If you guys know any I missed, post them in this here comment apparatus! I feel there are probably so many examples in TV shows, but even hunting these down took more effort than I thought. Anyways I'll see you later, say hi to your mom for me!
Fortnite in Infinity war (ik its a movie)
in wandavision the kids from wanda use atari and gamecube controllers. but for some reason the gamecube controllers are wireless and they just cut off the cables instead of using wavebirds
Where's the south park world of War craft episode ?
I mean it's easily the best one in any show .
come on, how come you never mention the cameo of a boxed copy of LittleBigPlanet 2 in Breaking Bad, which actually breaks the continuity of the entire show? that's just rude!
Cool topic.
How about all the times The Big Bang Theory gang played games on the Wii like Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort (with Leonard using a very stupid looking archery add on), etc.
in episode 3 of house, they reuse the same clip of samus getting into the chozo statue, but this time its a patient playing, and she acts like she lost when objectively shes just progresing further or "winning". someone on that production team really likes metroid

Whoever it is really seems to like Nintendo games in general, lest we forget that this show referenced fucking Arceus.
I think House said 'level four' sarcastically, like he's a real gamer who knows that a normie like the other guy wouldn't understand
He name drops arceus I’m pretty sure. He’s definitely a huge Nintendo nerd.
That’s almost definitely not what the writers meant but I can see him either being so out of touch or just knowing he wouldnt understand and dropping that.
@@dr_doritotf2305maybe he said it because it would be embarrassing if he said he was on "level 1" so he said "level 4"

It's crazy how show makers just literally pay zero attention to how games work and think nobody will notice.
in a werid way its kinda admireable
No, they know gamers will notice. But those aren’t people, they’re lines of code!
Because nobody cares except for people like alex
They are probably like: "Actual gamers won't watch this show anyway."
Because no one actually cares about that nonsense. Its a non-issue. Its just a throw away joke meant so a person that doesn't play said game may notice

I think the only show I've seen that perfectly understands videogames is South Park. You can feel they know what they're talking about when it comes to videogames.
The best example I can think of is RDR2, they spend a whole episode referencing it here and there, talking about specific characters and specific locations. You cab definitely tell the creators were obsessed with it.
They also did an episode on Guitar hero, truly understanding the game while also parodying the game and people who play the game. One of my favorite episodes.
even the WoW episode wasn't really that far off from reality (though obviously a bit hyperbolic / leaning into stereotypes for the comedy) @@TheUnseenFuture

Honestly, that Amazing Race challenge is really funny. It’s not like the others where it’s a script that’s been poorly thought out, it’s live people who don’t play video games trying to beat a professional at Street Fighter.
It's kinda no different to have challengers to make a dish better than a professional chef or having them making better shots than an Olympian archer. I don't think the Amazing Race was making fun of esport players like what Alex is implying, but just having fun between amateurs and professionals.
the funniest part is that someone thought it was remotely possible, not only are those games a huge barrier for newcomers, but even among mid and high level players a top level player is an almost unbeatable challenge. average joe might be able to hit a ball thrown by a pro baseball player or land a punch on a pro boxer if they are lucky or try hard enough but there's just no way they could beat a top level pro at a fighting game, even blind folded and with one hand

@@ThomastheRiolpixQueen When I watch The Amazing Race, I get the feeling that they just give it to the contestants so they won't be there all day. That was definitely one of those times.
One part that wasn’t in this video that I wanted to honorably mention was a different scene in Breaking Bad where Badger and Skinny Pete rant about different types of zombie games and there was a surprising amount of info about it. It may not have been 100% accurate but I could picture it being a real conversation. They even included multiple games that were big at the time (Left 4 Dead, CoD Zombies). Them bringing up COD zombies when the mode was still young makes this feel like such a deep cut

One of the best actual implementations of video games in a movie or tv show is Time Splitters 2 in Shaun of the Dead. They actually played the game and the characters were doing actual game call outs of enemies.
Plus they call back to it later in the film!!
I've always wondered why they don't just do that. It's a lot easier to talk & play a game than to talk & pretend to play a game & it's seemingly a lot cheaper than doing pointless effects to make it look like people are playing a game.
@@D_YellowMadness
Because while gaming is indeed a growing hobby, it's not everyone's thing and so a lot of the time you just get gamers written by people who really don't really play videogames. Shaun of The Dead was headed by a pair of nerds though, so they actually tried there.
Hmmm.. when shaun joins the game it says player two has entered the game.. a thing that never happened in the game.. so yeah not really
Watching clips of sonic heroes being used in breaking bad literally made me do that one Leonardo DiCaprio meme where he snaps and points at the tv
Same with Brock and Angela playing Sega ASR. I miss them.
i'm glad we got the "mash every button because it is a tense game even though the sounds from the tv are just the loading screen" cliche out of the way within 2 minutes
I remember there was an episode of I think NCIS where someone had to beat level 10 of a game to get a clue to the whatever and nobody could do it until they spotted the Gamer(TM) miming using the controller while watching, and they got to level 10. on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Which has chapters but isn't separated into levels like that. Always made me laugh.
Oh god, crime dramas might actually be the worst offenders when it comes to portraying video games. I can't help but think of the infamous "they leveled up" line from Law and Order: SVU.
Why not just, look up a walkthrough, or read a strategy guide. That way you wouldnt have to waste your time playing a video game to get a clue.
There was the one episode where they get hacked and try to un-hack it faster by having two people using the same computer at the same time, all the while talking complete gibberish
This reminds me of when kingdom hearts 3 was on the news here in italy. There are actually also many anime shows that show irl video games like "Uncle from another world" having both Sonic and Golden Axe or "Tonikawa: Over the moon for you" focussing on Street Fighter 5 for an entire episode. And then there is also "High Score Girl" which is entirely themed around old irl arcade games.
Since video games are much more part of everyday culture throughout all age and societal groups in Japan, I'd imagine (knowing nothing about said anime) these are generally pretty well represented.
I remember there's a scene in Wotakoi where one of the characters is playing Monster Hunter XX on their Switch in a bar or something, and I was surprised to see that it was just straight up footage of the game. Oh my god, FINALLY! I've been waiting for someone to call out House on its "level 4" nonsense for so long! Of all the games they could have depicted, they chose a Metroid title when specifying a level. It's something that's annoyed me to this day haha
House being a metroid fan fits his character
@@ballisticboo7808 a fan or an amateur? Messing up in the very first room and calling in Level 4 is not what a fan would do.
@@unskilledgamer3642To be fair, sarcastically giving out wrong information IS a thing that character would do. Getting stuck in the first room, though . . .
Hearing Jason Griffith's Sonic on TV after Sonic X ended is the greatest blessing
My favorite is when a company tries to appeal to gamers by having them consume the product as beeps and boops come from the tv, because apparently we are all stuck in 1998
House loves being snarky to people that know less than him both in medicine and in gaming. It's not that he actually thought he was on Level 4 in Metroid- he just doesn't have time to explain the game to a non-alpha-male-gamer-supreme.
yeah, I can buy that House was just being a sarcastic ass.
I know Despicable Me is a MOVIE, but people seem to forget that one scene where Vector is sitting on his couch playing the Wii nowadays, and that is actually wrong.
And for the next episode of The Amazing Race, Hot Dog Eating contest vs the professionals. Good luck never getting past them because it's literally impossible!
_"It's just eating. How hard could it be?"_
Now, it's not a TV show, but I think one of the best implementations of people playing a video game in a movie, would be from Reign Over Me. It's an Adam Sandler movie where his character's family passed away in the 9/11 attacks, and an old friend played by Don Cheadle tries to help him get through it. It has a scene where Sandler's character teaches Cheadle's how to play Shadow of the Colossus, and it actually had no script for some parts of it, where he was just legitimately teaching him how to play the game. Even with the plot of the game, a tale of loss, and seeing giants fall, it was chosen as the game they play for how it would serve as a reminder to the character. Legitimately one of the most insightfully done video game oriented segments of a movie.
Thank you for reminding me. The name was on the tip of my tongue.
The one time I was extremely bothered by a video game being played in a movie was in The Smurfs. They were playing Guitar Hero Aerosmith. Niel Patrick Harris was on the guitar, and the Smurfs were playing on the drums. The screen was in single-player mode, and that game doesn't support the drum accessory. O think it was legitimately the last Guitar Hero game that didn't support it.
I will be forever grateful to X-Men 3: The Last Stand for giving Pitfall: The Lost Expedition two seconds of fame.
Some kids are playing it in the back of their parents car right before Magneto lifts the entire bridge into the air.
Great game
I've been watching the Sopranos lately too (great show btw, the brainrot makes me say "marone" a lot), and I loved the scene where Tony plays Mario Kart with AJ. How he holds the controller incorrectly but in a way that would probably make sense to him, a confused parent, felt intentional by the director.
It was so good that Nintendo even included Tony Soprano in Mario Kart Super Circuit.
the meaning conveyed by the scene is great, we get the intent behind it. but what he was seen doing and what was supposedly happening in the game still didn't line up. I don't think the average viewer of the sopranos would know or care but it's still a flaw worth pointing in a show often praised for realism. that's the point of the video, they didn't care about representing games in an authentic way enough to put any effort into it, only the COD office episode did
yeah, the n64 controller probably looks more confusing to non-gamers than normal modern controllers
@@sonic_enjoyer
It still confuses actual gamers to this day. Loads of people who never actually touched it shit talk it and presume you need three hands to play, when the controller is just meant to be held multiple different ways depending on the game.
@@Rad-Dude63andathird yeah! pretty innovative but kinda confusing

You know what sucks about the The Amazing Race example? It's a reality TV competition.
Meaning everyone who looks like they suck at Street Fighter... actually sucks at Street Fighter.
Like, you could have at least coached them for 5 minutes, tops. It's humiliating.
"what do you mean you need coaching to play fighting games? nah you just push all of the buttons and win" -- the producers
15:30 I love a good DBZ reference specifically having Frieza apply the strangest and most specific of tallents.
My favorite scene of gaming in media also happens to be from a movie from my favorite director, Shaun of the Dead directed by Edgar Wright. Not only is there a scene with Shaun backseat gaming, but you literally hear Nick Frost’s character Ed pause twice in preparation for his dialogue!
Oh yeah! TimeSplitters 2.
John Goodman playing the Sega Hedgehog game on a Super Nintendo with Mario music and Gallica graphics and heart-stabbing gameplay was not something I was ready to see
to be fair, they only compared the game to "Sega, the hedgehog" when trying to explian the gameplay, which honestly sounds like how ignorant parents would talk about their kid's games.
The sopranos had more simple symbolism. You saw Tony covering AJs eyes in order to win. He’s willing to do anything to get to the top
Just like how the producers used any sound they could from Mario kart 64

Remember when Dark Souls was featured in Dragon Maid? I remember.
I know it wasn't covered, but there have been several times video games have been involved in The Big Bang Theory show. I remember there being a Wii Sports boxing match and of course Sheldon debating on whether or not to get the Xbox One or PS4.
Or that time Sheldon emulated Mario 64 on his laptop.
Please take me out for possessing that knowledge. _(passes you a gun)_
@gameman250 Legit? Does he call it emulation or is it just impiedad?

Dunno the episode, but the clip I found is something along the lines of "Sheldon Plays Mario" and it isn't stated that he's emulating in the clip, but he does name drop Mario aside from the sound effects and him slamming the space bar while telling Mario to "jump jump jump!", so to anyone who knows Nintendo doesn't really do PC games anymore, you'd get the hint.
There's a scene in one of the Spy Kids movies that's reminiscent of that House + ZM clip. In order to showcase how good the character is at video games, one of them mentions how they got to "Level 9 in Metroid" or something like that. No footage is shown though, unfortunately.

I can't get enough of this stuff. If I ever somehow end up making a show or movie with a game in it, I'm throwing in as many inaccuracies as I can. Right down to a kid having a virtual boy taped to his face when he's not even the one playing.
I legitimately want to play some of these very wrong games. I always liked the videogame mockup animation from an old Consumers Power commercial.

What's really interesting to me is when shows and films feature more niche games in the background, usually by complete accident. It's not something most people would notice, but it definitely makes a scene more memorable from a modern perspective compared to the usual "rebellious teen plays loud and violent Xbox 360 FPS in his room with a "Do Not Enter" sign on the door."
12:39 the ironic thing is there is a metroid game that has levels and is on gba... And they chose zero mission which is the most open one in the franchise. One instance that really made me mad was in The Big Bang Theory. They have an episode where they're playing Halo 3 and they talk on and on about all of the mutilation and large amounts of blood. If you've even played a little bit of Halo 3, you would know that the game has only a little bit of blood, which can easily be missed, and there's no mutilation to speak of. I didn't mind it at first, but what was really annoying was that they make like 6-7 jokes about it, but again, not a big deal. I think what annoyed me the most though, was that someone at Fox must have really have loved that episode, because they played it like ten times more than any other episode I've seen. I haven't watched a lot of Big Bang Theory, but a big reason I haven't was due to them incessantly playing that episode.
Nothing hits more than Seeing Jessie Pinkman playing Sonic 06.

Adam Sandler's character saw his son playing The Last of Us, and criticised modern games for having enemies that "dont have patterns" like enemies in old games did- patterns you would memorize to overcome the enemies (a point i disagree with, I'd argue modern games have better enemy design, and even if they dont use repeating attack patterns all the time you can still learn their behaviors and I'd argue this allows for more varied and engaging enemies but i digress, this isnt my main issue)
which would be fine, except the enemy he pointed out as an example was a bloater, which is the ONLY enemy in TLoU to attack in a fucking pattern
they literally could have had him point to ANY other enemy in the game, and it the example would have worked
but no, he points to the ONE enemy that its not true for
Wow. Adam Sandler is know nothing about modern game!
There's a scene in this Belgian film called "The Kid with a Bike," where a teenager is showing a kid how to play Assassin's Creed and it feels completely natural. You can't see the screen, but it's clear they're playing the actual game and talking like how real people would playing it.
Everybody who's seen a TV show from 1985 through about 2005 or so knows that even the latest and greatest game has that Commodore-era "doodle-oodle-OO-doot! Blip blip blip blip..." sound.

If I ever make a television series I'm gonna have a scene that involves the main character playing Persona 4 Golden. The first shot on the television you see the beginning of the game and later on you get another shot against a boss thats 50 hours into the game. Later during a shot where it's looking at the characters I'll have a the following sound effects play: Sonic losing rings, the Doom shotgun, Cappy capturing an enemy from Super Mario Odyssey, the FNaF door closing sound effect, Kricketune's cry from Pokemon, and the sound effect in the Google Chrome Dino game when you reach 100 points. Finally at the very end the main character will say they got stabbed by a skeleton, they'll hit the reset button on the GameCube, and the game will suddenly switch to the Deltarune battle against Lancer.
At the screening of the Tetris movie, when the main character said the phrase: "Mario has Luigi, Link has Zelda", for some reason they decided to show the gameplay of Minish Cap, although the events of the game were before the release of the first gameboy
this effect is like the incorrectly-modeled pianos in games where there's a creation tool of sorts (roblox, rec room, minecraft even), even *THE* QUEST 3 FACEBOOK TEAM made a screwed up pug equivalent of a piano in a virtual environment/home menu. i genuinely die a little bit when i think about that
Imagine having such severe skill issue that when you start playing a game, it quickly changes to another one and you die in it, all while you haven't pressed a single button.
Or that you die in the title screen of a game in which you can't die in the title screen
I gotta say disappointed you didn't cover the GOAT, Clarissa Explains It All. Not only did she "play" a video game every episode, every video game she "made" herself that day in order to solve a problem in her real life.
Don't know if he mentions these two in the video, because I'm not even half way through the video yet but I have to mention them. There a Spanish drama show, I forget the name of it but they have the pause screen from an XBox game called Phantom Dust. TH-camr Nick Robinson made a video about it. And I show I love called Angel (its the spinoff of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has a seen in the 5th season where they play Crash Bandicoot! No gameplay is shown but sound effects from the game can be heard if I remember correctly. Been half a year since I saw the episode so I may be misremembering certain details but I am very certain Amy Acker's character is the one playing the game
So that's how Tony Soprano got into Super Circuit.
