I love watching John Good speak about DW and drums in general. My appreciation and love for drums is always reinforced after watching him speak. Keep up the great videos!!
We are always looking for new movements forward with our gear and we love any suggestion, request or feedback we can get from our customers. We do appreciate yours however we are pretty satisfied with our DW Remo heads that leave on our kits out of our factory here. At the same time we understand these heads might not be the ideal for every single DW drums player. Thanks for watching!
With John Good's idea of having small holes around the head, i can now achieve that "perfect bass drum thump ! Thanks Mr.Good..Your name says it all..;)
What has to be loved about DW and John Good is that he doesn't seem to do something for advertisment or money. They just always want to make the best drums! They even try to make them cheaper! Great job DW!!
@Clancedrums Mr. Good is an extremely kind, warm, and passionate person and I am sure he will be glad to hear of your respect for him. Glad you could make it to the show. :)
@DeadpoolisCanadian Good question! We are not currently offering our products one line internationally. I personally think we should and we are looking to drive the availabilty of our gear on line in the years to come. Hopefully coming soon...
dear mr. good. I saw you at the Musik messe in Frankfurt. When I saw you, my stomach turned over. then I played on the Smart practice drumkit. and you spoke to another guy, I stand up, and now comes the best. you told me. No, don't stop and please continue. I SHAT BRICKS. It was like talking to god. Clancedrums
I wish Remo made those Coated clear, Clear edge and vented kick Reso Heads without the dw name on it; ie, just as a normal series of Remo heads like emperors, ambassadors etc.
Great question! Unfortunately we are not an official head company. We worked with Remo on the design on our heads to get the most tonality out of the shell as possible. Our heads are all single ply heads but we have heard good feedback of our customers using Evans heads for our drums yielding great results for what their ear wants to hear!
...port holes then no need for anymore air to come out. If you choose to use the Kick Port it's best you are not using a ported head. We hope this helps and thanks so much for choosing DW!!
@dww0902 the fully coated heads are built the same way and are also "crimped" style heads featuring the same rounded collar. The fully coated bass drum batter head does not have the same "muffling" ring like the coated/clears do. They sound similar to the equivalent Remo heads, but with a special DW "touch" to differentiate ;)
Hey there! We do not have any plans at this time for a heavier set head as of right now. We have always liked a single ply head to come on our drums out of the factory. On the other hand we do not frown on our customers using different heads then the factory Remo heads we use now.
The Mag Throw has a distance between the hole pattern of 1 1/2 inches. If your snare has this pattern then you are good to go! We have had customers drill their snares to fit the Mag Throw also.
Great question! We are thinking where mount the Mag throw will make it functional for you. From what it sounds like you will need be more worried about the mounting holes spacing for your current snare and if it will take the Mag throw as is. The hole spacing for the Mag throw is 1 3/8's. We hope this helps you!
@garyhope2 Thanks so much! The biggest point to these videos is too educate our customers and hearing your feedback is the best thing we could hear. ;)
Awesome thanks so much! What sizes and finish type did you go for?? When you are ready to replace your heads just ask for the DW Remo heads. These are the heads we install with every kit that leaves the factory! No embarrassing questions from you we promise! Eventually your head will not take tuning very well. Major dents are also a sign it's time to change those babies out! The Kick Port is definitely a great product and we would never take away from that. We say if you head has the small...
Thanks for putting the numbers that was really cool I used it and then went one by one until I was really happy. I hope it stays in tune like my Yamaha Tour custom. Thanks John. I bought your Pure Almond Snare with chrome hardware. It sounds great with a power stroke Reno head and Evans 300 snare side bottom head
Good to say john, mark my personal life in great affection. Eh sense this time the motivation to continue to grow and support creativity and gave me life to have a set of his company ... Each day I learn more of his advice in life and I hope to visit them and tell my experience from that known to the great company of drums. my greetings!
@BenOBrienSmith skepticism is a good thing :) There are many reasons why some of our artists choose to endorse heads other than Remo. Best thing to do is ask them. John Good chose Remo USA crimped ambassador-weight heads because he feel they are the ideal match for the sound and quality he is trying to achieve with DW Drums. They are made about 30 miles away from DW's Oxnard Headquarters in Valencia, CA (right next to Magic Mountain).
@Clancedrums well, we don't actually make the heads. They are made by Remo USA. You could always get a full clear head of your choice and then put the DW Bass Drum sticker on it
Chances are you actually need to loosen the wires some. If you tighten the snare wires too much it can really affect the sound in a resonance way. It is fine to tighten the snare to a higher tone but you do not necessarily need to tighten the the snare wires so much. Let us know how it goes!
I REALLY LIKE YOU SIR HOW YOU UNDERSTAND TO EVERYTHING, i wish you a lot of success and good health....I have just one stand DW, but I am proud to have it
Glad to see the 20x20 bass drums now a standard part of the dw line up.. When I ordered mine, it had to be custom.. As for heads, Remo Ambassador resonant heads, but Evans batter heads are my personal preference.. I adore Remo and have used them all of my life, up until 3 years ago.. Evans caught up.. Started playing at age 4, now 38.. So that's a long time to stay loyal before jumping ship in terms of playable gear.. For bass drum.. I still prefer Remo Powerstroke..
@MrStockholmz yes! We do factory tours every Thursday at 2pm. We only allow 10 people total on wach tour so that everyone has an intimate experience. You need to book your spot in advance with our Customer Service department by phone (1-800-45-DRUMS) or email (CustomerService@dwdrums(dot)com). The tour is about an hour long and ends in the Showroom where everyone is allowed to play the kits. Best of all, IT's FREE! See ya soon ;)
I’ve switched to playing exclusively DW factory heads because they sound even better than store bought remo/Evan’s/Aquarian options. No lie, they literally sound better. Which is funny because most people consider them to be stock heads, but they are not JUST stock heads, they are very special. I just realized this over the past 2 weeks after purchasing a DW kit and hundreds of dollars of heads that ended up not sounding as good as the factory heads, after being an Evans/remo/Aquarian enthusiast for 18 years, I literally will only play DW factory heads now LOL.
@MrNeedsImprovement indeed we owe the world an official DW Tuning video. It's in the works. Coming soon. Until then, finger tighten in the criss-cross pattern John shows in this video, then give each rod two turns following the same pattern, and then lightly tap next to each rod and "fine tune" (1/8th turns). You'll notice if one rod sounds out of tune with the one next to it, the one across from it is probably also out of tune. Again, video coming soon.
i was wondering if you were going to answer i glad you did !!!!!! I like the fact that you guys answered showed class!!!!!!! I do like your heads but stores don't carry them or if they do very few selections. The tom heads with the white coating i really like!!!!!!!!
Our pleasure to help! The 10 inch is not something you would find in a store normally but you can special order it or purchase it from our on line store. ://dwdr(dot)ms/JlKRwJ
Have you guys and gals thought about getting into the 12 mil and 14 mil single ply heads? I would totally buy DW 12 mil heads for my whole kit - kick, snare, and toms.
@DrumWorkshopInc DW toms sound amazing right out of the box. Is there any chance you could post a video of your production line at the tuning station? The videos I have found so far on tuning are for drummers wanting to choke, muffle, and mute..
@colliernation96 The heads you see in the video are made exclusively for DW by Remo. You can find them by going to dwdrums(dot)com. Just click on the "Shop" button in the right bottom corner of the home page. That will take you the Shopatron home page. In the left hand corner of the Shopatron page click on "DW" and that will take you to all available DW Remo factory heads for purchase. You will find every size and style your heart or drum kit desires! Thanks!
@JoshTinkler Because the PDP line is made overseas it is the best way logistically to use the heads we get overseas for the PDP kits. You can always upgrade to the DW Remo factory style heads if you like. ://dwdr(dot)ms/viiwQq
the problem with crimped heads is that they are tensioned from the factory, so they wear out more quickly. Evans heads go dead after a month of so, while remos last a long, long time, at least the glued types. The collar on evans is better, but remos sound better.
betterworld1 i just told you the advantage. I have never had a remo pull out. But evans heads go dead after a couple months. I have had remos last years..they deaden a bit, but still sound lively after a long time.
wiremessiah ive played the same evans heads for years and idk what youre talking about. obviously dw knows about glued heads slipping out thats why they dont risk selling them on their drums.
betterworld1 thats why your drums sound shitty. Evans sound okay for a few weeks and drop after that. I have done extensive testing and every good drummer agrees. Evans simply copies everything remo does but worse. I use an evans head on my floor tom because i want that dead sound, but anything i want with life and resonance i use remo. Remo glued.heads dont pull out any more than your dad did.
I recently purchased a beautiful DW 6 piece Collectors kit plus your new Al. snare so they all have the heads you show here. When I want to replace, do I ask for Remo heads or DW heads? Embarrassing question coming, just how do you know when to replace a head other than if it completely splits or someone punches a hole through it? Regarding the kick drum, you say no to the big holes so what do you honestly think of the kick ports that many use. I do have one but have not installed it as yet.
@leeboi6858 we do not sell a fibreskin heads with the dw logo, but you can always buy a plain one from a dealer and put our DW Die Cut Bass Drum sticker on it. If you live in the US, you can buy the sticker online here bit(dot)ly/dwstickers
What about the fully coated heads, both tom and bass drum? Are they built the same way? As in, do the fully coated tom heads feature the same "rounded" collar, and does the fully coated bass drum head feature the same internal muffling ring as the clear/coated? Also, how do these generally sound compared to equivelant Remo heads?
@killjoyshidae1208 The Emperor Weight heads are great heads for sure! Right now we have a couple of different models that Remo has been kind enough to work with us on. Great suggestion but no plans right now. We'll definitely file that one. :) We currently are selling the Performance Series snare head separately and you can request one when ordering a Collector's snare. Have a good one!
Sorry you are having troubles with your snare head and tuning range. The Brass shell likes a mid to upper range of tuning. You might want to go for a sound dot enhanced type head to focus the note some and mid range tuning. Have you seen our tuning video with John Good yet? Please check the link below for that video and keep in contact with us about your progress with your Brass snare. youtube(dot)com/watch?v=yl9wgXSfxew&feature=plcp
Hi, i have been looking for a dw fibreskin bass drum resonant head for ages, with dw logo etc...... i have the standard black, i bought a coated white one, but i cannot find a 20 inch fibreskin version. Can you tell me if you actually sell these as accessories? Thanks, Leigh.
We are happy to hear you are liking our heads! You can special order the heads you want from any of our authorized dealers. Or if you are located in the continental US you can order them on line also. Feel free to check the links below for our Dealer Locator and our on line store through Shopatron. locator(dot)dwdrums(dot)com/drum/ store(dot)dwdrums(dot)com/home/index/1845(dot)0(dot)1(dot)1
I think i'm going to use the idea of 6 holes around the circumference of my bass drum head, as opposed to using an Evans E.Q. bass drum cushion..I never had a hole on my front head because i thought that with the combination of a closed head and the Evans cushion it would give me the right amount of punch, mallet attack, and low end frequencies that most drummers, including myself ,are always looking for..
I am a fan of dw drums but the same time, I don't even own a dw kit. John good is a mad genius though. Hey do you think you guys could send me a drumset to me that would be awesome. No I am serious about that. Send me a dw kit to my house so I could beat the crap out of them and enjoy that beautiful sounds of dw drums.
We couldn't agree more! We keep making these videos as long as you come back too watch. Thanks so much!
I love watching John Good speak about DW and drums in general. My appreciation and love for drums is always reinforced after watching him speak. Keep up the great videos!!

John Good is the man with plan always. We appreciate you being proud towards your DW hardware. :)
Sure! We have had more then a few PDP players upgrade their heads to the DW Remo heads with great results!
Great to hear! Thanks for your feedback and we are very happy knowing you are achieving the sound you want from your bass drum. Enjoy!

@SMoKeScReeeeN so glad it doesn't go unnoticed. We feel those details are the special ingredients that make our drums inspiring to play :)

Great informative and useful video. Very well and articulately done.
@Clancedrums clear reso bass drum head? Interesting idea. We do not currently offer that. I've seen people use a coated/clear batter head.
An equal partnership! They have great heads besides ours but we prefer these style to outfit our kits from the factory with. :)

John the PDP kit i have needs a new bottom head. Do you guys sell DW snare bottom heads ?
Question - can the new mag throw off fit drums with a center bead, or does the shell have to be flat?
I wish the 23” bass drum was still available, seems like the Goldilocks of sizes!

@1111ccccgggg indeed they do :) You're gonna love that snare.
I know you said the wire clips are brass, but what are the wires themselves made of?
Trying to find out what are the ply numbers on the dw Remo batter and resonant heads😓
And use the Reno hazy bottom head and power stroke top head as a factory snare head.
How long has Remo been making heads for DW?
@DrumWorkshopInc do you make clear Reso heads?
What do these sound like in a gretsch? I use emporer vintage right now.
@DrumWorkshopInc
will you make them once please?
Could the snare batter head be compaired to a cs black dot head?
will the mag snare throw off switch work on any snare drum?
Where can I buy your drum heads and snare wires ?
Would these drum heads sound good on a PDP Double Drive kit?
Hey DW, do you think those resonant heads on the toms are good for years?
There are many factors but they should last a while.
can i buy those heads on their site
i bet those head innovations sound good.
Sarcasm?
no.
what kit does john Good play?
