Perhaps I can help your palate. Most radio, TV and now internet shows have stock pieces pre written on subjects that are predictably closing in on the end of their lives. These "obits" are generally written in the past tense and then set aside. When that individual dies, all that is needed is the filed segment. Maybe doctor a fact or two. It's a standard practice. A man like Pete Rose, whose life was rich in stories was an easy tale awaiting airing. He was a character.

It isn't as simple as betting on his own team winning. He could have been betting on winning by more than 2.5 runs. Maybe he's making decisions to reach 3+ runs that jeopardize the team from simply being up 1 run and winning the game. Maybe for the games he is betting on, he stacks the roster more than usual - maybe he brings in another starter to finish that game so it secures his wager... but then that pitcher has to pitch on short rest in a game Rose didn't bet on.
People that can affect the outcome of the game have no business being able to bet on that same game. That includes Pete Rose. And I know it is hard to separate all of the gambling ads that show up in MLB these days - but they are a business. And they aren't encouraging the players/managers/owners to gamble. That is helping to pay all of their salaries instead.

Since 1920 every clubhouse in baseball has a sign reading: "Gambling on baseball is forbidden." He gambled on baseball as a manager and probably as a player. He got caught and then he lied about it. Now he admits it and watching this, apparently has no remorse about it. Arrogant about it, in fact.
Lifetime ban, absolutely. There's an excellent reason: gambling corrupts the game. Go look up Black Sox Eddie Cicotte and Chick Gandel. They're banned too.

Letterman's asinine question to Pete Rose on whether he would have considered taking steroids if someone came to him and said if we are careful with this and managed it thoughtfully, it can help prolong your career and help you recover from injuries and might improve your performance with NO health risks involved. What a senseless question since there is nothing on the planet that can do all of that. MLB didn't bet on the games. Pete did. All he had to do was not do that. In fact, all he had to do was stop. In fact, all he had to do was accept the deal before the investigation started. In fact, all he had to do was not lie about it for years. In fact, all he had to do was give a sincere apology. In fact, all he had to do was change his ways. In fact, it's Pete's own fault that he's not in. No one elses. Never forget that.

@@roland7584 Yes, Rose bet - Own worst enemy. Got that, and so did he. 2nd part, overplayed No-brainer, to include the lying, the help, Etc.
The sincere apology? If you mean, hang himself in the middle of Fountain Square or Times Square, No. Rose apologized countless times, but if that means go away, become a Monk, and live in abject poverty, No. A crying jar scene -- Rose actually did show a lot of emotion one night in front of an audience who came to see him.
Change his ways? Rose stopped doing much public gambling for a few years, stayed away for Cooperstown 2-3 years at least, trying to give MLB a chance, and offered to do other things. God forbid he sold a book because he has no other income except his name for autographs and his story. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
So, after 2-3 years of Selig, Et. Al., ignoring Rose yet again, Etc., Rose returned to Cooperstown and more, convinced he wasn't going to be heard, get another shot.
Yes, Betting on MLB is Rose's own fault. NEVER Forget that??? IS THAT A JOKE??? SINCE WHEN IS A ROSE/ REDS FAN ALLOWED TO DO SO???
Bow Down to MLB Almighty and open Y'all's hymn books to "Glory From Kenesaw Mountain Landis to Bart Giamatti," and please ignore the decades of racism and hypocrisy..., We Thank You.
Oh yes... Let's overlook that little rule made in Feb 1991 -- Just in time - to keep the press from ever having a say on whether or not Rose deserved on being voted in as a Member of Baseball's HOF.
Just timing, the HOF Board member's Ed Stack said, at the time, but the Media dubbed the Rule, the Pete Rose Rule, keeping all Permanently Ineligible Ballplayers out of consideration by Baseball Writers for the HOF. Just timing that Rose would be considered that December. Just a little... LIE by the Board, but it's a lie for the Greater Good.
It's all PETE ROSE'S Fault -- No. One. Else's. Yessir, Boss! I will NEVER Forget That.
I'll also Never Forget good old Ken Burns, who was good at smearing Ty Cobb with Al Stump's LIES, Uh, I mean, Biographies after his death. Gotta like Ken Burns' sense of justice - He's a good as forgiveness as MLB & the ever-honest Baseball Hall of Fame. Said this back in 2010:
Pete Rose should be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame, said filmmaker Ken Burns Wednesday afternoon at the semiannual TV press tour in Beverly Hills. But the documentarian had a single caveat.
‘He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame,’ said Burns of the former player and coach (Manager) with the Cincinnati Reds whose gambling scandal has prevented his enshrinement at Cooperstown. ‘But he doesn’t deserve to know he’s in the Hall of Fame.’
      * Speaking for myself, I know a lot of Rose fans who would like to see that happen, though it would be very awkward. My understanding is also that the Rose Family is pretty much of the opinion that the HOF can stick their plaque where the sun doesn't shine.
