as much as i agree it is that good and captures the spirit of bats perfectly, it does sound a lot like an older batman score by I think Danny Elfman (obviously reinvented for this movie)
@@JonathanRodriguez-nz9nw Apparently the Danny Elfman theme was so iconic that they re-used it for the Animated Series, over the years they'd tweak it more and more until the show had a theme of its own.
Would make sense too as many view the Arkham series as an un-official continuation of the DCAU Batman when in regards to the look and feel and the same voice cast being used.
My mother bought me the Mask of Phatasm vhs when I was roughly 6 years old, admittedly I had no idea what was going on in the movie I was just happy to see batman on my TV. But now several years later and the fact that I now understand the story makes me appreciate this movie so much more. And even today at 23 years of age listening to the opening score still sends chills up my spine
At first, you'd think the choir is singing in Latin--a Gregorian chant, or something very much like one--Nope! They're singing the names of the "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" production crew backwards! Genius, clever and cute all at the same time!
It's a fantastic instrument to use to instil a sense of dread and fear in the listener, it has that otherworldly sound etched in it's notes, so to speak. It's a wonderful instrument.
Oh, my, that music from 2:00 to 3;46 is just perfection, every time I hear it. It amazes me that this woman made these masterful scores of such power for what at the time would've be considered another 'dumb kids cartoon' pre-release; you hardly see this memorable music in modern film and I'm glad she left her mark on Batman
I honestly don't know how but every single time I hear this theme, I get chills from the bottom of my heels to the tips of my hair. This is what Batman is. It's epic, bombastic, emotional, and most of all: badass. Shirley Walker was one of greatest composers I've ever heard. After passing away in 2006, due to complications after having a stroke, her legacy became one less known to the majority of people and sadly still is. She didn't leave much behind, in terms of cinema, but she will always be known for creating one of the best cartoon themes of all time and realizing the full epicness of what The Dark Knight stood for.
Shirley Walker is a genius, this is one of the most iconic and epic Batman themes I ever heard alongside the original Animated Series theme and the Arkham theme.
When those lyrics come in, pure goosebumps. I cannot express how amazing this piece of work is. Shirley Walker was truly one of the best composers of all time.
here's a life long dreamer of making animated TV and film and I knew right off the bat Shirley Walker is the person I dreamed to compose for my work.... but... fate has different plans. God bless you Ms. Walker. you were an unsung talent that was apart of a cultural icon and many childhoods. even if we didn't know or care about you at that age your impact was felt. thank you. you may rest now...
The reason this so good is because it brings back so many memories to all of us when we was kids now this song just reminds of batman gliding to the helicopter. great scene but joker laughing athe end just makes me smile.
Very nice! But you left out one of the best parts - the music cue when Andrea leaves the note for Bruce & then it shows Bruce and Alfred in the cave. Bruce holds out his hand and Alfred gives him the mask. Batman is born and the music comes in strong as Alfred looks back in awe and horror at his master's dark transformation.
I love Elfman's scores, but the truth is, Shirley is a big part of who he is today. She mentored him and anything you hear in this that sounds like his music is because his music sounds a lot like hers.
It's Shirley Walker's Batman theme. Enhanced with some choral work. One of my all time favorites. :) There's a non-choral theme Walker did for the TV series available.
This is simply the best and most haunting Batman music score there is... Yes, I love Hans Zimmer's Batman Begins score. But this score by Shirley Walker is really really good.
People making toons nowadays for kids, take note...THESE were the shows that MADE a kids childhood. Even if it was only for 20 mins every morning/saturday.
The Animated Series was my first exposure to Batman so I'll always be a homer for this canon of Batman. But what makes it my favorite is I find it has the most powerful music of all the canons I've seen.
Shirley Walker wasn't just a composer but an arranger extraordinaire. A marvelously magnificent musical mastermind with exceptional abilities for symphonic wonders of dynamic excellence. She left us too soon but will always be recognized and remembered for her magical works of art.
You're right. I worded that very poorly. She filled in the blanks where Elfman hadn't written anything...and she was properly credited at the end of film where this was the case.
For one, Hush it's an actual comic book character. The Phantasm is an original character that only works inside the DCCU. It's actually based almost 100% on a character named "The Reaper", who appeared on "Batman: Year Two".
+Aquin And what about Harley?...She was created only for the Animated Series, so? What's your point? Andrea could appear and she "kinda" does in the Origins game with a letter that she wrote for Bruce, I think it appears in the Batcave...she appeared in the Batman Beyond comics, and appeared in the Justice League ending, where it's known that Terry it's a clone of Bruce. Also, Arkham had a great diversity of Batman characters, Azrael even made a cameo...so, the Phantasm would have made a great cameo even so.
Again, not the same. Some characters from BTAS work because they were later introduced to the mainstream continuity. The Phantasm never was introduced, becuase we already had The Reaper.
I don't think so. If that were the case Timm and Dini would have had to pay royalties to Elfman every time they used his score over the end credits in the show.
I played this to someone who had never watched batman tas and I asked them who's theme it was. They said batman's
that's how good it is...
+Novembre Pleut It´s like a song inspired movie. You have those tipicall sounds and harmonies.
...did you wear a batman shirt or talked about batman continously ?

That's how integral of a part Batman: The Animated Series has become of the Batman legacy. Simply iconic.
I wish Shirley Walker's score was in the Arkham game.
That would be awesome!
To be fair, Nick Arundel and Ron Fish did WORK in the Arkham series
@@sterlingwilliams8645 Agreed!

@@themadtitan7603 It's definitely canon...Based on the comic books. Odd choice of some of those bosses, though. Pyg is kind of annoying.

R.I.P Shirley Walker
Walker did everything Elfman and Zimmer did for the character, except she did it every week. We miss you Shirley!

Love that she incorporates a theremin, an instrument rarely used in modern scores.

This is batman's one and only theme
The 89’ Batman theme
I now disagree, that goes to Giacchino's score who perfectly captured Batman and Bruce Wayne in his score
Her music elevated this to something really special. Love to see a live action movie based on the designs and look of this animated series.

Influenced by "Fountains of Rome: The Trevi Fountain at Noon" (composer Ottorino Respighi).
Brings a warm feeling to my heart.
I have seen this in theaters twice, once when it first came out and one for the anniversary. I will see it again if I have the chance.

Amazing music, fantastic suite! Thanks!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure it would WB paying royalties to Elfman or whatever if royalties were being paid.

Unbelievable

:') Miss being a kid.
That's the wonderful thing about this theme, it's more of an extension to Elfmans work than a new theme.
o man I wish I know the name of the particular tune in the beginning I know it comes on throught the series
listen till the end.. U'll be rewarded
I'M STILL PISSED THAT THE PHANTASM DOESN'T APPEAR IN THE ARKHAM GAMES!

@CYBERDOODY what about him?
Did Walker have to pay royalties to Elfman? There are hints of Elfman's score in here.

@MrHEC381991 He made the most Batmanlike theme of all
Sounds... not unlike the Arkham City theme. 'Specially the beginning.
For some reason, he has larger calves than thighs.
