I always thought Norm was simply emotional as he closed out Letterman because he was realizing all Dave had done for him after he lost his job, kick-started his career, etc. But to know that he had cancer at this time, was likely reflecting on his life and truly, because of his great love for standup and Dave as a friend, now I appreciate even more how legendary this closing standup was. Doesnt matter how many times i see that last clip of Norm getting emotional on Letterman, it always makes my eyes well up. The world needs a Norm more than every right now, miss you big guy 😥❤️❤️❤️
I rewatched this after finding out that Norm died today. During that final segment where Norm is holding back his tears... it really got to me. I started crying for a complete stranger who felt like an old friend, a man who felt so familiar to me after all those years I watched his work, every Saturday he was on SNL and beyond. My heart goes out to his family and friends and to us fans, because this is such a loss. Norm made the world a better place, truly, with his gift for making us laugh and making someone feel less alone and depressed, if even for a moment. I still can't believe he's gone. I don't want to believe it. Thanks for all the laughter and good memories, Norm. We will miss you so much. With love, your fans.
I'm embarrassed to say this, but I never really knew much about Norm Macdonald until he passed. I'd seen some videos of him interviewing people, but that was pretty much it. Just out of curiosity, I watched a clip of him on Conan the other day. Since then, I've been truly hooked in a way that I've never been with a comedian - watching Norm Macdonald Live, watching his talk show appearances, his stand up. I've been laughing out loud for days, actually laughing out loud. It made me realize how rare that is, to have your day brightened so much by a person you've never met. His jokes have been stuck in my head, and I've been annoyingly showing them to other people who haven't heard them. I know what you mean when you say he feels like a friend. That's a real guy. I cried at the end of this video. The man had a big heart. Rest in peace.
Green - that was beautiful. Not since Robin Williams has the sadness lasted so long. Just different. Davon - it's never too late. I knew of Norm also bc of Conan and Dave. His SNL stint was a little before my time. Through the Quarantine as I started watching more of just comedians to try to cheer myself up I rediscovered Norm, Spade, Sandler, Rock. They are all hilarious. The clip with Norm and Gordon Ramsey on is probably my favorite besides the pig story 😅🤣. ✌
Does anyone else sense that Norm is one of few celebrities to be celebrated before his death? All of the late night compilations existed before he passed. There are so many videos of other comedians discussing Norm’s ability to tell stories and jokes. All of this celebration existed before his passing, and it makes me happy to know we realized how lucky we were even before the end. He’s one of few discussed as a staple in comedy, while still alive. Usually, society deems someone a genius only after they pass away. Idk just seems cool
Honestly I think a lot of people knew at it was kept well under wrap. I don't feel great speculating but I've been binging Norm videos online and I had the same 'sense' that you did (especially on this Joe Rogan episode where he interview Adam Eget). Regardless, people definitely knew something was up but it was never widely mentioned.
Norm, as a kid, saw Dave do stand-up, and Dave's been his hero ever since .... what he didn't realize until recently is that Dave admires him and looks up to him as a comedic genius even moreso than the other way around .... a mutual utmost respect and reverence ..... it's an amazing genuine thing in a showbiz world of massive phoniness and gimmicks
That last appearance, one of the most real human moments I've ever seen on TV. The guy who's always yanking everybody's chain, seen here as his truest and most honest self. 😭😭😭
I'm forever grateful we have that clip to always remember who the real Norm was, a man with an incredible heart, true passion for comedy, and ungodly funny. He's the goat
Loved him since I was probably 11 or 12. Every now and then I test myself to see if I can watch that moment without tearing up a little. I just failed again, but next time, in order to distract myself from seeing Norm coming to terms with the emotional weight of the situation, I plan to try it while being stabbed by O.J.
I cry everytime I watch the end of his standup lol. Dave supported Norm so much through his career. Really one of the most special moments in TV history and I watched it live, too.
I still remember watching this live, and it caught me totally off guard. He gathers himself together at the end to tell his favoriteDave joke , and then professes his love for his hero. It was as genuine a moment in television history as you can have. RIP Norm, gonna miss you truly.
There's also something about the way he says "I loved stand up" that tells you just how deeply he loved and lived for the art. Also, if Letterman kicked started your furnace of ambition and you end up as the comic on his final shows then that's going to be emotional in the extreme.
I just saw all 5 parts. In the beginning Norm was just a very funny young stand up. Then on the first sit down segment in 1995 you can see how Letterman is starting to really like this guy. On later appearances you can see he is genuinely happy to see him, all the way to the very moving last show. What a great story! Thank you so much, Don Giller!

Dave seems genuinely enamored with Norm and that’s awesome because I almost get the sense that getting Dave’s approval is all the validation of success that Norm ever needed.

That final one made me cry. Never have I seen Norm not just be funny and make light of things. It was so jarring to see him turn into an emotional person over his close freind. Man he was a good guy.
The Germany joke is one that I shared a thousand times that spoke of the brilliance of Norm. Dave had a nice send off the last few weeks he was on the air and Norm was on one of his last shows. A testament to what Norm meant to Dave. Two comic geniuses captured wonderfully by Don (Oh Don!!!). Norm is a wonderfully sweet soul. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Don Giller.... I watched all 5 of your Norm Macdonald with David Letterman series. Not only did I learn about Norm, but also Dave. His tears on his last show with Dave were real... watching this after Norm's passing, knowing that he did this show (and quite a few others) knowing that he was battling cancer is extremely moving. Time to watch Dirty Work today, and find a collection of Norm's appearances on Conan... those two also had amazing chemistry... but I really enjoyed watching his friendship with Dave grow over time. 23:51 This sequence epitomizes why talk show hosts loved Norm. He was an artist in his ability to both understand the role of the host, and find ways to undermine the role of the host, while still keeping a meaningful arc to the entire bit. Dave's laugh after Norm's response is so genuine, and he is forced to keep it together and keep the bit going... in order to fulfill his role as host.
I think you're reading way too much into it. It simply is as it appears. Norm genuinely forgot it was his old bit and instead came up with crystal meth on the spot, and Dave laughed at both of those things. You can tell by Norms reaction that he genuinely forgot.

Good comment I feel better after reading it.

A real meeting of the minds here
Norm, as a kid, saw Dave do stand-up, and Dave's been his hero ever since .... what he didn't realize until recently is that Dave admires him and looks up to him as a comedic genius even moreso than the other way around .... a mutual utmost respect and reverence ..... it's an amazing genuine thing in a showbiz world of massive phoniness and gimmicks
On top that, Dave allowed Norm to close the show. Amazing. I still well up every time I watch that segment.

Yes it's very emotional everytime I watch it. Norm was such a good man.

23:51 This sequence epitomizes why talk show hosts loved Norm. He was an artist in his ability to both understand the role of the host, and find ways to undermine the role of the host, while still keeping a meaningful arc to the entire bit. Man, my dad would watch David Letterman so often whilst I was growing up, I was too young to appreciate Norm at the time but I knew my pops thought he was the funniest. I only really got into Norm at the start of this quarantine thing 2 years ago and it was a blessing. The thought of Norm up in heaven(or whatever) doing standup and my dad laughing his ass off in the angel audience makes my heart feel heavy, yet immensely happy.
Nothing makes me happier than Norm and I can’t exactly explain why. Thank you for this compilation!
I’m so grateful for this collection, especially now, so thank you! So hard to believe he’s gone. Norm was/is/always will be a comedic legend. He was also a super sweet guy with a beautiful soul. I love his & Dave’s relationship - they had real love & affection for each other, and you can clearly see how much Dave & his support meant to Norm. His last appearance was so touching. He will really be missed!
Norm was trying to keep it together and keep making jokes when the audience wouldn't stop cheering for him but you could tell he was on the verge of tears.
Yeah, okay Mr. Dictionary.
@@thebrazilianatlantis165 which of OPs words is too big? Verge?

@Joe Sonic Mr. Dictionary with the correct spelling of the word "tears."
Norm. What a beautiful soul.

I'm going to say that (or versions of it) for the rest of my life!
What a world where that's not a somewhat controversial statement 😅

He was a real jerk.
Oh god the depression kicked in when that voice said stay tuned for James Corden in the end of the video.
Thanks you so much for these five incredible collections of videos with in my opinion the greatest comedian ever together with the best talk-show host ever👍👏👏
could have been worse, he could have said Jimmy Fallon
not being from the us, I get confused as to what host is on what channel. Corden took over from Craig Ferguson, or was it Fallon?
@@davidlean1060 Fallon took over from Leno, Corden took over from Craig, dumbest Late night decision ever
