    13:50 Driving in Australia, it was drummed into us: never swerve to avoid wildlife. Brake firmly in a straight line and if you hit the wallaby you hit the wallaby. Too many people got themselves / their passengers wrapped around trees trying to steer around wildlife at speeds over 50mph.

I was extremely impressed with your comments on keeping the traffic flowing which unfortunately in this day and age of the selfish MGIF driver is sadly lacking. All credit to you Sir and I feel I must subscribe to support your channel in your efforts to improve road safety. Thank you. With kind regards from an older driver and IAM member.

    I think the final clip is a fine scenario that demonstrates the importance of constantly making sure you have an awareness of your surroundings and what options you have available to you (empty lanes to avoid, clearance behind for an emergency stop etc) when you need to react to something, even if the roads are quiet.

  • @brianocampo7981
    @brianocampo7981 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    12:34, Another option would have been to abandon the right turn and consider a left turn instead, especially if you had other drivers behind. You 'borrow' the space in front of the lorry and creep very slowly to the left lane in the new road. Move on once you're happy and find a safe place to do a U-turn. Now you're out of the junction and the lorry driver can go on his happy way.

    The Tesla cameras aren't meant for human consumption... They're there for the autopilot system. The colour is crap because they filter the light so that it gets a much more even distribution of the colours at a digital level, making it easier for the computer to see things.
    I guess they could artificially "correct" the colours when exporting, but there's no real need. If you're exporting dashcam footage, it's just to show what happened, not to make a feature length film to play at the biggest chain cinemas in the world.
    Edit: I only learnt this Tesla stuff on the weekend from another dashcam video posted online that looked like a 70's home film.

    I regularly drive down a road on the outskirts of my city that is full of very large houses, each with a private drive. It is also a main route into my city, and therefore quite busy at certain times of the day. If I am queuing I always keep the driveways clear, even though I get beeped at to move on. It is not too often that another vehicle coming out of town wishes to turn into the drive that I have left clear, but it does happen. Had I not left the gap then every other car coming behind the turning car could go nowhere. I have seen both lanes unable to move due to stupid thoughtless driving. It is SO easy to think about other peoples needs, and keep the traffic flowing.

    That's driving like it used to be, when I first started. Nice to see that there are still road users with foresight, planning and cooperation with others. Driving can be a thoroughly pleasurable activity regardless of its purpose, and I'll bet everyone of these contributors had enjoyable journeys, perhaps not all the way, but in the main.
    At 9:38 onwards, A63 at Barnhill Junction near Howden, East Yorkshire, this road is popular with cyclists, and it has a lot bends in rapid succession. You get a lot of impatient van drivers making this van's manoeuvre every day, and honestly, you can't really go much faster than a pushbike anyway, unless you want to come of the road on one of those bends. I captured a similar clip (One van, one cyclist) on the A163, just a few miles away.

    12:08, situation with the lorry coming from the right: basically cammer has two options there, to go on to cross the road or to reverse. reversing for sure was the safer one, cause going on with a lorry in the left lane to your right, it makes it very hard to see if there are any cars coming in the other lanes. and with this heavy traffic, it's very likely that someone is trying to push past the lorry, even if it is blocking several lanes. so good decision and apparently very much appreciated from the lorry driver.

    5:53 In this situation I would have changed lanes to the outermost right lane for a few reasons. Normally when I approach on ramps on the motorway, I move one lane out at about 1/3 mile before the onramp begins. That way I don't have to worry about cars merging onto the road, and I remove myself from peoples potential blind spots. As Ashley was already sitting in the middle lane, it normally would be fine. However, as he was approaching the blindspot of the AA flatbed just before the onramp began, and because it was raining, dropping visibility. I wouldn't take the chance that the flatbed wouldn't suddenly change lanes instead of slowing down, which they ended up doing.
    You will notice the flatbeds lurched forward due to hitting their brakes to slow down. This might be because they only realised the onramp was coming due to poor planning ahead and now a car was looking to merge. It might have also slowed because he saw Ashley and had no room to change lane and had to suddenly brake as their only remaining option. As Ashley says, plan ahead to give yourself options, but also plan ahead to give others options as well. So I think if Ashley had changed to the outer lane, the flatbed could have moved to the middle lane. Just a thought

  • @will4may175
    @will4may175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You are right about when emergency services come by, and others overtake the ones letting the flasher (it's what my wife calls them) by, the others that annoy me are the ones that stop to let the flashers by when there's no need.
    We was on a 60mph road near us, it's pretty wide, only a single lane each way but could easily fit a lane in the middle, an Ambulance was coming towards us, everyone on both sides went to the edge of the road but didn't slow down, this was fine as it just sailed through, except one guy infront of us decided to slam on his brakes to let them through, so me and the queue of traffic behind had to brake hard aswell, plenty of beeping going on from a few of us it was so dangerous, I think I remember you touched on this problem a while back, it makes you mad sometimes at the lack of common sense being used on the road, and where do they learn this behavior, do they see someone else do it and think that's how it's done.

    just looking at the temp road works at the jet garage, over the years driving in this situation i have for the most part found that wanting to join that road from the far left or similar, its always best to wait as the waiting traffic are VERY likely to let you know when its safe to carefully proceed ahead of them, but be sure they got it right and watch for bikes/cycles .

    Usually when I am a pedestrian coming up to a zebra crossing I look for how many cars there is on both sides, if there is only one I slow my walking pace and maybe even give a sign that the driver can go ahead, this makes the drivers lives easier because they don't have to stop and go.

    Or overtake on roundabouts and yell at the driver going straight on who we now cut up to get off at our exit?

    The drain cover grille at 4:20 has the bars running in an unfavourable way for the recumbent bicycle. Some local authorities used to have grilles with only a few bars which were not straight and if you put a wheel on them you would immediately get thrown off.

      Well spotted. It is not obvious in the video but I rode just around it to the left. But this is one of the reasons I put relatively wide tires on my bike and I have been forced to test that if necessary I can ride over this even when it is wet and cold. The bike might shimmy a bit but it does not feel overly dangerous with this particular type of gril. Nowhere near something like tram rails under shallow angle, those are lethal :-).

    I always tell my wife "predict, plan and act decisively" instead of just "reacting". Example, there is a middle lane hogger driving slowly. Identify him from far and predict that he isnt moving. Plan to overtake and see if its safe with enough time so its all easy, then overtake decisively. Instead of closing in, slowing down and then smashing the gas and trying to panic overtake him. Same thing with a lane being blocked, identify the problem, predict that a car will need to move over, plan to either slow down, accelerate or overtake, choose ONE and then do it decisively. Sometimes doing the wrong thing decisively prevents more problems than trying to do the correct thing but not being sure of it: like when people move over just a quarter of the lane then brake because they arent sure if they should move over

    A comment on the clip at 12:29. If there were cars behind you, and it was difficult to reverse, it would actually be possible for you to drive forward across two of the 3 lanes, since the lorry appears to be blocking 2 lanes, and wait for a gap in lane 3 to enter the refuge in the median of the main road. Only downside is you will still be blocking the road until someone in lane 3 either lets you go, or you are lucky enough to find a natural gap. This might be the only safe option if there is a long line of traffic behind you.

    3:04 Always remember, the temporary signs at road works are mostly put there by people who are good at digging holes, not traffic management. Something is happening, not necessarily exactly as the sign says.
    A while ago, country road, approaching a bend, a temporary sign saying road narrows, on the left. At the apex of the bend, in plain view, a BT van, on the right, with a man up a pole. First thought, got the road narrows signs wrong. Just around the corner, was his mate. Van on the road, on the left, man up another pole. I guess the signs were placed by the guy on the left, then the other guy arrived.

    The road at 11:08 is right outside Leicester Royal Infirmary, there's a cycle lane going in the opposite direction, unfortunately 2-8 cars are always parked on the cycle lane waiting to pick people up making the cycle lane pretty useless, either you've got to use the pavement or go into oncoming traffic multiple times on that small stretch of road.

    2:48 I had some idiot almost stop on the carriageway to let me merge, even though there was no one behind him and I lowered my speed to slot in behind. My car was heavy and had very litle power, and the slip was very short, so I couldn't match the highway speed easily.

    As a regular visitor to the US I'm often surprised how all traffic stops in towns to let pedestrians cross the road despite there being no designated crossing points. Also the total lack of aggravation when two lanes merge.

  • @Red.be89
    @Red.be89 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its sometimes really hard to know if letting people out of a junction is helping traffic flow, especially in high congestion areas like central London. City Road planning is a seriously complex job and in many circumstances traffic may be purposefully impeded to help traffic in other areas. Making a small cut through a less attractive option than a major route by making it difficult to merge later etc.
    You can notice this at places like old St roundabout when doing roadworks they will cut side roads down from 2 lanes to 1 to prevent it becoming a bypass. If people were zip merged and those cut throughs flowed freely it would just bypass the entire system and cause so many issues to people trying to use these roads for access etc

  • @johnb8956

    The blind spot issue at 6:00 was good driving from you but really it should never be an issue, if you change lanes one at a time, your mirrors show you everything you need to to switch between two lanes
    The duck video at the end reminded me of two strange incidents on the same road. One time my dad was driving back from work, and a duck flew right into the front left of the car. Buggered the thing, and it was a near new beemer as well. 😅
    The other one happened when I was driving, I came round a sharpish bend to be confronted by a man who had stopped his car, and was chasing a pheasant around😂. I think it might have been to get it off the road or something. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, I had to pinch myself to check I wasn’t dreaming. Fortunately I avoided an accident but the girl a fe seconds behind wasn’t so lucky. I felt really bad for her, she clearly wasn’t a confident driver, and hadn’t been driving for long. I made sure she was ok and told her not to worry about it, but you could tell she was quite shaken by it. We exchanged details and that was about it. Of course the guy in front of me drove off and left us there, even though it was his fault really (although insurance ruled (understandably) that she was to pay).

      I would've moved to the outside lane as I passed the lorry, having spotted vehicles on the slip road. This would have allowed velocity to be maintained. In my view this is the most appropriate decision if properly considering for other road users (especially persons who aren't as competent, such as the Ford driver) and the need to assist the general flow and speed of motorway traffic.
      The clip doesn't suggest there was any reason why this manoeuvre couldn't have taken place, so why reduce speed and refuse to use the outside lane?

    • @johnb8956
      @johnb8956 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@loverofgod6176 yeah it depends if the lane is free. Also, I’m all for helping the general flow, but that doesn’t mean running out the way of potentially hundreds of situations incase some idiot does one of them. At the end of the day it’s only going to encourage the twat to do it to more people. And chances are most drivers won’t be as forgiving as you and me.

In the UK they have regulations to re-place road drains with the bars running perpendicular to travel but you can't guarantee it. 10:27 the solid white lines on your side of the road - if the cyclists were doing 10mph or less then it's absolutely fine to straddle the white lines to pass (if it's safe obviously). In this case, the oncoming white car and a speed likely over 10mph he did the right thing.
    So - the statement "it's solid whites" by the driver - isn't necessarily correct in all situations.

    Hiya Ashley. I just watched a video on UK Moto of a drunk driver who hit several cars on a motorway and carried on driving until his gearbox went belly up. I think it'll be interesting for you to review it, or make a video all about driving under the influence of something.
    Let's face it, a good percentage of drivers admit to have driven whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol before. I know somebody who unfortuanly drinks and drives often.
    Maybe an Ashley's ....... video will be something we can all show to those who do do it. Especially with Christmas and New year coming up as there tends to be a lot more drunks driving around then.

    I had a problem years ago with a duck whist driving through a small town slowly in second gear. It came in from the left a couple of feet ahead of the car and flew up at us. There was not a lot I could do as we were in a closely packed line of traffic so I just eased the gas listened for the impact and checked the rear view mirrors for a duck flying away. Neither of these outcomes happened. When we reached the destination I decided to check for impact damage and found a frightened duck cowering between the roof box and the roof. It was unharmed and flew off.

    For the right turn onto that busy main road, I would of personally have just gone out and turned left while the truck was waiting to do the maneuver, turn left again onto townsend ave, then do a u-turn at the first available bit on townsend ave then you would of had the light to lead you safely into a right turn, you may of lost some time but oh well. personally i would of probably have just gone to townsend ave in the first place to have the safety of the light to turn with especially if it was in rush hour. Obviously there is the matter of lack of knowledge of the area etc to know that the option was available so im writing this on the assumption the area is known to an individual in this position.
