  • In a recent episode, I explained how every time I Shifted the J gate (on my 96 XK8 Convertible) from '4' to 'D'. It would display an amber warning light, an error message stating 'GearboxFault' and then go into 'Limp Home' mode. In this video, I fix the issue on my car with a simple adjustment. I also manage to find and resolve the issue that has meant the shift lever movement has been getting progressively less smooth over the past couple of months. And run through some of the Secrets of the XK8 SHIFTER. The 'J gate' or 'Randle Handle'

The 2003 and up XK8s have a screwed down shifter surround. Much easier to access and we have an LSM instead of the microswitches. The only thing simpler than a solenoid is a rock. You're so gentle with disassembly. I always feel like grabbing the item and beating you with it.😁 It's not you, it's me.

That's worth seeing John, thank you. Naturally I just had to go outside in the near dark to check if my shifter "latched" the gears in the right spot. And now I know how to get at the mechanism if I ever need to. Cheers.

It was interesting to see how the earlier elector works compared to the later one. The later selector detaches from the cable when it is moved from D to the left hand side, therefore does not move the cable to select the lower gears. Great video John and I am glad the fix was not expensive.

Very useful and informative as always from John!
I have one of the last of the x100's (2005 built) and I am getting a fault whereby when I shift from D across to 5 then Sport is not available, and also the semi auto shift doesn't work either, I.E put it in 2 and the gearbox changes up to 3. Or Put it into 3 to get some engine braking and the gear doesn't change down.
If I switch off the car and leave it a while, when I come back sport is available, but it becomes unavailable again if I try to use sport and J gate.
Would you guys suggest a look at the microswitches or will mine be different being a late car?

Thanks John. This was just the inspiration that I needed to sort out my own selector cable. Whilst I was under the centre console I also soldered in cables for my phone charger and routed the wires behind the panels to emerge at the air vents - I hate loose wires on display and having to have the ashtray flap permanently open for the charger was not a good look. All better now (apart from a lightly soldered thumb!).

Lon from California here letting u know my new acquisition is incredibly well sorted and in excellent nick as mike brewer says. Sits an inch low in front but mounts not that bad according to Al's Jaguar but he thinks needs springs and dampers. Hasn't been on a loft yet as hes incredibly busy but he'll call me when can do because I provided him with his best employee.
Im looking to change rims as the impeller rim is ok but the apollos make car look better in my opinion however as you know very hard to find. I also like. Jupiter from x150 and their are spacer adapters online to make it work but I think I have an even better idea. Currently.idk the exact offset of the impeller but know its between 15-25mm which mean sit further out then a higher number say 45, which happens to be the offset of f pace rims. The adapters convert bolt pattern and center bore to the x150 and as luck would have it the f pace as well with the 45 offset.
So unless I'm an idiot the space adds 20 mm and then the f pace rim will not go in 45 but just 25 perhaps same as impeller.
I'll find out exact as the spacers come in 18 20 or 25mm so have to figure out what's best. Any thought am I missing something? And how do I send you pics that I've never done on youtube or are you on Facebook?
Oh the hairdryer on veneers sadly did nothing and I tried for very long time it may have slightly changed the green hue but not even sure of that. Maybe you can try on a nice milky end vent trim piece.
I was very disappointed as I wanted it to work very very much.
On another note I purchased an all leather black steering wheel and shift knob as I think a little less wood would look better and with all black interior.
I saw set of 3 nice trim rings for main gauges for only $20 on ebay but I dont think I'm going to get them because I have navigation and to me would look askew. I saw on forums that I can get a harness and have gauges but I'm afraid to swap out wood on passenger side because of airbag. Not afraid I'd buy wrong set not sure what my hesitation is at the moment. Then my milky wood would also vanish along with the antiquated technology.
One last thing I was watching your video today on popping off hood struts hoping youd mention something that nobody seems to. My hood latches stick on one side sometimes wont open. So do I use lithium grease wd40 or what you recommend? I'm suprised no one mentions. Wait I got more I fixed my key fob 100% thanks to you but contact cleaner worked better then isopropyl for sure! Then I finally programmed correctly what gave me problems on several attempt is my position 1 doesnt detent or click I just had to go by feel otherwise goes to 2 and radio come on.
Ok I rambled on n on I hope you don't mind. I wouldn't have bought the car if wasnt for you! Cheers Lon Kraus

Hey John, nice to hear, that you could fix the problem! And by the way: this video will be very useful for me too, because one of my j-gate light bulbs has gone. So if I understood you correctly, I will do have to do the whole procedure: j-gate surround off, veneer off, center console off, j-gate off - just to change the light bulb... I was still hoping that there could be an easier way... ;-) regards from Vienna

Hi John, I think there will be codes stored in the gearbox ECU it's just that your scanner is a simple EOBD reader which is only able to read basic engine codes, if the fault is bad enough for the car to go into limp mode, which usually means it staying in 3rd gear, I don't think just switching off the ignition will erase the code even disconnecting the battery should not erase it. I had a gearbox fault with my 2004 XKR which has the six speed gearbox and uses the CAN wiring to communicate with the gearbox ECU as well as the cable, it must have taken me week to track the fault and I don't think there is enough room here to explain it. Thanks for the interesting video. John.

    • @AndyK.1
      @AndyK.1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. He needs to spend a few more quid on a better code reader. Though the one he has is nice and quick to erase codes.

Twice now the shifter has become very stiff and difficult to move. Usually after sitting a few weeks. At about the same time the "D" bulb does not illuminate and the car will not shift into second. Just after that, the car will not start in Park, only in Neutral and I receive a fault on the information screen. When a make the cable adjustment everything is resolved...for about a year. Then, out of the blue, the shifter will become stiff again and I'm readjusting again.

I'm sure the micro switches are of the make Cherry (with two cherries as logotype). They are also used as brake light contact on the pedal and for the trunk light in the XK8. You can guess how I know and they don't seem to be of good quality.

And If I force it to 4 it engages and then I can come back to D, or I can force it to 4 and I get Gearbox Fault light. Please advice where should I start looking. Many thanks

Hi John, really helpful video, nicely paced for someone wanting to follow the process. My shifter (5 speed Merc box) tends to fall out of 4th and revert to D, especially when cold. Any ideas what that might be would be welcome. Local Jag indie says need to fit a replacement J-gate. Thanks in advance….

Hi John, great videos. I just acquired my first xk8 and upon doing research, stumbled upon your videos. They’ve helped a bunch so far. I’m having the same 4-d issue with mine and it appears that the disc on the underside of the gear selector that pushes the microswitch for manual operation has broken. Do you happen to know a source for a new part or part # for it? I’m located in New Jersey, United States. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks again John. With my 99 XKR received on the first day of lockdown in NZ, haven't had much opportunity to drive it yet. Yesterday however, suddenly getting a gearbox fault. It was perfect the first couple of drives. It seems to get a little confused as to what gear it should be in, then just stays in fourth gear or lower. I restart the car and fault cleared and then sporadically happens again (again very little opportunity to drive yet). I've booked it in for a transmission oil change at a specialist garage just to be safe as I have no idea of the status of the oil. Do you think it sounds like a selector issue?

@@ToTheGarage thanks John, first day of no lockdown and it decided to snow. You get something in your head, like maybe the transmission oil, or lack of and then you think maybe best to wait until can get to the garage. I had a quick look for the dipstick point for the transmission but didn't find it. I know it's not the ZF gearbox the XK8 has but curious if you have a video covering checking the colour/level of the oil? Thanks John.

@@ToTheGarage so after a fair bit of driving today, mostly in Christchurch city with some open road driving, I managed to get the fault come up just once, this time without a low battery. Seems perfectly happily on the manual side of the j-gate but gets a little confused when slowing in D. Had the transmission oil checked and that seems no problem which is a huge relief. I think that leads me to think it's an ecm issue, will keep investigating.
