Thanks! I used to commute back and forth between San Francisco and Oakland in the 70s. And I remember when it was changed in 1963 to one-way upper and lower decks. Before that it was pretty hazardous on the upper deck with the 2-way traffic! I never saw the lower deck, unless I took a bus, before that. Anyway, I have many memories of those times! Especially of getting a flat tire on the upper deck(: --twice!
Hi, Jim. I have enjoyed your videos over the years. Have created my own channel. Partly inspired by your own. Thanks for the videos. Keep on cruising and rocking.
Wow... talk about a blast from the past! Not only did I forget about how rickety the eastern span looked back then, but also, the skyline of the city has changed so much too, with the addition of many high rise buildings since this was filmed...
WOW, always great to see the sights of the Bay area; something I hope to see in person someday. Really enjoyed this one and glad you were able to do the remix so successfully!
I used to drive here everyday from the South Bay for work.. kind of miss the old bridge. I remember there were always CHP patrols on YB Island because people speed on the bridge alot. Favorite part of the video is reading the old tech ads on the billboards.. Samsung Galaxy Note 3!
Fun fact, if you pause the video at 2:07 you are directly on the part of the bridge that collapsed in the 1989 earthquake. It has a slightly different color from the rest of the road. I’ve lived in the Bay Area my whole life and remember it well. Every time I would cross that section I always thought of that moment in history and watching it on the news.
I drove across that part that collapsed on my way to the game with a friend about 30 minutes before the quake hit. Crazy night that was. After the game was cancelled, headed for the Richmond Bridge to get back to the East Bay through a dark San Francisco that had lost all electricity. With the traffic lights out civilians were directing traffic at all of the intersections.
Strangely enough, I sometimes miss the old span. Good thing that both you and I recorded it for folks to see it on here for many years to come. Great job on this video, using a goodie of a song that I still like.

Excellent video as always. San Francisco/Oakland and the rest of the bay area is probably my favorite place in the world. Your videos here always bring a smile to my face and great choices in music
I have to agree the Bay Bridge is a great ride. The four towers is obviously a unique feature compared to most bridges. Cool to finally see what it looks like on route. Great approach to SF.
I'm extremely happy and grateful that you have video of the Eastern span of the Bay Bridge uploaded on the internet. I'm obsessed with archiving and this is great. Someone has actually uploaded a dashcam video from 1989 of the Cypress Street Viaduct that was destroyed merely weeks later during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. I actually remember the quake, I was 3 lol. I like the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge but I still miss the old one, it looked like an erector set lol. Thanks for doing this.
Your music choice continues to amaze me. How else are we going to learn about other fantastic artists globally is we don’t dip our toe into the curiosity pond of music? Thank you for your mission to bring our wonderful country a little bit close to enjoy by way of video!

Fantastic as always! Right at the beginning, I've been through there several times and always love seeing the huge Pacific Park Condos on the left at 0:39. After a long cross-country trip, that bldg. is the signal that the MacArthur Maze is next and then the bridges. And the new east spans are beautiful but this original older one has a true cool factor to it and I do miss it. (Now we need you to time travel back 31 years and get Embarcadero Fwy.) Awesome job with the music and editing... and everything!
You & I definitely have two things in common. We love to drive & we love music. Whether it's jazz, (I recommended Paul Hardcastle to you) or Euro Pop (or E D M) it's called alot of things these days. I've actually tooled around San Francisco playing that Milky trak. And thanks for introducing me to that Moony trak. That was slamm'in and I just ran over to spotify & added it to my collection. Yep, the Bay is really cool & I love it! The Bay Bridge is one of my favorites but the Golden Gate Bridge is the best. I always said the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge in my hometown of New York was New York's answer to the Golden Gate Bridge. And that sunset drive headed back was amazing. I love driving with beautiful sunsets. There's just something about them. So keep those vids coming & I can't wait to hear what soundtrak you got with them next. Next time you're in San Francisco how'bout driving down Lombard Street (crookedest street in the world section) playing "Dizzy" by Tommy Roe I believe? That would be fun. Lol.
I like Paul Hardcastle, he'll make an appearance in the Season Finale Video 20-20 on October 5th :). Thank you for watching and the comment, glad you enjoyed it!
When my Wife gets home from work tonight, I'll show her this video. It just might convince her that we really need to extend our trip next Summer (we're going back to Idaho) to include Nor Cal. This'll do the trick!
Beautiful soundtrack with the video. You sure got a really good taste of music, personally. The new bridge that opened almost 7 years ago is one of the most beautiful bridges in the US in my opinion. The Bay Area is a beautiful place indeed.
Exceptionally well done video, Jim. As a ride-along video aficionado (I dont make them; just view them 😎) this is one of the best Ive ever seen. IMO - lighting, music choice, time of day, and overall “place” were absolutely spot on.
Nice ride- I always found Oakland/San Francisco to be an interesting area but when I was in California 30 years ago I did not get the chance to go north but I love seeing the videos of it- especially seeing the old Bay Bridge before the new one was up- and I like both of them- I also love seeing San Francisco in general- and Oakland is an interesting area too. Nice ride- great soundtrack too and also great commentary as always! Little behind on my viewing of videos but sometimes- a double-feature of FreewayJim videos is a great thing!
San Francisco has a foreign vibe in my opinion. European in some ways, then Japanese with all the homes stacked on top of each other in some areas. It's certainly unlike other areas of California.
True. It has also the hilly feature, seen nowhere else in the country. San Francisco and Miami are the most distinctive cities in the US (Miami being its Spanish language as the primary language and Latin American vibe)
Enjoyed the remix preserving history of the original Cantilever span of the Bay Bridge! While I have been across the cantilever numerous times, I only got to drive it once, and that was going Eastbound. I do enjoy driving the new span and the entire bridge whenever I visit the Bay, so long as traffic is flowing. I still enjoy the original version of this video, being your first time in the Bay and your take on the bridge, especially with Joe Satriani’s “A Train of Angels.” However, the Moony song really makes this one dynamite.
Super Shuttle! One of those weird things where I didn't even realize they were gone until you mentioned it. I miss the Coca Cola sign. It was like it said hello/goodbye when you entered/left the city.

By the way that curve is referred to as Hospital curve in traffic reports, etc. as you are right near SF general hospital. The tight curve and smaller lanes means many accidents happen there that clog up traffic. The elevated portion of 80 through SF is called the 80 skyway. The 80-580-880 interchange is called the MacArthur Maze and the section of 80/580 north of the maze toward Berkeley is called the East Shore Freeway

I have never heard of the two music artists , but now I 'm a fan. You're like a skilled dj finding the right track (vibe,BPM) and mixing them seamlessly with the video. As I've said before no one does "Ride Along" like Freewayjim. great job, love it. Do you know about Deep House Music ? Some but not all is really ideal for the videos.

I've heard the term Deep House and may have a couple songs in my library that qualify as such and yes, in some cases, it would work well. in a video. I'm not so much opposed to it, I just feel like I have better options when I go through the process of choosing songs for a video.....a lot of factors come in to play, length, tempo, vibe, where the breaks in the song are, how does it "play" with the footage, it's an inexact science and I mostly go on "feel". Hello Freewayjim & Family & All TH-camrs hope You All having Nice Labor Day and weekend/week And Thank You for These Fantastic Traveling Videos and Great Music ☺
The very first time I came here (and for now my only time so far) it was night. Seeing the city skyline at night in my very first time in the west of the country it was a very different feeling. The city lights looked wonderful. We drove from NYC, via parts of I-80 and I-70 (we wanted to go through Colorado).
So cool. Unfortunately didn’t have my license at the time so I was unable to experience the drive for myself but rode over it plenty of times with my parents.
In "The Graduate", when Dustin Hoffman's character drove from San Francisco to Berkeley, they shut the freeway down so the car could use the top deck, as the eastbound direction was the 'less scenic' lower deck.
What's your setup for filming on the road? I'm getting ready to move to Hawai'i and am going to drive across America one more time. I want to document all the places I go through
Those signs at the I-580/CA-24 were pretty old, with the “I-980 to I-880” patches dating to the reconstruction of I-880 around West Oakland after the 1989 earthquake, and the empty spot on the I-580 sign dating to when US-50 extended from Sacramento all the way to San Francisco via Stockton, it’s a shame that all the button copy along that stretch of I-580 have long been replaced
another note to add to your note about the Milky song: they also got a "slamdown" by the Australian group the Go-Betweens, who did the song "Streets of Your Town" from which the memorable acoustic guitar riff is from. Milky sampled it without permission. Naughty peeps. :-D PS: it struck me as funny, how the first song was by Milky, and the second by Moony. LOL
I drive that bridge everyday. Just get across it before the inevitable car breakdown, accident, jumper, shooting, chase, Cal-Trans lane closure, big rig stuck at the eastbound entrance to Treasure Island, crap that fell off a vehicle, etc.
No, those were taken down shortly after they were damaged in that earthquake, from what I gather local leaders were just looking for a reason to take them down.
Just a truly AWESOME video Jim! The music was ideal and your GIFT for putting these together is special! The sunset was icing on the cake! Just curious Jim....there are always 2 "Token" dislikes........ex-wives?...taunting the neighbor's kids?........( Or just plain lunatics?)...just kidding, thank you for a great video!
Pretty sure i will never make it to Frisco, but its interesting to me I-80 ends there, and i live just a couple miles from I-80 in Iowa, and travel it often East and West , daily :)
@@SlowedByCinnamxn In all honestly, ultimately coming from and back to Atlanta on these trips means my travels simply don't take me to or through Iowa often if at all, I'd have to go out of my way (which I have done for some interesting things) to do that and IMO there isn't much if anything worth going out of my way for in Iowa. That said, in 2013, I went out of my way heading west as I planned to film Council Bluffs & Omaha but got rained out, which added over 100 miles to my day as a result. I do what I can.
Video Suggestion: Can you do a remix of I 70 West ik it’s a little ambitious but you don’t have to use my suggestion or Can you do a video of Birmingham Alabama
I'll pass on that one for now, maybe someday, I have videos of Birmingham but I hope to get some new footage next chance I get to go there, don't know when that will be though.
It's the SF Bay Bridge as A WHOLE (that means all of it, from shore to shore and YB island) as I said in the video, the old span was NOT my favorite,, but the complex all together with the approaches is, I like it even better with the new span.
I miss the gentler gradients (1.3% vs 2% on the new bridge) on the cantilever section of the old Bay Bridge East Span. It comes as no surprise though as the old bridge was designed for trains whereas the new one was not. However, I don't get why they made the grade on the deck truss section, where a portion collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, steeper at 2.74%. Does anyone have an explanation? www.flickr.com/photos/walkingsf/4235066245
I am unfortunate enough to live in the Bay Area. I can assure you that very seldomly is traffic like this. Normally it's at a standstill everywhere. You obviously hit the bridges on a very good day.
But when I went on September 2018 it was a weekend and I didn’t see much traffic. We even took the BART just in case to avoid traffic but when we went to the city, places like the Painted Ladies, Lombard St, Embarcadero, Castro, Chinatown... not much traffic at all. We even went back to take the car back to the city.
Too bad you could not have ever driven the 480, the old Embarcadero Fwy. It was the best mile and a quarter of driving, on a completely double decker fwy. I know, I know, from the old fwy revolt guys, it was "ugly" and a "scar." But, darnaroonies, I loved that highway. The 280 just doesn't cut it east of the 101 to Caesar Chavez. And, you know the old 880 before the quake, that was a great highway, other than it collapsed. There is a five part special on building the first double decker fwy in SF. This is part 1 of 5, enjoy. You'll find the other parts. th-cam.com/video/lMnXZiw3hJk/w-d-xo.html
@@Freewayjim Note that the designers were concerned about aesthetics. They wanted to build a beautiful structure. I need to write a book, man, explaining the positives of urban freeways. Note the philosophy: the separation of traffic, and to return the local traffic to local needs, while channeling the other traffic to the highway.
The Nostalgia of that old bridge!

Nice work on the video. As cool as the new Bay bridge is, the old span still had some charm in my opinion.
Thanks and I would agree with that.
Gone...along with the Raiders now. 🙁
True, it did had some nice charm but the new bridge had some more taste of charming.
Nice song choices, Jim! Do you know any Nadia Ali songs? I know Kaskade is one that you know in some of your videos. One of my favorite Nadia Ali songs is Is It Love? and also Fine Print, the Tydi Remix.
Thank you, I've heard of her but don't have any in my music library.
@@Freewayjim You mean Nadia Ali?
@@FreewayGuilly Yes, "her".
Hello Freewayjim & Family & All TH-camrs hope You All having Nice Labor Day and weekend/week And Thank You for These Fantastic Traveling Videos and Great Music ☺
Thank you for watching and the comment!
The second tune is great, one of my favourite europop songs :)
Thanks, I've come to like it a lot too, love those chunky piano chords.
The very first time I came here (and for now my only time so far) it was night. Seeing the city skyline at night in my very first time in the west of the country it was a very different feeling. The city lights looked wonderful. We drove from NYC, via parts of I-80 and I-70 (we wanted to go through Colorado).
The west is definitely different and you did the right thing taking 70 through Colorado, a spectacular stretch of road.
aye just crossed today .. #510 East Oakland yeeee
So cool. Unfortunately didn’t have my license at the time so I was unable to experience the drive for myself but rode over it plenty of times with my parents.
At least you can drive over the new one, which is spectacular!
We miss you Jim!!!
Thanks :)
The old bridge 🥺🥺🥺💙
Grat video Bro keep up the good work and im pat Itlaleen to
Thank you!
Happy Labor Day
Happy Labor Day to you!
In "The Graduate", when Dustin Hoffman's character drove from San Francisco to Berkeley, they shut the freeway down so the car could use the top deck, as the eastbound direction was the 'less scenic' lower deck.
Did not know that, nor have I seen the movie, will look for that if I get to see it, great factoid.
What's your setup for filming on the road? I'm getting ready to move to Hawai'i and am going to drive across America one more time. I want to document all the places I go through
I explain it in this video at 3:01. th-cam.com/video/giPF3ENOTxA/w-d-xo.html
Thank you, beautiful vidio, my hard is in the San Francisco.🇺🇸🎆🏅🥇
Thank you!
They certainly do look old.
another note to add to your note about the Milky song: they also got a "slamdown" by the Australian group the Go-Betweens, who did the song "Streets of Your Town" from which the memorable acoustic guitar riff is from. Milky sampled it without permission. Naughty peeps. :-D PS: it struck me as funny, how the first song was by Milky, and the second by Moony. LOL
LOL, it just worked out that way...I may have mentioned they were both Italian outfits in the commentary.
@@Freewayjim Yep. you did. A fact I already knew. Apparently Italians like white stuff! LOL :-D
I drive that bridge everyday. Just get across it before the inevitable car breakdown, accident, jumper, shooting, chase, Cal-Trans lane closure, big rig stuck at the eastbound entrance to Treasure Island, crap that fell off a vehicle, etc.
It’s good! It’s better than the traffic jams on that way of course! 😉👍✌️
The upper and lower two-tiered bridge is cool!
Japanese(上下2段の橋、カッコイイ!)
They still have those double-decker bridges, even after the World Series quake back in '89?
No, those were taken down shortly after they were damaged in that earthquake, from what I gather local leaders were just looking for a reason to take them down.
Just a truly AWESOME video Jim! The music was ideal and your GIFT for putting these together is special! The sunset was icing on the cake! Just curious Jim....there are always 2 "Token" dislikes........ex-wives?...taunting the neighbor's kids?........( Or just plain lunatics?)...just kidding, thank you for a great video!
LOL! I've sometimes wondered about that. Thank you for the thoughtful comment, I'm glad you enjoy the videos.
Pretty sure i will never make it to Frisco, but its interesting to me I-80 ends there, and i live just a couple miles from I-80 in Iowa, and travel it often East and West , daily :)
+FreewayJim are you gonna make a Video about Iowa anytime soon?
Nope
+Freewayjim, This is like my First comment L M A O. Isn’t it because there’s nothing to do there.
@Freewayjim Oh Ok. Are you Going on a Trip at all, anytime Soon? Just Curious
San Francisco Bay area does have great bridges and some controlled access highways.
Freewayjim ok
What's your current favorite bridge now that this one is gone?
It's the SF Bay Bridge as A WHOLE (that means all of it, from shore to shore and YB island) as I said in the video, the old span was NOT my favorite,, but the complex all together with the approaches is, I like it even better with the new span.
When you think at the start it's morning but it's actually sunset when you keep watching
What camera do you film with?
My gear is listed in the closing credits after the ride ends, or here at 2:01. th-cam.com/video/giPF3ENOTxA/w-d-xo.html
@@Freewayjim Thanks!
I believe that the original version of the first song was used in 2009 or 2010 in Connecticut
You are correct!
also used on FreewayBrent's popular Hollywood Freeway video.
@@EphemeralProductions Yep.
Back when we had clear skies, eh?
Nice
Thanks
Your Welcome
you can tell this videos old because you can actually see the sky #rip ol bay bridge
Is it just me or is the ending commentary audio super low?
It is, I got a new mic a few weeks later.
Yes ❤🎉
I like how you said that you can't keep up with the new age charts.
So nice to see the skyline without the salesforce tower ^_^
I miss the gentler gradients (1.3% vs 2% on the new bridge) on the cantilever section of the old Bay Bridge East Span. It comes as no surprise though as the old bridge was designed for trains whereas the new one was not.
However, I don't get why they made the grade on the deck truss section, where a portion collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, steeper at 2.74%. Does anyone have an explanation?

Now San Francisco is filled with a orange and red sky
I am unfortunate enough to live in the Bay Area. I can assure you that very seldomly is traffic like this. Normally it's at a standstill everywhere. You obviously hit the bridges on a very good day.
Sometimes I get lucky, thanks.
I've seen that and yes I really do wish I could have driven those freeways back in their glory days.
Cool
Monica Bragato rocks!!....
The old eastern span bridge is very narrow!!
Not as narrow or high up as the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge just a few miles north
