Really good guide. This route really has been the gold standard since like 2016. Of course, there are even crazier routes now, but this is a solid point for anyone to build off of.
I don't speedrun the game (for now), but I'm loving these videos. It helps make a lot of the speedruns make more sense. As someone who "casually" beats the game at least once for the last 20 years, I didn't know some of these interactions and it makes the game more new again to learn about them.
Word of warning for the rail seen at 7:58: If you happen to be travelling at a fast enough speed (usually by spindashing onto the rail beforehand) and attempt to jump off it at any time, the game _will_ crash - might wanna pin this
From what I recall the reason is if you spindash the game still believes you are on the snake head not the rail so if you go far enough that it despawns and you jump the game crashes.
Thank you so much for the pointer! It drove me crazy wondering why my game crashed there. I rarely superbounce through the wall, so I would spindash to gain speed on that rail and it would crash
while i wont be speedrunning this game, some of these pseudobounce setups that you show as alternatives to the fastest strats are definitely appealing to learn for even normal playthroughs! small tangent, funnily enough, the stages in this game i tend to struggle most on (in my casual experience) are the speed stages, because a lot of stuff can be fast to react to, and the finnicky nature of some of the manuvers and the wild tangents you can fly off on if you're on the wrong piece of geometry when you're going fast. i tend to actually prefer the treasure hunting stages in SA2 because of my affinity for exploration in games
Yeah they're really simple and just fun to mess around with! I personally just do psuedo bounces just because of how satisfying they are! Also I love the treasure hunting stages as well! Really fun for sure!
I was trying to do the first door skip where you practise the super bounce at 1:20 but I ended up just fully clipping through the door while keeping my speed? Lmao, I don't know how that happened but it seemed pretty fast I clipped when it happened in case I accidently found something by mistake
Mind you, it's probably not that much faster than the bounce and probably already known I just confused myself when I done it, wrong working right answer moment
Oh yes this is a known thing but very very difficult to replicate (which is why I don’t mention it in the video), it’s quite a bit faster than super bouncing over if done properly. Congrats on getting that! Also best of luck on your super bounce practice!
I can do pretty much everything in this fairly easily except the major door skip (I can do this but not even remotely consistently) and the snake skip (same as door skip, can do it maybe like 1 in 20 times...) I don't get what I'm doing wrong. I can't tell what I do different the times I do get it vs the many times I don't. There's got to be something you're not mentioning about how to get this consistently because after hours of practicing these 2 skips nonstop with save states, it just feels like straight up RNG...
Okay I figured out the snake jump thing. Still not super consistent at it but I get what I do wrong now when I don't get it. The major door clip thing is still RNG though. I've gotten more consistent at it but still impossible to get it first or second try without basically luck.

this was the first stage i learned to speedrun (in any game) and its easily my favorite...something about the route is just too fun to learn
I remember hating it for a time but I've really come to love it, there's a ton of fun things you can do in it that make it so enjoyable!
Trying just for A ranks and need the extra tech but man is this such a beautiful speedrunning game
