Best Buy probably charge you a lot, when you can do it for a cost of a $50 cloning device (like that Amazon StarTech) + a new drive (which has to be larger than the older drive.) - so an additional $50-$60 for a 1TB..for a good drive, none of those shitty brands.
For cloning the drive yes if you use a piece of software like acronis but you still need to be able to connect both drives to the system, the device from startech is just an offline cloner which does the exact same thing just without being connected to a pc. Hopefully that make sense, let me know if you need any further clarification.
For hard drives yeah, but don’t defragment an SDD as it can mess with the lifespan and speed. Also it’s really unnecessary to defrag the HDD as it’s probably going to a landfill.

Without an ssd those 6th and 7th gen Intel are really sluggish, cleaning the fan helps out too
I had this same laptop as a kid. Though i smashed it when i was 18 because it was so slow that was in 2018 can't imagine how slow it is today.

I added more ram to my hp pavilion 15.. and also the hdd will be gone soon (though it's still going strong after a decade or so).
my hp victus i bought in 2022 actually has 2 m.2 slots and 2 sodimm slots which i was very happily surprised to learn abount
I was able to get 32gb of ram and an added 8 off SSD, and just ordered a new processor, highly customizable!
Fun fact: i think you can just copy your files in to the new HDD using a soft ware but idk how to power up the new HDD

Yes, and it's even better if your laptop has two hdd slots or a dvd drive you can swap out for a second hdd. Helps with the cloning

You can do that on your own, use some free software, then buy 2 enclosures for the SSD and HDD, and then buy an SSD

You don't use any software to clone it. But do remember you need the same storage size from drive to drive, to avoid clone errors 😊

Just no, you should defrag the old drive before cloning.
Even SSD to SSD, it's best to trim the old SSD, before cloning.
