    As always a brilliant on the road video by you and Tobi, Louisa. Unfortunately I'm getting over a stroke with rehab keeping me anchored and well away from my bike and bush cooking, but your videos are extremely inspirational for me to keep pushing to rid my body of this rubbish and back to health again. Stats are 1 in 6 people world wide will suffer some from of stroke. For me life long non-drinker, non smoker, vegetarian, no drugs whatsoever, 70, 1.8m, 71Kg and fit (daily biking) yet I still had a stroke. The doctors said ?????. Probably just a case of bad luck, or the wrong place at the wrong time. A simple recipe you may like. Curried Bananas. In your Trangia frying pan lid, melt some butter, Ghee, or Olive Oil, then fry half a chopped onion, then add 3 or 4 whole Bananas sliced length ways. add Curry Powder to taste, add 1/2 to 1 mug of water, Salt to taste. A good helping of Apricot, Strawberry or Raspberry jam, half a palm of Black or Golden Raisins. Cashews (ours are grown locally) or other nuts go well in this dish too. Serve with boiled rice. Enjoy.🤪🤪🤭👌💪

      Thanks for the recipe, that sounds really good! We’ll have to try it some time. 😊
      Sorry to hear about the stroke, we hope you recover quickly and can get back outdoors soon! 😊

    You are 100 % correct about cooking saving a lot of money. This summer was the first summer I did any credit card touring. I spent a average of $4000.00 a month on food in restaurants and motels . Total for a 71 day trans am was almost $9000.00

    Hi!!!! I started following your channel and I really liked the tips, etc. Now I really became a fan of this couple to see that you also make vegetarian food!!!!! I live in the extreme south of Brazil... I'm 50 years old now and have been a vegetarian for 35... and I've always thought about traveling by bicycle through South America. I've always been a cyclist, even a competitive one... now I'm planning this trip for the next few months, and feeling even more motivated watching your videos!!!!! Who knows, maybe one day we'll meet on the road! Huge hug and thank you!!!!!

      @@louisaandtobi I always thought that it wasn't vegan friendly to cook outdoors because of the environmental concerns of burning fuels. My vegan neighbors have confronted me about that issue several times. My wife and I want to be good neighbors so we stopped cooking outdoors and we cook and eat indoors.

    Interesting video (as usual❤)
    My daily routine during cycling tours is oats in the morning and spaghetti/couscous in the evening.
    I cold soak the oats in water ( milk if I can get it in 25cl) and add cinnamon, mixture of nuts (not salted, not grilled), and halve an apple cut in small pieces. The other halve I eat while preparing. Then I boil water and make coffee. During that time, the oats will be ready to eat.
    In the evening it’s spaghetti time. Boil in water together with fresh vegetables (shallot, carrot, aubergine, paprika…whatever I can get) and I add a cube of bouillon and at the end squeeze some tomato concentrate from a tube (if I can get it). The water left after eating the spaghetti is like a soup. Delicious. One problem: it consumes a lot of gas. To save on gas (and water) I also may prepare couscous. Then I would add raisins, olives, and fish in tomato sauce (usually mackerel or tuna).

    Good examples of traditional cooking across cultures. Collectively this type of meal planning is called "Throw in what you got in the pot." The main meal always includes a Grain such as wheat, rice and always a legume such as peas, beans, lentils. local Fruit and vegetables. I like to include a little fish, chicken pork, beef, sausage, eggs and spices. Examples from around the world include. Thanks for sharing you recipes! I cook similarly on the road. An idea for breakfast: let your oats soak overnight, making "overnight oats". I use a little food container for this, but you could also use a pot.

    These are delicious recipes, I would even eat these at home. My next cycling tour I am definitely going to take cooking gear and cook every day, it is so much nicer and healthier than eating in restaurants or junkfood all the time. I always find it challenging to eat vegetarian or vegan on the road, but I wish I could. The solution is to cook yourself I guess. Also, I imagine you have much more flexibility of where you travel and sleep, because you do not have to stop in a town where they have a restaurant. Also I think it is fun to shop for the local food.

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, finding veggie / vegan options on the road in restaurants is tough, cooking it is much easier. Also easier than cooking meat as meat it difficult to transport fresh.
      And like you said, you can take more remote routes / camp more remote as you don’t need to be close to restaurants.

    Another great video thanks. You listed the ingredients in your spice mix, but I could not clearly hear. I heard pepper and galic, but could not hear the last ingredient. What is it please?
    You mentioned making oatmeal with cold water. I cold soak my oats overnight in an old peanut butter jar, including the dried fruit. I add fresh fruit in the morning, if I have it. You could also add granola in the morning for the crunch. I tend not to use sugar in the oats.Soaking overnight seems to make them taste better anyway.
    How I cold soak my oats: I tend not to use sugar in the oats. Soaking overnight seems to make them taste better anyway. If I want sweetness I might use cinnamon, which is also much lighter to carry than sugar.
    I eat cold soak oats everyday, even when not travelling. My base recipe per serving is ¼ cup oats, two scoops protein/whey powder, 1-2 tablespoons chia seeds, milk/water.
    To this I add some of the following (not all at once) to make things more interesting:
    - Peanut butter
    - Jam
    - Dried fruit (I mix raisins, cranberries, and wolf berry/goji)
    - Chopped fresh fruits (1/2 a banana is great with cinnamon and nutmeg)
    - ¼ tsp cinnamon pinch of ground nutmeg
    - Coco powder (apparently you still get the chocolate boost from this)
    - Dried coconut flakes
    - coconut powder
    - 1-2 tablespoon of wheat germ
    Thanks again for your recipe ideas.

      Thank you! 😊 The last ingredient is simply salt. It’s not a very exotic spice mix, just something that we found here.

    That's what I love about the Trangia system, you can actually do real cooking and not just warm up ready meals. It's absolutely worth carrying the additional weight imo.

    • @bartmullin8018
      @bartmullin8018 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great system unless you live and hike or bikepack anywhere on the West Coast of the U.S. Trangia or wood-burning stoves are banned on the West Coast as are campfires. There have been too many mega-wildfires in recent years and in careless hands, more wildfires would be sparked. You can't control the flame and some consider the fuel toxic so, one has to carry an isobutane pressurized canister system.
      (Isobutane one-use cannisters are under threat in California too; i get their point but, potential bans without a viable alternative up front is b.s.)

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice idea, although we usually don’t carry sauce. The sauces we make usually come from the water from the veggies and fruits we put in them and wouldn’t be enough to boil noodles. When we cook noodles most of the time there is no excess water left over, and if there is, we put it in the sauce. Maybe your idea would work with thinner instant noodles.

    For travels, i have three rules. Only tropical countries, no work and no cooking. I eat a good meal once a day, the supper. Fruits during the day. But i m far from spending as much energy as you are. For supper, there s street food every where and if it s good for the locals, it s good for me. Smoking two or three cigarettes while waiting for the meal to be served is really nice plus a good occasion to encounter some locals. I got sick only once, at the border between Myanmar and Thailand. I stayed in my room, on Thai border side, for 2 days. It s a bit scary to be sick alone in the middle of nowhere !
