Huge congratulations on getting those Newtype magazines. As a Japanese who grew up in 70s and 80s, I remember there were two prominent anime magazines back in the day. The one was Newtype and the other one was Animage. The Newtype featured robot animes such as Gundam a lot and Animage featured Studio Ghibli a lot. As a huge Studio Ghibli fan, I was in the "Animage crowd". That said seeing those pages still made me feel really nostalgic and definitely felt the "80s to early 90s vibes" that I got from those Animage magazine. Your videos always remind me of my precious moments in life. I cannot thank you enough for that.
I know you're still recovering from the illness and everything so please take care of yourself and don't push too hard. Your videos are gems and I will wait forever until you recover your strength.

Hearing you talk about the new type magazines and how you got into anime brought back so many memories for me. I’m only 22 but it reminded me of getting the shonen jump magazines and reading chapters upon chapter of manga. Then I realized all of these manga had anime and it blew my mind that I could watch the story I was reading. Just a magical moment and I wanted to say thank you for sharing that. Much love to you, your wife, and your new baby girl!

The way you spoke about SFII really made the memories come flooding back. That game surpassed even my greatest expectations. I know I’ve said it before but that game single handedly destroyed arcades. When you could buy it and play it at your own house for 1000+ hours... eventually that initial investment would end up saving us money in the long run. Wild.
Much love Johnny. Hope all is well with you and the fam. 🥂

I think the difference between modern and old anime is that old anime needed to do more advertising in physical media so we got the one shot art pieces. We never get that now because current anime only need trailers, i think that is why the best of modern anime art is Shonen because they still use Weekly Shōnen Jump.

I listen to the Conan soundtrack all the time because of my long commute. As for anime, I'm lucky I grew up near San Francisco, because there used to be a lot of manga cafe's with little Japanese manga magazines, all kinds, going back to the 60's. You would just come in, take one or two books (there were bookshelves all the way up to the ceiling all the way around the shop) and then get a booth and place your order (coffee, sushi, ramen whatever) So you got to know a lot about the manga industry and the various genres out there

SF II was the killer app that made me buy the console. So many great memories from college playing massive tournaments with my roommates in our apartment basement. One of them was Indian and he used to enjoy kicking Dhalsim's butt and yelling and laughing "this is so racist! we don't shoot fire balls from our mouths!" Good times, good times.

Reminds me of poring through EGM issues I could find, and Nintendo Power and Game Informer, and that was in 2005-06! Along with my library's copies of weekly shonen jump issues being released by Viz Media I think, again early to mid 2000s, mostly 2004-2008 for me.

Here in Japan you run across old ones sometimes in used book stores and recycle shops. If I ever come across some ill send them your way! If you ever want to know what the articles say I would be happy to translate them or give a quick summery! But maybe that would kill some of the nostalgic magic haha , Great video! Keep well!

I know how you feel when it comes to Anime. I remember being a teenager in the 90s growing up and the only source of anime and Manga in the UK was this magazine i used to buy monthly called Manga Mania, that exposed me to the world of Japanese animation and comics. Anime and Manga was very niche and hardcore back in the 90s. I used to borrow, swap VHS tapes of shows and movies with friends, that's how I first discovered AKIRA and Fist of the North Star, that got me hooked since then. I don't watch modern Anime as much as I used apart from recommendations from friends as I find some of the stuff nowadays a bit hit and miss. Great video dude, i admire your passion.

    • @XENOS_Indie_Game_Dev
      @XENOS_Indie_Game_Dev 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I had borrowed a complete series of Robotech which got me hooked to find more anime, and boy did I find some good stuff at an Asian grocery store, Dangaio, Guyver, Bubblegum Crisis, Iczer-1, etc. Eventually a Suncoast video store had an anime section and I went there almost on a daily basis to browse and buy their anime VHS tapes. They were a bit expensive back then, but they had some good selection.
Like yourself, I don't watch much anime today either and only like a few, One Punch Man for example.

Oh, so I'm not the only fool who stupidly sold off Suikoden 2. I had it, and damn me for selling it. I did buy Suikoden 1 for some reason and still have that, but there's a huge gap in my collection (got 1, 3-5 + tactics and DS Tierkis).

Amazing to see you back Johnny! 26:14 Ah!!!! The Five Star Stories! Such a great anime and an amazing manga! I can't believe you were able to find those Newtypes! That really brings me back! OMG what a time trip! 26:14 AH!!!! MIKIMOTO Designs! MAN that brings me back! WOW! Great to see these again Thanks for that Johnny!
I so regret selling so many of my video games to get "newer" video games. But money was scarce and birthdays and Christmas only came once a year so it was really a sign of the times. People forget that SNES games were $90+ Canadian back in the day.
NO WAY CONAN THE BARBARIAN!!!! Johnny you have NO IDEA how much I LOVE that movie! Basil Poledouris' Magnum Opus! Amazing that you walked into your wedding with the Orgy Music. Fun fact that piece was co-written by Basil's Daughter Zoë Poledouris at the time she was only a little girl. So when your daughter heard the Conan Soundtrack as her first music, it has a strong connection with the composer and his daughter! Kismat!
Another Great video Johnny, looking forward to the next one! 😊

When you showed that PC engine multi controller adapter, the first thing came to my mind was "Oh I played Dungeon Explorer a lot with my friends using that thing back in the day". I felt happy you mentioned the name soon after that :-) I hope you will have a great time with you friends.

Those feel good SNES days. Brings me back, though, I was about a decade younger than you. Lol. Hope all is well with you and the family dude. Thanks for the years of genuinely passionate content.

Dude I loved alien storm as a kid.
Got it when my brother traded all our old nes accessories for genesis games.
Got this and shining force and shadow of the beast.

I thought I was the only one that loved the Conan soundtrack. I like to read Conan books with the soundtrack playing in the background.

Ahh those games brought back memories of walking down to the arcade/pool hall after school every day to play. I still remember when the original Mortal Kombat dropped in arcades, figuring out how to do the fatalities.
It's too bad the arcade experience doesn't exist for kids these days
You'll love Yakuza. I finally decided to check out 0 and ended up playing through all the mainline games back to back earlier this year, remasters of 3, 4 and 5 also available now on PS4

These day's kids play Fortnite and PUBG, they won't know a good game if it smack them in the face like Silent Bomber for example
