Building the Custom Titanium Hardtail of my Dreams

  • Back in July when I officially became sponsorless, I started thinking about exactly the bike I wanted for the first time in years. I knew I wanted a titanium hardtail, but nobody made the exact geometry I really preferred. The reach was always too long, or the size small had some bend in the seat tube that would prevent my dropper post from being inserted the whole way.
That’s when I realized that “zero-compromise” would mean having a custom frame built. So I started my conversation with Sage, who makes built to order titanium frames out of Oregon. Not only did I get the exact geometry that I wanted, but also a custom paint job. I was against painting the titanium at all from the start, but they won me over with a custom Cerakote scheme that covers only the rear of the bike.
I also picked out all the parts for this bike. Some companies I had contacts at, and I was able to get a discount or even a free part. But back when I started my orders, many companies were fresh out of stock, and so I needed to pay full retail sideways to get the parts in time. Had I compromised and taken parts that were available, or parts I could get for free, it would have been just that-a compromise.
Now that the bike is finished, I’m really wondering how it rides! I took it down a dirt road while lugging around a bunch of cameras to get the finished shots, and then promptly got sick. Next week I’ll ride the bike in all sorts of different conditions, and then go into more detail about the geometry!

I’m just glad you went this way instead of “this season I’m going to ride an entry-level budget bike” and then pop up with a $4000 bike. I’ve unsubscribed to at least two channels for that. I admire nice bikes, but I don’t like being told stuff that costs more than my car is entry level. Custom bikes are worth what you’re willing to pay and are awesome.

I work at a bike shop and whenever we have brake hose rattling in the frame we wrap a zip tie around it and leave the tail uncut, so when you push it into the frame it pushes against the sides and stops the rattling.

The thing is a beast on the road or trails, and the split wheel size (26" rear, 29" front) is a lot of fun. Get well soon Seth!

@@drooghead i don't suppose he fed Pup while he kept him on some abandoned property for a week, did he? what a horrible thing. kept in some strange place for a week only to be beaten to death on return. poor dog. if anything is right in the world, he loses everything he ever worked for

Deeply cool build.Back in the mid 90s I had a Raleigh Torus Titanium with a set of Marzocchi DH3 "downhill" forks with a whopping 3"(lol) of travel.I took off the bar ends, put on a Club Roost riser bar and that bike did everything.Titanium is the best,I`d have another Ti frame in a heartbeat if I could afford one.

    Superb bike!!!!
I ordered a Stanton Switch9erTi Gen4… Titanium was a dream since the 90s! Now I decided to come it true! Will build it up a bit more towards the Enduro side, but not too much… Lyrik Ultimate 150mm and DHRs on the rear. Hope Tech 3 V4 Brakes! Anything else won’t be too heavy: Rims with only 28mm inner, Carbon Bar as well, Vecnum Nivo seatpost, XO1 Cranks (because I have them here), XT Drivetrain. As soon as I can, it will get a XTR Cassette to safe some weight…
The frame is already in the customs, so hopefully I can build up the bike next week! 🎉

My god Seth! Epic build. I'm not a fan of modern bikes. I'm stuck in the 90's. This one sparks that excitement I get when "staring" at a quality custom bike. It reminds me of the simpler times when we had so many choices of home grown high end frames and parts. I've been collecting ultra rare custom parts from the glory days to assemble my dream bike. I have to say that this inspires me to crank of few of them out. I can for sure build the 90's equivalent to your bike. If I had an unlimited budget though. This is exactly what I would build. It's nothing short of pure art.

I've been riging my NUKE PROOF since 1993' and it's still tight and solid. it's softened up by ~ 6% based on last flex test on the BB. I've also been , between 235-250lbs. over that time period and blast big gears having been a pro Skier and ILB in University, downhill, trail, A line.. you name it, it's done it and been a champ for it. Everyone looks at me like i'm an alien running around on 26s and 8spd XTR gear. I will attest to the durability of Titanium. amazing properties.
