Building the Custom Titanium Hardtail of my Dreams

  • Back in July when I officially became sponsorless, I started thinking about exactly the bike I wanted for the first time in years. I knew I wanted a titanium hardtail, but nobody made the exact geometry I really preferred. The reach was always too long, or the size small had some bend in the seat tube that would prevent my dropper post from being inserted the whole way.
    That’s when I realized that “zero-compromise” would mean having a custom frame built. So I started my conversation with Sage, who makes built to order titanium frames out of Oregon. Not only did I get the exact geometry that I wanted, but also a custom paint job. I was against painting the titanium at all from the start, but they won me over with a custom Cerakote scheme that covers only the rear of the bike.
    I also picked out all the parts for this bike. Some companies I had contacts at, and I was able to get a discount or even a free part. But back when I started my orders, many companies were fresh out of stock, and so I needed to pay full retail sideways to get the parts in time. Had I compromised and taken parts that were available, or parts I could get for free, it would have been just that-a compromise.
    Now that the bike is finished, I’m really wondering how it rides! I took it down a dirt road while lugging around a bunch of cameras to get the finished shots, and then promptly got sick. Next week I’ll ride the bike in all sorts of different conditions, and then go into more detail about the geometry!

    I’m just glad you went this way instead of “this season I’m going to ride an entry-level budget bike” and then pop up with a $4000 bike. I’ve unsubscribed to at least two channels for that. I admire nice bikes, but I don’t like being told stuff that costs more than my car is entry level. Custom bikes are worth what you’re willing to pay and are awesome.

      I recently bought by most expensive bike ($6000 CAD) on sale for $4200. They salesman referred to it as dirt cheap. Disgusted me. I lost an entire nights sleep debating if I should drop that kind of cash and spent hours justifying it, Couldn't believe the Spec I wanted (marzocchi and fox float with deore drivetrain) was in that price bracket, but figured I deserved it as I have made my way after years of ridindg 90's bikes and other entry level modern bikes. It cost almost as much as my ATV and this guy called it dirt cheap. really rubbed me the wrong way, however Im happy with the bike but we are getting way to comfortable calling these bikes cheap or entry level.

    Carbon fibre will outlast a titanium in terms of fatigue, because as Ti is very resistant to fatigue, carbon fibre is immune to fatigue. However, Ti would most likely be quite a bit more resistant to crashing into sharp objects. If anyone gives a shit.

    • @jorgecap3898
      @jorgecap3898 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, a good quality steel is also very resistant to fatigue, and even better, if the frame is well designed, It can also have a springy feel, very responsive. Carbon fibre for me is a big no no, since I've seen it break without prior warning (punctures and chips can eat away the cohesive strength of the fibre). Titanium is great for being in the middle of performance character between aluminium and steel, plus resistant to corrosion. Good for climbers and people who like a nimble frame that's also supple (if the design of the frame allows it). Anyway, different horses for different courses :)

    • @matecser7256
      @matecser7256 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Saying that carbon fibre is immune to fatigue is very misleading. Fibre-reinforced composites have different failure modes compared to metals, and none of them is analogous to fatigue. However composites can also fail due to cyclic loading below their ultimate strength, in fact, they are considered more dangerous, because in most cases the failure is governed by the snapping of the fibres. The response of carbon fibres to cyclic loading is not very well understood, we only have statistical methods to determine the likeliness of failure after a given amount of load cycles. Moreover, failure is very sudden, thus the signs are impossible to detect (this is one of the reasons why you see carbon frames snap in half from time to time, the other is of course the poor impact resistance).
      All that being said a titanium frame will usually last longer on a mountain bike because of its impact resistance. You are much more likely to crash your fancy carbon bike and snap the frame in half before the titanium frame begins to fail due to fatigue. Composites are the best for saving weight but not for durability.

    • @callumcarscadden4865
      @callumcarscadden4865 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matecser7256 first of all, are you an engineer? The terms you use seem to point towards that. I should've said carbon fibre is virtually immune to fatigue (as far as I know). I had seen a video somewhere of carbon fibre frame fatigue testing and after over a million cycles, the frame did not lose any strength. That's just one video.
      I also want to point out there is no best material for building a bike, only different materials that work for certain situations better than others. Thanks for the reply!

    • @matecser7256
      @matecser7256 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@callumcarscadden4865 Yes, I'm studying aerospace engineering (rn I'm preparing for my aerospace structures and materials exam). Also, I did not say what the best material for a frame is, but that one is more suited for a specific purpose (obviously there are a lot of factors). And yes, you can engineer something to withstand virtually an infinite number of load cycles, but that goes for metals as well. In fact, in fatigue-limited design, it is very common to design for the so-called "endurance limit", which means that the cracks won't grow and your structure (in theory) will last forever.
      Sorry for all the scientific answers but this is the only way to justify writing youtube comments during my study time.

    I’m building up a Canfield Yelli frame and I couldn’t be more stoked on your build! I felt building “your life up to a build” so hard and I appreciate you working so hard to get this far. Rip them trails good sir you deserve it!!
    Also I’m coming from a 2016 DB Mason Pro. I will love that bike till the day I die but it’s nice to expand to new territory

    Dope. Also have connections to the Blur Ridge, paint is awesome. Looking forward to seeing the easter eggs. Perfection is often a matter of the eye of beholder and IMO this is it for a trail HT. Nicely done! Feel better soon, hopefully it's over and done quick for you.

    I built up a titanium bike this summer myself, as my Bafang mid drive killed the bottom bracket shell on my old specialized hardrock. New bike specs are pretty sick too: the frame is a Carver 96'er, drive train is a BBSHD mid drive pulling a Shimano Alfine 8 hub, riding on a rockshox recon 100mm fork, with TRP spyre cable brakes. The thing is a beast on the road or trails, and the split wheel size (26" rear, 29" front) is a lot of fun. Get well soon Seth!

    I had a Kona Hei Hei ti frame with a Marz Bomber(chrome with red) way back when. It was my training/ride/race bike...loved it. It had a pop from the flex in the chainstays and to this day the only frame I didn't break...and that's after owning oodles of steel, aluminum and carbon frames. Bomb proof. And pretty sure I never serviced that Bomber fork and it rode and rode!

    I can fully appreciate this video and how you feel about your new bike having had a custom made Roberts Roughstuff expedition bike made for me around 15 years ago, it seemed horrendously expensive at the time but I have now done thousands of miles on it and had some great adventures and the price has long been forgotten.

    I always find it funny when people who don't know about welding talk about it :D Talking about how beautiful the titanium welds look like and showing the most generic (still a good weld) tig weld. For everyone wondering stainless steal tig welds look pretty much identical.
