't know what to do anymore!

Here in Alaska we stopped fishing for crab in our area for five years.
The population came back up to over normal. Went from maybe 1 in the pot to 15 in the pot. In five years of leaving the bay alone. We halted all fishing. Not just commercial.

my sense is you would not love to see it remember Trump pretty much completely dismantled the EPA. I think if anything this can give you some up front look as to why they wanted to do that - make america toxic again
update- in the thirteen years since this documentary was aired the EPA has not taken action to curb the growing pollution amounts and sources. the problems continue to increase as consumerism grows with the ever-growing population that is continually bombarded with "newer better faster more convenient easier prettier stronger water proof dust proof stain proof nonstick no muss no fuss" advertising of "the latest and greatest" products that will end up in a landfill or on/in the ground where they'll ll seep their toxicity further.

I've lived near Puget Sound greater Seattle area most of my life. When I seen the divers find melting star fish, I knew we were doomed. This is world wide. Wherever industry went so went the ecosystem. Big business has moved destroying one pristine area after another ALL OVER THE WORLD!😡😥💔☠️

It's a global crisis; humans populate like locusts, just in a slower motion degradation of the land they occupy. 1-child per family should be law for many decades into the future then 2-child after for many centuries... You list the problem; nobody ever mentions any solutions... I give the solution!

We live in MD near the coast. I refuse to let my kids play in the water especially after a rain. Sandy Point is such a beautiful spot that we can’t fully enjoy. And we only drink and cook with our highly filtered water.
Same no matter where I live state,city. It’s dangerous for parents to allow their children or children in their care to play in rain water puddles etc. it is sad that so many simple joys for children cannot be enjoyed because $£€¥$ comes first ‘ to too many people in charge. I’ll keep praying for humanity and I’ll keep praying for all the people in charge . For them to have compassion and to do right against all odds and obstacles thrown at them or pressuring them to do wrong or greed getting over them. I pray to Jesus Christ almighty that they really consider their actions before they hurt humanity even more.

We can look at Easter island as an example (historical evidence of net outcome) of what happened if we continue down this path.
LOL! If there is one thing we have plenty of, it's trees. There are not enough mills. The mills can pay low prices for trees because there are so many, then sell the lumber for a killing. Proof: pulpwood $7.00 per ton. Chip-n-saw $18.00 per ton. Saw logs, $30.00 or so per ton if you find someone to pay you for them!

@@richard6719You are comparing apples to oranges. Passenger pigeons were hunted faster than they were replaced. Trees are planted in greater numbers than they are cut. Example: in 2020 I had around 20,000 loblolly pines harvested. This year I had 64,000 planted. We have 668 thousand acres of forest land in Alabama, 183 acres of which are mine!

I live in Washington state and I am sure you are aware of the forest in this region. Areas like Indonesia, So america, Malaysia, West Indies, many Asian countries are being deforested at a rate the size of rhode island every year for the last 30years and are NOT being replanted with trees. In this state the only trees that are being replanted are the ones with quick(relatively) commercial value. Losing much of its biodiversity that so much other life depends on. But who gives a shit right. Also I lived in Alabama and Georgia for several years and there too it’s losing some of its biological diversity….. on a side note I am very envious of your 183 acres and it sounds like you take great pride in your land. I only have 15 acres. But land costs here is astronomically high compared to the entire east coast and Midwest.
We need to take such better care of this precious planet and ALL life on it.
The question is how? We do definitely need to rethink our land usage. Most of the problem seems to be caused by the HUGE corporations amd big money. I have one question... why do people go out into the rural areas then insist on clearing the land? If they want to farm why not go to a state that has better conditions and environment for farming.
Who cares? Just move to the poor to the contaminated areas and let the rich live above them. Problem solved. =P (sarcasm)

Just when you think front-line documentaries couldn't be any better, they kick it up a notch...or two. This is my favorite channel on youtube. I used to be from Puget Sound then moved to Texas. I left there because the infrastructure is horrible, only to discover the same traveling across America. I hear people eating this stuff from the Sound and frowned upon it and myself, had been contracting unusual skin diseases. When I started collecting rainwater in Texas for daily home usage, this all went away. It didn't fix the problem because we're all surrounded by it.
This is an amazing production. Great job highlighting a VERY serious issue. We are trashing the planet, and with it ourselves.

The Chesapeake Bay was paradise to me as a child. In the 70's My Grandfather had a houseboat docked in Maryland & everyday I'd pull up sunnies, bluegills, yellow perch & catfish while fishing off a floating platform at the end of the docks. My Grandfather would pull up traps full of blue crabs right off the side of the boat. It's heartbreaking to see the bay has become so degraded.

I was there in the 70s, and I grew up at the mouth of the bay. The Chesapeake is far better off today than at that time. Overfishing is likely the problem in addition to the growth in population. We have made great progress in the US, and we must be careful not to destroy agriculture while making additional progress. But this hit piece is far too political to be helpful.

I've bike toured much of the country and I have to say the absolute worst water I've ever seen was in Missouri. I'm used to being able to jump in rivers and cool down during the summer heat, but you're out of your mind if you do that there. I passed by one of the drinking fountains along the Katy trail one day when it was 100F, and right as we were leaving a worker pulled up and put warning signs up to not drink the water 💀

Great documentary. As much as I know each one of us must take responsibility for the way we live with respect to the earth, it is difficult not to be angry with these huge companies that bought up all of their competitors, a small group of people with an overload of testosterone who want to be the BIGGEST and stretch far and wide with their business reach, regardless of whether it is hurting people, the quality is definitely compromised, and the pollution is concentrated in such a way that it cannot possibly be managed without dire consequences. I watched a video 20 odd years ago called Food, Inc.. Once upon a time before Tyson and their gluttonous growth that makes no sense at all, there were approximately 150 small farms that supplied their local grocers in the US. Now there are 2 farms, Tyson and Purdue. Food cannot be industrialized and remain healthy and sustainable, global food companies are giving us foods that are poisoned and lacking in nutrients. Our only hope is to return to the small local farms and businesses. But there have been several concerted efforts to wipe out the small players, now that we are almost completely enslaved by corporations. Please try to shop small when possible
Can't agree more. The fact is our corporate monopoly laws aren't working &/or aren't being enforced. And the practice of buying-out as many competitors as possible has spread from the oil industry all the way to our retailers, taking on everything in-between. The ability to do this is permitted by whatever politician(s) that enjoys generous "support""donations" or promises of a lucrative position for the politician to take advantage of as soon as his term is over.
It's disgusting and going to cost far more than anyone wants to give any thought to. So we need to be holding ourselves accountable for who we elect.

I’ve stopped buying mass produced food…yes it’s more expensive, and it’s cheaper than going to the doctor. In addition, if more of us do it, it will send a clear message to these huge agricultural operations.
I don’t buy things with high fructose corn syrup. I buy local whenever possible, and I’m just eating less to make up for the difference in price.

I live in Port Orchard which is a ferry ride from Seattle. This area is really nice with a low population, great water, view , and somewhat undiscovered by people moving here. My granddaughters live in Olympia and spent time on some of the local islands and came to love the marine life I hope it is all still there when they have their kids. If you go to Olympia there is a great running Artesian well that runs 24/7, tested regularly, and is in the downtown area. I have been filling up jugs from there since 1981. I love good clean water!
Low population because the water is no so great. If you want to see what clean water really looks like, try the pacific islands.
Being from Michigan, I grew up understanding and later appreciating "fresh" water. Only as an adult, then I finally learn that our state's leaders have no concept of how wonderful this resource is and that it should be protected. Algal blooms, agri-waste etc., have just about ruined the world's 5th largest source of fresh water. We might as well dump several thousand tons of salt in it for the way we manage it.

I will always admire the work my ex did in getting my city to fix it's combined sewer overflows that polluted in to the James river after every rain. We had the 2nd oldest municipal water system in the country at the time and now 20 years after replacement the local creek is full of life as it should be. The restorative power of nature is tremendous.

I'm a farmer, former logger, and former commercial fisherman...lol. I actually used to live in king county as well. What a horrible place... Worst county ive ever seen in 30 states. Those forests are overrun with homeless junkies. I've heard women being raped in the "forest" by homeless regularly from my damn apt. People being beaten and robbed 500 feet away and you cant do anything. If I shot the perps Id be hung by liberals before Police even arrived (the next day). Even found violent high junkies asleep in my truck.

Great message and exactly why the Chesapeake Bay is going to be just fine long-term. In fact the bay is better off than it was in the 70s, because of actions like your former hometown. Same thing goes for Tampa Bay. It used to be far worse than it is today.

I worked "The Great South Bay" of Long Island. Started in "72" with my toes in the water. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean. 80 miles off the coast and the water felt tropical. The waves crashed, my toes inhaled the sand. A wiggle of the toe, excitement filled my soul. The agitated salt air cleansed my mind. I was adrift on sand bar. My toe in the sand.

This was published in 2009. I live in Seattle. It has gotten Way better since then in the Puget sound. Between the UW and NOAA being present here its actually been very helpful. Currently we are kicking out the fish farms and changing their regulations. Long ago Atlantic Salmon got into the Sound due to fish farming. All over the news they called all fisherman to go fish out those Atlantic salmon. There was NO limit. These things don't go away overnight though. So even though many things have changed we still need to do more. To save our local Salmon population UW has had a long running program. Where kids in elementary school get fertilized eggs and once they hatch they go to their designated stream or river to let their baby salmon out. These super fund sites are terrible. Because you have a program like that. But then you end up sending your baby salmon through these places. So we can't fix the populations if you are just sending them to their death through those sites

I follow a Canadian sheep and grain/bean family farm, their neighbor has a poultry operation and they use the sheep and chicken manure instead of chemical fertilizers, and are very careful about preventing manure run off from getting into the water. This just seems to be good management, why can't we do that here?
It may need heat treating or something here to get rid of the ecoli. These factory farms are very concentrated. That's my guess, or just lack of will.
I've seen these type of documentaries and it makes me sad to see how animals are treated and authorities MIA.

The problem goes so much deeper than you could even think. I have been in the water treatment business for 30 years and to say it has gotten worse is scarily understated. I worked for a very large company Ch2mHill and we treated the water on many of the military bases around the U.S and the world. Let me say that they took this job very seriously and did an outstanding job in making sure that the water was safe in all aspects. Now for the not so good news. Ch2mHill was bought out by Jacobs Engineering firm a few years ago and they have only one concern and that's profit. Since their takeover they have removed(fired) all ,yes all existing Licensed Water treatment Operators and replaced them with non skilled, non experienced employees from temp. agencies straight off of the street. Most hired could not give one damn about the water. The Operators that were let go(forced out) by Jacobs each had at least 20 years of water treatment experience and some up to 40 years, myself was 30. We made the top pay for water treatment operators standards as Ch2mHill went to great lengths to seek out the very best operators out there. I was contacted and then hired away from another company after being nominated for Water Treatment Operator of the year. The pay was from $28 - $32 per hr. and now they as stated are hiring off the street for $19 per hr. Not only is this scary for our troops and their families but to society in general when these kinds of actions are not only allowed but encouraged. So to all our troops out there that if you see vehicles on your posts that say Jacobs on the side start asking questions. Fact they changed out the pipes of 40 base housing units from lead pipes to pvc. Now why is that odd? They are required on that post to pull from 40 Lead and Copper samples from those 40 houses specifically. So in other words they have manipulated those samples to get the results they seek. I contacted the Pentagon with these concerns as being a veteran myself it is personal, they never returned any of my calls or e-mails. So with all sides seemingly to not give one damn about anything but the dollar I can see no way of a better future for any. So the dumbing down of your Treatment Operators has stopped all complaints to all officials as the new operators do not have the skill or knowledge to object to the breaking of regulations. OBJECTIVE COMPLETE!!!!

I contacted the local water treatment facility I received the invoice for the chemicals used he was very skeptical having to use it. It's was from CHINA. I'm sure it's designed to harm us.

This is one complet best documentary. I am sure the documentary staffs took a lot of time and hard work producing this.
This documentary just shows the tip of an Iceberg. The polluted water leaving the terrestrial ecosystem and entered to our sea and oceans, that became beyond mankind's capability. All the problems will go down to the ocean and sea ecosystems. But the problem doesn't stop there. If our polar waters are affected by the poluted water, the freezing point became below -21 celcius. Which means, the polar ice cap will melt rapidly leaving a huge water(part poluted) to engulf and flood our doorsteps.
The point here is poletcians sleeping with corrupt big corporations are killing us. We should unite abs raise 💪💪💪💪💪and oppose them like what happens in the 70s.

When I lived in Brooklyn, I lived about 5 miles from no fewer than 4 superfund sites. I only know of 2 that are currently being cleaned up. I don't know about the others, but they are ALL in bad shape which means the entire neighborhoods are in bad shape. I would like to see this updated for 2022 to see what, if anything has changed in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and in Puget Sound.

I was so happy to see that SOMEONE was taking a hard line trying to save Puget Sound - and then, of course, everyone was fighting him. Such a travesty. It is criminal that companies are allowed to conduct business the way they are, and that no one will take responsibility. If they would sit down and all take responsibility, maybe something could be done. Our government should be forcing this to happen, but it all comes down to greed.

I used to live in a Cul-de sac amongst some prosperous people. They had 2-3 cars parked in their yard, after cutting down all their trees. My yard was the only one with 5 large trees. When my neighbors wanted to play dominos or just under a tree, they used to come to my yard.
My Husband has worked in the Aerospace industry for his entire adult career. From SPAWAR (The Space and Naval Warfare Command) when he was in the Navy (and for many years after he retired, as a Civilian), a couple of others after he left SPAWAR, to his current career with Barnes Aerospace (here in Western Massachusetts.) Truth is, the Aerospace industry is responsible for some of THE MOST toxic chemical pollutants in manufacturing. The regulations and methods have improved GREATLY over the last several decades, but these chemicals are thus far, indispensable in the industry. True that they're some of THE MOST toxic chemicals in manufacturing, but also true that Aerospace machinery (especially airplane/space machinery parts) wouldn't and couldn't be as strong as they are, without the use of these chemicals. They're literally " baked" and painted into the parts and components in the manufacturing process. Also factual that modern society wouldn't work the way it does without some MAJOR changes and breakthroughs in terms of "man made" chemistry and it's role in manufacturing and the usage of things from military & space industry, to everyday, mundane products. (As the narrator said, right down to things like toothpaste, for example.)
The truth of the matter is that without some very SERIOUS changes in the way we do things, this nightmare can't and won't change. True that regulations have helped significantly in recent decades, but also true that while how the usage and disposal of many of these things have seen serious improvement, we ARE STILL utilizing these toxic things AND environmental cleanup of many of these contaminated areas, has STILL not happened on a significant enough level to see any real improvement. MANY of the most serious "Superfund" sites (and almost EVERY place my Husband has ever been employed since his days in the Navy, have been "Superfund" sites) are owned and maintained by the military, the civilian ones are by and large, places that manufacture things for use in the military. Though civilian manufacturing is no less toxic. It's just that military industry is PARTICULARLY bad. We also DESPERATELY need to get our priorities in order. As long as we're doing things like sending BILLIONS of $$ we DON'T HAVE to spare, to places like Ukraine to propagate WAR instead of directing those funds to CLEAN UP the mess the war industry has made (as most of these "Superfund" sites have been labeled thus, and in desperate need of THOROUGH clean up, for DECADES), things will only continue to deteriorate.

As much as I care about the environment and recognize the devastation of environmental exploitation, I can’t help but potentially validate some of the fundage that goes to particular countries during crises- it could be bigger immediate problems if we didn’t perhaps, I don’t know.. but yeah we definitely need to allocate more money to the environment- we’re a mess. The dwindling and degrading of resources is going to worsen future wars unfortunately.

I grew up on Virginia's beaches in the 1970's and 80's. I live in NY but summered with my grandma on Virginia Beach. It was incredible back then. It has been built up ten fold since then.
