    Last year I went on a ridiculously steep bridge to get furniture. I have never been on a bridge like this before and I have gone through bridges in New York & New Jersey. While I was approaching the steep climb I just felt my car didn't have enough power to properly cross that bridge. It's awful. Btw, I had to go back over the bridge with a couch in order to head back to Orange Park. I don't know how people who live on the other side of the bridge use it during rainy or windy days?! I could never find the name of the bridge but thanks to this video I have. I want to face my fears and try going over it again. Dames Point is a beast.

    Great vid born and raised in Jville I love this city. What most people dont understand is that sky is like that the majority of the time unless its storming. Oh and btw if you noticed while driving down town there are palm trees, yes they are every where. My grandmother had 48 in her property (it wasnt even an acre)

    I was driving to the Jacksonville airport this morning and was pleasantly surprised (no, amazed) by the Danes Pointe Bridge. It was huge and impressive. I saw cruise ships on both sides of the bridge. I didn’t know the name, so now that I’m home, I googled “Florida bridges.” Thanks for the tour of all the bridges.

      Freewayjim it caught me off guard. I was drinking Red Bull trying to stay awake and doing 80 MPH trying to get to the airport. I made a turn and saw this marvel of a bridge and woke up. The height of the bridge is not for the faint of heart. The next time, I’ll anticipate it and have someone recording. Just beautiful!

    I've driven across all of them except for the Dames Point bridge. I always hated the Matthews bridge and was pleasantly surprised when they got rid of the metal grate section of road at the top of it. Getting rid of all of the tolls on all of the bridges in 1989 was the best thing Jax ever did.

    For anyone asking we are a very large city and there is little use in biking because it can take so long to get somewhere also I believe most of these bridges have laws saying you can't walk/bike across them

      The only bridge that I believe has pedestrian path is the Main Street Bridge. Since the entire county of Duval is Jacksonville it is classified as the largest city in the US.

  • @allanrichardson1468
    @allanrichardson1468 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a native and intermittently long time resident, I know the Acosta bridge was known by that name long before 1988. When the Fuller Warren roll bridge was the only bridge connecting to a limited access highway (I-95) at both ends, the Alsop (Main Street) and Acosta bridges, which merged with I-95, US-1 (Phillips Highway), Beach and Atlantic Boulevards on the southern side of the river, and with Main Street downtown and Riverside Avenue on their northern and northwestern ends respectively, were popular toll avoidance routes. The latter earned the nickname Acosta-nothing bridge, because it wasn’t too much out of the way to get back on (or come from) I-95 on the northwestern end.
    The main selling point to the voters in 1988 to drop the tolls was that, in addition to the cost of the toll, the wait to pay the toll caused tremendous backups of traffic, which cost business vehicles much more than the toll itself in lost time and fuel (and the resulting smog from many vehicles waiting in line caused more illness).

    • @hepcat-bob
      @hepcat-bob 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was stationed in Jax from '78 to '84 and I never knew any other name for the Acosta bridge. And getting rid of all the tolls was the best thing Jax has ever done.

    Wow that last bridge was such a beauty. I wonder why its not more famous?

    • @allanrichardson1468
      @allanrichardson1468 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Jacksonville it’s less famous because it carries traffic over a less traveled part of town. When it began construction this part of the county, the area on both sides of the northernmost west-east portion of the river, was expected to grow due to a plan to build portable nuclear power plants on nearby Blount Island and ship them by barge to their intended installation sites. The concept proved a failure, but the bridge was already there, competing with the Mayport Ferry service quite a bit farther east. Eventually, it became part of the eastern half of the I-295 bypass, which now justifies its existence since I-95 northbound traffic has a shorter route around the city to continue northbound than the western half-bypass through the Westside of the county, which passes through areas with much more local traffic.

    I moved to Jax in 1959 and not long before we got there a cruise ship was going up the St. John's River and banged into the Fuller Warren Toll Bridge. My aunt lived four blocks from the river and walked down to see the wreck site. She told me that Dove bar soap (from the ship) was floating all over the river near the toll bridge. Dove I believe is the only soap that floats. I wonder if anyone who reads this is old enough to remember that incident. I was 12 when it happened and am now 70.

    • @kevinkarcher7508
      @kevinkarcher7508 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little to young and not a Jax resident at that time but sounds interesting. That traffic circle from the west to get on theFuller Warren was a nightmare.Did it a few times in 70’s and 80’s. Was surprised by no toll and the new bridge in 2001. Been in Jax since May 2004..Growth in this city has been eye opening since arriving.

    This is another great video Jim, a lot of variety in bridge infrastructures, but not a whole lot of activity, where is the amazing city skyline when you reach the crest of the (Dames pointe Bridge), the only thing I noticed was when you drove north bound(I-295), to the left looked like a shipping yard and to the right some type of small factory. Awesome music selection!

    • @Freewayjim

      Jax does not have a nuclear plant. It is a power generating station that is now decommissioned. The stacks are now gone. Port has expanded but not enough. Still a political football.

      9A became 295 when the construction on the south end complied with Federal regulations. The split on the south end that extends to CR2202 was completed. Actually a better entrance to 95 south then if you took 295 to go south on 95.

    I was driving from Cleveland to Sarasota to visit my parents. I didn’t know this bridge was on my route. It came upon me before I realized what was before me & it was too late to turn back. I have driven over the SF BB and many of America’s craziest bridges. But this one was too much. While going over I literally thought I was going to pass out cold. At the other end I pulled over as soon as I could. My dogs were fine but my heart was pounding and I was soaked in sweat. I chewed out my brother for not warning me.

    Since more people have learned about going over the Dames Point ( Bowtie ) bridge traffic has gotten bad. Back when 9A had traffic lights on it at J Turner Butler Blvd, it was a much better drive. Especially for someone driving a dually with a 16' trailer in tow. Most people didn't know about that route and went the I-295 route to get around Jax on the West side.

    Two new bridges must be added to be feeder rd bridges, with a total of 8 lns! Current bridges be widened to 8 lns! With 95, have an HOV Ln and carpool lns, and be 16 double deck lns, with 8 lower deck local lns and 8 upper deck express lns! Both bridges of 295 too be 16 double deck just like 95! In Central Jacksonville, must be automated and have lns on sides with barriers for power bikes! Automated is computer chips embedded below pavement for vehicles that run on joysticks! Power bikes are bikes that run on gas or electricity!

    Great vid born and raised in Jville I love this city. What most people dont understand is that sky is like that the majority of the time unless its storming. Oh and btw if you noticed while driving down town there are palm trees, yes they are every where. My grandmother had 48 in her property (it wasnt even an acre)
