Our favorite oatmeal add-ins are DRIED CRANBERRIES (aka "Craisens"), minced ginger root, coconut shreds, freshly grated nutmeg and a drop of sesame oil. We always use rolled oats (not quick oats) Mix in water or milk and zap a couple of minutes in the microwave. After cooking can be topped with fresh berries and a dollop of yogurt. Yummy quick breakfast!
After months of lurking, reading, and learning, my son bought me a small generic dehydrator. He wanted me to try apples for him. Okay, the first load went on the five trays, and he loved them. I put in a second load of five trays for a snack on his flight from Philadelphia to Las Vegas. They didn't make it to the airport. They were gone the day before his flight! Absolutely thrilled to have learned so much from all of you amazing people. Darcy, thank you for everything!
I woke up today thinking that I need to check what I left drying overnight. Next thought: Darcy is soooo nice, taking time to answer questions and share her expertise. You are very much appreciated.
You're such a special lady. So open an honest. Your personality comes across in the channel. I have enjoyed the channel for a year now and I've learned so much from you. Continue blessing to you
Why have I been chopping and breaking up my dehydrated slices for my oatmeal and muffins? Thank you, Darcy. My fingers are very grateful. I ran the apples through my peeler, corer, slicer then the full star chopper on the large dice. Perfect size!!! Also, I once spent an entire day traveling with my leggings on worn side out. So I wore them again the next day right side out #travellight
Ha! This is my 2nd time watching this video and saw your note about your shirt. I went shopping with my shirt inside out, didn’t notice til hours later. It happens. Thanks for the apple drying tips, especially cinnamon apple spice. Never thought about drying the peels.
Enjoyed seeing your peeler in use. I once worked in a lab that did commodities testing. When we had visitors, they would pass by our extremely expensive testing machines to stare in amazement at our row of three Daisy Strippers peeling potatoes. So,so glad to not have to peel by hand.
I laughed at it, until I realized that it had actually done a lot of work for me. And my back didn't hurt when done (which it tends to do if I spend a ton of time hunched over the counter). Win*Win for me!
Being that I'm a newbie at Dehydrating, there a ton of questions/concerns that I have. YOU are by FAR my Go Too person for keeping it "K.I.S.S.". Thank You for sharing your valuable knowledge! ♥♥♥
I dehydrated apple peels a few weeks ago thinking, "I bet Darcy has some ideas for these." I kind of forgot about them so I'm delighted to see this video. I'm going to try the apple cinnamon sugar.
I like that potato peeler. I use my old Pampered Chef apple peeler/corer/slicer. I never know what to do with the peels now that I don’t have a yard/garden. I’m definitely going to make the apple/cinnamon/sugar powder.
I make apple jelly with organic 100% apple juice, sugar, lemon juice and pectin. It is an approved, tested recipe, and it only takes 10 minutes in the water bath canner.
Thanks for this video. The peeler looks really fantastic. I think I could make oatmeal cookies and use the apple shreds and pecans that way. I'm not a fan of oatmeal since scout camp years ago.
I love the apple power that i made last time. Used it to add to my greenbeans when i was cooking that on the stove. Let just say the apple powder didnt last long. I need to make more.
I use lemon juice, home grown. I have a manual peeler corer for our home grown apples. I love to powder dried apples. I can use it in or on almost anything. All our produce on our half acre growing area is organic. Loving our life. ❤🇦🇺
Going to buy your book. My mom had an old dehydrator and my cousin's son's favorite treat was dried apples. However, I am going to try them peeled because my sister found a recipe for apple cider that takes apple peels and other unused apple parts. I am excited to try the carmelized onions and mushrooms when they go on sale.
You are amazing and so real. Learned alot from you. Each time I begin to dehydrate anything I check out your station and always find information I need. Thank you so much for sharing so much for everyone. God bless.
Cosmic Crisp is a traditionally bred, NOT a GMO, variety is really resistant to browning. It takes a little longer to dehydrate because it’s a really, really juicy variety.
I'm so glad that I found you. May I ask if you have to use designated flats with your vacuum sealer or can you use Ball flats. Also, can you use jelly/pickle jars?
You can use any flat lids as long as they are in good condition. Reuse them as often as you'd like for dry storage, too (just not canning). You can use pickle/jelly jars as they are airtight, but they won't work with a vacuum sealer unless you are doing a chamber vac.
I am not, typically, a fan of apples. But I got a couple the other day, saw this video and decided to try it out. I LOVE dehydrated apple slices! I was not expecting that. I could keep on snacking on those… So I have a new mission: dehydrate apples 24/7 during apple season!! Question, though… how long is the shelf life for apple slices that are chewy, but not crispy?
I have watched your video, but am still unsure about getting my apples to the dry, but pliable state. Would you mind talking me through it. Thank you, suzie
Nope - I only have so much budget and space to buy dehydrators to test. It's not high on the list for ones I need to try, though. It looks like it's basically the same as a Cosori, though.
Another super helpful video Darcy! I was wondering if I want to make apple powder, should I dehydrate it then power it, or would it be better if I blend them, dehydrate it, then powder them? Would there be any difference in taste or aroma? I was hoping to speed up the dehydration process 😆😆
Was also wondering about the same thing for the celery powder(I watched your previous video on this and the powder turns out to be awesome). But I was wondering if I blend them first then dehydrate it, would the taste be affected? Since I need to powder them anyway, it would be so cool to see how you go about it!
If your only goal is powder - blending will be faster. I rarely ever make it my only goal because I prefer to store whole for longer storage and want options about how I use it.
since i do low carb i use chayote squash as a substitute for apples. have you ever dried chayote. That would be super cool too dry then be able to use as my apple sub for desserts ❤
Hello, I don’t have air tight containers. I am using zip lock bags and those moisture packs. How long is the shelf live doing it without air tight containers?
Not very long. Ziptop bags are air permeable, meaning they exchange easily. Some things may last months, some things may only last weeks. You're best storing them in better mylar bags or in the fridge/freezer if you want long term storage.
@@ThePurposefulPantry I went to Target and bought a 12 count Ball mason jars, 1 qt, wide mouth. I ordered the mason jar vacuum sealer that you recommended in one of your videos. It is black, electric, and does both wide mouth and small mouth lids. I also ordered the lid opener that you used. This should get me well set up now.
Can you do the same with bananas and make banana sugar for baking? I have a toddler and want to reduce the amount of sugar I'm using in baked goods (although I know that fruit is sugar too). Using honey or maple syrup gets expensive though.
You can, but banana powder is super clumpy because of all of the natural sugars. So be prepared to deal with that. Using not quite ripe bananas will work better, but they won't be as sweet.
@@ThePurposefulPantry thank you for the tip! Are there any other fruits you've used to make as a sugar replacement? I know dates are another common one
Dehydrated food compared to freeze dry food and can I just dehydrate items and put in jar ? what’s the purpose of a freeze dry machine if it gets the same item done for soup mixes etc in a jar.
Much longer shelf life (2-3 years verses 10-20 years depending on product), different (sometimes much better) texture, and the ability to do foods you can't do when dehydrating. Dehydrating isn't bad, just not quite as versatile.
Did you say you dehydrated them for 24 hours? I did my first ever batch of dehydrating anything with apples and sliced them very thin and small and after 20 hours they still have some flexibility to them. I put them in the fridge since I wasnt sure they were dry enough. If they bend should I dehydrate them some more?
Dry everything by the basis of it being dry, not by the time. If you can't easily break the apple slice, it's not done, but be sure not to do it right out of the dehydrator, but give it 5 min or so to cool.
I looked in The Dehydrators Bible, and it said slices should be pliable. Beginners Guide to Dehydrating said 'leathery to crisp.' I trust you most. Do you recommend pliable or crisp? In the video, yours looked a bit crisp, but I wasn't sure.
Pliable means dry but will be a little bendy. If you want to store it, dry dry dry. It's your personal preference about what you prefer for texture - but if you like it softer, store in the fridge. My goal is for storage when I teach .
Clean it off. The food-grade wax isn't harmful in the small doses you get from apples, but if you're concerned, soak them in a sink of warm water with some lemon juice and baking soda and let them soak for awhile, scrub with a brush and rinse.
Be very careful if you have the Cosori 6 tray dehydrator, mine burnt 6 trays of apples and bananas. I always unplug my machine when not in use, as soon as I plugged it in for another batch of apples the machine became extremely hot on the outside and I could smell something burning, I hadn't started dehydrating, just plugged it in. Within minutes the machine completely stopped working Cosori is making me jump through hoops to get a warrenty replacement. The machine is only 6 months old, DO NOT leave these machines plugged in if your not using it.
I'm sorry that was your experience. I've had mine for years and they work almost 24/7 most weeks. As with all appliances, there are sometimes duds. I hope you got a replacement or your money back.
You give it time and you listen to the pitch as it rises and then stabilizes. Your vacuum sealer should have instructions and will tell you what the appropriate amount of time is.
You're in control of what you put in your body. If you don't want the sugar, you leave it out. It's really that easy. No one is forcing you to do anything.

Chia or flaxseeds, raisins, walnuts and cinnamon

Well, I hope that's true! I wore it that way all day and never noticed :D
I bought one of those peelers years ago, and it's excellent for apples and potatoes. It's well worth the 15 or $16 it costs.
