    Im sure its good. But the problem is Skylum´s strategy. Instead of making a software stable and good..and make it better with new functions, they come out with a new software, making people buying the new one all the time. And when they start on a new one, the abandon the old one..Happend from Luminar 3 to 4, to AI and now Neo. Brilliant business for them...

    • @LimitedSpectrum
      @LimitedSpectrum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, I really wish they would at least offer a trade-up program, to upgrade your existing license to the new software. I log in to my Skylum account and my library is Photolemur 3 x 5, Aurora 2018 x 5, Aurora 2019 x 5, Luminar 4 x 5, Luminar Ai x 1, Luminar Neo x 1. I'll never touch the old software again, so why hang on to all these obsolete licenses? All my other photo and art applications let me turn my old license in for a new version at a discount.

      I’m trying to decide between luminar and lightroom. As you say, although not called a subscription it seems as though Skylum will have you spending money each year so perhaps it’s not the bargain it seems. Of course you can continue to use outdated software. You also have to buy a separate program for hdr so I’m thinking for me lightroom looks favourite.

    • @LimitedSpectrum
      @LimitedSpectrum 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sshaw37 As long as you get the right version, you can make Luminar last a while. I just do a lot more than what Luminar is capable of, but I still love its features, so I use it as a Photoshop plugin.
      Plenty of people do great on Lightroom alone, but it's not a full featured editor; it's really just a catalog application with raw processing. It is getting more and more features as Adobe updates it, making it a powerful raw editor, but if I had to choose between only Lightroom or Luminar Neo, i would go for Luminar. With the features advertised, it'll be a beast of a program, and you get to skip the monthly fees. As for the longevity of Luminar versions, they are still supported several years out, even if they keep releasing new versions.
      And for HDR, even though I have Aurora, I never find the need to use it. You can still merge bracketed shots in Luminar, and that gets all the detail I need out of my projects.
      Oh, also, if you don't absolutely need everything Neo offers over Ai, Humble Bundle has a sweet deal going for a bundle similar to the one I got Luminar 4 in, which includes Aurora if you need the HDR: www.humblebundle.com/software/photo-editing-to-max-with-luminar-ai-software

      @@LimitedSpectrum EXACTLY! I’m in the same boat. That’s why Skylum’s promotion machine (including affiliates) made the point early on that Neo is NOT an upgrade but a totally new application. Really!?

    • @Gxbbzee
      @Gxbbzee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, with such a bizarre strategy it makes the subscription services they're pointing and laughing at seem like less of a headache. At least I know with Adobe that I only ever have to worry about one version of any piece of software.

    I’m yet another Luminar customer who’s fed up hearing of a great update only to find that I have to buy a ‘brand new’ product rather than get an inclusive upgrade, and thinks their business model is taking the piss and unnecessarily faffy. They probably think they’re industry disrupters, when in fact they’re just alienating existing customers and putting off potential new ones when they check the reviews and hear that this is another annual complete rebuild. Their file management philosophy really doesn’t encourage me to stick with the brand, let alone ‘upgrade’.

    Hi Stewart. I've just discovered your channel and slowly getting back into photography after a couple of years absent from using Lightroom. What would be your personal recommendations for the lowest spec iMAC for when using photo editing software such as NEO? Would an i5 processor with 8GIG RAM be ok or would you stretch to 16GIG? Also would it be better using NEO with Aurora and Topaz as a complete package?

  • @KenRossPhotography
    @KenRossPhotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great preview - thanks! How is the file handling side of NEO compared with previous versions? If we're talking about Luminar [any version] as an alternative to LR, we *must* talk about file/folder management and the end-to-end digital workflow that Luminar seems to still be pretty basic at.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Can't say for sure because the final version isn't out but I suspect it will be similar to AI. Don't get the impression their goal is to replicate a full file management system like Lightroom. I would imagine pro users that rely on Lightroom for their workflow might use the plugin functionality of Luminar with Lightroom so they can dip in and out as required.

    Jumped in with both feet last year and it has been a horrific experience… Have been using - or trying to use better said - the Skylum software on a new beefed up Zephyrus and still CAN’T open some of the RAW pictures I took on a hike with my iPhone!
    Skylum replied that the problem should be resolved in a “future release” and yet two have gone by and the problem persists.

    Great overview Stewart, as someone who has a few Luminar products already I must say that this is both exciting and a little frustrating as I could pretty much do with just two products once this is released (Aurora HDR and Neo).
    I’ve been holding off on pre-ordering but it is looking more and more tempting, particularly the powerlines removal as I do a lot of real estate photography out in the country and often my favourite drone angle of a house is ruined by power lines.
    Here’s one tip I saw in another video that you might like to try out - If you close a function after adjusting it, like say relight AI, and then reopen it again you can add another layer of that same effect and I don’t think there is a limit to how many times you can do this.
    So you could relight foreground to 100%, close and open and then add another relight foreground to 100% and so on.
    Then if you click on history at the top right it’ll open up as layers of history, sort of like the effects column but only with the effects you have used and you can adjust them, hide, move them up of down in the hierarchy or delete them similar to layers, though I don’t think this is the layers function that they are talking about but it looks very interesting and a great way of working with your history. Certainly something that entices me.
    Anyway love your videos. The first video I watched was the DJI Mini 1 review back when your channel was ‘Drone Film Guide’ and it helped convince me to buy one (though by the time I did some weeks later the mini 2 had just been released so I got that instead and love it).

      Thank you for your comment! Great to hear that you're still with us here on the channel since the Mavic Mini came out! Indeed, the ability to use the same effect twice or more is a nice touch and adds more versatility to things. Like you say, it's not the full layer-based functionality they are talking about though. I'm sure we'll do another video at some point once the full version is up and running. Cheers!

    Hello, thanks for this video! I switched to Luminar Neo after watching this, and it's got a few of cool new features, but I've been having some problems with it.
    It takes WAY longer to paste adjustments than Luminar AI did, and because of the way it stacks the adjustments, you can't change one thing and see how it affects the photo overall.
    On top of that the undo button doesn't seem to undo any changes you just made, which sucks if you didn't take note of where you had something before you changed it.
    It also seems to take WAY longer to open a photo at full res for some reason.

    I'm kind of disappointed in Skylum for the way they're doing these new Luminar versions. I preordered Luminar AI, because they told me it was a new engine. Luminar 4 was neat, but it was not optimized for Windows PCs. Hearing about the new engine with better performance, plus the new tools, I was excited to get the new software, even though Luminar AI doesn't have layers. Not even a full year later, they announce Neo, which, again, they said was a new engine built from the ground up, but this time also has layers. If I knew this was in the works, I would have skipped Luminar AI. And I hate that they don't give upgrades from previous versions, only discounts for owners of previous versions. Which means I will own licenses for 2 obsolete versions of software, that will never get used again for the rest of my life. Actually, they did that with Aurora HDR, too, so I actually have 2 more licenses for more obsolete software. It's just so weird that they did it that way, so now all of us Skylum customers just have a list of dead software in our libraries. All my other editing and art applications let you pay a discounted fee to just turn your existing license into the latest version.
    Also, I saw you were testing the responsiveness of Neo with the before/after view, but for me, that has always been really snappy. What is really bad for me in Luminar AI was the individual tool before/after view. It takes soooo long to render, that's it's hard to really tell how much or what has changed. I like to scan my image closely while going back and forth between views of the specific tool I'm using to really see the subtle changes, but when it takes 5-10 seconds for the changes to render, i can't get that mental side-by-side image, you know what I mean?
    Well, I'm hoping Neo really does have performance gains, because as much as I like what Luminar AI does, it runs quite poorly on my PC. There's really no reason my gaming laptop can't handle a photo editor. Intel i9, RTX 2060, 32gb RAM, 1tb SSD + 64gb Intel Optane.
    Well, I guess I'll find out in February! Already preordered last month!

      I noticed that too - the bluish tint on the building disappeared and the Cross was gone but the top of it remained. I think that you can restore it - but what will that do to the power line in the same area? I also noticed that some of the wire supports remained.
      I wonder if they can do this function with a chain link fence.

    As a Capture One user i just got NEO and its slow VS C1 and missing so many things. It has some great features but it is super slow to do a editing job from say a wedding. I can not use it like this. I am on a Mac Mini M1 a very fasy system and i have many different photo and video edit programs and this one NEO is by far the slowest one. Exporting is very very slow taking around 40 to 60 second for each image with only a few thinsg applyed to it. In the video you keep saying how fast it is i guess you never used most every other editing program as they are faster much faster. I edit thousands of images every week from jobs we shoot NEO is just to slow and lacking things that are needed to work well for everyday editing. For editing one image spending a lot of time on it is has great features but for most things i can do all this in C1 much faster.
