The photo of George, Edward, Victoria, and baby Edward/David has always sort of blown my mind - there's a woman born in the reign of George III, holding a child who will live to see men walk on the Moon.
I am so looking forward to you continuing with Queen Victoria's great grandchildren series. The line about Wallis Simpson scolding Edward for not eating his vegetables will never not make me crack up. It is so funny and honestly kinda kinky lol
Both Edward and George married very strong women. It was George’s wife Elizabeth who denied Wallis an HRH. She hated Wallis for destroying her quiet life and blamed her for the death of her husband. At the beginning of WWII, the Duke of Windsor was given Army duties which both amused and annoyed the professionals. He wasn’t given a lot of info because they doubted his loyalty. At the first sign of trouble Edward fled. He only came back when Churchill threatened to try him for treason and desertion. That was one of the many reasons he was sent to the Bahamas. After the war and the discovery of the Marburg Papers he was effectively banned from England.
Leslee, that is incorrect and sounds like historical fiction that has sadly become part what people believe to be true. The women did not care for each other, but there are multiple reasons Wallis did not even qualify as an HRH. They were not the Duke and Duchess of any place that exists, unless we are saying that they were the Duke and Duchess of Windsor Castle.
Ah I see you watched 'The Crown', I like the show, but do keep in mind that is dramatised and not everything in the show is historically accurate. After the Marburg Papers are released, it did cause some controversy, but the Duke of Windsor still has connections to the royal family and kept up with public appearances. Unlike the show which he got banished from the family and England, but his reputation is definitely in shambles though.
The Queen Mother hated Wallis. It was a hate she carried all her life. She blamed Wallis for George's early death...even though he died of lung cancer after smoking 100 cigarettes a day since he was a teenager.
@Rexon The Crown is not the first miniseries nor the first historiography to explore their relationship nor their relationship with the Windsor family. There are tons of books, movies, and miniseries about them. I read alot. Whatever they are, you can’t say they are not a fascinating pair. They deserved each other. And I mean that in every way possible. Also, and I am dating myself, I remember when both Edward and Wallis died. @MellisaPollum, I found that out in the 80s. They were part of the scandal surrounding Sir Harry Oakes death in the 40s. There was a miniseries about that in the 80s. When the going got tough The Duke and Duchess would flee They were a pair of cowards.
I wouldn't use the words "morbidly obsessed" in regard to Queen Victoria's reaction to her husband Albert's death. In an era when most royal and aristocratic marriages were socially/monetary/business arrangements, Victoria was lucky enough to marry her soul mate; her best friend. Naturally, she was devastated and felt utterly lost without him.
Tbf, being named after your grandpa (great grandpa?) because your grandma was devastated/angry you were born on his 34th death anniversary _does_ sound pretty crazy.
Uhhh Victoria was still a lot. Like obviously you never just stop missing someone you care about, but she absolutely took it too far. It's also just never appropriate to push those expectations onto children
Also that Queen Mary, Princess Mary, Prince Henry & Prince George helped King George VI immensely because of many issues he said (primarily his stammer and fear of the public), and I feel like that’s what probably endeared him to the people, they felt like the King was someone they could all relate to, and his finest hour was WW2 !! He’s one of the greatest King’s ever
This was in an age where divorce was seen as a terrible thing. That marrying someone who wasn’t of the correct religious background was not allowed in the royal family. But also he didn’t wish to be king. Neither did his younger brother. But George stepped up unlike Edward. Edward just wanted his own way. Sadly if your in the Royal family you can’t have your own way!
Unfortunately that's how it works. As little girls we all may have romanticed the idea of being a princess and living in a castle but the reality was that they often had to give up on many personal freedoms.
The Royals are still to this day forbidden becoming a catholic and other religions as well. No sitting monarch can be a catholic as they are the head of the Church of England.

A bit surprised David (Edward VIII) was allowed to carry on his playboy lifestyle with married socialites for so long. In previous royal generations, as a heir to the throne he would have been forced to settle down and marry a suitable foreign protestant princess. @@gailmckerrow1450 you could say that about many things that are still around, it all depends on your opinion for example: I like the monarchy as it gives us a proud tradition, they bring in tourism and money, they pay more in taxes than anyone else even though they don't have too and with each new generation they change with the times and modernize plus the last time we abolished the monarchy it didn't go well
@@gailmckerrow1450 But think about what would’ve happened if England had sided with Germany in the Second World War. ... Again.
Fascinating how two brothers, raised by the same people can be so different with their racial beliefs.
Well, maybe they had different nannies lol
@@Taniajofre nah they had the same nannies. But they're probably influenced by their friends or different politicians.
(And also their personalities were different. George didn't follow the orders to be racist but Edward did and therefore turned like one over the years)
@@Taniajofre They aren't that far apart in age--actually they had the same nannies growing up; first was a terror of a woman who abused the two of them. She got reported by one of the junior nannies, Charlotte Bill, who was promoted to head nanny and took care of all six of the royal children, especially Prince John.
My dad, 2 uncles, & aunt, turned out VERY different. Most clearly with my dad and the next eldest uncle - since they were adopted they're basically the same age (within a year). My dad got through to an aerospsce PhD, my uncle ended up a drug addict who we lost track of during his freefall when i was 6. The contrast is so weirdly different. I still haven't made sense of that, but it's almost comforting to see it happen to other people too. Something about human nature deep down, i guess...?

@@PrincessQ-fj9ly we would probably still have had Queen Elizabeth II.
King George VI was SO dashing! He really looks like a true king!
Churchill also had Roosevelt keep tabs on he and Wallis. FDR didn't trust either Edward or Wallis as far as he could throw them.
@Rexon
The Crown is not the first miniseries nor the first historiography to explore their relationship nor their relationship with the Windsor family.
When the going got tough
The Duke and Duchess would flee
They were a pair of cowards.

George VI was a great King. The Queen Mother was a good Consort. Their partnership strengthened their people during the war.
He was also very good looking!

The fact that King George VI was seen as weak and incapable of being King, and even Republicans said “the abdication crisis of 1936 did "more for republicanism than fifty years of propaganda". George VI wrote to his brother Edward that in the aftermath of the abdication he had reluctantly assumed "a rocking throne" and tried "to make it steady again". He became king at a point when public faith in the monarchy was at a low ebb. During his reign, his people endured the hardships of war, and imperial power was eroded. However, as a dutiful family man and by showing personal courage, he succeeded in restoring the popularity of the monarchy.” Sheesh finally King George VI is getting his credit
But I think in the end .. everyone knew that Bertie was the right man for the job since he and Edward were adults

I can't believe the Queen actually took advice from her free-wheeling uncle about whether or not to let Margaret marry the man she loved. Assuming that was true, it's as if Uncle David wanted to make the family suffer the way he'd suffered. But most people agree that the abdictation was a blessing. If only George VI hadn't smoked. He might have lived another twenty years or so and the princess Elizabeth would have had a chance to be a normal mother to her children. Though they might have been weird anyway with all that intermarrying. Edward is the only one who can seem to stay out of trouble and of the four, he had the most freedom to be his own person growing up.
The Queen and her family didn't have contact with David after he abdicated.
@@pluffer241 No contact or no "official" contact? I also wonder if it's true or not that Churchill advised her to always "be the Queen" in public and to always keep her emotions in check. A bit surprised David (Edward VIII) was allowed to carry on his playboy lifestyle with married socialites for so long. In previous royal generations, as a heir to the throne he would have been forced to settle down and marry a suitable foreign protestant princess. German princesses were no longer considered at the end of WW1 but Princess Ingrid of Sweden (later Queen of Denmark) was eligible being a protestant and Princess from a Royal family with a British Princess as her mother (Crown Princess Magaret of Sweden /Princess Margaret of Connaught) . Were they never matched as she and David (Edward VIII) were close in age? I suppose David's parents George V and Mary of Teck already knew their wayward son wouldn't amount to anything and had 3 other princes as spares to the heir.
Question… Wasn’t the Church of England created specifically so a king could divorce? Why would they forbid it later?
Future monarch's after Henry 8 prob forbid it
Hypocrisy of Monarchy - Henry didn't marry a divorcee. Do as I say, not as I do
Henry wanted the marriage annulled, said his marriage to Katherine of Aragon was invalid. Pope refused this so Henry broke with Rome and had himself made head of church in England. So annulled rather than divorced
