  • Note: I misspoke at 25:46 regarding Super Mario World's release. It was 1990, not 1999.
    It's been 35 long years since Super Mario Bros. first released to the world. Whether you're new to side-scrolling platform games or are a long-time fan, this documentary shows a retrospective look at Super Mario Bros. for its 35th Anniversary.
    Table of Contents
    I - Intro | 0:00
    II - The Golden Age | 2:37
    III - The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins With One Jump | 5:24
    IV - Early Prototypes | 10:06
    V - Super Mario Design | 15:04
    VI - Memory Limitations | 19:39
    VII - Release | 21:51
    VIII - Legacy | 24:46
    This documentary's purpose is to take a look back at one of gaming's all-time classic side-scrollers, Super Mario Bros., originally for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I take a dive into its development, give a summary on its story and attempt to explain how Super Mario Bros has impacted gaming since its release 35 years ago.

    It's amazing how well the 1985 SMB game has held up. It's just as fun to play today 38 years later. The visuals, sound, music and gameplay have a certain timeless charm about it

      Super Mario Bros was a huge hit in Bulgaria as well but we played it later arroung 90s , maybe because i was very little and i didn't know that the game was out.

    7:45 the original super Mario bros had to fit in a 40kb rom cart. The later mario games used bank switching to add more space, without bank switching, the NES had space for 256 8/8 sprite tiles. and 256 background tiles. They simply didn't have enough space for Yoshi.
    For only 40 kilobytes SMB had a lot of levels, the fact that they were able to cram so much into 40k, suggests to me that lack of familiarity was not an issue.

    Super Mario Bros., the many famous Nintendo NES game of the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and the 2020s, brought to you by the music of Koji Kondo. The game's graphics are drawn from the side-scrollers Excitebike and Kung Fu to advance their previous work on platforming "athletic games" such as Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. The design of the first level, World 1-1, serves as a tutorial for platform gameplay.

    Amazing video. Wow, I really enjoyed. I will say one thing, I disagree when it was said that the original Mario Bros. arcade game has slow game play. My recommendation:
    Play the original in two player mode on Game B and instead of helping each other get through levels, battle the other player for highest score. This will naturally make you want to sabotage the other player by shoving them into enemies or hitting the POW block right before they kick an enemy. Doing this on the latter boards with multiple enemies, ice blocks and fireballs all coming out you produced anything but slow game play. It’s in the Top 3 best two player games ever made IMO. 😬

    There’s a lot of missing information here. It’s a good video from a production standpoint but I stopped watching at 8 minutes because of the statement that we don’t know why Yoshi is not in the game. That’s really common knowledge: technical reasons. I assume I won’t be able to learn anything from this video. Keep going! You have skills

    • @VGDocs
      @VGDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What's your source? From what I've found, Wikipedia says it but doesn't provide sources that actually has anyone from the dev team saying that Yoshi wasn't implemented due to technical limitations.
      I'm sure it probably was, and that's why I mention that it was likely for that reason in the doc. That said, I don't go off of speculation based on what wikipedia says since sources often don't align with what wikipedia says.
      Also, there might be a lot of missing information for you because... you only watched 8 minutes :P

    As blasphemous as it sounds, I can see in say, 10, 20, 30 years, Mario games being released on a Microsoft or Sony console. It may seem ridiculous, but 30 years ago, the idea of a Sonic the Hedgehog game being released on a Nintendo console was just as unthinkable. But Nintendo won out, and Sega was relegated to selling their games on Nintendo Consoles. Tbh I think Nintendo would be more likely to be successful than Sony or Microsoft in the gaming market in coming decades, unless they really screw something up. Nintendo's managed to be a successful company for 132 years. And have been leading the market in video games for the past 50 years. So if anyone could succeed in beating Sony and Microsoft, it would be them.

    I've gotta ask here, your speaking pattern is almost robotic in places, are you doing this on purpose, drawn out syllables? At points it seems almost text to speech. I'm not sure if that's how you are, if maybe you have another primary language or something. Caption recognition? It's distracting enough that I'm writing about it, not complaining, it's just keeping me from being fully engaged. You being aware might help your future videos.

    • @VGDocs
      @VGDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the feedback. I'd say my speaking patterns are mostly a result of it being scripted content as well as a more documentary-style in narration (as opposed to more opinionated video essays or live talking for example).
      Over time I've gotten more used to it and it's actually a bit less stilted, though even at my worst I don't really get criticisms over it (though you'd think I would since I submit my videos regularly to various threads and reddit posts specifically in search of constructive feedback).
      I'll keep it in mind for the future though.

      @@conzmoleman Not going to dispute that, though if you're causing distraction that's not great. It's great info for him to build from. I got distracted by it, you're welcome to disagree with that all you want. :) It has it's plus sides especially in transcription situations. His auto-captions are probably great. He had your attention fine, he might had both of ours locked if the pronunciation wasn't as "choppy" for lack of a better word. It's not a knock. It's input he can use or not to help him improve his channel.
