  • Jaguar XK8 gear selector cable adjustment & a couple of other fixes
    This video was requested to show how I adjusted the gear selector cable with an easier method than the Jaguar one.
    I carried out a couple of other fixes at the same time.

    Exactly the way I did it. I've often pointed out that how JTIS describes certain procedures is altogether more difficult than need be.

      Thanks for you comment Gary. In my work I am required to find better ways of doing things. I just bought the same LEAN philosophy to car maintenance.

    fix and excellent single handed video. Might want to have a look at the end screen links as they are too low and can’t see them properly. Good stuff thanks Damian

    Great video, I’m going to have a go later, my xk8 is a 98, it throws a wobbly when I use the left side 2,3,4, gears
    Shes been standing still for a couple of years
    And got a bit damp inside, so will probably spray connectors with contact cleaner whilst centre console off .
    Keep up the good work

      Let me know how you get on. I fear you might have a few electrical issues but its worth trying the cable.

    • @stevet7108
      @stevet7108 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Result! Adjusted cable, sprayed contact cleaner on all connections, noticed a loose screw on j gate. The gear lever feels more solid drops into place better
      Took her for a test drive using 2,3,4 gears all seems good
      Well chuffed :)
      Can’t thank you enough for this video

    Excellent stuff. As previously mentioned, this is a job that needs doing on my 96 XK8 as it sometimes fails to register 4th when shifting manually (unless I really drag the lever all the way back). When this happens it throws up a gearbox fault code that I then have to reset via the OBD port. I reckon that this is the fix 🤞. Thanks again.

    • @ccuk
      @ccuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gerard. I hope this is the fix for you but I fear yours might be something different. I am not familiar with the earlier 5 speed gearboxes. I'd love to hear how you get on.

    • @gerardbooth40
      @gerardbooth40 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ccuk I’m pretty confident this is the issue as 4th is the rearmost position on the J-gate with the older 5 speed ZF before the slide across to D. If I really yank the lever back into the rear of the frame it goes in every time and so it sounds like the tweaking of the cable might well be all that’s required. I’ll let you know in due course...

    • @ccuk
      @ccuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gerardbooth40 I have not had any issues since I adjusted the cable. For me it was slipping out of gear into neutral.

      WB Badger, Get into the linear switch module and clean the oxidation from the phosbronze contacts and the PC board. Then lube with Deoxit Gold. Problem forever solved.

    Hi. Thanks for posting. Mine will not go into drive most days without first passing drive. In addition if you go all the to 4th its hard to get 4th to light up then back to second you have to pass second and go back. Also park light up but you have to jiggle it then you here a small click. Might this procedure help this?

    • @ccuk
      @ccuk  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This procedure is easy so worth a try. I believe the earlier 5 speed gearbox uses the cable on both sides of the J gate, so if that is what you have then it sounds positive. If you have a later 6 speed the left side of the J gate works electronically so issues on that side are not affected buy the cable adjustment.

    question. my j gate won't start in drive. drive doesn't light up. to get into drive you have to go past drive and then back to drive. and you cannot select second. it won't light up. Can this help that?

      If it is badly adjusted then this process could help. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

    My XK8 has not kicked down properly since the gear selector cable was replaced by a Specialist. Is this just a coincidence?

    • @ccuk
      @ccuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I am not sure, but I suspect it is a coincidence It could be that the battery was disconnected and the gearbox is still on its learning phase. There is a kick down button under the throttle pedal that is activated when accelerating hard.
