Chemical engineer here, For those wondering about some of the dry shampoo ingredients (not all listed here) SPECIFICALLY for the Batiste brand: So the initial ingredients including BUTANE, ISOBUTANE (C4H10) and PROPANE (C3H8) are simply short chain hydrocarbons, and i suspect they are used as a carrier solvent to keep the dry shampoo surfactant molecules in solution when inside of the pressurized aerosol can. which also makes this product highly flammable. (both are Non-polar molecules and like attracts like in terms of polarity so things dissolve better and can be sprayed easy out of the can) As soon as the mixture is dispensed these light hydrocarbons instantly vaporize into a gas due to their extremely low boiling point and leave behind the dry ingredients. In other words these hydrocarbons will very likely never contact your scalp due to their high volatility. However, breathing these gases as you stated is not recommended, especially prolonged or repeated exposure may cause negative health effects. CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE: this is the ingredient i referred to earlier as a surfactant. it the molecule responsible for attracting the oils from your hair and forming those little "grease balls" better known as a micelle. Similarly when you wash your hands, regular soap has this same effect for collecting grease and dirt from your skin. it also has antiseptic properties. you can view this SDS for handling this product in a raw industrial form. however this does not mean the small quantities used in the aerosol spray will have such aggressive effects. everything has an exposure limit. :) this also applies for the following SDS results. SOURCE: www.makingcosmetics.com/msds/sds-cetrimonium-chloride.pdf BUTYLPHENYL METHYLPROPIONAL (AKA LILIAL) is added to enhance the fragrance aspect of the product. The SDS i found states the health hazards as follows for working with pure concentrated chemical: id still avoid it if you know your skin is sensitive. SOURCE: www.dormer.com/Allergens/PDF/MSDS/B-040.pdf Acute toxicity, Oral (Category 4) 2 Skin irritation (Category 2) Chronic aquatic toxicity (Category 2) Harmful if swallowed Causes skin irritation Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects
Dangerous to the environment Harmful if swallowed Irritating to skin Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment DIMETHYLDIOCTADECYLAMMONUM CHLORIDE (AKA Distearyldimonium chloride or DIMETHYL DIOCTADECYL AMMONUM CHLORIDE) again this is for if working with full strength concentrated substance. SOURCE: datasheets.scbt.com/sds/aghs/en/sc-227905.pdf This chemical is considered hazardous by the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) May be harmful in contact with skin Causes serious eye damage Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
I'm a dark brunette and usually just use cornflour or arrowroot with no cocoa or other colour added. If I brush carefully there is no grey left behind and it causes less mess if it gets on your clothes.
How simple and kewl is that! I made some for my dog since she hates a bathtub or a hose. Shes ablue so I made the darker formula. I didn't have arrowroot, but I did have some cornstarch. I mixed it with cocoa powder and some drops of cedarwood essential oil drops. My dog loves it!! I used a natural bristlebrush to work itthrough her hair. It brought out the shine, and she smelled good! I let hersmell
Oh my gosh, i just tried it with corn starch (because i don't think anyone knows in my country what that powder is that you use :). And it is amazing! Thank you so much :)
I've never heard of arrowroot powder before, so I looked it up on the net. I'm not sure if this is widely available here in Australia since I've never seen it. I was wondering if you can use an alternative like cornstarch?
I'm a natural redhead that went even redder and brighter with henna. I'm just going to try plain arrowroot powder. I wouldn't want to accidentally get cinnamon in my eyes. Thanks for the tips!!
Thank you! I just read that ground oatmeal and rice powder are lovely options too, and skin friendly. I'm wondering about using rice water with a powder to make a spray version that could also be a beauty treatment.
I'm using this starting last night. I am so sick of washing my hair every single day! And when my boyfriend shows up and says, "Let's go out to eat!!" I say, "Wait, I have to WASH MY HAIR!!" Now I can brush this in. I don't use so much cacao because my hair in light brown though.
Hi! I just watched this video & I love it!! I just wanted to say, I use essential oils (like a lot of people do) and you need to be careful with citrus oils because they are photosensitive which means when they’re exposed to light if they’re on your skin or scalp it can actually have a reaction and cause a rash/burn. Just be careful! (: using an oil like lavender or rosemary is way better because it isn’t photosensitive and those oils also promote hair stimulation/growth!(:
Thanks girl! And appreciate your thoughts. The grapefruit EO is about 1% of the entire product, I'm aware of the photosensitivity issue with grapefruit EO but I evaluated the fact it's in such a small quantity that I wasn't worried about it. I love lavendar and rosemary too, I just personally LOVE the smell of citrus. Do you still think such a minute amount would cause a burn? Do you have any research to share? I'm not trying to be a dink, I just really want to know :)
Hi Joy, thank you for the video! I was wondering if a future video of yours could be about how you decided to become a holistic nutritionist and what your job is like, what do you deal with on a daily basis, what other jobs/workplaces a nutritionist can work?? I'm interested in possibly going back to school to be a nutritionist and I'd love to hear about your journey!
Hi Eva! How exciting?! I get this question a lot, so I wrote a blog post about it! You can read it here: www.joyoushealth.com/blog/2012/02/01/considering-a-career-in-holistic-nutrition/
You can use clay in place of the cocoa powder they come in a range of colors I'm sure even redheads can find something to fit there are also powdered flowers like rose powder hibiscus powder clays and powders also have their benefits!!
I love this, thanks for sharing, I'll be trying it soon, I have the ingredients, my hair is naturally type 2B, I'm mixed race, yea that did give your bangs volume, I like voluminous too, would you happen to know if the ingredients in the Rahua voluminous hair spray would lighten my hair if I go into the sun with the lemon peel extract in there?, I dye my hair jet black because it's naturally kind of brown, I like the Rahua Classic shampoo and conditioner, sprays and oils....here are the ingredients listed in the Rahua voluminous spray: Aqua, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract, Zea Mays (Corn) Silk Extract, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane), Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Eucalyptas Globulus Leaf Oil (Limonene), Bark Extract (Tabebuia Impetiginosa), Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Pectin ....it acts like a dry shampoo, I've used it like a dry shampoo before, misted a little of it on, it smells very fresh, I smell the lavender and apple and slightly minty
Tasha D thanks for the suggestion although I’ve been using it for years with no problem! The arrowroot starch does a great job of absorbing any oil and the cacao is really just for colour and yummy smell 😊
Hi! Thanks for this video. Its so timely, I was just searching for dry shampoos and came across this video. Is the essential oil ‘essential’ for the recipe?
On my black hair I’ve used just cornstarch and it’s left some white spots but not noticeable unless you look really close. So I’d imagine that brown cacao powder wouldn’t lighten your hair.
please how to use it for black hair ?? and blonde or highlighted hair ??? shelf live please any preservatives ?? how to keep it for long time as i don't have much time to make lots>>>> thanks for your effort
Why don't you use a thick brush like the one we use for makeup to put this product on your hair easier.. Cocoa is a very clever idea.. Why havent I thought of this?
Hi Joy, I too am a brunette but I found that any kind of coloured/tinted dry shampoo more of a nuisance. I didn't like it because I found it got stuck under my nails and made them look dirty and it also stained my clothes. I would much rather blend in a translucent powder really thoroughly.
Hey Donna! I'm not sure what brand you were using but I find this doesn't happen with arrowroot and cacao ... It washes out so easily unlike the conventional products which do get stuck under your nails. You could also just use arrowroot powder.
You can find it here: www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2/130-2434136-9738206?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=arrowroot+powder :) I haven't tried this with anything else so I would recommend picking up some arrowroot powder!
You could use cornstarch in place of arrowroot starch if you have it on hand. It's not my first choice as most corn is GMO and I don't like supporting it :)
Jyothi Jyothika no worries! Here is the full recipe: www.joyoushealth.com/25387-blog-how-to-make-natural-dry-shampoo I also sell natural and organic dry shampoo in my shop: shopjoyoushealth.com/dry-shampoo-dark-hair/ it comes in light too 👍🏻
I highly recommend avoiding any talc based baby powders as they have recently been linked to cancer! I'm all for using up what you already have but in this case, it would be worth tossing it and spending the money to replace it with a healthier option :)
I was looking at Green Beaver products, as well as a few others. I've recently discovered Rocky Mountain Soap Company products are toxin free, have you ever fried their products? Also what are your thoughts on Dessert Essence and Live Clean brands? I've used both of those in the past, but I trust your knowledge, you really know what your talking about, and I love that I found a fellow Canadian yay! :)
daisylyn1000 I think those brands are great! I always check the Environmental Working Group's database before buying. They score the safety on the ingredients in a TON of products. Check it out: www.ewg.org/skindeep/
Rough as in your hair is thick or coarse? Try these tips: www.joyoushealth.com/blog/2015/02/05/askjoyous-5-tips-frizz-free-healthy-hair/ They will help tame your mane!
I'm a brunette too, but I live in humid climate with lots and lots of bugs 😩. Would the cacao attract them to me? They already attack me enough for my savory blood 😖. Really want to try it out though! :D
Hey Valeri! I don't think they would be attracted to the cacao but if you're worried about it, perhaps adding lemongrass or citronella essential oil would help!
It's more so to soak up oils, which are found near the scalp. Sprinkling it in the rest of your hair surely wouldn't hurt but I would go lightly on that :)
Hmmm, scent free powder... that's a really tough one. I can't think of anything that is a food to provide the brown colour that doesn't have a scent. Is it that you don't like the smell of cacao? What about cinnamon?
Thank you Joy. I am in Toronto as well. Would you mind sharing where you buy your essential oils? What about herbs? Any other "secret places" LOL to buy good stuff?
I love the Herbal Dispensary on Roncy :) They have both oils and herbs. There's also Herbies Herbs on Queen West (if they are still there, it's been years) but they are usually well stocked. There are some spots in Kensington market too but I can't recall off the top of my head. Hope that helps!
@@joyoushealth Thank you Joy. I will try the Roncy dispensary. I visited Herbie’s Herbs twice but I will not be using them again. The herbs seems old and dusty. Both times I tried to get a conversation going about their products ( as a consumer I have the right to know what I am buying) but the guy there is very rude and unprofessional. It is obvious that they do not want you to be asking questions. I wonder how they stay in business.
Hello! Thanks for great recepie))) Can you please write me what is it white??))) I'm russian that's why I didn't get it)) Thanks!!! Oh I've just got it, That it could be replaced with flour, right?))
Arrowroot is the white powder. You can find it at most health food stores in the bulk section. Bob's Red Mill is a brand that makes it too. Hope that helps you!
Tavleen Kaur I don’t think that it will absorb the oils in your hair as well but you could try it and please post the results here so everyone knows 👍🏻
Omggg... 🤩🤩🤩 its awesome it worked 😍 , i mixed 1 spoon of cocoa powder + 2 spoon of cornflour.. thankyouu for sharing this amazing video, a big thumbs up ✌🏻🌹
I am wondering if arrowroot, cornstarch or cocoa will have any chemical reactions if you have any chlorine remaining in your hair from a swimming pool.
Spirulina? Or blue food colouring... the latter isn't the healthiest option. You might even just be fine with arrowroot powder and just make sure you brush it out well.
Hi, the longest I’ve gone without washing is 2 days. Any longer and it stinks and I get itchy dandruff. Any tips on going longer besides this dry shampoo?
Joyous Health omg Joy! I finally made your recipe but with lavender essential oil and did the technique you showed us. And omg my hair doesn’t stink anymore in between washes! I’m now on day 4 without washing and I feel great! Thank you thank you thank you!

Beet root powder for red heads ! I use it to make blush and lip balm!
Great idea!! Do you dry the beets yourself and then just give a whirl in a food processor?
great suggestion and who doesn't want to smell like cinnamon :)
+Joyous Health I found it on amazon !
Joyous Health Definitely cinnamon. I've seen others make videos on this who suggest cinnamon. 🦁
Jackie QB and it pushes your testosterone levels too

Try Cinnamon and it will smell good too.
It would be helpful if you also showed ingredients for lighter hair.
I wonder if this would work as a root touch up, to cover the greys?
Cinnamon and arrowroot would be better for red heads. :)
Jeni Wood cinnamon would probably also work great to clean the scalp.
Jen Wood But wouldn't those burn the scalp
how about cinnamon for red heard

Thanks for the tips. I like Rahua also. My husband uses their hair wax for his curls! I used to use their shampoo but it's pricey.
I would suggest carob powder instead of cocoa, as cocoa may actually add greasiness to your hair due to its quite fatty content
Tasha D thanks for the suggestion although I’ve been using it for years with no problem! The arrowroot starch does a great job of absorbing any oil and the cacao is really just for colour and yummy smell 😊
Joyous Health I guess it depends on proportions :) but sure - carob doesn’t smell so tempting
Arrow root powder and cinnamon mixed works good to achieve a reddish colour .. & smells really yummy !
Great tip! Thank you :)
Hi! Thanks for this video. Its so timely, I was just searching for dry shampoos and came across this video. Is the essential oil ‘essential’ for the recipe?
no, not at all... it just gives it a nice scent 😄
Thx!@@joyoushealth
Love your video! :) you have such a nice positive vibe and the topics are great :)
Thank you so much!
you might want to use paprika for the true ginger when creating your dry shampoo for a red head
For red hair, cinnamon, hibiscus powder or beet powder maybe?
For Red Hair: beet root powder would be a good addition
Any suggestions on what I can use on black hair other then charcoal? Would cocao powder make it look lighter?
Yes. It will look brown
On my black hair I’ve used just cornstarch and it’s left some white spots but not noticeable unless you look really close. So I’d imagine that brown cacao powder wouldn’t lighten your hair.
I just found your channel, and I'm in love with all of your content! Can you link your detox hair washing video? I scrolled to find it but I couldn't
Love this video. Where did you buy the grapefruit essential oil?
I bought it at my local herbal dispensary in Toronto on Roncy!
+Joyous Health thanks :)
I actually WHOOPED out loud when I saw this in my feed! Definitely trying this! Thank you so much Joy!
HAHA! Let me know if you try it ... apparently cinnamon as someone mentioned above is good for redheads. Do tell when you try it!
I decised to let my gray hair grow out. So i have brown and gray. What do you sugest?
Paprika for gingers ... not the spicy Hungarian kind, though.
please how to use it for black hair ?? and blonde or highlighted hair ??? shelf live please any preservatives ?? how to keep it for long time as i don't have much time to make lots>>>> thanks for your effort
Why don't you use a thick brush like the one we use for makeup to put this product on your hair easier.. Cocoa is a very clever idea.. Why havent I thought of this?
I just was thinking, can dark hair girls/black hair...use charcoal along with coco to make it even darker?
is cornstarch and baking soda ok to use as well ??
Cornstarch yes, but baking soda no. It doesn’t have the same absorption properties
Hi does it work on people who working out?My scalp is too sweaty and so my hair. Thanks for the shared recipe 😊
I work out and have bangs, so I find it a lifesaver! Try it and let me know :)
Hi Joy, I too am a brunette but I found that any kind of coloured/tinted dry shampoo more of a nuisance. I didn't like it because I found it got stuck under my nails and made them look dirty and it also stained my clothes. I would much rather blend in a translucent powder really thoroughly.

That's good to know! :) I'll give it a go.
I am a full time traveler, so getting showers everyday is not possible. This is a great solution, I'll give it a try!
Awesome! I hope you love it as much as I do :)
You're always so fun to watch. I love your videos
Yay! Thanks for the love :) As far as I now, it's all the same! Tricky labels... I hope you enjoy the recipe!
Thanks! I know I will. I took your suggestion on the green beaver toothpaste and I love that so I know I will love this too.
+healthyeatingalways glad to hear it!
Is arrowroot powder the same as arrowroot flour??
It sure is!
Amazing video .. is there any substitute for arrowroot powder... ?
Corn starch would probably work too. You need a starch to soak up the oils.
I am wondering what arrow root powder is and if I don't have it is there a good enough substitute for it?
You can find it here: www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2/130-2434136-9738206?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=arrowroot+powder :) I haven't tried this with anything else so I would recommend picking up some arrowroot powder!
Ok. Thanks.
If you don't have cocoa powder you can use turkish coffee as well it has the same texture and works as well as cocoa powder. And it smells so good 😂
Oh good to know! Thanks for the suggestion :)
hello its so nice video. can I use another product without arrowroot powder??
You could use cornstarch in place of arrowroot starch if you have it on hand. It's not my first choice as most corn is GMO and I don't like supporting it :)
Maybe turmeric for red heads
I only have jojoba oil and argan oil. Can I add one of those? Is that ok?
I want to see the video about detoxing your hair but I was not able to find it. Can you please send me the URL?
Hey Daniela! You can watch that video here: th-cam.com/video/U-tJwB299XI/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!

For a sec i got reallll confused cuz i thought i was watching a cooking video. Lmao. Good video btw
RANDOM LOVE 😆😆
Hi Joy, thank you for sharing, Love all you videos! Small question, is any other scent free power which can replace cocoa powder? I have dark hair
Hmmm, scent free powder... that's a really tough one. I can't think of anything that is a food to provide the brown colour that doesn't have a scent. Is it that you don't like the smell of cacao? What about cinnamon?
Joyous Health thank you for replying my comment, I am not a huge fan of cinnamon. Something with lighter scent maybe?
I have black hair, definitely want to try this!
I hope you love it!
butane and propane are in the same group of compounds as methane so essentially they are like petrol
Isobutane is rated a 7 on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database. I suggest avoiding all of these ingredients as much as you can.
Alien2799 oh no that’s gross! I haven’t been there in years so thanks for telling me. You’ll love the herbal dispensary on roncy ❤️
Paprika could work for redheads.
itchy idea
Um thanks but anything else other than cocoa powder?
Cinnamon?
What about black hair please?? Thanks
I haven't tried it yet but I'm thinking activated charcoal might work!
What about turmeric for the redheads?
It could work! Turmeric stains EVERYTHING, so I'd be careful not to add to much or it could leave colour on your hair :)
That's so cool ! Do u have any DIY deodorant/ antiperspirant recipe? I hate to use all those chemicals
I don't but I sell this awesome deodorant available in the joyous shop! www.joyoushealth.com/2050-product-natural-deodorant-cream
Will lemon juice work
For the purpose you would be using the dry shampoo for, I don't think so but I haven't tried so I can't speak to that!
Can i use corn flour instead of corn starch ?
Tavleen Kaur I don’t think that it will absorb the oils in your hair as well but you could try it and please post the results here so everyone knows 👍🏻
Omggg... 🤩🤩🤩 its awesome it worked 😍 , i mixed 1 spoon of cocoa powder + 2 spoon of cornflour.. thankyouu for sharing this amazing video, a big thumbs up ✌🏻🌹
I am wondering if arrowroot, cornstarch or cocoa will have any chemical reactions if you have any chlorine remaining in your hair from a swimming pool.
They should be okay, but I would be cautious if you do have sensitive skin.
My hair is a Mink colour & Greying (60). Any suggestions?
I would do the arrowroot powder without the cacao and make sure you rub it in well :)
Hey Joy, I don't think I can find arrowroot powder where I live, is there any other powder I could use instead?
PS: your videos are so inspiring
Thanks so much!!! You can use corn starch as an alternative it that's easier for you to find :)
+Joyous Health thanks! I'll let you know how it goes xx
Good luck!
sandalwood powder for red heads... ?
Great idea! Smells nice too I'm sure :)
What would I use for blue hair?
Spirulina? Or blue food colouring... the latter isn't the healthiest option. You might even just be fine with arrowroot powder and just make sure you brush it out well.
@@joyoushealth thanks for the reply. I appreciate it!
Does it have to be arrow root ?
Lovegay Macatbag you could use corn starch if you like
@@joyoushealth coolness my hairs dark black actually it's really brown but it appears black
Hi, the longest I’ve gone without washing is 2 days. Any longer and it stinks and I get itchy dandruff. Any tips on going longer besides this dry shampoo?
You will just have to train your hair overtime by going longer stretches without washing your hair and not over-using hair products when you do.
Joyous Health omg Joy! I finally made your recipe but with lavender essential oil and did the technique you showed us. And omg my hair doesn’t stink anymore in between washes! I’m now on day 4 without washing and I feel great! Thank you thank you thank you!
Yay!! That's so awesome! I'm so happy to hear it worked for you :)
