Nice color choice! I literally just used the same color on my sons bike a couple of weeks ago. Only suggestion I would have is to also use a clear coat to protect the paint from chipping especially a mountain bike.
Sanding or sharpening with water makes it so the particulate coming off forms a slurry that helps with getting between the cracks/bumps of the surface (i think)
Why do we often lubricate band saws, press drills, lathe's and equivalent metal working devices? Because the lubrication helps with -> preventing clogging by removing particles, aid with cooling and in some cases the slurry is indeed also abrasive. If you wet sand with a more coarse paper it will be a more abrasive slurry because the particles will be bigger. The water will also de-clog the sandpaper more easily. The biggest benefit of wet-sanding is therefore being able to use a really fine grid without it clogging up immediately. I think...
@@MarvinWestmaas and also those big particles clogging up the sand paper can cause it to be more abrasive with deeper grooves which you might not be able to buff out later - for paint that is.
Watching your videos gave me the knowledge and confidence to fix, adjust and clean my parent's bikes as well as my sister's. I may not have the proper setup to true wheels, but I could make do with the brake pads and a ziptie and when they brought it to a bike shop, apparently, they were told there was not much to do with the bike. I discovered your channel in May this year when I was looking for a review for the Trek Marlin 5 and stumbled upon your flip bike for the 29er. I then proceeded to watch almost all of your videos just because of all the high quality content you make. You keep saying you hope we learn something or at least find your videos entertaining. Let me tell you: it's always both. Thanks Seth.
As someone who bought a marlin 5 recently it rides nicely out of the box. Mine does need minor adjustments on the front derailleur but I am not concerned about it because I will be switching it out to a 1x drivetrain in the next few months. Also the saddle is not right for my butt major soreness after the first multi hour ride.
I work in a bike shop and the comment about how dropper posts work just office chairs is something I'm definitely going to use to explain how they work. Thank you.
As someone who switched to a SRAM 1x11 from a MicroShift 1x9, I can totally see the allure of the Advent setup. I have to adjust the SRAM every so often, but the MicroShift seemed to just stay put and was rock solid in operation the whole time it was on the bike. If you want simple and reliable the Advent 9 or 10 is amazing (not to mention inexpensive).

Seth, I need to thank you. After watching your videos for a while I started looking for mountain bikes on eBay. Eventually, I found one for very cheap which was exactly the same model of the bike that was stolen from me 8 years ago, and I knew I had to get it right away. Better yet, the bike was in good condition but was clearly overdue for maintenance. I spent an entire weekend fixing the bike and replacing some parts, and you wouldn’t believe how happy I was to get my old bike back in perfectly working condition. I don’t really do a lot of mountain biking, but I like to go for bike rides in the evening while listening to a podcast and hitting a few obstacles like stairs and small jumps around my neighbourhood. It’s a new habit that I’m trying to build that adds a lot of value to my days. Thank you for inspiring me to get back a piece of my childhood that was taken away from me a long time ago.
Ahhh I remember it well when Seth got that Sync'r and retired the trusty Trek 4900. The 360 on that step up at the start of this video is iconic folks!
Wet sanding is common on high grit paper, because the sand paper will load up too quickly, and stop actually sanding if it is dry. The water helps carry whatever your sanding, out of the grit of the paper.
Got my baptism of MTB 2 days ago and absolutely liked my evening. I proceed with the easiest trail then a fast one with nice little berm (did 3 nice run on it) then just went for a higher level one, of course I did avoid the drop and mostly pumped the jumps at the beginning but I started getting some height after a couple ones and took the berm like a champ. I will definitely work hard to get to a good level and build more confidence in my riding. I believe the water used when wet sanding acts as a lubricant and helps evacuate the particles of paint from your sandpaper. So, it prevents your sandpaper from clogging up so that the sand can be more effective when cutting through the paint, while also lubricating it and making it a bit easier to sand.
Hi Seth. Here is explanation in short. Wet sanding works because water or any other liqiud keeps sandpaper from being clogged. also particles (ussually sanded paint) becomes abrasive together with sandpaper and its microscratching the surface, creating even but relativelly porous surface, which is best for adhesion of new paint. Great video as usual.
I just spent the previous few days binge watching your videos from most recent to this. Life got in the way and i was unable to keep up. It makes me smile that you send your sister a bike. I remember one of the first videos you made reviewing walmart bikes and having your sister ride them as well when you were in Florida. the murder machine video was the one when i got to about this channel during covid and got me into MTB's great to see how much you have grown now, murder machine will be missed
Hey Seth! To answer your question about wet sanding. To my knowledge adding water while sanding helps lower the temperature caused by the friction of the sandpaper. Dry sanding builds up a lot more heat and can actually melt the clear coat and create burn marks. If you want to step up your paint job game you can try lightly wet sanding after the clear coat with 1000 grit followed by an automotive polish. Now that would really give it a glassy finish. Great job on the content. I can't wait for more flip bikes!
I love that you had your advertising in such a way that you can still recommend parts from them after you have ended your partnership with them. You are such an honest guy :) And you make so great content :) Thanks :)

Wow what a trip down memory lane I remember when you posted that murder machine video and it was the reason I stared loving the “hardcore hardtail” scene. Sad to see it go but at least it’s going somewhere great!
Hell yeah! I have the same Microshift drive train on my bike and it ROCKS. 9 speed is all I need for what I do and it rarely ever needs adjusting- I'm talking like at most once per year.
Wet sanding helps as a lube and also to remove sanding residue. Dry sand when needing to use course sand paper 320-180 range. Wet sand when going for a finish look. Pro tip, use dish washing soap in your water. That will help remove grease and oil.
Wet sanding has a number of benefits, but the big one is that the liquid carries away the "swarf," which is just a fancy word for all the debris you're sanding off. Keeping both the surface and sandpaper free of excess grit makes for more even and uniform cutting from whatever abrasive is on the paper. This is particularly useful for high/fine grit paper, which is all wet sanding sand paper comes (which is not just a coincidence).
Seth says himself that he's not good at painting and he doesn't like it, but Seth has good taste. Most importantly Seth is a great brother. His sister is lucky to have a brother like Seth
The wet sanding is so good becouse it makes tiny scraches in your bike and the paint can easily cover them and it can also stick on the frame very well
Your daughter was correct purple IS the right color. I have a yeti SB140. The frame is that typical turquoise Yeti color. But everything else on the bike is purple and I love it.
Wet sanding clears the sandpaper of the debris, which when you get into finer/automotive grits, you really need to keep it from clogging. Similar to coolant jets for machining 👍
Seth, Wet sanding works better bc the water creates a slurry from the grit and partials of the medium being sanded that would normally just fall off while dry sanding. That slurry of grit and medium allows for a smoother more uniform finish. 👍👍
When you sand painted metal to prepare for painting the sandpaper quickly 'clogs" up and loses its grit so you end up using lots and maybe not getting the even finish you are looking for. Wet sanding allows the dislodged paint particles to "flow" from the surface and the paper via the water giving better paper longevity and a near perfect finish!
There’s a cool type of bike you might want to check out, I have one myself and they’re a really good looking and fun thing to have. They’re called mini rockers. Mine is the IROK rocker+ mini monster ❤
Would love to see a video about the Chinese groupsets. I see road bike channels doing work with LTWOO and Sensah, but would love to see an honest review of something like the Sensah RX12 1x12 MTB system
Wet sanding works because the water/solvent lifts dust and grit off the surface and keeps the sandpaper clear. This results in a more even finish as the dust can't interfere with the sanding and any sanding grit that falls off the paper gets whisked away before it can dig in.
Sweet build. You should try VHS 2.0 chain stay protector. It has knobs with air pockets, so they dampen the noise. but it will do a great job at protecting the chain stay, and keep the noise down. it's secured by 3M VHB adhesive, so it's gonna stay put for a long time.
Wet sanding works because there is less friction and less possibility to "dig" on some debries making a deep scratch. Water helps to form fine grained abrasion substance on the surwace. So u basicly sand with multiple finer grits at once
Describing the dropper post as working just like an office chair literally just changed my life. I'd never heard that before and now I have a good way to explain it to everyone who asks "wait how does the seat work?"
Seth, you should do a golden ticket type thing with merch. Ship random merch to subscribers and if they win, they are invited out to Berm Peak maybe get to see your workshop and ride the trail. It may be weird because it’s at your house but it would be cool to see, maybe make a video out of it. Possibly a great a idea?
Wet sanding creates a micro buffer layer between the surface and the sand paper so it only removes the raised aera. If you use large gain sandpaper it won't work
I have Microshift Advents on my Marin San Quentin. It's been great. No complaints at all. I'm a beginner. But I also come from years of BMX so I've been sending jumps since day one lol. Been rock solid with my poor pedaling technique and shift timing while learning.
The water in wet sanding does three things. 1 It keeps friction to a minimum. 2 It lubricates, and 3 the obvious, it keeps it clean. Simple. You should wet sand and polish your clear finishes. Get that deep car shine. That is usually done with the thousand grit paper 2k and up. The higher the number the shinier it gets. Remember waxes and polishes have a gritty feel to it,. Its liquid sand paper
Wow! That looks amazing! You built a bike from extra parts sitting around your shop and it’s nicer than any bike I will ever afford to own. 😂 Great job, you really know your stuff and that paint job is amazing!
echo your thoughts on the microshift - i put it on my hardtail and shifting performance is as good as my eagle GX or indeed just about anything I've ridden in 20 years.
If you don't wet sand, it will look great but feel rough. Wet sanding makes it feel buttery smooth and ads a slight sheen to it. Plus, it takes little time. TIP: if you spray it with a cheap $15 sprayer you can ad HARDNER to the paint just like a car or OEM paint job. Why? because it makes the paint job a lot more durable to handle mountain bike trail scratches, from sticks, trees, roots, falls etc. TIP2 you can even duplicate a certain car color that you may like with the paint number (easy to get) remember to ad hardener to the clear coat also and you have a BULLETPROOF paint finish.

The water carries the dust out of the paper keeping the spaces between the grit clean. Makes for faster and smoother sanding.
@@dakshrokadia_MTB sanding paint dry clogs up the paper too bad.

How did that literally change your life? Lol
The paint on this is just breathtaking 🙏🏼
Seth, you should do a golden ticket type thing with merch. Ship random merch to subscribers and if they win, they are invited out to Berm Peak maybe get to see your workshop and ride the trail. It may be weird because it’s at your house but it would be cool to see, maybe make a video out of it. Possibly a great a idea?
That’s cool! You should do a whole video where you take her on her first trail!
They live on opposite coasts, pretty unlikely
@@Tyreinn He goes to whistler bike park. I’m sure he can get to California.
This is encouraging me to build bikes for everyone I know!
I hope you remembered to put a Berm Peak sticker on there...
Wet sanding creates a micro buffer layer between the surface and the sand paper so it only removes the raised aera. If you use large gain sandpaper it won't work
That is such a sweet build for your sister. She will be shredding on that frame…
I have Microshift Advents on my Marin San Quentin. It's been great. No complaints at all. I'm a beginner. But I also come from years of BMX so I've been sending jumps since day one lol. Been rock solid with my poor pedaling technique and shift timing while learning.
Always entertaining, often informative and always a pleasure.
Wet sanding prevents the paper from clogging and also keeps heat down
The water in wet sanding does three things.
Hey Seth really loved this video! The attention to the build and the lessons at the end. Keep it up!
It's a great day when seth build bikes😁
echo your thoughts on the microshift - i put it on my hardtail and shifting performance is as good as my eagle GX or indeed just about anything I've ridden in 20 years.
Nice job you did on that bike Seth. Using that tent as a paint booth was brilliant!
