This video saved me! I wasn’t aware of the extended 5 yr warranty. My fridge stopped cooling 12 days after the 5 yr mark and I called lg and they are honoring it for me! If I didn’t watch this video I would have not known. Thank you so much!
Doxie Mom Hi. They were here yesterday and ordered the parts. They are coming next week to repair it. I’ll update after the repair and let you know how it went. It’s all under warranty, thank god!
Congratulations. I tried to contact LG and they refused to honor the warranty without a receipt. I registered the product online I thought that would be enough. Maybe I'll try calling again
@@Your-Self Quick question... Are you not able to replace the LG compressor yourself or does LG have to send it to someone to come out and repair it?...
After reading through some of the comments on here, you are very patient and kind. Thank you for helping, even if some people sound unkind about your free advice.
Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for having the compressor sounds and explaining what that clicking was. I wouldn't have known that my fridge's compressor was overloading (which I would think means it should probably be unplugged to avoid a fire hazard). I really appreciate it. 💜
On mine I heard it running but could not tell the difference of a good or bad compressor. There were no reset clicks. It lost cold slowly over a few days before I knew that there was a problem. It wasn't an overloaded freezer. I paid the $250 for the flat fee service call. It was the compressor. The LG service tech replaced the compressor with a "generic" that he carried on his truck. Not the model that was coming out of the fridge. The generic one is used on many other LG models and is reported to be very reliable. In my books, this should have been covered by the Compessor warantee but I would have had to paid the installation anyway. So I let it go at that. That was my experience anyway. Thanks for the video and comments, they were helpful.
Yes, LG came out with a new universal (generic) linear compressor which fits most LG refrigerators on the market. Hopefully it's going to last longer, but only time will tell.
Thank you for the helpful video. I'm just adding my story to the complaints regarding LG. My house, purchased 11/2019 came with an LG model LFXS30766* 29.6 Cu. Ft. fridge. It was about 6 years old at the time. Yesterday (12/18/21) I awakened to water on the floor, melting frozen food and a refrigerator compartment @ 50F degrees and warming fast. I talked to a trusted tech who helped me diagnose a dead compressor, and he explained the repair would be $1000, and he suggested it would be better to buy a new fridge. I guess LG considers 8 years to be a sufficient lifespan for a $3000+ appliance. Meanwhile, the basic Fridgidaire in my basement (which rescued my food!), has got to be at least 20+ years old and still going strong. I'm staying away from anything LG, with its "linear compressor." I purchased a GE fridge with similar features, which will arrive next week.
I woke up to this exact scenario this morning. Just bought the fridge 3.5 years ago. This is the second fridge in my house (the first was a Samsung, now it's LG). My house is only 14 years old. Workmanship is really something these days.
this video is very well done. I appreciate you putting the sound of the good compressor, next to the sound of the bad compressor, and then highlighting the sound of the click, with a visual aide. Thank you very much!
Our LG French Door Refrigerator was delivered to our house on Aug. 17, 2019. I have NOT been pleased with the unit! Our previous fridge was a GE Profile which we had for 23 years and did NOT have ANY of these issues! I regret purchasing this LG!! Since it is barely two months old, it is already NOT cooling adequately. Mildew and condensation form on foods, fresh veggies do not "keep" as they did in our 23-year-old GE! Add to that the water dispenser distributes "cool" water! Yes, there is ice, but the ice has an unpalatable aftertaste. (The tech replaced the filter, but it did not change the taste.) The spacing is not good if you have large items like a gallon of milk or OJ, etc. BTW- the "manual" which comes with the LG is about useless. :/ - However, thank you for sharing the video about identifying the compressor issues.
Sadly, none of the refrigerators today are as good as they were 23 years ago. Even if you would've bought another GE replacement, it's not the same company as it used to be. The appliance part of GE belongs to the Chinese company Haier, so the quality of new refrigerators is questionable. Luckily, your fridge is still under warranty!
@@Your-Self Thank you for your reply. It's pretty sad. I also read elsewhere that some folks in a CA lawsuit all lost their LG compressors within the first three years. From what you wrote (further down), there seems to be no legal representation able to successfully take on LG lawyers on behalf of the consumers who have lost out by purchasing LG refrigerators. :/
Anyone who buys an LG Korean refrigerator is buying trouble within a few years. No matter if you spend $1000, $2000, $3000, $5000 or more you are very likely to own a refrigerator that stop working after only 2 to 7 years, There have been settled class actions suits on this and more are on the way. Another thing is that repairs to the LG Linear compressor usually also involve failure of the sealed system, the coils and other parts. A typical repair requires one to two repair people working for up to 12 hours each, plus replacement of the compressor and related parts. Depending on the model and where you live, repair service on an lG will take weeks and cost $2,000 to $4,000. The only sensible solution is to trash your old refrigerator, buy a new Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Bosch or other brand and take LG to court (if small claims court you can do it yourself and don't need a lawyer in most jurisdictions) to recover some or all of your costs. Another factor is that most repair companies will no longer work on LG and, usually, Samsung equipment. In many cities, the LG Service Center that LG will refer you to will not work on LG anymore and also will not honor LG warranty work. Have a heart to heart talk with almost any appliance service center or with a salesperson selling kitchen appliances, and you will likely be told to avoid LG refrigerators. LG has the best designs and best features, but unfortunately they have the worst engineers.
I have a 20+ y/o Frigidaire that runs like the day it was brought home. My LG is less than 5 y/o and just quit on me at the absolute worst time. I doubt I will ever buy LG appliances again.
Yep. Once the warranty is over. I’m getting the cheapest fridge I can get my hands on. No more LG crap. Had repairs guys came over twice already. Now I’m on the phone for a third repair.
Our LG refrigerator failed so we finally found out that these units are junk after no repair person would work on them, so we were told there was this class action lawsuit and we needed to contact LG. LG customer service was a joke as they used a specific deterrence tactic to prevent LG from having to replace there poorly make refrigerators. They say their policy is that they will replace the unit after 3 documented work orders to fix it, so when you contact them after the third repair fails they just say they have not documentation of a third work order and continuously have to keep submitting work orders to have a repair person do the same repair that does not work! In the mean time, initially my family and I got very sick due to the high temps the refrigerator, we had to throw out all our food three times after the three repairs failed and now were have no refrigerator through the holidays!!!! This process has now exceeded two months and is not resolved! We will look into a lawsuit in our area as well.
Unfortunately, law suites don't work very well, but you still can get about 70% of your initial purchase price back. Don't give up, provide all the information to LG and they must buy-back non-repairable fridge from you!
I am really wondering what was wrong with your refrigerator that even after repair it did not work? Capillary tube got clogged and they just kept changing your compressors?
Wow, this just happened to me! Now I see widespread compressor failures have lead to a class action lawsuit against LG. Why haven't they recalled these refrigerators?!
It seems that LG has pretty good lawyers dismissing those lawsuits. And recalls are typically initiated for safety issues, not so much for reliability, so we are all stuck with a bad product.
When the tech came to troubleshoot the bad taste of the ice/water (after barely two weeks in the house), the basic tone of his reply was to suck it up, pay the $500. restocking fee and return the thing as it will not get any better!!! Nice, huh?
YourSelf Honestly, I had a Samsung fridge notorious for ice maker issues and they recalled the ice maker and replaced mine. This was last year. I moved and gave that fridge to my daughter. Now she’s had issues getting anyone from Samsung to help her get parts so I’m not as happy with them now.
My LG (1.5 years old) sounds worse than the video. I was going to help the repairman, but I think I need to get a new fridge. Also, other users' comments are helpful. Thank you!!
Addendum update: We have two LG failures in 5 years, the linear compressor is not reliable, it has a known issue/defect. LG now offers a 10 year warranty on the compressor but that does not cover labor which is the major cost for repair.....the compressor is not all that costly but it's the labor charges. So instead of redesigning their compressor they give you the proverbial "ice in the winter" with the 10 year warranty. One other issues LG parts do not have a unique part identifier for the newer and older units, that is, they use the same part numbers over and over again so technicians are reluctant to work on them and on top of that they do not get paid by LG in a timely fashion so you wind up with a "Jack of all trades" coming out and they typically use a shotgun approach to diagnosis and repair. This time we went with a whirlpool refrigerator, in fact, we already had a whirlpool in the garage for over 5 years and even with all the Texas heat it has been working flawlessly............though, the main problem with all appliances is planned obsolescence and then the box stores sell you that worthless extended warranty which is insult to injury. This, in essence, is legalized theft. One last thing, GE had a good reputation but the Chinese company Haier bought them out and the quality has suffered. In fact, they give the GE employees steep discounts on their appliances and they won't even buy them. Good luck, I know our recent failure(s) knocked us for a loop. I am going to post this again above for others searching for a refrigerator since I know how trying this process can be.
Our dealership doesn't service L G even though they won't hesitate to sell one! We love the way the fridge is configured but ours died and there's no technician in Tucson AZ that will touch it! What do you do then?
This sound comparison is only valid when the piston is damaged, but the majority of LC compressors failure is the valve, and the sound doesn't change, the only way is to check the pressures and it'll show a high low side pressure. Former Sears Refrigerator tech, former LG Electronics field tech here. LG (LC) compressors are the WORST, I was replacing an average of at least 5 compressors a week. The best in everything else, but LG (LC) compressors are the worst due to the design of the valve. It goes attached to the end of the piston, it is like a check valve that it closes when pushes the piston to the high side and it opens when it goes back. It is extremely thin, so when the compressor works too hot, it tends to stay a little bit opened, that will equalize the system so it won't cool. Inexperienced techs think there is a restriction in the sealed system, they start replacing coils and capillary tubes, but is not the problem. I'm sure because I've done my own compressor autopsy (tired of LG tech support and managers denying the issue with compressors) and I found that. When you have an LG not cooling is that simple, compressor, or a very few cases, a leak on the evaporator of refrigerator section, mostly the top line close to the cap tube, extremely low leak sometimes hard to find even with dye, sometimes it only can be seen pressurizing the system with nitrogen and spreading with big blue leak detector. A tech still working with them told me they have a new compressor design that substitutes the LCs but I don't know the results. I left LG and the appliances business 3 years ago.
No, it's just because many people use refrigerators , so at any one time when yours breaks down and you are researching about it, so did many other people, plus or minus a few days or weeks, which we then group into "right now". So it makes it seem like all the refrigerators are breaking down at the same time.
Thanks for this... Our LG with the French Door and this "linear technology" now has lost it's 2nd compressor. About two years after buying this LG fridge, the first compressor died and we lost a lot of food. It took Asurion (the 3rd party warranty company) over two months to repair this. Keep in mind I have food sensitivities and we cook 99% of what we eat at home, so we NEED a large fridge. We literally borrowed a neighbor's garage fridge just to get by in those two months. Now, at year 5 (3 years after the 2nd compressor), this LG compressor is doing the same thing, food is starting to go bad and we noticed the temps are warmer. The compressor doesn't sound healthy, as your video shows. We are going to attempt to replace the fridge and stay away from LG this time. And coincidentally, our neighbors' LG fridge is doing the same exact thing this week. I am almost wondering if a power loss (which we did have last week) hurts the compressor somehow.
Unfortunately, it's common for the replacement compressor to fail as well because they used the same bad compressor as a replacement. However, around 2019 LG came up with an upgraded model of Linear compressor which should last longer according to them. The power loss in your neighborhood should not affect the compressor but may damage an electronic board (PCB) that controls the compressor and all other functions. Try to unplug your fridge for a minute, and plug it back in. Sometimes, but not often, that helps. It's also a good idea to keep all your electronic devices plugged into a surge protector in the future.
@@Your-Self Thanks for posting this video. Very helpful. I've been struggling with my LG fridge for about 2 years and it seems it works better in the winter and stops cooling in the summer. It's cold inside but we can't keep food for more than 2 days - cheese gets moldy, milk spoils. I've lost a ton of food. I bought my fridge in Jan 2018 and it looks great but runs poorly. The compressor sounds healthy according to your video. Any other ideas as to why this is happening. My ice maker also works on and off. Very strange. It never breaks down completely. Thanks so much!
@What's Next? I'm assuming your freezer is set to 0°F and fridge to 37°F, right? It's a good idea to put a refrigerator thermometer inside both compartments, so you can compare the "real" temperature with the "set" temperature. Sometimes the refrigerator is not capable of cooling properly if it's squeezed in the corner without any gaps for air-movement behind it and on its' sides. Also, if the condenser coils are full of dust and pet hair, try cleaning them with a brush and a vacuum. If this doesn't help, you may need to call a tech to investigate further.
I just purchased a LG from the restore for 500$ bucks. Worked fine for 3 wks. Got a glass of water, noticed it was not as cool. Didn't think much of it. Next day went back to get water & realized its a issue because the water was luke warm. Pulled the freezer out & everything had defrosted. Reading these comment, now I understand why they had several of them at the restore. Im totally convinced they just dont make appliances like they use to & all this energy saving crap is producing sub par appliances . I have adjusted the settings to the lowest they can go. Just waiting to see it it gets cooler before I have to shell out more money to see whats wrong with it. Im not a happy camper right about now & knowing that most of these new appliances look good, but thats about all they are good for. 😑 Times are tight & people do not have money to be wasting on this stuff. Wondering how much a new compresser is going to cost. In the mean time I guess I better start looking for something else 😡
Try calling that place you purchased the refrigerator from. They may have a 90-day warranty or something like that. Because if the problem with your fridge is the same as in this video, the repair would cost more than the fridge itself.
They only gave me a 7 day warranty so basically I'm SCREWED. It never got cold. I've had it approximately 2 1/2 wks & about to be stuck with a extra repair bill. By time it's said & done I could have purchased a new one with a warranty. So is this the compressor or could it be freon and how much am I looking at ? Ill have someone troubleshoot it before I decide what to do? Really bummed out. Thanks so much for responding!
I'm not sure what the problem with yours is. In general, if one of the fans stopped working, it's about a $200 repair. But if the problem is with the compressor or a Freon leak, the repair would be closer to $1000... not worth it. Here is another video to give you a better understanding... th-cam.com/video/ipwOerjFITg/w-d-xo.html
@@Your-Self Thanks for the help. I'll get someone to do the standard trouble shooting,,,but I definetly won't be spending a 1000 on something used and I dont know its history. Looking at the comments LG would not be a option down the line either. Its nk way these appliances aren't even lasting 5 yrs, but they want thousands for them. Lesson learned, always research what you buy & especially if you get it second hand. Money down the drain 😡
Thanks...gonna have my husband check it tomorrow! It is only reaching about 45-47°...the milk temp was 47°...the water on the front door was reading 53°. We missed, didn't even know about it, the recent Class Action Suit about the compressor...And THANK YOU for the instructions link!
@@Your-Self ...well, after we checked EVERYTHING out...vacuumed the back intake vents...rearranged items inside so that the vents weren't blocked...and cleaned the fridge...this morning it was at 35°! Looks like it just needed to be given a once over at this point. *fingers crossed*
@@cleanpoop9929 Fine! We simply vacuumed the back out real well and underneath...moved items away from the inside vents and it works perfect!🙂👍🏻 We didn't need to replace anything.
my LG LFX31925ST/02 Stopped working yesterday my ice cream was milk, not cooling any more ...almost lasted 8 years, dec 4 2020 would of been 8 years, repair guy says you lucky if todays appliances last 10 years! GREAT NEWS!
Ours stopped working today. Thanks for the video comparing good versus bad compressor. Ours sounds like the bad one 😞 going to call a tech tomorrow. We have another fridge in the basement that’s 13 years old and it’s running so we’ll even now !! This LG is just four years old bought new, dead so soon.
Thanks for the video. Folks, before you do anything, please call LG customer service. LG compressor has 10 years of warranty, 1st 5 year parts and labor, next 5 years parts only. My 4 years old, 4 door LMXS30796D had same issue, no cooling due to bad compressor. Since Warranty period was still in effect I called LG support and the compressor was replaced in 5 weeks (1st visit was within 3 days of my call to LG support and the technician came to diagnose and then ordered the parts, 2 weeks for the parts to come and additional 2.5 weeks for the technician to come). LG should voluntarily replace all the compressors and not wait for customers to call in.
If you got LG service, you're lucky. Many so-called LG Service Centers no longer service LG products, or service them only if they sell them initially. Most independent appliance repair centers won't work on LG anymore. Under the 2019 class action suit, LG Linear compressors are warranted for 10 years but only for parts. The labor, alone which typically takes one full day by two technicians, starts at around $1,800 in many areas, if you can find a repair service and if they can get parts.
LG Customer Service is a complete joke. They don't really want to help you once they realize that the problem is a bad compressor. You will be shuttled several times between robot answering machines and humans who can barely speak or understand the English language in your efforts to actually schedule a repair appointment. You will be repeatedly asked the same questions (by both robots and humans) about your refrigerator's model number is, it's serial number, when it was made; when you bought it; your name, address and telephone number. This happens during the same telephone call as they shuffle you around. Then you are told by LG that they are so booked up with repairs that it will be at least a week before someone can even come out to diagnose your LG refrigerator (not actually fix it.) The human on the line at LG will then hang up on you so you can't give answers to the telephone customer service survey that is supposed to come at the end of your now hour long telephone call to the LG Customer Service number. Never purchase an LG product!!!
My LG Fridge is 9 years old and has completely stopped cooling; it has a linear compressor. The compressor sounds "good" and is clean - no dust. Sounds like the compressor is covered under warranty, but want to know if LG will charge for each service call to assess the problem in addition to the labor costs to replace the compressor. Any idea what these fees would be? Is it worth fixing it? For the price of these refrigerators, they should last MUCH longer. We already had the motherboard replaced while it was under extended warranty, so thankfully there were no out of pocket fees at that time.
Each area has different fees for the service. But in general, you could expect about $100 for a visit and/or about $500 for the labor. Knowing approximate charges, you can decide if it's worth repairing. If you have an additional Extended Warranty, prices may vary.
Our LG fridge just lasted 4 yrs. However, we've had problems with it since year 2. I found a guy who fixes Refrigerators in the Denver area, he changed the compressor, charged me $600 (labor and the part). The compressor, I was told, is a little bit older but so much durable than the pieces of junk LG uses now a days.
Wondering if I can get that contact too? Having a nightmare w 3 yo fridge. Within 1st year 1st compressor died. Now 2nd compressor and still broken for over a month! Would love to get non-linear technology replacement compressor. Or if anyone knows of a good make/model to replace the whole fridge? Thanks.
Yes please send info I also live in Aurora, Colorado. My lg fridge just went out as well, 10days ago. Tech, came out from A&E factory and order a new compresser came in 2 days after he ordered it. But they can't get out to install for another 14days. Read the reviews for A &E heard all horror stories. At this point I'll just pay someone to install my compresser.
@@Your-Self gee, mine was! $4000 Lg fridge, compressor failed 22 months in, replaced in summer 22, not failing again. So, what difference does their 5 year warranty make? took 15 days for serviceman to come. some people wait months, yes months, literally. Lg sucks
Mine seems this way, but no relay click. On mine I'm pretty sure there's only a round overload on the compressor. The relay must be up near the control board
Scary. All the refrigerators seem to give up after 3.5 years. Last night our "27 cu.ft. Ultra-Capacity 4 Door French Door Refrigerator Model LMXS27626S" stopped working with only a buzzing sound from the compressor area. No freezing, almost no cooling. Purchased the unit at Best Buy in November 2016 and Geek Squad can be only here in a week. Glad, I have a spare refrigerator in the garage.
Is your refrigerator under Best Buy free extended warranty? If not, I'd call LG directly... they must replace your compressor absolutely free for the first 5 years.
@@Your-Self We have scheduled through Geek Squad but LG confirmed the appointment with an LG technician (not a Geek Squad one). Either, they know already what's going on or it is standard process to have LG reply back. The fridge itself has a 5-year Geek Squad extended warranty, so either way we're covered, I hope. If it is indeed the compressor, I am assuming they won't run any costs against the Geek Squad Plan, as the compressor is still under manufacturer warranty.
We have had our LG French door fridge for 6 years now but it’s on the 2nd compressor covered under warranty. The first one failed in less than 3 years. The tech said the warranty has been extended an additional 5 years by LG. Still, I don’t trust the brand anymore for refrigerators and would not recommend to anyone. Compressors should not fail on a fridge that’s less than 3 years old.
My freezer and refrigerator stopped working but fix it. It sounded as if it was working but not cooling. Disconnect your refrigerator. Open the drawer, pull the tray, get your hair dryer, get a flashlight - you will see some ice build up on that area against the wall, aim your hair dryer to the orifice, set up a timer for 5 minutes. Hold hair dryer with the food boxes you have there or hold by hand. After 5 minutes change the aiming slightly...set the timer for 3 minutes, let the hair dryer rest, do another 3 minutes, turn it off and let the refrigerator disconnected for 30 minutes leaving the drawer open. Close the drawer and everything back to normal, turn on the electricity again and it will be start workin again. (Under the drawer there will be pieces of ice and melted water, dry it out.) That hair dryer did wonders, it worked for me, I hope it helps you!
If the evaporator frosts up as you describe, defrosting sure helps. But it's probably a temporary solution, it'll frost up again. The bigger problem with LG Linear compressor refrigerators is that they stop cooling completely, so no frost at all.
I purchased LG frig, microwave, dishwasher and range. Within the first 15 MONTHS of ownership, every one of these units failed, and some, more then once while costing me thousands in repairs...They are all JUNK. That's right I SAID JUNK. Save your self a lot of headaches by staying way from LG.
An overload click typically happens with non-linear compressors. They are the most popular "old skool" compressors that use a Start Relay. So when a compressor fails to start due to a bad relay or the compressor itself, the overload will (click) turn the power off for some time. After cooling down will supply the power again.
I live in Arizona and today my fridge stoped cooling all the way keeping the temp at 54 degrees. I found your video. My compressor sounds great but my coils were loaded with dust and the fan had a good amount of dust on it as well. The compressor was pretty hot to the touch. I really think the issue is blocked coils so I'm going to leave the fridge off over night so the compressor can cool down and I'll try it again tomorrow. Thank you!!
@@Your-Self Excellent. Yes I already vacuumed and brushed everything with a tooth brush then I took the inside apart to make sure I didn't have a frost issue and the fan inside the fridge is working fine. It was a good excuse to completely clean the fridge too. Ok, I'll fire it up! Thank you!
@YourSelf it didn't work. The compressor was really hot, it that an indication that it's not working properly. Anything else to try before I make a service call?
The compressor can get pretty hot on regular basis, but if the fan next to it works correctly, the compressor should be OK. If you have a temperature IR gun, try measuring the temp of the condenser coils as on the next video. Then decide if it worth calling a tech. th-cam.com/video/ipwOerjFITg/w-d-xo.html
Thank you very much for your video clip. My LG refrigerator is 15 years old now, the compressor still running without noisy sound, but not cooling. However the freezer on top still works well. There is thick dust from the back, I did clean it, unfortunately it’s still not cooling. What would I do, please advise!
If your fridge is 15 years old, it probably has a regular compressor, which is more reliable than LG Linear as on this video. Hopefully, the compressor is good since the freezer compartment is still cold. So most likely, the freezer fan stopped working, or defrost system malfunctioned and the evaporator coils got covered in a thick layer of ice and snow, which prevents the proper cooling.
If it runs and the condenser and high side lines are cold, chances are it may not be cooling correctly. If you attach a gauge through the process tube and there is high suction pressure, the compressor can be bad.
Lg LFX28978ST/00, built in 2010. Fridge set at 33, freezer set at -6. Actual temp is 38 and 22. Coils are clean, all fans run. I change the freezer thermistor. Hard to tell but the compressor sounds good. A very small amount of ice on the top and bottom of the freezer evaporator. I'm thinking the compressor is going out. I didn't take a temp reading at the coils but they felt cool, not as warm as I thought. The compressor is warm to hot to the touch. Bad compressor? Maybe I could pierce the line and add a little refrigerant?
It sounds like the compressor is going bad, there is a leak in the system or restriction. Try adding very little refrigerant (they don't take much to overfill). If the temperature improves, there is a leak. If not, there is a restriction or a bad compressor. It's best to check the pressure with a gauge first... if you have it. When the compressor is running, the pressure on the LOW side should be around 0 PSI or slightly negative. With the compressor OFF, the pressure should equalize to around 60 PSI.
Man I think u might have saved us anywhere from 500 to 1000 bucks, I won't know for a couple hours, what has happen was I pulled the frig out and the back plate was covered with dust so it was not breathing, so Wifey and I cleaned everything thing up and plugged it back in and we are noticing freezer becoming more cooler, still need a few hours to know for sure. Hey but even if it turns out that's not the problem you were a big help!!!
Hopefully you cleaned the condenser coils just in time, because majority of LG linear compressor failures are due to overheating. Just keep in mind, that it may take a whole day to return to normal temperatures after cleaning it if the compressor is still good.
My LG refrigerator lasted less than 5 years. Needs a new compressor. We have to wait 3 weeks for repair for it to be covered. I read reviews before buying. Were all of these problems just happening in the last couple of years? We had to buy a mini fridge to try to hold us over until repair. Wonder how long the second compressor will last? Doesn't look good!
Thank you for the useful video, can you kindly inform me the radiator temperature (high pressure pipe from the compressor side) during normal operation with good compressor?
The tube coming out of the compressor should be pretty hot to the touch. The middle of the condenser (radiator) should be about 20-30°F above the room temperature as in the next video th-cam.com/video/ipwOerjFITg/w-d-xo.html
I have a Kenmore Elite french door with bottom freezer, it is 6 years old. The linear compressor is warm to the touch and purrs quietly. The condensor motor and fan operate smoothly. I can feel ambient air blowing thru the freezer and fridge areas. The ice maker stopped working at the same time as the fridge & freezer stopped cooling. When I checked the evaporator area there was no sign of freeze up and no water on the floor but there was water in the freezer basket so maybe the evap. was frozen and melted before I got to it. I don't know what part to replace? Thanks
This definitely sounds like a Sealed System problem. It could be a leak, restriction, or a bad compressor most likely. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do yourself. If you don't have an extended warranty from Sears, you'll have to decide if it's worth spending up to $1000 to fix this fridge.
I have a 5 year old French door LG refrigerator and everything seems to work fine, even the compressor sounds normal, but the evaporator fans on work in test mode. I leaning towards it being the thermostat sensor, but I'm no expert. Any ideas?
My LG refrigerator was constantly clicking and not cooling. I read that a common cause was the start relay and overload protector that are attached to the compressor, so I opened up the lower back panel where the compressor was and saw the two parts, ordered replacements for $60 on Amazon and changed them out (was just a matter of unplugging them and plugging in new ones). No more clicking and it's cooling great so consider that if you have a similar problem. Be sure to actually look at the parts before you order them to make sure you're getting what you need. Also many parts websites have videos showing to how change out these type of parts. There are some videos online showing how to test the electrical connections to determine if parts are bad or if your compressor is frozen and needs to be replaced so check those out as well. And while you have the back open, check the cooling coil in there for dirt and pet hair and clean that out good with a brush. Fortunately mine was perfectly clean since I have no pets.
Thanks for sharing your story and, I just wanted to clarify for others reading it... that replacing the start relay works well for basic compressors that don't run at all. However, this video is about LG LINEAR compressors that are running but not cooling. Also, Linear compressors don't have start relays.
My LG has a constant sound, more similar to the bad sound in your video. It currently maintains about 45 degree temp in the fridge and a 30 degree temp in the freezer. We tried letting it defrost overnight and it still won’t function normally. It has been over 2 weeks like this, not completely dead but not cooling or freezing properly. Based on your video, it’s not worth fixing? I’d rather get a new fridge then spend 1000 for a fix that may just break again.
LG installs better compressors nowadays. But without a receipt, the repair on the 7-year-old fridge probably not worth it when you can buy a new one for about $1200
If it's not a defrost issue, then it's probably the bad compressor. But I'd double-check the defrost problem. If there was a solid piece of ice on the freezer evaporator coils, the overnight defrosting may not be enough time. Try to remove everything from the freezer, including the back wall, to look at the coils. If there is no ice, it's a toast. Did you see the next video on how to check all fans and condenser coils temperature? th-cam.com/video/ipwOerjFITg/w-d-xo.html
Thank you. My LG is 3 years 3 months and it is not cooling any more. The compressor is making high pitch sounds like your video showed. I called LG and they will let technician come.
So whats IS a good fridge for a campervan doesn't have to be 12v as on lithium batteries but an invertor type are they the same bad compressor. Whats this one like LG inverter fridge GT 279BPL?
I have the exact same model lg refrigerator. The compressor is running properly according to your video. It has a full charge of freon and I ran the diagnostic test button and everything is fine according to the test! Why won't it cool?
Sometimes the compressor sounds OK but still is not good. It's called an "inefficient compressor." How do you know it's full of Freon? I assume you charged or checked the LOW side of the system. What is the PSI pressure when the compressor runs and PSI when you unplug the fridge for about 5 minutes? Let's say the pressure is about 50 PSI unplugged. And when you plug it back in, the pressure drops to about 30 PSI... which means the compressor is inefficient. Because a good compressor should drop down the PSI close to 0.
@@Your-Self so, I live in Tucson az and nobody will even work on an LG. I called a couple of places in Phoenix but one, the guy died from covid and the other, though they claimed to work on LG, wouldn't come out.
Hi, just ran across your informative video as I have a cooling issue with my fairly new LG. Its not cooling (temp around 50F), but the freezer is working fine. Food in freezer are frozen solid. Had a tech came out and wanted $800 to fix it. Indicated that the evaporator fan is weak. I opted out of the repair and order the fan and replace it myself. I check to make sure the fan is running before closing the unit up. While I have the assembly opened, I also noted the evaporator is running with frosting/cold (so I assumed it's functioning). After several days past, frig still around 50F. So now I think the tech had mis-diagnosed the issue. Now I am back to square one. Any help/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
A correct diagnosis is the most important step. What is the actual freezer temperature? If it's around 20°F, the food will be frozen, but it should be around 0°F in a healthy system. What is your refrigerator model number? It may have 2 evaporators (one in each compartment) or a dumper door in between them that's not opening correctly.
@@Your-Self Thanks for the reply. I haven't check the freezer temp yet. I'll put a thermometer in it to see. The model is LFXC24786D. Yes, believed it has 2 evaporators. I just pulled out the temperature sensor (within the top LED light module), the resistance measured 10 ohm. Does this value seem faulty? I'll check the freezer temp and report back. Thank you so much.
That model number doesn't seem to be valid. But the freezer temperature is good! The resistance of temperature sensors changes with the temperature change. So if you place that sensor in a glass of icy water, the resistance should be around 30k (30,000 ohms). However, those sensors hardly ever go bad. If your model truly has a second evaporator, the Defrost Sensor (attached to the fridge side evaporator) can go bad.
@@Your-Self Thank you! Sorry, I mis-type the model # LFXC24796D. I'll try that suggestion when I get chance. I did notice a sensor next to the evaporator. I've also pulled up the LG thermistors chart online and at ambient temperature the resistance should be around 9K-ohms-11K ohms. 9-10ohms seem odds. Will try again. Thanks again for you help.
Nothing beats grabbing a Jack's pizza out of your $4k fridge to find it's limper than a Grandpa who forgot his Viagra. Now I gotta load the 20 year old basement beer fridge so I don't loose $300 worth of food. My whole kitchen is LG 😟😟😟😟😟
I wish I was that lucky I got it at a scratch and dent store for like 40 percent off so no wn. I'm the kind of guy who will buy a 1970 lead lined 800lb fridge and wrap it in stainless then shove it in my $40k freshly remodeled kitchen just to stick it to the man. Thanks for the video and the quick response I feel a little better knowing thousands of other people got screwed by LG just like me. 😉😉😉😉
Do you have a video to get the white cover back on? My compressor is humming and I can feel a little smooth vibration, does that mean it’s running? Or is the vibration coming from the fan? I was going to get a new start relay kid and took the starter out, without taking a picture we’re the green wire goes. On goes to the screw of the white cover and one is for the green wire what goes on a screw. I don’t know which hole. I noticed one hole has some markings engraved in the metal of the compressor. Is that where the green wire with the screw goes? . ( women who tries to fix stuff through TH-cam since hubby is overseas, sorry ) also I can’t get the white cover back on, any tips on that. I’m frustrated with this LG and did not know 2013 when it came out and we purchased that it will have issues in 7 years down the road. I love Lg but will never purchase another one. Thanks for any help I can get
If it says "Linear" on the compressor, there is NO start relay, just a connector that goes on the compressor, and a round Overload Switch that sits inside the white box. One end of the green wire goes on the bottom frame (as can be seen in this video). The other end of the green wire needs to be screwed to the compressor right next to, or the same screw that holds the white box (as can be seen in this video). The white box is just a cover, and if you cant put it back on, just let it hang there. As long as all wires are connected you should be ok. If you have a purchasing receipt, your fridge should be under a 10-year compressor warranty. Call LG and they should replace it, but you'll have to pay for the installation labor.
YourSelf first of thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Yes, it’s the round overload switch that sits inside the white box. There are two holes right next to each other on the compressor. One for the white box screw and one for the green wire. I just don’t remember which one goes into which hole. Does it matter? I bought the extended warranty when I bought the fridge at Appliances Factory and tossed everything in the trash after 5 -6 years when everything was out of warranty, not knowing of the 10 year warranty for the linear compressor. 😱 that’s my OCD 😢. Is the good compressor noise noticeable or louder than normal, I don’t think mine sounds that loud like the good compressor in your video, that’s why I wonder how do I know it’s running? Beside putting my hand on the compressor and hearing a smooth humming sound.
The green wire can go in any hole on the compressor, but you won't be able to secure the white box if the wire goes in the "wrong" hole. The linear compressor typically runs quietly, but as history has shown, that's how they fail... running, but not cooling. And sometimes it's difficult to figure out the problem without piercing the Sealed System to install gauges. You could try to run the Test as on this video... th-cam.com/video/70y61Sq_NU0/w-d-xo.html If the compressor and all fans run, but the air blowing inside your fridge is warm, it's probably a bad compressor.
YourSelf I pushed the rest button on the board and did all test. Air is coming out cool in freezer and fridge. I have the green light blinking 6x, so I was going to start with the cheapest replacement. Grossing my fingers that will fix it. How big are the chances it’s the pcb board?
Typically 6 blinks indicate a bad compressor. Before throwing money at a new PCB, I'd invite a technician to check the pressure inside the Sealed System. It may cost you about $100, but you'll know for sure if it's worth messing with this refrigerator. However, since the air inside your fridge was cool during the Test, I'd give it a day, and maybe everything will go back to normal after the Reset.
My 2.5 years LG fridge is having this same issue - not cooling but running. Looks like everyone here is having this particular issue with LG fridges when they are a little over 2 year old. Did anyone successfully get LG to replace the fridge or refund the money? How long did the process take? I can't afford having a non-working fridge in my kitchen for too long. Thanks.
If you have the receipt on this refrigerator, call 1-800 number on the label going straight to LG. Repairing or replacing can take anywhere from a few days to a few months depending on the area you live in. Read this article, so you know what to expect: consumersane.com/lg-refrigerator-not-cooling/
My fridge 29 months old and stopped cooling and freezing 2 weeks ago...I got an LG repair guy in who replaced the compressor. on Monday,,.It worked for two days..I called today and they are sending out someone next week...I can't afford a new fridge every 2.5 years...This is very distressing...
very helpful video! what about: the door from the top part of the refrigerator[the freezer] remained open for hours by Error?? now the fridge run smoothly. but does not freeze or cool in the bottom part. I am talking about a frigidaire fridge[I guess in this case: they all the same]. please! hope to hear you.
If the door was opened for a while, the evaporator coil (in the freezer) picked-up a lot of moisture from the air and got covered with too much frost. Try manually defrosting your refrigerator by unplugging it from the wall for about a day, and all the frost should melt. Leave both fridge doors open and be prepared for a lot of water dripping down.
it does not answer my question at all, you not even understood the question. what it is: my freezer does not freeze or cool at all, there's nothing to defrost. it just doesn't gets cold at all [on the top or bottom]. it maybe some to do with the relay box of the compressor. you should have a p.o box so your viewer send donations to you if you give them the right answer and they, we can fix our appliance.
LOL, you are giving me very limited information, and it's almost impossible to troubleshoot the problem correctly this way. You said that the "fridge run smoothly" which means to me that the compressor is running and that means that the start-relay is good. The other thing you said "the freezer door was open for hours" which typically means too much moisture which turns into frost on the evaporator which acts as a blanket insulator and prevents the refrigerator from cooling ( it sounds counterintuitive, but that's how refrigeration cycle works). If you want to make sure that this is the case, remove the back panel from the inside of the freezer and look at the evaporator coil. If it's full of icy-frost, defrost it. If there is no frost at all, I'll need more information from you.
I'll contact you back as soon as I can[maybe within 24/48 hours], now I have to buy the screw driver to open the back of the freezer. omar20485@gmail.com, bye!
Is that what it is? I cleaned my fridge out 3 days ago and it never cooled back down. Granted, I've had my LG fridge a little over 7 years and have cleaned it plenty of times and I've never had this happen. The timing sucks to because I'm 3 years too late to file lawsuit claim. 😢
Kenmore whirlpool are th best friges ive owened, all lasted over 10yrs!! Got an LG 4 door fridgw 2 weeks ago and is making frost already 😳.... ive never ever had an issue with a new fridge before... what a headache. Prior to LG my Samsung stopped working 2yrs later. NEVER BUY SAMSUNG OR LG. uhg🤯
Sooo idk if my fridge sound bad or good but i realized in the bad sound the compressor had iron tube coming out of it and it isn't connected to anything as mine? Is that wrong
My LG refrigerator is 1.5 years old, it’s had 2 new compressors installed in it by technicians, it worked once for about 12 hours, still doesn’t work. Have had the technician out 5 times to tell me it was a leak or they had the wrong part the first time, etc. Is this a common problem anyone is having? Time to just get a new fridge?
LG compressors are different from others so not every technician can install them correctly. Also, a brand new compressor could be defective right out of the box. If you are the original owner and have the receipt, LG must fix it or give most of your money back for this fridge. Read this article if you have patience: consumersane.com/lg-refrigerator-not-cooling/
Same issues here. Already had a replacement fridge and it just crapped out on Easter weekend with a full shop from Costco going bad as we speak. LG customer service is non existent. They want 299 CAD to send a service guy out. Fml.
Steve Viel After about a dozen repair appointments, LG told me they will replace it. I just sent in the receipt the other day. I haven’t paid a dime. If it’s new enough you shouldn’t be paying anything, so I would try calling again and see if a different customer service person will help you. Go buy a cooler for those groceries though lol
Don't bury your fridge just yet. If it's an LG (not Kenmore) and you have the receipt, they must replace the compressor absolutely free for the first 5 years.
@@Your-Self I hope that is not the case. It's an authorized LG repair service. They have all the model/serial/compressor info and implied it would take about 2 hours, but... I've heard that before, right?
Usually, the first visit is just to verify the problem. And if the problem is, in fact, with the compressor, they may still not have it on the truck with them. So they'll have to come back some other time to fix it. Recently, they start replacing all compressors with a new universal compressor, so hopefully, they'll have it on board.
I’ve been in touch with LG no less than 12 different times they have given me the runaround that is absolutely pathetic I will never ever purchase any LG product . I thought when I purchase this it was one of the best how amazing it is turned out to be the worst. This won’t go away!
Is there a better Compressor to replace the old non working one with? If so how can I order it or what is the part number, this way I make sure the Technician won't order me the same Garbage. Thanks for your help.
Depending on your refrigerator model and current compressor number, you may get the same replacement or the new "Universal" compressor. The control (PCB) board may need to be replaced as well or updated with the software. If it's under 5 years old, LG may replace it for free.
@@Your-Self They gave me back my money. then almost a year later it goes bad. 🤦🏻♂ I thought I was ahead of the game, but they were because they knew the LG Fridge they sold me was Garbage, Model "LMXC23796M/00
Your new compressor is part# TCA38151706, and it requires a software update. Just verify that the actual problem is with the old compressor, not the system leak.
I’m having same problem right now, tecnic just told me how bad are LG compresor motor are $700 repair costs but better get a new refrigerator! Any ideas on a better brand?
All refrigerator brands have problems. LG was the worst, but last year they upgraded the compressor, so now maybe it's OK to buy. It's best to buy a simple refrigerator without the water/ice dispenser and a single cooling evaporator. Fewer features = fewer problems!
Yes...I Replaced the Filter/Dryer and Vacuumed the System thoroughly and Weighed the R-134A on a Digital Scale. The Compressor is an FC75LANE Linear Compressor from LG. The Original Compressor lasted 9 years. So it had 1 year left on the Warranty. As you probably already know...the Warranty is only good if Sears replaces it!
I replaced the ice machine, which was easy two months ago..... then the compressor dies lol. We have a Samsung oven, convection feature quit working after two years. Ugh.
Nah, capillary tube is still on the correct side, it just seems like the good one has condenser in the back wall of refrigerator and because of that the pipe is coming from the top there.
If you buy and LG Refrigerator also get your self 2 big ice coolers...........You will need them to put your shit in when the Compressor goes bad and it will. The compressors don't last more then 5 years. The compressors cost 400 dollars and 700 to 1000 dollars to install. And that repair will last one year....!
@@JeremyJ7751 I am so disappointed in that Refrigerator. It is the nicest refrigerator in the trash. I could not get LG to do anything or even talk to anyone. I can't wait 2 weeks to get it fixed so I went out and got a new one. I will never buy a LG product every.
My LG refrigerator GN-202SVK before 5 months it was not working at all and I remove relay and stuck it on wall and return relay it work just like new. Now from 2 days my same fridge not getting cool enough. Check the compressor relay. Fan coil all are seems to be ok. Thermostat set to full. Compressor are always hot so can't doubt on compressor. Showered to technician he say just plug small fan with compressor so it will remain cool. Please advise. Buying computer cooling fan to keep compressor cool will do the job ? Freezer area is getting cool like down area and down side almost no cooling.
So the compressor is hot, but is it running/vibrating, or just clicks every few seconds? Check the freezer evaporator coils first. If they are full of ice and frost, you may have a Defrost Problem. If there is no frost at all, you may have a refrigerant gas leak. If there is a little frost, the condenser coils next to the compressor may be too hot. And in this case, a small fan may help to cool it down.
@@Your-Selfthanks for quick reply . there is frost not too much already tried to place fan and move refrigerator in room where we use Air con to keep coil and compressor cool. Still the issue same. So last doubt on gas leakage. Can it be filter block ?
@@Your-Self I doubt the same as once I open fan area there was too much dirt powder and coriander . Spices . I have vaccum it as much possible . But seems it block the filter and in this model only to break the filter pipe will reveal the problem and at the same time gas pressure can be measure. No valve to measure gas pressure. Means only gas welding is solution. So can't fix in home. Called technician. All thanks to my wife 😤
All brands have some issues, but LG Linear compressor seems to have the biggest problem - short life. They updated the new compressor a couple of years ago, but it hasn't been long enough to know if it's any better.
If all fans work, there may be a refrigerant leak or a restriction inside the Sealed System. But you'll need a tech to check the pressure with gauges to figure it out.
I have a unit Lg refrigerator french door type and the compressor runs fine but it does not get cold, can you please shed a light on what can probably be the issue here. Thanks and I hope that you will be able to help me in getting to the bottom of this issue and solving the problem.
So I've got a LG linear side by side bought in June of 2016, and just the other day the freezer stopped cooling and the fridge seems warmer too. What's weird is if I press the front button that says Cool Zone Plus it will cool and you can hear it work. But when that mode stops after 24 hours, it's back to no cooling.
Try to figure out when the freezer is getting warmer, if the compressor is running, but not cooling. In this case, your refrigerator may be covered under LG 5-year free compressor replacement. If the compressor is not running at all, while the freezer is getting warmer, it could be some electronic problem and maybe not covered under warranty, unless you bought an extended 5-year warranty.
@@Your-Self thanks, yes it's running but not cooling. The 24 cool zone plus thing also stopped working now. I called LG and they said that a service center would be calling me in 3-5 days. Thanks for your help!
Mine stopped cooling after 8 months. Called service and was told to unplug for 10 minutes to reset the motherboard. That did not do anything. So I set up a service visit. so after like 3 days I plugged it back in prior to the service call scheduled for 2 days from that point and guess what....it started working again. So I cancelled the service call. Now 6 months later it did the exact same thing. If I set up a service call and it starts working again, are they able to diagnose the issue with the unit working?
If the unit is working at the time of a service call, the tech will not be able to figure out what's wrong with it. The motherboard may have some intermittent issues by itself, or it could be caused by a "dirty" power from the outlet. I'd suggest getting a power surge protector to reduce electricity spikes for your refrigerator and other expensive electronics in your home.
Hello, yesterday I received my LG fridge with linear inverter compressor, I let it sit for 8 hours, after that time I connected it without food for 3 hours. With a temperature of 5 in the freezer and 3 in the refrigerator, when I put the food in it, I realized that the refrigerator almost does not cool down so that it sets the lowest temperature, I tried in every way possible and nothing, I disconnected it 30 minutes and continues Likewise, what I will do is go to the store to claim a new replacement refrigerator because from the beginning they gave me a refrigerator that does not work and I paid for a refrigerator that worked, what do you think it can be? the freezer does work well, but the refrigerator does not cool. The smart diagnosis says that everything is fine, but that's not the case. Excuse my English.
LG linear compressors are typically very slow to cool. It may take up to 24 hours to reach the desired temperatures. The freezer should be set to 0°F (-18°C) and refrigerator section to 37°F (3°C). If the temperature is not good tomorrow, maybe you need to return it back to the store. What is the model number of your refrigerator? Maybe the evaporator fan or the 3-way valve is not working.
I have the same problem. Frezzer set to -6 works fine. I even bought a fridge thermostat and it reads normal. The fridge is set too 33.. The thermometer reads 48-50F... Not good. Had it "repaird twice already under my 1 year warrenty on top of my extended 4 year warrenty. I not have a LG technician coming to look at it this Tuesday for the 3rd time in 2 months. Nothing wasd ever fixed the first 2 times. My wife and I are very dissapointed.
The motherboard on your refrigerator is programmed to work only with the linear compressor. Some new linear compressor replacements require reprogramming of the motherboard with new software to work properly... not an easy replacement :(
Mine is going bad. Freezer is barely cold, even set on -4. Checked coils for ice and they are fine. Compressor sounds different, can tell at night, when everything is quiet.
I am 6 months out of warranty. LG covers the compressor nothing else. This brand is absolute garbage and I will be getting rid of everything LG and trying to put them out of business everyday.
LG Fridge owners, are your happy with your LG refrigerator/freezer? It looks like my 2003 GE died and I'm looking at buying a new scratch & dent LG Side-by-side Refrigerator. I would love to have your feedback.
This video saved me! I wasn’t aware of the extended 5 yr warranty. My fridge stopped cooling 12 days after the 5 yr mark and I called lg and they are honoring it for me! If I didn’t watch this video I would have not known. Thank you so much!
Glad to hear it, and thanks for watching!

Mike Brown thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for sharing.
I’m in this position right now brother.
Same here. Fed up with LG, will be getting GE.
I woke up to this exact scenario this morning. Just bought the fridge 3.5 years ago. This is the second fridge in my house (the first was a Samsung, now it's LG). My house is only 14 years old. Workmanship is really something these days.
@@BrendaJones492 Me too! Same thing just happened to us this July 4th holiday weekend.
this video is very well done. I appreciate you putting the sound of the good compressor, next to the sound of the bad compressor, and then highlighting the sound of the click, with a visual aide. Thank you very much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
www.classaction.org/lg-refrigerator-linear-compressor-failure-lawsuits
Agreed. LG is selling junk that looks good but is of very poor quality. It's all style and flash for expensive trash.
I have a 20+ y/o Frigidaire that runs like the day it was brought home. My LG is less than 5 y/o and just quit on me at the absolute worst time. I doubt I will ever buy LG appliances again.
Unfortunately found this out last night. 2year old french door fridge completely fubar.
Yep. Once the warranty is over. I’m getting the cheapest fridge I can get my hands on. No more LG crap. Had repairs guys came over twice already. Now I’m on the phone for a third repair.
same here. 5 year old LG piece of shit. I replaced the compressor once already and it just died again. Running but won’t stay cold.
Oh no. Sign me up. Mine is doing the same thing now.
Because recalls are for safety concerns not because something didn’t last as long as you’d like it to.
Thanks for your video. With the Good vs Bad sounds, I recognized the Bad right away! Thank you for what you do!
Thanks for watching!
My LG (1.5 years old) sounds worse than the video. I was going to help the repairman, but I think I need to get a new fridge. Also, other users' comments are helpful. Thank you!!
If you have the purchasing receipt, your fridge could be covered under the free compressor replacement warranty.
Thanks for sharing. I guess we'll find out if the new LG Universal compressor is any better than the old one a few years from now.
@@Your-Self If we talk about years, that's an advance for LG compressor reliability, lol.
it seems like everyone's refrigerators are breaking at the same time
Yep, it seems that Linear compressors can only handle an average of 3 years of work.
No, it's just because many people use refrigerators , so at any one time when yours breaks down and you are researching about it, so did many other people, plus or minus a few days or weeks, which we then group into "right now". So it makes it seem like all the refrigerators are breaking down at the same time.

There is a class action lawsuit going on regarding the defective LG compressors.
How do you get more info? Ours just went out
Seriously. Mine just went out too
Me three. Literally two days ago. Wow
Mine went out a couple of days ago as well. That's strange, and sucks.
Yup. LG came and fixed it. It was the compressor
Your lucky. We are on #4 in 4 years. Never again......
We went warm after last outage comp runs comp bad .🤔
Sorry to hear about it. At least you got 8 years out of your fridge, which is more than 3-5 years a typical LG Linear refrigerator lasts.
The LG refrigerator we bought 5 years ago has stopped working twice now. We will replace it and won't go with LG again.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for making this video!! Made it very easy to diagnose the issue.
I'm glad you found this video helpful, and thanks for watching!
This guy is a good teacher. He helped me understand how to go about diagnosing and troubleshooting.
Glad it helped!
You got hosed by LG, just like the rest of us. The compressors used in these units are far below acceptable standards.
Your refrigerator should be still covered under 5 years free compressor replacement.
Can I get that contact? I live in Aurora
Thanks.

Great to hear what a good compressor sounds like.
Mine seems this way, but no relay click. On mine I'm pretty sure there's only a round overload on the compressor. The relay must be up near the control board
There is a small rubber seal on the piston which fails. 25 cent part causes a 2000.oo fridge to fail.
Hello, it would be helpful if you can explain more about the overload click... What is opening or closing in the circuit when it clicks? Thanks!
Thank you!!
I'd clean up the coils with a brush and a vacuum and turn the fridge back on. No need to keep it off overnight, unless there is a defrost problem.
@@Your-Self You are the BEST thank you so much for wanting to help. You are sending good eneryg into the world and it comes back to you!!
@@Your-Self Thank you. I'll try it.
FIND A REFRIGERATOR MADE BEFORE THE YEAR 2000 AND KEEP IT
My LG been kicking since 2005
Man I think u might have saved us anywhere from 500 to 1000 bucks, I won't know for a couple hours, what has happen was I pulled the frig out and the back plate was covered with dust so it was not breathing, so Wifey and I cleaned everything thing up and plugged it back in and we are noticing freezer becoming more cooler, still need a few hours to know for sure.
According to LG, the new Universal compressors that they are installing nowadays, are better than the old once. So, hopefully, it'll last longer!
Thanks for the info, my LG fridge is not working, need to hire a technician to look at it. The light in front keep on moving.
Boy, am I ever glad I am not the engineer who designed the linear compressor!
LOL... they tweaked it a little and still proudly using it today.
@@Your-Self Also added a 10yr warranty to them as well
I have a 5 year old French door LG refrigerator and everything seems to work fine, even the compressor sounds normal, but the evaporator fans on work in test mode.
@@Your-Self Yes, my LG fridge is a 2007 model so it's an older model.
Thanks for taking time to post.
You're very welcome and thanks for watching!
How old is your LG fridge? The first 5 years the compressor is covered by LG.
YourSelf 2013, this fridge was inherited. We had it about a year
LG installs better compressors nowadays. But without a receipt, the repair on the 7-year-old fridge probably not worth it when you can buy a new one for about $1200
YourSelf so based on the issue I described. It’s pretty much toast? I’m getting a Whirlpool and hoping for it to last.
Thanks for the sound comparison. Helped.

Thank you. My LG is 3 years 3 months and it is not cooling any more. The compressor is making high pitch sounds like your video showed. I called LG and they will let technician come.
The compressor should be covered by LG if you have the purchasing receipt.
It's called an "inefficient compressor."
How do you know it's full of Freon? I assume you charged or checked the LOW side of the system. What is the PSI pressure when the compressor runs and PSI when you unplug the fridge for about 5 minutes? Let's say the pressure is about 50 PSI unplugged. And when you plug it back in, the pressure drops to about 30 PSI... which means the compressor is inefficient. Because a good compressor should drop down the PSI close to 0.
@@Your-Self we put a gage on it and it was in the green zone already. We didn't attempt to add any.
@Your-Self following up on the freezer temperature. It's below 0 degree F. Thanks
Yeah, that sucks... hope it's still under warranty. Don't through away your 20-year-old fridge, it's like a classic car would go in value soon, LOL.
Why is it when u clean an LG appliance; they stop working?
NEVER BUY SAMSUNG OR LG. uhg🤯
Hi can you help me about my DIOS refrigerator. The temperature keeps on changing non stop.
Ugh. Ours just broke. It wasn't a gradual decline either. 4 years and 1 month old. RIP.
Don't bury your fridge just yet. If it's an LG (not Kenmore) and you have the receipt, they must replace the compressor absolutely free for the first 5 years.
@@Your-Self I found my receipt and they are coming to fix it on Friday. Should buy us a few more years so we can save up for a different unit.
Good! However, they may not be able to fix it in one day, so be prepared to wait a little longer. Keep us posted.
You have helped me address my issue. Thank you
Glad it helped
Is there a better Compressor to replace the old non working one with? If so how can I order it or what is the part number, this way I make sure the Technician won't order me the same Garbage.
Thanks for your help.
Depending on your refrigerator model and current compressor number, you may get the same replacement or the new "Universal" compressor. The control (PCB) board may need to be replaced as well or updated with the software.
If it's under 5 years old, LG may replace it for free.
@@Your-Self They gave me back my money. then almost a year later it goes bad. 🤦🏻♂
I thought I was ahead of the game, but they were because they knew the LG Fridge they sold me was Garbage, Model "LMXC23796M/00
Your new compressor is part# TCA38151706, and it requires a software update.
Just verify that the actual problem is with the old compressor, not the system leak.
What if there's no humming sound at all? Like its silent and doesn't even seem to be on. No noise at all.
so if it is running and cooling, there are humming sound? is that correct?
My LG has the bad compressor. 8 months old. LG is deciding if they want to fix it or not.
Wow, that's horrible.
LG breaks down faster than a an old fridge. I wonder why -.-
Old fridge has a piston type compressor that is more reliable but let efficient. LG uses linear type that only last 2-3 yrs.
It should be G L for Good Luck! Their stuff is junk!
Cheap Chinese crap
I replaced the ice machine, which was easy two months ago..... then the compressor dies lol. We have a Samsung oven, convection feature quit working after two years. Ugh.
you changed use new compresor sir?
Filter drier is on backwards on the “bad” compressor. Note port is on right side and on good compressor, it’s to the left.
Nah, capillary tube is still on the correct side, it just seems like the good one has condenser in the back wall of refrigerator and because of that the pipe is coming from the top there.
How about if the freezer is okay but the chiller of the fridge is not cooling?
If you buy and LG Refrigerator also get your self 2 big ice coolers...........You will need them to put your shit in when the Compressor goes bad and it will. The compressors don't last more then 5 years. The compressors cost 400 dollars and 700 to 1000 dollars to install. And that repair will last one year....!
Wish someone had told me this before I bought mine! Great timing to have my fridge go out after 3 years.
You will also need tranquilizers and blood pressure medicine for dealing with their “wear them down until they give up” customer service group.
If the fan inside the freezer is working and blowing air, it's possible that there is a problem with a Sealed System like a clog or gas leak.
I've seen many videos saying LG fridges are bad, so which brand/fridge has a good compressor?
All brands have some issues, but LG Linear compressor seems to have the biggest problem - short life. They updated the new compressor a couple of years ago, but it hasn't been long enough to know if it's any better.
Is this sound also for single phase? My compressor tests electrically fine, but sounds more like the bad one, and not getting cold
If all fans work, there may be a refrigerant leak or a restriction inside the Sealed System. But you'll need a tech to check the pressure with gauges to figure it out.
@@Your-Self yeah fans working well, blew out any dust. Ok thanks trying to find someone to test (back logged like crazy here)

How old is your fridge? It may be covered under LG 5 and 10-year-warranty.
Thank You for this! This was SUPER helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
My compressor doesnt sound like either. Does that mean its half bad?
Most likely yes it's bad, this compressor makes one particular sound when n working properly but can failed in differents forms or sounds.
@@edgarvasquez8660 I honestly wasn't expecting a reply. Thanks bro.
If it is not sounding continuously is it in trouble
I'd suggest getting a power surge protector to reduce electricity spikes for your refrigerator and other expensive electronics in your home.
my is 2012 will this only take a regular compressor and do I need a update the board or jig ?
It depends on your model number.
thank you kindly for the info. very informative. helpful. good job

The hallow/vacuum like sound from the bad one is a dead give away.
Yep!
Is there a replacement compressor other than the linaer compressor like a different brand?
The motherboard on your refrigerator is programmed to work only with the linear compressor. Some new linear compressor replacements require reprogramming of the motherboard with new software to work properly... not an easy replacement :(
Mine is going bad. Freezer is barely cold, even set on -4. Checked coils for ice and they are fine. Compressor sounds different, can tell at night, when everything is quiet.
How old is your refrigerator? It maybe covered under LG 5 and 10 years warranty.
Thank you this is very helpful
