I'd love to see that Hal Jordan cross with a newbie golly shucks Superman. He's a Hal Jordan that I could actually see as best buddies with Oliver Queen, who by contrast would have to be even more roguish and Han Solo-y.
He seems to do just enough research to know to bring it up as an appropriate issue being discussed among the community but doesn't overstep or speak as if to represent that part of the community... which I think is the sweetspot as a content creator, especially a white cis male, for hitting on these kinda topics on a channel that doesn't specifically focus on the politics.
As a Black man, in regards to the potential John Stewart casting, I do recognize and understand that Aaron Pierre is lighter skinned and does not really look like a traditional John Stewart BUT… if he so happens to be the best fit across the board, then I’m fine with the decision. I’d rather a great actor that kind of looks like the characters represent them than a decent actor that completely looks like the accurate portrayal
Here's the weird thing about John Stewart, Niel Adams, the creator of the character purposefully asked the colourist to make him lighter, now his description on the type of brown is a tad bit insensitive, but initially John Stewart was not coloured a darker shade but I agree the best audition should win out
Also, I can hope we can totally dodge dividing Black actors over how black their skin is? The darkness of a character's skin only matters if it matters, and although I remember Luke Cage stories where it was a factor, but I cannot remember a single story where it mattered that John Stewart was black.
@@lamzy4683 I don't know about that, there are clips of Neal Adams speaking about the creation of the character, I think it's on a DC documentary or something I don't remember where I saw it
On the colourism thing, it's inverted for both genders . They cast darker for men, lighter for women . An example of this staying on the topic of Superhero films, Idris Elba & the contrast of the actress playing his daughter in The Suicide Squad
Def. True. The wife is light skinned or biracial. It's sad that we have to look at things that way but the consistency becomes a trend when it has been going on for years. It wasn't like that early on then when we became mainstream they cleansed the pallet so to speak. It's getting better, I just hope it's not looked at where now it's inverse. Ideally there would be no typecast. Where if you cast a black person it isn't seen as colorism
Actually, that depends on the genre of fiction. If it's a romance or the black male character is expected to have a romantic partner (especially if interracial) then they often cast a lighter skin male. But if the black male character isn't being sexualized then they cast dark, like for most "black best friend" tropes. But if it's a non-interracial black couple then yea the women are typically lighter (unless they are the main character).
Hey nando, I just want to say that I genuinely appreciate that you never hesitate to speak on genuine issues like racism and colorism in Hollywood, and also that you state you aren't the best voice to speak on it. You're education on social issues and kindness towards minority groups is really the thing that keeps me coming back.
The thing is, I could totally see Olyphant’s Hal bouncing and crashing with Nathan Fillio’’s Guy Gardner the most just like the comics, the other two, not so much.
Glad you brought up and highlighted people's concerns with the potential John Stewart casting. Just want to clarify something regarding Henry Zaga as Sunspot. His casting goes beyond just colorism and is outright whitewashing. It would be colorism if he was black but lightskinned, but he's neither black nor darkskinned like Roberto is supposed to be
Yeah, it's sort of like with Miles and the point of finding a specifically afro-latino actor, but in the opposite direction. That mixed heritage is specifically important for these characters, and should be given attention.
I get it, I wanted a more accurate Sunspot as well but I didn't go that hard about it cause at least it was a Brasilian actor. Like, if he could have been black and just American I feel like it's still not right either... I'd still defer to the best actor for the role if it could only be between a white Brasilian or a black American, although I guess I'd lean slightly towards the black American since his skin color is such an aspect of his personality and even more so how it fuels his arrogance when his powers activate and he becomes even blacker and stronger
Not that well read with Sunspot, so I did a google search to see some comic panels and honestly, I can't see much consistency with his skin tone. Artist/Studio Mnadate dependent, I suppose. Sure looks generally darker than Zaga, but he's not from outside the range that Roberto seems to have been drawn. I really don't see the appeal to giving a melanin test to actors. Is it not enough that some actors are the wrong ethnicity, that now they must "Be this dark to be cast"? Aaron Pierre appeals to me more than Idris not because of his skin tone but that he can draw on that strong, stoic characteristic than John Stewart has.

Im glad Josh Brolin turned down playing Hal Jordan, even though he's a great actor, but him as Hal Jordan just doesn't feel right. Im slightly nervous about them casting actors in their mid '40s-'50s for Hal in the DCU because it makes me think Hal won't be around for long in the DCU, and that kinda sucks since he has some of the best GL comic storylines to adapt especially the Geoff Johns GL comics, but Im willing to give this a chance since Im a big Green Lantern fan and Im excited to see the character given a second chance for audiences to experience. I also hope they don't adapt the Parallax Hal storyline in the DCU too soon because the only reason that storyline worked was that they built up to it by developing Hal's journey as a GL and his tragic downfall, not to mention his romance with Carol Ferris and his iconic rivalry with Sinestro, who is a villain I really hope they don't forget about since he's the most iconic GL villains and his history with Hal Jordan and their juxtaposed personality makes them such great rivals that Id be really disappointed if they didn't choose to include him the long term of the DCU, especially with how much of a quintessential character he is for the Green Lantern lore in general. Out of all the picks, I hope Chris Pine plays Hal in the DCU, despite his time as Steve Trevor in the DCEU. If this show is successful enough, then I can see them making an entire sci-fi saga of GL films, and that's something Ive even pitched and written down, so Im hoping the show is good. on the topic of colorism, I always found it strange that when it came time to cast America Chavez in live action, a character who in the comics has always been portrayed as a darker skinned latina and who is also specifically made to be a representative of the Latin American community as a whole, they casted a lighter skinned Latina when colorism is such a pervasive issue in the Latino community (context, despite my pfp I am a young latin man)

After Honor Among Thieves, I really want to see Chris Pine as an A-list leading man. His charisma sold the heck out of that film. That being said, between Kirk and Steve Trevor, I don't think being a Green Lantern would be interesting for him. I do hope he has a spot in this new universe, though. He might be amazing as, like, The Question or maybe even just Green Arrow.
Chris Pine has been playing young hal a large swath of his career so if they wanted an older mature Hal they really could've just used Fillion before he got cast as the green bowlcut. That said I'm down for pine or oliphant
Hollywood has a habit of being too cowardly to use dark-skinned black actors because they think it’ll kill the property. Fortunately Kevin Feige has had the bollocks to cast dark-skinned actors and I’m hoping that James Gunn does the same because ain’t no one got time for that. Also no please no Chris Pine, he always plays a version of the same character.
Controlled, tough, smart is definitely what you get from Damson Idris from snowfall. If that's what we get, but from the other side of the law, it would make a very interesting and exciting Jon Stewart

Aaron Pierre was also in Krypton. He played a very stoic by the books soldier which he could a good contrast to Hal Jordan’s more freestyle personality. Except for the stoic by the by the books bit
If Chris Pine did it, I think he'd play it more along the lines of his character in "Hell or High Water". He played the older brother who guided his younger one into a series of bank robberies to say their farm. He is gritty, smart, determined!!
i am praying for Timothy Olyphant for Hal Jordan. rumors say Chris Pine was number 2 and to be honest he’ll probably accept, but Olyphant would be so good
Thoughts on Seann William Scott as Booster Gold? I know there’s a lot of talk about Kumail but, after Obi Wan and Ghostbusters, him playing a con man who turns out to be the hero is getting old.
After watching Rebel Ridge, I NEED Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. He even has the green eyes that they can bump the contrast up on . He was so believable and no-nonsense that it screamed John Stewart.
Olyphant is really the only choice here. He's really good at playing the likeable or reformed a-hole. Hal really needs to be played by someone who can excuse confidence, arrogance, but also a great sense of duty. That rare combination is Olyphant all the way. I like it when Hal Jordan is played as the slightly out of touch but just barely hip enough to be still awesome and threatening when he needs to be.
I should start creating cbm content to rep the blerds lol but my picks for John Stewart were always Trevante Rhodes, Y'Lan Noel, Damson Idris, and only recently Aaron Pierre. Oh fun fact about Storm, originally Angela Bassett was the one who was approached to play Storm but she turned it down, and Janet Jackson was also in the running at one point.
But also shout out to Nando for touching on colorism in a respectful manner. Actually I think Damson would be better as the next Black Panther than as a John Stewart, but I'm sure either would be fine
Timothy Olyphant is such a good choice for the role it's insane. If we're looking at actors in that age range though, that 50+ range, can I humbly suggest Nathan Fillion? He's voiced Hal in numerous DC movies, has worked with James Gunn before in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, has played an interesting and varied range of characters in the past, and really looks the part. Page to screen, he's got a great look for an older Hal.
Sight unseen, video unseen, I want Olyphant. He's the oldest, so the longest of shot, but d00d is always good, genre films or not. I want him to get a big break. Chris Pine and Ewan are great, everyone knows they're great, they'll never lack for opportunities. Tim should have had his shot long ago. Better late than never.
I think your point about Pine usually being the hotshot makes me want to see him as the wizened character even more as that’s the trajectory of Hal himself
1. Trevante Rhodes As John Stewart/Green Lantern 2. Milo Ventimiglia As Hal Jordan/Green Lantern 3. Luke Evans As Sinestro 4. Mandy Moore As Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire 5. Kevin Grevioux As Atrocitus 6. Terry Crews As Kilowog 7. Benjamin Bratt As Hector Hammond
For some reason, I can't help but see Aaron Pierre as Bronze Tiger. My pick for John Stewart has always been Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4, Invasion, Wynonna Earp)
@RickReasonnz IMO, Slade can also be charming. Contract gets canceled mid fight? Looks like we have to work together to get out of whatever mess we're in type stuff.
I have always felt that Chris Pine fit Hal Jordan. That's the super hero that works for him. I wouldn't be mad if Ewan McGregor or Timothy Olaphant got the role.
The more i think about the idea of Ewan as Hal, the more into it I get. It really depends if they want this to be a pre or post-Parallax Hal Jordan. If it's pre-Parallaxing, I could easily see someone more like Chris Pine slotting into it, where he can have the range to go big and theatrical villain. But, if this is a Hal who has been Parallax, been to that dark place and come out the other side, i could so see either Ewan or Oliphant crushing that performance.
Why does it matter if they cast a darker skinned African American actor when I hear about a lot of white characters being played by black actors and crushing it? It seems cringe to cast someone over someone else because they're darker. I used to get bullied for being Asian when I was young (not that I should play Asian characters, I don't have the cultural experiences. I just don't get it and I would like to get context from the people this affects)
Chris pine would be so good!! Definitely feel like it could be a similar character to an older version of his James Kirk from the Star Trek movies. Seasoned but still unpredictable and witty.
Chris Pine should be a Steve Trevor Variant that became a Green Lantern. After he sacrificed himself in the Wonder Woman movie to save every one, the ring shows up to him right before the plane blows up and says like, “Steve Trevor, you have displayed great feats of willpower and courage, yada yada yada, welcome to the Green Lantern Corps” and then he gets pulled to Oa, Diana does not know he survived
Do you think the people they are looking at for John Stewart could also be in the running for someone like Cyborg? Like whoever doesn’t get cast as John could get cast as Cyborg?
Chris Pine was trending on twitter a few days ago when this was all happening. I would say majority want him as Hal Jordan. Aaron Pierre is perfect for John Stewart.

Every time Nando says "Oily-phant" it kills me
Chris Pine has been playing young hal a large swath of his career so if they wanted an older mature Hal they really could've just used Fillion before he got cast as the green bowlcut.
I really hope Martian Manhunter shows up in the new DCU 🤞🤞🤞🤞
He's 100% going to be. Blue beetle already has an Easter egg for him
James Gunn already referenced his favorite cookies on social media, so he probably is.
Before he was cast as Steve Trevor, I wanted him as Hal Jordan. Rewatch Trek ‘09, and it’s pretty obvious how perfect Pine would be for Hal.
Chris Pine has been my number one pick for Hal Jordan since the first Star Trek reboot.
If Timothy Olyphant is in the running for anything, give it to him! We love him and he’s so under appreciated!
Tbh, the more I think about Ewan McGregor as Hal, the more I like it
Yeah, he really gives off the good guy vibe.
Controlled, tough, smart is definitely what you get from Damson Idris from snowfall. If that's what we get, but from the other side of the law, it would make a very interesting and exciting Jon Stewart
Thank you for bringing up the colorism. I feel it gets ignored far too often.
I would love a Ewan Mcgregor Constantine. He’s been my pick since the original Keanu movie.
Matt Ryan spoiled Constantine for me. Just can't imagine anyone else in the role.
@@RickReasonnz if you’ve read a significant amount of the OG HellBlazer series, you’d know that the character of Constantine has never truly been done correctly outside of that series. Matt Ryan always felt like a cosplayer to me.
@@chriscueva1866 Eh, we're never going to get comic accurate Constantine, especially that first "I'm a right bastard" run. Matt just feels good enough for my tastes anyway,.
He is gritty, smart, determined!!
i am praying for Timothy Olyphant for Hal Jordan. rumors say Chris Pine was number 2 and to be honest he’ll probably accept, but Olyphant would be so good
Josh Duhamel can bring both Brolin intensity and Olyphant charm.
So the hierarchy of the Green Lantern casting list has changed?
Nandodamus nailing the Aaron Pierre casting
3:29 I mean, JJ’s Star Trek as well he’s a pilot turned captain. Type casted for sure, but hey, at least there’s dozens of settings for it.
It should be my homie Josh. He loves the color green.
Seeing the destruction of Coast City in this show, even in a later season, is gonna be crazy.
Loved how you tackled this topic - respect
If Olyphant is being considered we can also toss in Josh Duhamel
Josh Duhamel or Timothy Olyphant would be a perfect Hal Jordan with either Aaron Pierre or Trevante Rhodes as John Stewart 👌🏽
Better late than never.
its not OY-lyphant, its O-lyphant
I think your point about Pine usually being the hotshot makes me want to see him as the wizened character even more as that’s the trajectory of Hal himself
Honestly all three of the actors who aren't out already sound like good picks
1. Trevante Rhodes As John Stewart/Green Lantern
2. Milo Ventimiglia As Hal Jordan/Green Lantern
3. Luke Evans As Sinestro
4. Mandy Moore As Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire
5. Kevin Grevioux As Atrocitus
6. Terry Crews As Kilowog
7. Benjamin Bratt As Hector Hammond
For some reason, I can't help but see Aaron Pierre as Bronze Tiger. My pick for John Stewart has always been Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4, Invasion, Wynonna Earp)
This is great because I’ve now heard Nando mention Fargo twice
Ewan could be similar to his role in Doctor Sleep. A broken mentor struggling with trauma
TimmyO is made for Slade. Throw an eye patch on the man and give him beef with 14 year Olds. It's perfect.
I cannot see Olyphant playing a ruthless merc. I just can't. Dude's too charming.
@RickReasonnz IMO, Slade can also be charming. Contract gets canceled mid fight? Looks like we have to work together to get out of whatever mess we're in type stuff.
I love McGregor for the weird pick as well! So many DC castings have been not weird!
Honestly I want Olyphant to get it so he can have one mainstream big franchise movie
Literally didn't even start the video and I want all three of those guys in the thumbnail to be Hal Jordan right TF now
You missed that Timothy Olyphant played Agent 47 in Hitman
I have always felt that Chris Pine fit Hal Jordan. That's the super hero that works for him.
I wouldn't be mad if Ewan McGregor or Timothy Olaphant got the role.
Chris Pine is my top choice, dude has the charisma and charm for Hal
Sunspot is honestly a different issue entirely given that sunspot is literally half black like his dad is a black man
I honestly first remember Chris Pine from Unstoppable. Loved that movie
Edit: 2 minutes later, he mentions Unstoppable 😂
Just need a Hal for many years.
Not mentioning Dungeons and Dragons for Chris Pine seems kinda wild
I remember Timothy Olyphant from the Hitman movie 😂 he was the best part of it. Chris Pine is a good pick, Ewan Mcgregor would do it fine too.
Chris Pine is in the DnD movie and Don't Worry Darling.
Chris Pine as Hal Jordan would allow me to die happy bro
Timothy is perfect for the roll. Ewan could do it, but I’d worry he’d take it too seriously.
Chris Pine will always be from Smokin' Aces in my book.
After watching Rebel Ridge, I think Aaron Pierre would do a great Midnighter.
It would be super funny and awesome if they just cast Phil Lamar as john Stewart.(He was the voice of john for justice league including unlimited).
Aaron Pierre as Martian Manhunter? Hmm very interesting Nando. I see your bet sir and raise Pierre as Sinestro. Thoughts?
Do you think the people they are looking at for John Stewart could also be in the running for someone like Cyborg? Like whoever doesn’t get cast as John could get cast as Cyborg?
14:35 either one of them could be playing krem as well
What happened to broin? Also Rebel Ridge looks like a loosely based Rambo First Blood.
Chris pine has basically played hal he’s the perfect casting
I just started watching HBO watchmen by Damon lindelof and it is amazing
I really want Olyphant as Ted Kord. No idea why
Chris Pine was trending on twitter a few days ago when this was all happening. I would say majority want him as Hal Jordan. Aaron Pierre is perfect for John Stewart.
