I took a trip to Savannah with my mom some 15 years ago, and I'll never forget seeing that bridge as I came in from the north on Rt 17. You can actually see the towers before where where the clip starts at 3:57. I was just driving along having no idea of any upcoming bridge and I remember thinking "What the hell IS that?!?" when I first spotted the towers in the distance. I could not figure out what sort of huge and strange-looking structure was so close to the roadway until I had a better view. Then I said to my mom "Whoa! Look at that bridge!" And she replied "Oh no....why did we have to come THIS way?" Yes, my mom hates big bridges.... But I had just never seen a bridge like that before in my life. I remember it vividly because of its weirdness. Here in Maryland and surrounding areas we don't have anything like that, just "traditional" truss, concrete and suspension bridges. But in a few (hopefully short) years we will be getting a cable stayed bridge like the Talmadge Bridge to replace the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Or so they say....then we will have our own weird looking bridge right here in Baltimore. You can come and film a drive over of it.
Thank you for the comment and for watching. That type of bridge is called "Cable Stayed" and there is a small one over the Indian River Inlet in Delaware and on I-295 south of Richmond VA, they are pretty popular in the southern states, the Ravenel Bridge (US-17) in Charleston SC may be the biggest and nicest of them.
Before 1985 516 used to be known as loop 26 Savannah is my home but I was born in Nashville,Tn and lived there til I was 9 on sharondale drive.i remember all of the construction of 440 practically in my backyard going on before we moved in 1973.
@@Freewayjim Really enjoy the drives around Nashville, tn. They brought back memories for my 86 yo mom .she worked in the L&C building in downtown Nashville as a secretary.
So true about I-16. Mostly rural and very boring. Not very scenic. However, you forget all that when it ends in Savannah. I love Savannah. And can't wait to visit it again soon.
I agree. I live in Dublin ( I-16, exits 58 thru 49 ). As many times as I've been to Savannah, their roads are just as rough as Macon. And the scent you pick up the minute you get to Savannah.
I live In Bryan County and I agree it’s pretty boring the only good thing about it is having the Pooler Georgia Exit the rest is basically Trees cell towers and exits that have no gas stations or restaurants except Pembroke if you get off at 280 Statesboro if you get of at SR 67 or US 301 Metter and some other exits
Very nice drive through. I-516 just makes no sense than "Savannah just wants another interstate." But good chilled-back selection of R.E.M. I keep forgetting that there's so many layers to their music.
Thanks, I agree, I think they'd have got along just fine without the I-516 designation. I'm not a huge REM fan, much of the music is quirky IMO but there are some gems there.
Did anyone notice that very non-MUTCD sign advertising Georgia peaches at 1:33? Also with the amount of coin the Georgia Department of Transportation is dropping in the Atlanta metro area, you think they can spare some change to get some new I-516 shields for those gantry signs. Perhaps it's time somebody from the Guerilla Sign Company paid them a visit.
Couldn't agree more..Being a Savannah resident and driving on I-516 almost everyday, it's just harsh to see those old rusted gantries, and old signage. Some signs from the 80s still exist..Every penny's being dropped into Atlanta..All we are getting so far in Savannah are minor repaves, and new guard rails.
Excellent looking video and great rides around Savannah and roads. The music was great too in REM. Athens has some great bands, WSP. Thanx for posting this.
Thanks for the ride. Love that Talmadge Bridge!! My dad said that he listened to R.E.M. a lot in High School (maybe college, too), when I asked him what music he listened to the most when he was my age. However, to my surprise, he doesn't own any R.E.M. CD's (if he does, he never listens to them or told me about them), so basically I hadn't heard much of their music before. I'm sure I've heard a song or two in the past, but this is the first time I've been vividly introduced to R.E.M., so thank you Jim. It is good music for sure.
This lamb took a break from the midnight shift at Dunkin Donuts in wonderful Wellsboro PA, and grazing on boring grass to watch this video. This lamb was not disappointed, and would love to graze on the wonderful vegetation that Savanah offers.
I miss the days as a kid having road trips from ATL to SAV. The state of GA changed the exit numbers somewhere in early 2000 because I remember the I-516 was Exit 34 and the Talmadge Bridge was Exit 36 And its true about how mundane I-16 looks between Macon and Savannah.
I live an hour from Savannah and enjoyed this one, I've been a subscriber for several years and it's neat to see your great work practically in my backyard.
Nice job Jim and for the contra flow direction gates on I-16 they can also be found on I-64 in Williamsburg-Norfolk,VA area since both Savannah,GA and Norfolk,VA on US-17 corridor can be hit by strong storms
Thanks for another great ride, Jim. Loved the R.E.M. soundtrack. And, congratulations on clinching I-516. Not the same as clinching, say I-10, or even I-16 but, congratulations anyway.
I-16 is a pretty boring ride. Once you get a few miles past I-95, and a couple of miles past freeway ends, isnt the Savannah bus station on the right basicly in downtown Savannah? I remember taking a Greyhound to Jacksonville from Atlanta and had to transfer at the Savannah station to finish the route to Jacksonville down 95. I remember seeing a big bridge closeby, now I look at the map I see it was US 17 right on the SC border. For some reason I always thought it was the bridge that went to Tybee. They don't play around on those Greyhound buses. I remember we made a pit stop in Macon at the Macon Greyhound bus station (at the beginning of I-16 I believe), and there were 4 Bibb county police cars waiting. They had drug dogs come in and sniff around all over the bus and arrested some guy for having some pot in a mason jar. 3 deputies dragged him off the bus, I was like damn dude.
As a graduate of UGA, I dig the REM soundtrack. I like how I-16 ties in to the Talmadge Mem. Bridge, but that's about the only interesting thing about that road. The new bridge from SC to the main span looks great too. Maybe things will improve in Macon along I-16 in coming years... I just realized that I-516 is the only interstate I haven't drove in its entirety, I'm missing the mile or two north of I-16. Oh well.
Finally checked it out- very cool bridge! I always did like tall bridges, highway bridges- seeing the various different types there- and thanks for giving me an idea of what Savannah, GA looks like from the freeways- looking forward to seeing the city as I know you will do it justice as you have over the years with many cities around the US!
I'm probably taking a trip down to Saint Simons Island next weekend, and the trip options are a U.S. highway or I-16 to I-95. I might honestly take the first option to avoid the endless purgatory that is I-16.
One of my favorite cities. Thanks for the great footage of the Talmadge Bridge in both directions and for all the END signs. I hope you will come back to Savannah and take in the Veterans Parkway, US 80 east to its end in Tybee Island (bring change for parking!), and the President's Way. Can't wait until Charleston! I-26 is a far cry from I-16.
Between being pressed for time to get to Charleston with enough daylight remaining and the fact that those roads don't really interest me is why they did not get filmed.

Great video! Savannah is definitely a gem of Georgia. Hooray, you survived Devil's Highway (I-16)! Well if anyone wants a taste of Louisiana highways, just go on I-16 or I-516.

Watching these videos and your live streams, I-95 is starting to look like an old, familiar friend (and I haven't driven it since the late '80s!). I guess I *will* be using an REM tune later, too. Driving through there right now! Thought this would be kind of cool

I would not be nervous crossing that bridge and I seen where IH 16 and IH 516 ends
I'm in Orlando right now and so far love the roads in southern US!
if anything they are in excellent condition.
Have to be specific when you say southern because it’s a vast region and states vary drastically. I’m assuming you mean sunbelt states.
Nice vid, Jim. Glad to see that the weather cleared up for you. Thanks for posting.
Thanks, yes, the weather was ideal!
I'd rank both I-16 and I-30 in that list, but it has to be I-30 when going through Arkansas...I hate that drive.
Drove I-30 from LR to Dallas once, yeah it's not very interesting in Arkansas.
Well,it is Arkansas,so how good could it get
I've been waiting on this one! I appreciate the videos! Love to watch you drive!
Thank you very much Christopher!
Like the Bridge Scene and the Bonus Scene and was that music dedicated to the late John Lennon?
The #9 Dream was just a cover of a Lennon solo hit, no dedications that I know of.

What part, I have a little bit of it from Birmingham on an older video, otherwise there isn't much worth filming on I-59.

Add I-22 in Alabama to that boring list.
It's Alabama,not a lot to look at
I-10 in the Florida panhandle is the most boring interstate to drive on lol
Which is why I won't film it :)
Freewayjim lol
For me, it's I-55 through Arkansas and Missouri. I do not miss that drive.
Mostly boring but, at least I-10 in the Panhandle has some decent sized hills and the new Escambia Bay Bridge.
I'm a real bore outside of the city limits of all the major cities I traverse.
man i miss savannah

Why did you leave?
Have you ever driven Route 66?
Parts of it, check out videos 13-53 and 13-55 and much of it was taken over by I-15 and I-40 from CA to OK.

Way too many trees. cut about 3 for every 4 i see
RobRobertTheMusicMan, they have a subtropical climate. Trees reduce the humidity of man made heat conducters, re: roads and buildings.
You sound dumb, we need more trees today with the pollution and population.
That was a boring ride
What do you want for a city that size? if not for the bridge I probably would not even bothered with it.
Oh and yes I-16 easily one of the most boring roads between Macon and Savannah it's dead
Stfu Chris get your thumb out your ass & enjoy the sceneries
You may not be happy to hear this, but Savannah is the second-worst place in Georgia.
Still beats the best place to live in places like North Korea or Syria :)
