    So excited to see the Modern Pentathlon on someone's list! It's the only even created specifically for the Olympics and is meant to represent the skills a soldier at the turn of the 20th century would need to escape from a castle - fence and shoot your way out, swim across the moat, run to the nearest town and steal a horse. That last bit is key, because the athletes only meet their horse the day of the competition. You can find a lot of videos where the horse will NOT cooperate with the pentathlete. 100% the most interesting Olympic event!

    • @kaylindever7121
      @kaylindever7121 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      After this past summer olympics, they have actually done away with the equestrian aspect of it! When you see those videos of horses not cooperating, it's because these olympic athletes do not train adequately to give the horses the confidence they need to go over the jumps. Horses rely on their rider's confidence and ability and trust them to aid them over the jumps. Those fail videos are actually really scary to watch and it is amazing none of the athletes or horses have been injured. I think the people who compete in the pentathlon are extremely skilled, but I am really happy they have decided to cut the horse riding event from it!

      @@kaylindever7121 that's the first thing I thought about when I saw Michelle's pick. I remember the German athlete who just threw a tantrum because her horse wouldn't cooperate and the horse got more and more skittish. Maybe an impressive idea in theory, but it should be assured that the rider and the horse have a real bond and the horses aren't treated as some random sports equipment. I read some interview with that penthathlete (that a word?) later on and it sounded like they get randomly assigned the horses within a team. This is so baffling to me! Any other athlete in his/her disciplime couldn't just go and pick a random pair of skiers, skates, etc from another athlete, everyone has their personal stuff tailored to them, but somehow a living being gets randomly assigned and has to just 'function properly'? Give me a break, that seems like a guarantee for failure!

    • @anncommanda2060
      @anncommanda2060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Basically a group of about 5-6 people all performing a dance-gymnastics routine sometimes with props like bouncy balls or ribbons. Holy crap! I'm so thrilled Michelle listed Pentathlon!
    I actually worked for the International Modern Pentathlon, and it's such a bummer more folks don't talk about it!
    So for a little more clarity, the athletes indeed do the sections one after another, but it's not continuous. So they gear up for fencing, take a break, go to swimming, take a break, do the equestrian, and then your score determines your start time for the final race.
    The final race is the true combined, where they run laps and then pause to shoot targets. But it's kinda like chess boxing. They exert themselves like crazy running, and then grind to a standstill, focus, and keep a steady hand for the targets. There are athletes who will move 10+ spots up in that final event, so it can be quite exciting!

    I do love how Ryan literally said comparatively to people walking on the pool deck, that Michael Phelps is "slow". That's what you get when you choose a sport that's in a liquid. As someone who competitively swam myself, every Olympian is insanely fast omg. Also the miles, yes miles, you have to put in daily, like peak season when I was still swimming in high school, so easy compared to Olympians, it was still 3 miles per practice. So to circle back it bring me even more joy that probably the coolest edition to Olympic swimming is also Ryan's #1
