    Apple cider is one of our favorites. We don’t make it ourselves, though. We give apples to a cider maker and we get some cider in exchange. 😊

    I love your videos! This year I tried for the first time to make Apple Syrup, by cooking down apples, straining them with a jelly bag overnight, and then cooking the juice down until it became thick. It is fantastic over yogurt, pancakes, and ice cream!!!

    I just made apple butter for the first time - delicious. Canned 7 jars for self and gifts. Will definitely make more and recommend for toast, and alongside cheese and biscuits, or for baking with. Ideal if you have a slow cooker or an AGA.

    Having inherited two apple trees, a plum tree, and countless wild blackberries in the house we bought a few years ago ... there is only so many puddings you can make ... so I decided to make wine from them all. It's cheap, it's pretty easy and delicious. If you drink wine, you'll save a fortune from store bought versions. There is no end to your options too, last year I made a wine from the leftover tomato crop, that was the tastiest wine yet, but they've all been good.

      See the comment re applesauce: "One thing not mentioned in the video is that if you peel the apples as well as core them before juicing, the remaining pulp in the sieve can be turned into applesauce by simply adding a little sugar and a pinch or two of cinnamon to taste." Hope this helps. :-)

    Applesauce! I grew up with a Golden Delicious tree in our backyard. Home made applesauce was a staple in our home served regularly at dinner and is way better than anything you can buy at the store. It freezes well and can be processed in large quantities.

    I love all of your videos! So happy to have found this channel. I’ve been canning apples for years and I think having apple pie filling spiced and ready to pour up into pie crusts to bake is a great time saver and also a fun way to store apples. I’ve added bourbon for a boozy apple dessert for clients, but my favorite is a standard apple pie filling served warm with vanilla ice cream or in crêpes!

    Apple crisp and Apple pie freezes well too. I like to freeze serving sizes so don't have to unthaw the whole dessert.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why, thank you! Traditional apple presses are always the most efficient way of pressing apples to enjoy juice. Some places offer a bring-your-own apples service, where you take along your apples for pressing and they'll give you an equivalent amount of apple juice to take away. But if you've not loads of apples the stewing method works well.

    I didn't know about the lemon juice preventing coloring, thanks for the tip.
    Stored a ton of apples this year, and all the bruised, bad or wormy ones were still good for drying.
    Also I chop up apples and freeze them in portions for apple strudel :)
    Apples are the best :)

    We foraged a few late summer kilos from the tree opposite our home with all the neighbours and made sauces and chutney. It was so satisfying to make them, as it wouldn't have lasted the winter, our cellar is not cold to store long. Will try apple chips next year. But our apples were not that good, some had worms in them.

    Using a solar oven for the drying process is a great way to free up your oven, while saving on energy. Run out of sun for the day? A quality oven allows you to seal foods inside overnight to try again the next day. Scorching food in a solar oven is pretty much impossible as well. I made bread in there, leaving it for a couple hours past completion. Someone also once gave me a peeler with a crank. Push the fruit on, turn the crank, and it will be peeled, or turned into a sliced apple "slinky", or both! Easy to finish making the slices after it's a slinky. Makes it fun for the kids. ;)

    • @GrowVeg

      Love the idea of using a solar oven. No sense in using energy if it's free from the sky.

    Just an add on...
    Yo Alice tour Apples for dehydrating, instead of cutting them with a knife, use your revolving tool, from the beginning of your video, pull away the peeler and slice and core. Take the sliced still round apple and slice vertically thru. You will get perfect slices in no time!

    * All of the apple scraps (except the seeds) can be used to make jelly. Just follow a recipe and replace the amount of apples called for with your scraps.
    * Another use is a natural vinegar. There numerous tutorials on the internet on how to do this.
    * Finally, you can toss the scraps into a bucket and top them off with water. Cover the bucket with a cloth to keep out insects and let it ferment for a week. Strain out the solids for your compost pile and mix the liquid in with your normal watering schedule to feed the micro-fauna in your garden.

    I have pumpkins to keep for Halloween and they've just turned what's the best way to keep them and store them

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pumpkins keep well, so you shouldn't need to worry too much. Harvest them with a lot of stalk then keep them outside to finish fully colouring up. If it's very frost, bring them into a greenhouse or cold frame if you have one. Store them somewhere well ventilated, ideally between 50-60F (10-15C) and away from frost. They'll be fine till Halloween and unused pumpkins may even store like this until early next spring.

  • @dymondwillow2
    @dymondwillow2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If the frost has kissed the apples, can they still be harvested and used?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's a very light frost that merely lightly kissed the apples then they'll probably still be fine to harvest and use. You'll be able to tell right away anyhow. If the apples have gone soft where the frost touched then clearly the flesh inside has been damaged. If they're still firm to the touch then get on and harvest them now before you get a harder frost.

    thanks a lot for sharing, very kind of you and useful indeed.
    Do you have any experience with drying the apples in a conservatory or in the air, instead of the oven?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't personally, but I know you can thread thin apple slices onto a line of cotton thread and then suspend the slices over a heat source to dry - e.g. a radiator or wood burner. Someone here has also suggested using a solar dryer, but you'd need to be somewhere relatively sunny to use this I guess. You could try cutting them as thinly as possible and laying them in the sun in the conservatory. If you do this, I'd recommend first treating the slices in lemon juice so they don't go brown. And check the slices regularly for any signs or deterioration. Really oven or dehydrator is best.

    Cooking damage enzymes and photochemical,peels are healthy fibers probiotics if organic ,harvested from ur own home apple trees.Safe energy by drying in glass rooms or under sun light as dehydrators use a lot of energy.Used dehydrator all time till asked by a young intellegent doctor ,how much energy are you using?that was the end of not using dehydrators for drying mints,apple slices,tomatoes,use sun shine .Thank you .
