    You're not very good at this dash-cam lark. don't you know you're supposed to speed up, close all the gaps, slam your brakes on and blast your horn for a minimum of 30 seconds.

    The clip where the two cars went around you. People ignore the fact the learner car is doing the correct thing as an experienced instructor is demonstrating to a pupil how to leave space correctly.

      I've actually realised the more I watch this channel the more I prefer to be a behind a learner. I think it makes me a better driver as I am more conscious of what I should be doing and expecting the unexpected instead of being complacent and assuming other drivers are going to do what I expect or letting my bad habits show themselves!

    More driving instructors should drill into young drivers about sharing the road slowing down and being able to read the road! I was always told a speed limit isn’t a target!

    • @ynotnilknarf39
      @ynotnilknarf39 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jwalker7567 checking your speed and being able to realise how fast you are going without the need to keep looking all the time is something all drivers should be able to do. The speedo is there right in front of you so there's no excuses even if you can't fathom pushing the accelerator more or being on a downward gradient makes you go faster.
      Maintaining a safe speed for the environment is critical, a good driver plans ahead, adjusts their speed BEFORE any potential hazard by not driving AT or above the speed limit which gives you more time to react to the unexpected and of course to brake in a shorter distance due to that slower speed. You're not losing any time by driving a few mph below the speed limit in an urban environment.
      If one cannot keep a regular eye on your speed and defensive driving then I'm afraid you're not a good driver and need more training to understand how to prioritise and grasp how you can maintain/get a feel for your speed.
      If you think driving at 60mph on a motorway is less safe than doing 70 then you need to hand your license in because you have absolutely no idea! Reaction and braking time increase significantly as speeds go up, you being able to pull up safely and not slamming into the back of someone on the motorway can be the difference between you and someone else getting home alive!
      I drive at 60 give or take on the motorway because for one it saves me hardly any time whatsoever over doing 70, I have time and space to make the manoeuvre's I need to do, being able to accelerate past slower moving vehicles without speeding/excessive speed. It's also good for the wallet.
      You really need to get some driver training and change your attitude to speed and also coping with multi tasking whilst driving.

    I've just noticed in Clip 20 that the Silver Mercedes in the first part of the clip even passed the Pass N Go learner that had kindly held back until it was clear!
    That stretch of road is absolutely notorious for people doing that. The amount times I have pulled in to give way, only for cars to completely ignore it and steam passed. It baffles me.
    And they've just made it a temporary diversion bus route as well. Adding more to the chaos.

    3:39 I had something VERY similar happen to me.
    I was waiting due to temporary traffic lights (could see if it was green or not from my position) and yes there was room for 3-4 cars in front, but if any cars were to join from a road next to that, they'd have a space.
    3 cars passed me, and got nowhere. Drivers for ya, just really want to be up tight against other cars to gain nothing and possibly hinder other people/block the road.

    The clip at 5:45 reminds me of when I was driving my coach on a narrow road. In a bend I spotted an oncoming bus. Very quickly as it was just a gap in some trees. I slowed down and tried to look for a place to stop. The bus never came around the following bends. It had stopped right where I saw it because he also managed to spot me at that short time (a second or so) and had a but of wider road just there. If one of us had looked somewhere else we would have come around a corner at a place where we could not meet.

    9:18 - that's my neck of the woods! Traffic around that area can get pretty rough, so fortunately its an area where regular drivers recognise that merge in turn is to the benefit of all. I'm not even talking figuratively. The difference between gridlock and slow-but-moving traffic can come down to a few cars not sharing the road.

    I feel like the 28 people who disliked this video are the so called 'experienced' drivers who have recognised their own inadequaces.
    After all, every single driver on the road who has been driving for some amount of time likes to think that they are the best driver on the road. I've met far too many people like it, the 50 something's thinking that they know everything about everything... when they don't even understand the dangers of parking near a zebra crossing perhaps, or how about parking on the wrong side of the road at night with headlights on? After learning what 'good' and 'safe' driving means, these 'dislikers' don't like the fact that they are maybe not as perfect as they thought they were.
    But of course, this is only my opinion.
    I always watch your videos Ashley, they are excellent. Very through and informative and serves to teach even the most experienced of drivers ways of improving their skill of driving.

    The chicane in clip 9, between Offord Cluny and Offord D’racy, is a notorious one. It’s blind coming from the opposite direction to the cammer, so you have to position yourself over to the right which then causes confusion for those coming towards you as they think you are failing to give way. I’ve seen many close calls due to people not slowing and failing to anticipate.

    It's so refreshing to see these. When I was learning to drive I had a situation where we were queuing to go left on a roundabout. An ambulance came up behind and went into the right lane as the queue couldn't split to let them through. I thought it was going to go left on the roundabout from the right lane so I held back and sure enough the ambulance went left. If I had moved I would have been blocking it.
    It didn't, however, stop two lads in an Audi pulling up next to me and hurling abuse, even as the ambulance passed in front of us. Can't win sometimes.

    "You should always make yourself seen or heard"
    Use all of the road if it's safe to, also!
    There's quite a dangerous junction where I am (I know what it's like to try and emerge from) where those pulling out can't see more than a few metres of the inner lane when looking right, you have to creep to the point where you're sticking halfway out and already a hazard before you can properly see if anything is coming and there are a lot of close calls. So what I do when I'm on the main road getting near to this junction on my left (unless it's too busy) is time things so I can drive straddling both lanes or even mostly into the oncoming lane, in order to get the angle to be seen more easily.

    There is one thing that I have always adhered to when driving on the Motorway.....
    In heavy traffic, apart from keeping a safe distance....is to look not at the brake lights of the car in front but as many forward of them as you can see....this way you have forward knowledge of traffic stopping or congestion mounting..... at this point I'm thinking of braking myself and lifting off the accelelarator....your braking distance and thinking time maybe doubled or trippled.
    Also, think of this,
    You may have the right of way but it's not good to insist on it.....someone else who contraviens a traffic order by not giving way could put you on a collision course.

    i tend to do things like the cyclist waving you through in my street. i live about 100m from the main road on a road where cars are parked on both sides leaving just a single narrow lane. so when i hear a car coming from behind, i just move into an empty space to let the car by. no point in holding them up when i can just hold back for 2 seconds and they can be on their way. same goes for cars coming towards me of course

    It's great to see that learners are taught and reminded of safe passing distances on cyclists. Shame a lot of people soon forget this.

      As a very long time cyclist it's sort of got better re urban passing distances but also there's still a significant number who really don't give a shit. I remember cycling up the A165 in the mid 80s from Hull to Brid with next door neighbour, he was on a BMX, me on my racer (we were 14/15 respectively), no issue whatsoever. I've been on that road recently and it's like a race track and people really not giving a shit how close or fast they drive past you.
      The attitude to driving nowadays is horrendous and the larger motors plus all the protective systems make it even worse regards reckless driving.

    I agree with all of these and would have likely done the same as the 'considerate' drivers, but I drive a BMW. Have I just divided by zero?

    The last clip the camer did a great job, but shows a typical example of drivers latching onto the car in front. Clip 4 shows drivers inability to understand the situation ahead as well as the second car playing follow the leader. A lot of drivers panic as soon as they hear or see an emergency vehicle, instead of planning how to get the emergency vehicle past safely for everyone.

    As someone who uses the X84 bus regularly (the yellow Tynedale Links bus), that route is an absolute nightmare. Luckily they've just upgraded to brand new, even bigger double deckers!
    I've lost count of the amount of times I've been on it and the driver has had to slam on because cars try to squeeze through the gap

    • @jaywright9924
      @jaywright9924 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clip is from when they diverted the route up past Horsley due to the land slip on the river road. I think it was worse during the diversion because the road where the clip was recorded has some very tight sections where you could easily got stuck, as happened between a Land Rover and a bus coming the other way once that I was stuck behind

    Hey Ashley, just discovered your channel and loving the videos. I wondered what your opinion is on using the speed limiter function often now fitted to cars? I've found it relaxes the drive quite a lot for myself, but seems to invoke ire from other roads users because I'm sat at exactly the speed limit - something that is particularly noticeable coming down Scotland Road heading towards Leeds St/Birkenhead Tunnel/Islington. Do you think it makes a driver lazy, or is it a useful tool?

      I do on a dual carriage way and motorway if someone has let me in/out, and buses/lorries do when you help them out, cannot remember if I've used it in town though.

      Lets be logical here, i think that literally flashing your hazards lights the once, as a thank you gesture, on the motorway for example is absolutely fine. I do it too, its only the once you're joining the motorway

      2 problems with hazard lights. If a truck does it when another truck has let them back in, you often don't see the left indicator and think it's pulling back out. Also, nothing more annoying than letting someone out then they pull away really slowly as they are fumbling with their hazard light switch rather than changing gear and getting a move on!

    • @will4may175
      @will4may175 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dopiaza2006 I do get annoyed with people putting hazards on at the side of the road in town, other vehicles park behind and like yuou said all you see is the right indicator making you think they're wanting out, delivery drivers are bad for that, I am a postman and don't use hazards in busy parking areas only open roads.

    A lot of good stuff here, all right. One thing I couldn’t help notice, though:
    In all of the three clips from Ireland, there’s a car or bus stopped at traffic lights, **in the bicycle filter**!
    I’ve never understood this. Isn’t that supposed to be free of cars etc. when the light is red?

    Like the careful driving around the cyclist at the roadworks. Three points and a fine on their way for a driver who decided to do it differently and close-passed me in very similar circumstances. Do the right thing, because it's the right thing to do, and also because some of us will take the time to file the report if you don't. 😉

    @11:42 - Use of horn? perfectly reasonable. Highway code 112 states that it can be used whilst moving and warn other road users of your presence. The driver may after all decided to turn right and cut off the roundabout. Flashing their lights after the incident? I think that's over the top and could be considered sign of aggression.

    Ashley a video request, how to deal with people who step in oncoming traffic to jump into their cars and expect you to drive in the gutter (single carriageway)to get around them. Do you stop to allow them to access the car even though they are being selfish or do you reduce speed and creep past?

    The clip at 9:01 is interesting. When i visited nepal, the 4x4 drivers were constantly blowing their horns, we had no idea why until later on in the trip when we were going on a very trecherous piece of road. It helps warn other road users that you are coming. I dont think many people appreciate that in the UK/West. Most people think that it is just for showing your anger at other road users. Which is the furthest from the truth
