If you listen closely to the words, they didn't actually tell her she was ugly, and she even reiterated that. I never thought she was ugly as a kid in the 60s and 70s, but that's after she grew up. I always did think she was a bit nutty, but that's another story. She is a phenomenal entertainer, though.

I still think Cher was an incredibly beautiful woman. She didn’t look like everyone else, that’s what made her beautiful.
In about the year 1967 I was watching the Miss America pageant and I announced that I didn’t want to look like those girl, I wanted to look like Cher. I still stand by that comment.

Hearing Cher detail her early life and constantly being told she was "ugly" is just incomprehensible to me because is beautiful, extremely talented, no one like her and she work her way to icon status. This is why the saying "don't worry about what others think of you" is so true.

I still want to be Cher when I grow up. I watched her on TV as a kid. She was so cool, so pretty, and she had a great since of humor. And I love the way she sings and moves. Oh, and I think she really loves, loves deep and pure. I remember hearing Sonny on the raido saying "Cher was so dumb, I took her to see Mount Rushmore and told her it was a natural phenomenon, and she believed me". HE was the idiot. She loved him so much, and she was so young and trusting. He should have cherished her much more than he did. Love Cher, always will. And Rona Barrett - shame on you - but so proud of Cher the way she handled such idiot questions!

Surely when they were doing the Sonny and Cher show and the whole world thought she was so glamorous and beautiful... and he loved her, surely he gave different feedback then...? They must have both changed their mind or else her beauty modelling beautiful clothes wouldn't have been such a feature of the show.
I just saw a recent video mentioning her and what she wore at an event. The fact that she’s still around, still relevant, going to fashion events, the Cannes film festival, galas, etc., is just so cool to me. She’s a living legend.

It was 1975 .. how on Earth can you not see the invasiveness has gotten worse over the years. We've got the Drew Barrymore's Fake Cry and Grope show and Mayim Bialek's Trigger Your Bad Memories podcast and many other ways to ask inappropriate questions to anyone who agrees to talk to them... but especially the people who were child actors. Do you hear the stuff they've been asked? All any of these interviews have ever been is some silly shock factor for views..back then it was tv views and now its social media views. People never mattered.

I always thought she was beautiful when I was little. She and Diana Ross, even though my mother thought otherwise, on both. LOL. They were the epitome of glamor for me as a child back then.
I don't care if she's an icon or what beauty standards were now or at that time, Objectively, Cher was beautiful at every age.
I feel like when men insult a beautiful womans appearance for no apparent reason its a form of leveling- maning that they feel insecure deep down so they need to bring the girls self esteem down a bit to inflate their own sense of self. I hate that. The idea that if they break your spirit just a bit you will be more maliable and easy to control. It can do so much harm.
If I was a young man when Char was young and i saw her in the street I would have had to take a second look at her, she was very beautiful. But hearing her talk about her life in interviews shes very smart and interesting.
Regardless of how she felt about herself-"I'm not as dumb as I thought I was”-she was always confident or inspired enough to live according to her own terms. That's a kind of confident independence not many people have. Even speaking of sex as plainly as she does in this video is pretty rebellious against social norms; her staying that sex without communicativeness isn't for her implies she's pretty well experienced with that. But it doesn't faze her. She seems always to have just operated according to her own moral compass and not to have been controlled by anyone's judgments even if she may have felt self-conscious at times. That's really fascinating.

Plenty of cultures didn't want women to get jobs Even in the 90's and they met 3 decades before then. So that means they were raised on values DECADES before then.
They couldn't see it back then, it was normalized in their culture.
Now we're more aware of age-gaps more than ever I think.
but I know as a Korean-American, watching movies and hearing old stories they really wanted these girls to find a POTENTIAL husband by the end of highschool. If you could get someone already established who had a job ( which took priority over age similarity ) that was looked at as good! Because " You don't need a boy, he can't take care of you. "
When really we shouldn't have been pushing relationships at all that young. I mean, especially in Korea what was the point? we live with family for years anyway sometimes even after marriage like wtf?

Cher is right... In the USA, dark haired women are viewed as evil, sinister and powerful. And blonde as desirable, beautiful and feminine..She says a lot has to do with Disney films portraying the villain as dark haired and often times the maiden in distress with lighter hair (except Snow White and Mulan). It seems to be mainly in the USA

My Gran and Great Gran always told me I was a pretty girl and I think that made the biggest difference because almost everyone else said I was ugly. I remember being bullied so bad. Now I am almost 49 and I may not be the prettiest woman around but at least I have a good heart. I think whoever told Cher she was ugly was absolutely insane.
