There was a great bit in Batman Brave and the Bold where Guy Gardner meets Alan Scott. At one point Guy mocks him for being weak against wood. “What happens when someone attacks you with a pointy stick?””Same thing that happens to you if they paint it yellow”
For all the issues I have with Geoff Johns' writing, the retcon that the reason for the Green Lanterns' weakness to yellow was Parallax being trapped inside the Power Battery was very efficient and also helped redeem Hal Jordan in a way that made sense.
And it’s pretty freaking cool. Like, name another weakness with such a badass excuse. Kryptonite? Ooh, it’s irradiated shards of your exploded homeworld. Boo freaking hoo. Lame. Weak to everything, because you’re just a normal human? Pedestrian. Weak to yellow because the LIVING EMBODIMENT OF FEAR IS TRAPPED IN YOUR SOURCE OF POWER? Freaking awesome.
I liked the reasoning behind the weakness. Also for most of these superheroes, they have stupid weaknesses. Superman: weak to pebbles. Martian manhunter: fire, which is very common. Flash: being disconnected from the speed force, or the cold. Wonder Woman: being tied up. (Her creator was kinda kinky) Batman: bankruptcy. Hawkgirl: disruptive memories.
John had a yellow turtleneck in his nightmare from Only a Dream. This probably wasn't intentional, but would make sense for Doctor Destiny to try to make him weaker.
ok but if you think about it Parallax living in the central battery can justify the weakness to Yellow entirelly: - the Lantern rings are connected to the Users mind on a subconscious level, right? - so if Parallax who is the Yellow Light of fear is inhabiting the Central battery then it means every Lantern is subconsciously aware a parallax - the Green light of Willpower weakens when exposed to ANY Fear, not just the Yellow Light of Fear therefore Yellow works on lanterns because they ARE Subconciously afraid of yellow. Why? because Yellow represents the biggest fear a Lantern could ever have: the Fear of Fear Itself
That actually makes a lot of sense. Reminds me of that time when one of Batman’s contingency plans against gl was to put his ring on while he sleeps, which would convince him he’s blind, and then the ring would actually make him blind
Possible that Parallax in the DCAU is just classified and most Lanterns, like the one in Batman Beyond's time period, were just told something like "The Impurity took millennia of work to remove" without having the nature of what the impurity was explained cause it wasn't important. It's just a little bit of trivia like "In those days we had to deal with X" that the older guys in the Corps joke about.
You're joking, but in the 60's he got a plucky Asian sidekick, who's skin the ring did not work on, explicitly because it was yellow. There's no logical reason to mention this, there's no reason you would ever need to use your ring's powers on another human's skin, but the went there, because racism.
Truthully, if I had a green lantern ring, I'd probably spend the first couple of hours designing the coolest looking green lantern uniform possible so I'd at least have a sick outfit to wear while inevitably failing my first super hero-ing attempt in spectacular fashion. I'm thinking something with a hood.
you mean the black bat suit with the yellow on his chest with a bat? Which reflects the spotlight the police use to call batman? God people are dumber than a box a rocks, the hippy that carries it and the yuppies who buy them put together.
“Detective, if I had a Green Lantern ring, I’d probably make myself an excellent grilled cheese sandwich that won’t stain all over my shirt that hides my awesome pecs.” -Ra’s Al Ghul at some point, idk
Head canon, maybe its a subconscious thing like it doesnt actually weakening him but more making him think of the fear thus subconsciously lowering his will power.
Because that is exactly how it works. You can overcome your fear, which allows intermittent resilience against yellow. Here, it would be more like yellow gas always worked because John Stewart just assumed that it would in his head, it was a weakness that he made up and the yellow impurity took hold of that. Other times, when he showed weakness against it, was because like the suitcase it was solid yellow and he was aware of it. When it did work against yellow, it must've been surprising for any Green Lantern, but if they tried to replicate it, they wouldn't know why it wouldn't work a second time. The avoidance of it is because at this point, they didn't know about Parallax and hence the exact way to combat it. You instinctively put up a shield regardless if you're weak against it, some times it worked, other times not, and you would never know why, but a 50-50 was better than just taking a hit without trying. Which is why John still avoided yellow beams or tried to throw green energy against yellow shields. A weakness does not have to be absolute.
Yellow wouldn't be a weakness to me. I would just jokingly hear "Nobody expects the yellow team" every time I see it. Of all the colors why would yellow be scary?
@@magnusm4 The point is that the ring *makes* yellow subconsciously associated with fear because of the impurity, be that Parallax or something else. It's an irrational fear that they don't even realize is just a fear.
I never really felt the color yellow being a weakness was too goofy, but the WAY it was so often such an impediment in the comics, like GL couldn't think of any other way to defeat someone wearing yellow, that was often worth an eye rolling. 'Oh no, the villain donned a yellow mech suit, I'll have to retreat and come up with another plan. Never mind that I can just hurl boulders at the chump.'
Food for thought. Those little blue men in red dresses aren't known for telling the truth, embellish their own importance (and power), and have a history of rewriting historical events to make themselves look better. It's entirely possible the Parallax entity did exist in the DCAU, was trapped in the primary Power Battery, got out, did a little crazy and a little killing, was defeated, and by the time Kai-Ro became a Green Lantern, GL School included a chapter on how the Guardians managed to single-handedly defeat Parallax, with no help from anyone else, thus removing the Yellow weakness. And they can see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
They should make batman batmobile and jet into a transformer that's a giant mech, car, jet good buff and not to similar to iron man yet still similar rich Playboy genius vibe
25:05 It might be because it's the whole Justice Lords, not just him. He's merely part of a council of leaders, not the unilateral leader of the society, and they may feel that it's fine for a Green Lantern to be a governmental leader, and not have an issue with a power structure like the Lords, since it's not dissimilar to the Guardians themselves.
I think it's also important to mention that the yellow impurity was officially taken away from the GL comics once Kyle took over with the last power ring made uniquely for him. Implying that the guardians had the ability to take away the impurity before the parrallax retcon. I think this had a play in how lax they could be with the weakness in the show and leaving it in as an homage makes a lot of sense. It's definitely there but can fit in the space where the Guardians can take it off once they trust that the lanterns won't turn on them like the manhunters turned on second 666/in dire situations
Worth mentioning that, while probably unintentional, the word that "parallax" derives from can also mean "to change" or "to exchange". Which kinda ties in with the idea that a parallax is a change of perspective (whether literal or figurative), and can be seen as relating to anxiety and fear being either a useful survival mechanism or a crux in that moment.
Giving the ring weakness to yellow is like taking an ability flaw on a tabletop RP character to get some extra feats. They removed the weakness at the cost of something else when they realized the weakness was too problematic. As for the QOTD, if I had a green lantern ring I would make ... well I'd start making simple shapes in order to feel out the capacity of the ring obviously. You know, kind of like a telekinetic stress ball. Then, since I associate green lanterns with psionics, and psionics with crystals, probably some crystals. But like, what would I WANT to make? I dunno, nothing the lantern rings make is permanent, and it's not like I'm fighting supervillains or anything. I'd probably just use the danged thing to fly.
For a short time, one writer made a point that the phrasing was "Due to a necessary impurity..." (As opposed to an "inherent impurity.." The idea was that a lantern or two abused the power of the rings and they added an flaw/weakness so that the Lanterns would not be "all-powerful." This fact allowed the Guardians to make changes to rings at times. too. The ring that Alan Scott would come to possess was a regular Lantern Corp ring that was being abused by a GL on Earth in Asia. He was tormenting Rice Paddy farmers and a Guardian *shifted* the weakness from "yellow" to "wood" -- which allowed the farmers to stop the rogue Lantern. When Alan Scott found the ring, it retained the new weakness to wood and not the color yellow. I really liked this ret-con and thought it was quite elegant and innovative. It answered a lot of questions and added to the lore.
Thank you, I knew I remembered a Gray Lantern from somewhere, but I could never find anything on it! Also since you brought him up, "Purple Cloak" from your video identifying every JLU member looks like Alan Scott to me, maybe with a hood instead of his usual high collar. Since Obsidian exists, it would make sense for him to be in the DCAU.
An easy explanation would be that the GL ring requires the user to be in the right state of mind. Fear makes the necessary state of mind harder, but not impossible, to maintain. The yellow light of fear can project fear into a person’s mind, making it harder for GLs to fight YLs. With their greatest weakness being symbolized with, empowered by, and just generally being yellow; GLs probably develop a conditioned fear response(basically what PTSD is) to the color, so they have a debilitating moment of panic when they see it, which pushes them out of their necessary mental state and disrupts their ability to use their powers.
5:10 you _do not_ need yellow to make green light, you can create any color of the rainbow with a single wavelength. the only lantern color that requires more than one wavelength is the white light of life (and maybe arguably the violet light of love, since that's usually depicted as closer to magenta).
I'm most impressed with how many times you put pop culture references to yellow in this one. (And the Hawkgirl shirt comment made me make a noise of amusement, it was very unusual.)
What might be a GL reference in Ben 10 Omniverse was the choice that Toepick, alien with a face so terrifying it causes the reanimated, psychotic dead to run for the hills, was one of the four or five aliens colored yellow.
There was a tie in coloring book for the justice league show. In the Dr. Destiny episode, they made GL’s nightmare that he was trapped in yellow. They had to simplify most of the fears, so the flash’s fear was being trapped in roots. May not be cannon but they did acknowledge it. QOTD: I would create a Gundam robot mech suit. Would draw alot of attention but it would be super cool
Parallax is kind of all over the place too, one moment he's scaring off The Spectre, the next he's getting taken down by Thunderer mooks on Quard while in possession of Superman.
How did Justice Lord Green Lantern keep his power ring even though he was abusing it? The same way Sinestro kept his power ring originally when he was abusing it. No one reported them. The ring monitors if you kill, and that was basically it. Neither Sinestro or Justice Lord John Stewart killed people. The only reason why Sinestro loss his ring and status was because Hal Jordon interfered. Now, if you're questioning why none of the other Earth Green Lanterns stopped John, the answer is simple: Superman. Remember when Green Arrow pointed out that you can't argue against Superman because he's Superman? Yeah, none of the other Green Lanterns saw the wrong that was being done, because they believed in Superman.
I didn't know I needed to hear the best friend forever ring Jingle in a major key. For the qotd: I'd probably construct multiple lantern light copies of myself to do a bunch of tasks at the same time
It's always a good day when the WD posts a new video! Always found weird that we never had that classic weakness for the GL in the DCAU, especially before the comics' retcon.
Arguably, the guardian's 'dealing' with the yellow weakness might not have been them just snapping their fingers to remove it, it could have been a battle, even the expression and the way he says it, that they 'dealt with it', treats it like a problem, not an intentional flaw to limit the power of green lanterns.
Maybe it's not a known weakness. Perhaps GL is only weak to yellow if he doubts his willpower. Something subconsciously makes him doubt himself when he sees yellow but he can overcome it by being especially determined. When facing Sinestro, GL is already esoecially deterimed to win so he has a built up defense against yellow. When he us hit with Jello-O, he isnt esoevially on guard so the yellow gets through as he doesnt deem it as a real threat. So, he is only weak to yellow when he doesnt think he will be weak to yellow or caught off guard.
I always loved one particular explanation the most, one I found originally in the "Generations" series (the series where time actually passes and characters age - it probably didn't originate there, but its where I first saw it) - the Guardians were well aware that the rings were far too powerful to not have some kind of counter to them, so when they began the core they also spread the idea that the rings were weak to yellow, and since the rings are fueled by the power and belief of the wielder (something we've seen in other stories like Tower of Babel where Kyle Rainer is given a post-hypnotic suggestion to believe he's blind, and since he has his ring on it actually makes him blind for as long as he keeps it on), the weakness became "truth" to everyone who heard about it, and since it was common knowledge within the core, everyone had heard of it. This is also used to explain why the original green lantern was weak to wood - during his first fight he was beaten by someone sneaking up behind him and hitting him with a wooden club, making him think that the ring must be weak to wood because it didn't automatically protect him from it - in essence, he created the exact kind of mental block by accident that the guardians produced on purpose. This inconsistency is even used in the series when Hal Jordan works it out that the weakness isn't real, he had turned down the role in this reality, but he knew that the original lantern was weak to wood but had no issue with yellow and that newer ones were vice-versa, so he figured it was probably false that it had any weakness at all.
In case anyone's wondering, the art on that Alan Scott part was substandard, because that was work by Mart Nodell, the guy who first drew Alan Scott back in the 40s. He also gave us the Pillsbury Dough Boy. The Alan Scott retcon was, IMHO, a bad idea. Not because I object to Yalan Gur - I like that part - but because of the Guardians being able to switch off the yellow weakness at any time. I sez: Yalan Gur found the Starheart on earth, used it to patch the yellow weakness, and the rest of the story proceeded in much the same fashion (including the Guardians making his ring weak to wood). In other words, the Guardians can introduce weaknesses, but they don't. The yellow weakness, on the other hand, was real.
@@Idran The original pre-Crisis idea was, the Guardians scooped up most of the magic of the (Earth-One) universe, and sent it off to another universe (that of Earth-Two). In the early 90s, it was changed to, the Starheart was still a big bundle of magic, but the Guardians disposed of it in some other manner (since there were no other universes any longer).I like your idea that the Starheart was somehow connected to Ion, but it wouldn't be something the Guardians built. So how about, there was a sorcerer who tried to bind Ion to magic, and the Guardians undid his work and contained the magic. It would explain why a magic GL ring functions so much like a scientific one.
Just because the bald green lantern says the guardians remove the yellow impurity, doesn't exclude that the yellow impurity was parallax. It just wasn't how Jordan who removed/freed parallax from the central battery. Could have been the guardians who put them in a different cell, or their attempts to stop his influence of instituting the purity caused him to get free, or any other number situations. The situation with parallax could also be a secret and so the average Green lantern doesn't know about it and is just told that the guardians removed.
(also not a US citizen but I wanna answer the QOTD anyway) The first construct I would make would be a cool suit, I have this idea for a trenchcoat & a Daft Punk-styled screen helmet. The second would be a set of tiny tools so I can work on electronics without breaking stuff
I always thought it was a nice touch that the yellow weakness is still sometimes a thing, even though mechanically it's not. The nature of Green Lantern powers makes it so that, if they subconsciously acknowledge the weakness, even though it no longer exists, it should still count. It'd be even cooler if old Green Lanterns had trouble with yellow, but new ones who never had to work around it didn't
It may not be the first thing I'd make, but if I were a lantern, I'd absolutely make use of feints. You think I'm hitting you with a construct from the right? No, that one isn't solid. The one behind you is
Theory, or rather an idea of how this could work in the DCAU. Maybr, if each color represents an emotion, and yellow being a representation of fear, with fear being the weakness of Green Lanterns, then maybe if a GL is experiencing a moment of doubt, a jolt of fear, then they become vulnerable to the color yellow. Basically, if you get shaken by something, if only a little, then fear has touched you, and weakened you.
So Kryptonite was randomly made up because the Superman voice actor on a radio show wanted to go on vacation and they needed a reason for him to be gone
QOTD Answer: A panacea medicine (you could immediately start curing preventable diseases with the power of the ring). Also, super nervous that you wouldn't cover the yellow impurity, glad you did. Would have also been cool to mention Black Hand's power over lanterns when mentioning Black Light.
Yeah I'm guessing from everything that it's there, to an extent, in some GLs, but it's not telegraphed for obvious reasons, and doesn't completely nullify the green energy, just works better against it (& maybe specifically yellow energy/gas, not really solid objects, unless it's jello). I like the idea that overcoming fear is in play too, and DCAU John hasn't really overcome it like his Justice Lord counterpart, but would be immune to the yellow impurity is he was, like Jessica becomes. Then at some point the Guardians are able to remove it completely. Hey maybe Kai Ro is weak to wood
The writer's statements make it seem that at the time, jon having trouble against yellow items was just a meta reference, not a hard rule. The one thing thats really funky to ne is just the yellow jello breaking the shield.
I remember the Green lantern charge used to last for 24 hours regardless of how much or how lucky you use the ring. But they change that I'm guessing shortly after crisis on infinite earths
So, was John hooking up with the yellow-clad Hawkgirl the equivalent of Martian Manhaunter hooking up with Fire in Tom King's 'Human Target' series? Was it some sort of weird BDSM type thing for him? Furthermore, does that mean she started wearing even more yellow as a kind of 'f#$k you'?
Aside from the Jell-o, all the other examples are things that arguably can either overpower GL at that moment or (like with the gas attacks) start affecting GL before he has time to put up a barrier. I think it works as an homage without making it an actual weakness...again excepting that stupid bowl of Jell-o.
I can reconcile the guardians being able to alter the purity of the lanturn "at will" while parallax forces an impurity. Perhaps Parallax, as you put it, is a *bug*. The guardians are supposed to be "tech" based, and an undetected bug that gets into the (like a computer virus) makes sense. It's an entity that's essentially made of fear, and the battery is mainlined into the spectrum. That's not really even head cannon though as I only found out about their ability to change it at will here 😅
I'd like to belive it's like how the plan is to make Hal go blind, When they notice that the beam is yellow long enough to process the color that yellow weakness pops up at the back of their brain so it makes it weaker in the moment
I remember that another Alen Scott reboot was that the Guardians had attempted to get rid of magic but were just able to draw all the magic of Oa into the green meteorite and it escaped into space crash landing on earth.
One time in the comics, Hal Jordan realized that a space ship that had been painted entirely yellow still had to have vents for its propulsion system and that the entire interior of the ship is not likely yellow. Guess what happens when you will the lantern energy to enter those vents and start breaking the propulsion systems and all that energy suddenly has no where to go and be used?
Thing about the yellow weakness is that it just means that the rings are ineffective against yellow. Being around the color yellow doesn't weaken them like kryptonite does Superman. Also, although Green Lanterns can't affect yellow directly, there are ways around it. Hal Jordan was able to defeat an enemy in yellow armor by tossing him into a pit of mud. While covered with mud Jordan was able attack and defeat him. Another option is to create a bubble around the target and then remove all of the air within it, knocking the target out. Concerning Sinestro's ring, Guy Gardner discovered how Sinestro's ring was powered: It is powered by contact with the energy from a Green Lantern ring. Thus, when Sinestro fights a green lantern, the green lantern is powering the very weapon he is using. Also, it is logical that if Sinestro's ring is powered by fear and the Central Power Battery contains Parallax who is the entity of fear, then Sinestro is tapping into the power of fear through green lantern energy.
Well in the comics how Jordan after a few years of being a Green lantern believing that his ring wouldn't work directly on yellow started using indirect action to affect yellow things including heating up the are so that the yellow metal would start glowing red hot and allow him to use his ring against it

No offense but you all didn't read comics because if you did. You wouldn't like this lineup. Wally west, John Stewart and Hawkgirl are not original seven. They should've came along later.
I have a vivid memory of reading a JLU kids book or colouring book where John fights a knight in yellow armor. I swear he actually mentions this or the narration does. Something like the yellow specifically making him weak.
I'm already surprised that yellow lanterns only became a thing so recently, I had thought sinestro being the yellow lantern thing had been around for much longer. But then again, the most contact I had with him was through the justice league cartoon and lego batman 3, which relies heavily on the emotional spectrum lanterns.
27:02 Fun Fact: Phil LaMarr didn't get the "Old Yeller" gag until I mentioned it to him during my interview with him. (Which, if you think about it, makes total sense. He wasn't in either scene where it was mentioned, so why would he remember those lines nearly 20 years later?) I totally disagree with you on Sinestro's Sinestro Corps uniform being better, though. I've never liked the yellow combined with his hot pink skin. He looks much better in his original blue & black outfit, IMO.

@ArcDragoon Nope, wrong, that’s not “how it works”. Different versions of these characters work different ways. None of that applies to this TV show.
I love the idea that a Pikacku could solo an army of green later.

GL's eye at 3:45 threw me for a loop.
Yeah, what the fuck happened there?
Might be a leftover bit of fruit juice or whatever splatted on his face in the prior scene. That’s from the In Blackest Night 2 parter.
*Death Battle debate flashbacks💀💀💀*
Isn't it more likely that that"s just a reference to yellow often representing fear in general, like green for envy or pink for love?

There was a tie in coloring book for the justice league show. In the Dr. Destiny episode, they made GL’s nightmare that he was trapped in yellow. They had to simplify most of the fears, so the flash’s fear was being trapped in roots. May not be cannon but they did acknowledge it.

Good thoughts!

Oh, I like that a lot better too. It does reintroduce the question of what the Star Heart is, though. Maybe some ancient artifact associated with Ion?
@@kingbeauregard Ooh yeah, that's a cool direction to take it; I like leaning more into Scott's ring being magical with that take
Just because the bald green lantern says the guardians remove the yellow impurity, doesn't exclude that the yellow impurity was parallax.

7:25 I NEVER REALIZED THAT!!!! IT WAS YELLOW!!!!🤯🤯
And that Jell-O DID look pretty spooky

QOTD Answer: A panacea medicine (you could immediately start curing preventable diseases with the power of the ring). Also, super nervous that you wouldn't cover the yellow impurity, glad you did. Would have also been cool to mention Black Hand's power over lanterns when mentioning Black Light.
I never tought they would make this video, I hear that idea for old video, and it finally came out.
I can't wait to dive into this video. I always wondered was Yellow a Green Lantern weakness in the DCAU!
The writer's statements make it seem that at the time, jon having trouble against yellow items was just a meta reference, not a hard rule.
The one thing thats really funky to ne is just the yellow jello breaking the shield.
If I had a Green Lantern ring, the first thing I'd make would probably be a bubble. But a really good bubble... shield!

Nah that’s just her cool new monocle
One time in the comics, Hal Jordan realized that a space ship that had been painted entirely yellow still had to have vents for its propulsion system and that the entire interior of the ship is not likely yellow.
Guess what happens when you will the lantern energy to enter those vents and start breaking the propulsion systems and all that energy suddenly has no where to go and be used?
If i had a green lantern ring, i'd make a construct that allows me to scratch my back easily. Pretty useful, isn't it?
First thing I would do with a Green Lantern ring? Give myself a cool hat.
Well in the comics how Jordan after a few years of being a Green lantern believing that his ring wouldn't work directly on yellow started using indirect action to affect yellow things including heating up the are so that the yellow metal would start glowing red hot and allow him to use his ring against it
I would make more green lantern rings. The Guardians won't be able to stop me if i pull up to oa with seven hundred rings and a cool green necklace.
No they still can; GL rings can already canonically do that anyway
