Sounds like my sewing journey! Started off with bare minimum and low end Singer and it was just enough to get me started and to the point where I figured out what I wanted. But I always tell people, start off with something hard. Totally start with your dream garment! That's what I did and it was so awful, but I did it! I sewed my dream garment! It was just really motivating.
Same! The second garment I ever made was a pair of pants (pattern from TH-cam) AND I LOVED IT ❤ I still wear it. Is it structurally sound? Absolutely not. Did it take me forever and a bit of crying? You bet. But I learned so much along the way, I made it and I'm still incredibly proud of it. Never made a pillowcase like, ever haha
I am a 54 year old man that was gifted a singer heavy duty classic 4 months ago. I watched videos for about a 7 days before buying fabric and a pattern. Every beginner video for beginners said to start slow with practice and simple and blah blah blah. I have done metal work, wood crafting (custom cabinetry, furniture) and such, and saw that sewing is simply engineering with cloth. I purchased 3.5 yards of material, a few other sewing tools, and thread. I made mistakes, I corrected them, and a month later, wore a custom made dress shirt to my nieces wedding. She has been sewing for 14 years, and recently graduated with a degree in fashion and design. When she saw my simple first attempt shirt, she was astonished to say the least. I nailed that shirt and as a result I wanted to say the following... You, I , and everyone else do not need to start small. If you want it bad enough...go do it and do not fear failure. Replace the failure with a desire to succeed and you will. Starting small is for the meek. See it, know it, and do it.
Great tips ! My two cents as a sewing teacher: Step 2: A lot of dollar store scissors are awesome for beginners. Step 3: practice not forgetting to put your sewing foot down before sewing and then get thread nests !!! Step 4: a skirt is also an easy first pattern. Step 5: Do a muslin first ! Especially if your fabric is vintage… I learned the hard way.
Just got my first sewing machine today but already forgot the presser foot 3 times... Glad it seems to be a common mistake - felt really dumb by the third time! :D
I started sewing when I was 11 and I'm now 16. I start with very basic things and one day I tried to make clothes. Now I'm obsessed and so proud of myself every time I finish a project. Love your videos so much 😘😘
Perfect timing. I just started to sew today following your simple tote bag tutorial and to be very honest, it came out so nice and I'm actually waiting for it to dry after I dyed it. Can't wait to be able to sew my own clothes!!
A tip from a person who didn’t have the internet nor a class to learn how to sew… you need to be real with yourself. You need patience. Lots and lots of patience. Patience to tear things apart and start again perhaps more than once. If you have the attention of a gnat or just tend to give up things after the first time because it’s not perfect, then don’t try. You’ll spend time and money be very unhappy. Also spend the time and create what is called a toile or a mock up. It’s worth the time especially if you’re trying a new step like buttons, darts, zippers with hidden panels, top stitching, etc. also she forgot one very important thing. An iron. Doesn’t haven’t to be an expensive one. You need to get use to sewing seams and then ironing them open or to the back or whatever the pattern indicates. That’s one trick to help your homemade clothes from looking, well, homemade.
Great advice! I never went bougie. The most expensive sewing machine I bought was $500. I started sewing young with my mom and grandma. In about five or six years I was able to make a suit for interviews. College was almost over. This was back in the 80s. I sewed for my children, the kids at school, mother of the bride dress...thought I'd seen it all until I discovered altered couture. One thing to remember is to not force the fabric in the machine or hold it down too hard...let it take it. Good luck everyone! It's a great hobby to have your own original.
I love guides like this despite knowing that I absolutely will never follow them because I insist on throwing myself straight into the deep-end of everything I do 😅
I didn't need to know how to get started as I've been sewing for a while, but I really love watching your videos. You are so entertaining and love your enthusiasm. And you look really pretty today 😁
I started with my mums industrial sewing machine and then got a cheap 2nd hand sewing machine. I still love the vintage machines, they are robust. I love sewing but I sew whatever takes my fancy from pencil cases to complete outfits. I thrift and always look for cheap alternatives
I have a vintage Singer from 1950 and it's all metal, however I have new sewing machines too. However my vintage Singer is my favorite machine and the one I use mostly b/c it will sew anything or almost anything. I actually inherited the new machines from family members when they passed. Some of them were only a year old and never been used.
Yes! You’ve inspired me to be sewing! I have my moms old sewing machine. I’ve made two dresses so far and they both look so great! Totally beginner and simple but I’m so impressed that I actually made something that looks like clothes 😂
Almost clicked on a diff video when I sat down to watch some TH-cam after a long shift. I saw that u posted and thought, “nahhhh I need some jenna.” You’ve got soothing, healing energy, baby girl!!! 🩵
For me there is something to be said about getting a machine that will be reliable and not need adjusted or fixed every time you sew on it. For a very long time I had a antique singer that was great when it was working but I had to deconstruct it and fix it constantly and then I got a used “modern” brother machine that was the same way. A few months ago finally got a machine that works and it has made sewing so much more enjoyable. I can finish a project so quickly when I’m not fixing the machine all the time. So at least spend enough money to get a machine that will be reliable so you don’t burn out from fixing it constantly.
I agree. I have a fancy sewing machine that I bought from an estate, however, it was still a lot of money. Had that one not come available, I think I would’ve spent about $1500 on a machine just so I can have a machine capable enough to handle everything I might want to attempt, within reason. It’s definitely nice not having to do much to the machine, and the features are awesome.
Good info for the new bees Jenna! I think PJ's are a good start too. Even if they're too big or too small you can still wear them to sleep in. By the way, you looked beautiful in today's video today.
Ive found this video after buying my first sewing machine and making few small projects, and i completely agree about supplies. Ive bought literally the cheapest sewing machine and it's covers all my needs as beginner. Really, it doed great job and I don't need anything better right now, even though i enjoyed sewing. But i hate long time practicing before making projects, buut i did good enough stitches quite fast, machine literally doing everything for me
my first full sewing project for myself was a 1940s ladies shirt. it had loads of different techniques that i’m glad i learned. i cannot wear it now because i never finished any of the edges and they’re all frayed, but it was a great first project. it was made of quilters cotton 😅
I’m getting into business fashion but I want to master both sides. I’ve asked for a sewing machine for two years for Christmas but my family doesn’t think I will be able to stick to it but if they really knew me they would know I hate giving up. I took a college exam 12 times to get the right score to pass and I taught myself to ride a bike. I’m a very determined person 😂😂
this video is exactly what i need rn..... i've been wanting to make my own clothes for a while but it took me a while to actually act on it :( i made a super duper easy tube top and upsized a pair of jeans which no longer fitted me by adding panels. i thinnnkkk i did good for my first time but yeah, i'll use the free patterns to create some more, thank you jenna! say hi to jack for me
As for the scissors, be sure that if you do spend the $ on a good pair of scissors, they are only used to cut fabric. If you start to use them for paper, plastic, what have you, they will never cut your fabric the same. I cant tell you how many times my kids used my good sewing scissors ( and my wallpaper scissors) for random stuff and i had to go buy new ones. Because, even if you have them sharpened, they still dont cut the same.
As someone who just started but had some experience from school and sewing little things with my mom as a girl (like a pillow) I recommend making a muslin out of old bedsheets if possible. That way you can also test things like adding pockets or a zipper and learn from your mistakes without ruining your precious fabrik.
My adult kids and I were planning to have a little family vacation last year for June, which included a weekend renn fest. Growing up, I'd always made Halloween costumes by hand so I offered to make some simple Renn fest costumes. They were asking for more complicated things and I offhand said "I could do that, but I'll never get it done by hand-sewing in time; I'd need a sewing machine." Sure enough, Mother's Day, I was gifted a sewing machine lol. I hadn't used one since using my moms as a child so I played with it and practiced by making costumes, hemming things, making some simple stocking stuffers like pouches and arm warmers. Now I'm starting to sew myself a new wardrobe this year. I narrowed it down by deciding to sew a couple things for spring/summer, the upcoming season. I guess when summer hits I'll make something for fall, and then winter. And every year I'll just build on it. This video gives some good advice.
The first thing I made were a pair of plaid bell bottom pants in a sewing class in 7th grade. I think back at how I managed to match the plaid, although I did have the help of a wonderful teacher.
Thank you so much for this video! My grandma taught me to sew when I was younger and i recently found the sewing machine she gave me. It brought back a lot of memories but I don’t remember a ton about it. I’m hoping to take it up again and jump back in!!! ❤
I used to sew pillow covers and wall hangings in my other life, 😅, now I don’t even remember how to thread the needle! I have 2 sewing machines. A Brother , and an old Singer ..looks cool, that’s about it 😂 love your top ❤
Lovely look on you in this vid! ❤ I'm the type of person that changes focus often, so I've been a beginner at sewing for a few years as I do just one or two small projects a year (with other crafts in between). But this advice is great for other crafts, too! I got a few cheap crochet and embroidery bits for Christmas, and have been able to try both out (I suck atm, lol) without spending unnecessarily. Definitely love the idea of redoing that first project. One of my early projects was turning trousers into dungaree shorts. They weren't great, so I'd definitely do better with the next attempt. Great tips! 👍
I am just learning by helping my animal shelter make lil cat toys. But now I want to break out into making shirts and clothes since i like to cosplay. Your videos always inspire me, and I always fail to act lol but I'm running with it today!!
After a year I took the waistband off my baaaaaaaaaaaaad skirt and used some actual skill to rebuild it again. It's still ugly but at least now it's wearable. Great introduction! I still need to work out my goals though.
This is well timed. I have pretty basic sewing skills, and I already have a machine and basic supplies, but I want to start making some clothes from scratch. Mostly because I can't find the styles I want in plus size clothes. I'm definitely going to look for secondhand fabric or sheets or something to practice on.
I too learned to sew in grade 8 but completely stopped once I left high school so this is a great refresher for getting started again! Thank you for the video 🌸
Usually dont comment but I've been trying to get back into sewing and appreciate the tips and motivation I get from your content. Also, that blouse is absolutely stunning on you!
Great advice! I think alot of people (me) make that mistake of going all out and then it’s sitting in cupboard I never did seeing at school that’s cool xx
I'm 16 and for as long as I can remember, I've been interested in fashion design. My mum tells me stories all the time, from when I was a child, I'd cut up my dresses and clothing, and glue them together in different ways to make different garments. I'm in highschool, and I've really wanted to study fashion design, but I unfortunately cannot afford it.. it's really sucked, but after about a year or so, I've accepted it, and now I'm trying to save up enough for a second hand sewing machine and some cheap fabric to learn hands on, since I can't learn professionally. I've already gotten quite well versed with hand sewing, embroidery, and especially the design aspect of making clothing and fashion sketches, so all that's left is to actually learn how to make the clothes. Excited to see where this goes :)
thank you so much for this video!!! i really want to learn how to sew and i've been litterally watching sewing video's all the time, so hopefully i can start very soon on my own projects
I got high quality shear for $5-$6 from Shein. Its now my sewing holy grail for sewing supplies, they dont have EVERYTHING but what they do have is pretty good for me, and also check the comments
my university library has sewing machines to borrow, and i know public libraries have them sometimes too! (i’m in the US). Check out what resources are around you-a nice way to try before buying any kind of machine
I’m 25yrs old and I’m eager to learn and start making my own clothing. I feel a little old but I have to remind myself it’s never too late to learn something.
Great video! I do kind of disagree on getting superb at all the stitches first. Perfectionism can keep people from actually starting something. I hate practicing without a visible result. And then I see so many youtubers sew something where I would be horrified at the poorly finished hems and wonky stitches and they (and their audience!) are absolutely in awe that THEY_MADE_THIS. And I kind of love that attitude.
You look beautiful in your new blouse! I am all for sewing tips. I have sewn for fifty years, on and off, and I look for ideas everyday. You are an amazing young woman. Thank you for all you put into your channel.
Such a great video! I’m beginner getting close to intermediate…the whole “practicing” thing is HUGE… I did it until I was completely relaxed with my machine before jumping into a “real” project. What a difference! I also practiced buttonholes and zippers with bargin bin zippers. Thank you - your channel is fun and informative
I have a sewing machine on the registry but this vid is making me want to buy it now. Do you think you’ll make tutorial videos common? Like how to use a pattern and actually show us how to make the boxer shorts?
I've been a hand sewer for a while but borrowed my mum's machine to go straight in on my wedding dress... using silk chiffon..... Probably should have built up to that a bit more but it turned out fine lol
may I recommend Jack Creek Road The most common sewing machine problems. After watching his video on how to care for and properly use a sewing machine I found my sewing much less frustrating. I bought a $100 Singer at Walmart many years ago and was constantly frustrated until I watched his video. Now me and my little machine have sewn so many things including shirts with collars and cuffs and plackets. The machine just ticks along. The foot pedal on this machine is very sticky and hard to control so just when you need to finesse a seam it isn't smooth so I wouldn't recommend it but I keep working with it and when it finally quits on me I will invest in something better. So please watch his tutorial and learn to look after and use any machine properly and you will be so glad you did.
Do you have any videos about practicing stitches? I think that would be very helpful for beginners to see very basic how tos like what you learned in 8th grade c: thanks for your tips!
I started with a $99.00 singer… last me through the awkward stage.. then I upgraded… I still have to stitch rip stuff out but that’s ok…. I love your channel!❤

That's really nice to know! Everyone has been telling me to start off with a pillow case... I don't want that haha
@@907babyblue totally! I started with something big, along the way I realised that I dont know a universe amount of technic. And it was so good!

Ikea Scissors work great
even my sewing teacher was impressed
and i use them for everything (paper, bandaids etc) and they still work great

Some public libraries have sewing machines available to borrow if you want to try it out before committing to purchasing one for yourself!
They also offer classes now too!
Perfect timing.
I just started to sew today following your simple tote bag tutorial and to be very honest, it came out so nice and I'm actually waiting for it to dry after I dyed it.
Can't wait to be able to sew my own clothes!!
Isn’t it just crazy to think you MADE THAT!!! And it’s so doable. We can just make our own things that are exactly how we want

Gave my kids plaid and zig zag fabric and had them follow the lines. It helped go strait and practice turns
For me there is something to be said about getting a machine that will be reliable and not need adjusted or fixed every time you sew on it. The fifth piece of advice is something I have never heard before. It is so true! Thanks!

Thank you for this BONUS FUN Sunday Jenna post...💋♥️💋 #love
I have this $50 loops & threads sewing machine that I got at Michaels and I have never used it but I wanna learn

Jenna you are the best
Hi Jenna happy Sunday afternoon and I hope you having amazing day today and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you
I'm missing one important item: A steaming iron! 70% of getting nice seams is ironing every seam directly before sewing it....

thank you so much for this video!!! i really want to learn how to sew and i've been litterally watching sewing video's all the time, so hopefully i can start very soon on my own projects
I'm 50 years old. Twice your age. I'm just learning how to sew. And, you're absolutely right. You're never to old to learn. You've got this.
I used your tote bag tutorial to sew my first project and it turned out great! I love your videos and I can’t wait to start trying to make clothing! 💕
You're GLOWING
Great video! I do kind of disagree on getting superb at all the stitches first. Perfectionism can keep people from actually starting something. I hate practicing without a visible result. And then I see so many youtubers sew something where I would be horrified at the poorly finished hems and wonky stitches and they (and their audience!) are absolutely in awe that THEY_MADE_THIS. And I kind of love that attitude.
Love you Jenna! Thanks for the new video ❤ you’re my biggest crochet inspiration!
You look beautiful in your new blouse! I am all for sewing tips. I have sewn for fifty years, on and off, and I look for ideas everyday. You are an amazing young woman. Thank you for all you put into your channel.
I have my grandmas old machine and a week ago I made my first garment!(it was a waistcoat for my bf for prom)
Very well done! This is the most informative video you have ever put out, and I have been watching you for years. Thanks so much for this. ❤
Honestly I was like time to start sewing, what do I need? Then you pop up 💖
Today im sad but your video help me 👍🏻
In sewing class we first started drawing lines on paper and just trying to follow that!
I love this guide! I hope you decide to do one for knitting and crochet! I definitely could use some tips for knit/purl and single/double crochet.
Way to go Jenna….. the break away change locale is CRISSSSSSPPPPP!!! Way to keep the vid dynamic!
My personal step one has been watching a million TH-cam vids before even starting 😅 but this was great I love the simple steps
Thanx for the motivation....lets get started
I love watching your videos, thank you so much for your channel. Also that top and color suits you so much. You have great style.
I've been a hand sewer for a while but borrowed my mum's machine to go straight in on my wedding dress... using silk chiffon..... Probably should have built up to that a bit more but it turned out fine lol
Happy Sunday surprise video 🎉
may I recommend
Jack Creek Road The most common sewing machine problems. So please watch his tutorial and learn to look after and use any machine properly and you will be so glad you did.
you look so pretty 😭 i wanna go to a sweing class in summer ✊🏼
Do you have any videos about practicing stitches? I think that would be very helpful for beginners to see very basic how tos like what you learned in 8th grade c: thanks for your tips!
I started with a $99.00 singer… last me through the awkward stage.. then I upgraded… I still have to stitch rip stuff out but that’s ok…. I love your channel!❤
Yay!! Thank you for posting this!! Your authenticity shines through the dope information. I will be watching. :)
This was so fun 😄
Very helpful! Both my husband and myself want to learn how to sew. ❤
I just wanted to say that I love Benson ❤
LOVE your shirt! So cute ❤
