Hi, I have a technical question, and I realize most people on here could care less about this inquiry as it has no effect on painting operations, but here goes: I’ve asked Graco’s technical website and I’ve asked spray companies technical sites and no one has given me a suitable answer regarding the incredible number of warnings and packaging clips and details surrounding “not rotating the pump gear before the cover is replaced.” I’m just an old engineer. I do pay attention to directions. The new pump went in just as your instructions show and it works terrific but when I see all the excessive amount of warnings about one specific part, it makes me want to further investigate and try to figure out why. I would like a technical explanation of why rotating the gear before putting the cover back on will cause damage unless this is simply meant to be a prevention measure for running it without lubricant. If it meant, don’t remove the gear from the pump and rotate it and then put it back on the pump because of some piston timing issue that would make sense, but simply not rotating it before putting the cover on does not make sense to me because as soon as you pull the trigger the gear is going to rotate. I’m just an old engineer asking a dumb question but there’s lots of warning labels so I’m trying to figure out how this applies. If it’s simply to prevent someone from operating the pump while dry then I would think the pump replacement instructions would say that. I do realize that the printed operating instructions talk about not operating the pump without fluid but the pump replacement directions never mention this … only about how to make sure the gear doesn’t move or you wreck it permanently. I’ve asked this question of Graco and other painting supply websites and all their responses say “don’t turn the gear before putting the cover on are you might cause permanent pump failure” They never go on to explain why or how. thank you .
Hi Robert, you ask a very good question and I appreciate how you analyse things with your engineering mind 👏👏 My understanding it’s a ‘timing issue’, not an issue running the pump dry - whilst you shouldn’t run any piston pump dry, small turns of the Triax pump wouldn’t hurt the 3 pistons and packings (that’s my understanding).. I’ve always heard it’s to do with timing, and if you was to know what you was dealing with, the timing could be corrected (again, just my understanding).. what I’ve gone on to do, is ask my product representative in Graco, who has a lot more understanding and resource available to (maybe) give a more in depth explanation.. Thanks for responding so quick. Hopefully one of your Graco engineers will be able to give you an answer. I’m certain it is not a timing issue. If you study the way, the pump works rotating the gear by hand is no different than rotating it with the motor in that respect. If it were a timing issue then the motor gear would need to be somehow indexed to the pump gear. You can easily check this by marking a tooth on the motor gear and then randomly start and stop it with the switch. It doesn’t stop in the same position each time so that has no effect. I’ve disassembled an old pump and there is no timing of the pistons that can be changed by manually rotating the gear. Thanks for asking your tech folks. Maybe one of the Graco engineers can shed some light on this.
@robertyoung4326 Hi Robert, this is the additional information that I received back.. “You need to insert the pump 100% correctly. The pump assembly needs to be into the enclosure while making sure the bearing is in the enclosure and the gear meshes with the motor gear. The clip holds everything together and makes sure it aligns correctly” Regards Pete 💙💯

This is the first explanation I’ve heard from anyone that makes any sense at all regarding the clip because in fact without the clip the pump and gear can move around a little bit and possibly make it more difficult to install, but not really. I’m hoping you’ll hear something more from Graco because neither the clip nor the instructions say anything about alignment, and on the clip it clearly states “Do NOT rotate gear, Remove this Guard after installing.” Seems to me just as easy to print: “Do not remove this clip until Pump is seated” or “Do not remove this prior to pump installation”, or “Leave this clip in place to help with alignment during installation” … nope, it specifically mentions rotating the gear, and furthermore, several videos show the technicians taking extreme measures to prevent the gear from turning by holding it with one hand while removing the clip even after the pump is mostly seated. Just seems weird to me, but for anyone reading this just know I’m not losing sleep over it. I just have a mechanical mind so when I see directions that don’t fit the scenario I asked questions. If any Graco engineers ever read this maybe they’ll post the answer up. Thanks again.
So TRIAX II is not sold as a distinct upgraded version. Nice to know that Sprayman do the new version but it would have been much nicer to know that it is the new and definitely NOT the old version that is being shipped out.
Thanks for your feedback - it is an upgrade / an improvement at no extra cost - for example the HH’s purchased as a sprayer, will come with an upgraded pump and additional accessories at no additional cost - same part numbers 👍 I guess because the part numbers are the same, the identification is the same also - a rolling change is the best way for me to describe 👍 it’s a recent chat I had with SpraymanUK, that enables me to confirm all their stock is TRIAX II - I do get what you’re saying 👍 Regards Pete 💙

After using a Graco Ultra corded for a while and noticing that its performance has worsened, I have decided to change the pump following the instructions from your video. My doubt arises when looking for a Trimax 2 pump for the corded Graco Ultra, as it is not easy to find. On the other hand, it is easier to find it for the battery-powered Graco Ultra in online stores. I wonder if they wouldn't be compatible with each other since they seem exactly the same. Could you tell me if they are compatible based on your experience with this brand? Thank you in advance, greetings from Spain.
Hi Sebastian, thank you so much for watching and your kind feedback 💙💯 I’m going to check with my UK Graco distributor friends and report back for you - as I believe there is a corded version, at the start of the video I record how I choose the pump I required and there was an option for ‘corded’ - you’re right, essentially the pump differences will be minimal in design, but it’s the earthing / grounding and the ability to spray solvent and / or water, that decides which pump is required.. it is worth noting that the part numbers for the improved Triax II pumps that are the same as its original Triax predecessor 👍 all the best my friend 🇪🇸💙💯 regards Pete
Yes hi hows things i have put my head on the block here and went and order one off the guns after spend hours researching them and talkin to yourself (can't wait to get it am like a kid in a toy shop lol) just a few questions for you as to the best kind of paint to use for best results ie gloss silk am in the north of lreland and only have a few paint shop Johnson's,dulux. And the stuff i will be do will be the likes of wardrobe doors and small bits of Furniture.. thank for all your help this far.. All the best 👍
Hi Pete.I have followed your advice and purchased a triax 2 pump from sprayman! Am i becoming a fan boy?? 😂 My question is when will I know that the pump needs replacing? I have the ultra and have had it well over a year. Use it regularly but I don’t cane it so the piston doesn’t get too hot. As it stands it just keeps going. What are the symptoms of pump wear and replacement required? I know it sounds stupid to ask but there is so much negativity around these machines and I haven’t experienced that. Cheers
Hello my friend.. thank you so much for your support 🙏 ..you’re very wise in n how you use and look after your Ultra HH.. general rule to determine a pump ‘failure’.. is you would no longer be able to spray water.. just like in the cleaning process, holding the gun upside down, you could possibly prime water (see water circulating in the cup), but still with the pump upside down, switch to spray - (no guard / tip).. water would either not spray, or dribble out the end 😞 ..really appreciate your comments and contribution to PaintHQ - I will always reply (sorry about the delay on this comment).. regards Pete
I've only shot about 10 Litres through mine I'm about to do all the wood on my 4500 sq foot home so knowing once the pump fails I'll be getting an upgrade is nice, How many Litres do they reckon it'll now last?.
Hello my friend.. it’s tricky to give a definitive figure in litres, simply because the number is variable based on what material is being sprayed (viscosity) / how hard the pump has to work / pressure (speed) ..my advise is to not overwork the unit, keep to small jobs, spray at as low pressure as you can (not speed 10, certainly for long periods of time), clean effectively and store with pump armour 👍 ..I can vouch for the improvement that’s gone onto the Triax 2 👍 all the best my friend, keep in touch 🙏 regards Pete

You always make top notch content mate. Fantastic channel. Not sure what the original pump usage was stated at by Graco , so according to new triax 2 having upto 3x pump life over the original, what's a ball park gallons usage before it needs replacing? Keep up the great content fella.

I can confirm the new reengineered design is improving the life, Graco is saying by up to 3 times.. a conservative estimate could be 2 times, so double the life.. again depending on the factors I listed above 👍💙 regards Pete
Hey buddy 💙 -- Good question.. the TRIAX II featured in this video is dedicated to the 'Ultra' model only, which should only be used with waterborne paints.. To use solvents, you would need the UltraMax model, then if a replacement is required you need the appropriate (UltraMax) pump.. similarly, you couldn't put an UltraMax pump in the Ultra model, as there wouldn't no earthing capabilities, plus I believe there is other compatibility issues -- These are the 3 replacement pumps available, along with the part numbers 👍 17P185 - Triax II Replacement Pump for Ultra Handheld Corded 17P186 - Triax II Replacement Pump for Ultra Handheld Cordless 17P187 - Triax II Replacement Pump for UltraMax Handheld Cordless Ps --- don't forget to enter the competition to win the sprayer featured in this video, with it's replacement TRIAX II and all new accessories 💙 -- details are in the pinned comment 👍

If it meant, don’t remove the gear from the pump and rotate it and then put it back on the pump because of some piston timing issue that would make sense, but simply not rotating it before putting the cover on does not make sense to me because as soon as you pull the trigger the gear is going to rotate. I’m just an old engineer asking a dumb question but there’s lots of warning labels so I’m trying to figure out how this applies. If it’s simply to prevent someone from operating the pump while dry then I would think the pump replacement instructions would say that. I do realize that the printed operating instructions talk about not operating the pump without fluid but the pump replacement directions never mention this … only about how to make sure the gear doesn’t move or you wreck it permanently. I’ve asked this question of Graco and other painting supply websites and all their responses say “don’t turn the gear before putting the cover on are you might cause permanent pump failure” They never go on to explain why or how.

Hi Robert, you ask a very good question and I appreciate how you analyse things with your engineering mind 👏👏 My understanding it’s a ‘timing issue’, not an issue running the pump dry - whilst you shouldn’t run any piston pump dry, small turns of the Triax pump wouldn’t hurt the 3 pistons and packings (that’s my understanding).. I’ve always heard it’s to do with timing, and if you was to know what you was dealing with, the timing could be corrected (again, just my understanding).. what I’ve gone on to do, is ask my product representative in Graco, who has a lot more understanding and resource available to (maybe) give a more in depth explanation.. Thanks for responding so quick. Hopefully one of your Graco engineers will be able to give you an answer. I’m certain it is not a timing issue. If you study the way, the pump works rotating the gear by hand is no different than rotating it with the motor in that respect. If it were a timing issue then the motor gear would need to be somehow indexed to the pump gear. You can easily check this by marking a tooth on the motor gear and then randomly start and stop it with the switch. It doesn’t stop in the same position each time so that has no effect. I’ve disassembled an old pump and there is no timing of the pistons that can be changed by manually rotating the gear. Thanks for asking your tech folks. Maybe one of the Graco engineers can shed some light on this.

“You need to insert the pump 100% correctly. The pump assembly needs to be into the enclosure while making sure the bearing is in the enclosure and the gear meshes with the motor gear. The clip holds everything together and makes sure it aligns correctly”

This is the first explanation I’ve heard from anyone that makes any sense at all regarding the clip because in fact without the clip the pump and gear can move around a little bit and possibly make it more difficult to install, but not really. I’m hoping you’ll hear something more from Graco because neither the clip nor the instructions say anything about alignment, and on the clip it clearly states “Do NOT rotate gear, Remove this Guard after installing.” Seems to me just as easy to print: “Do not remove this clip until Pump is seated” or “Do not remove this prior to pump installation”, or “Leave this clip in place to help with alignment during installation” … nope, it specifically mentions rotating the gear, and furthermore, several videos show the technicians taking extreme measures to prevent the gear from turning by holding it with one hand while removing the clip even after the pump is mostly seated. Just seems weird to me, but for anyone reading this just know I’m not losing sleep over it. I just have a mechanical mind so when I see directions that don’t fit the scenario I asked questions. If any Graco engineers ever read this maybe they’ll post the answer up. Thanks again.
So TRIAX II is not sold as a distinct upgraded version. Nice to know that Sprayman do the new version but it would have been much nicer to know that it is the new and definitely NOT the old version that is being shipped out.

After using a Graco Ultra corded for a while and noticing that its performance has worsened, I have decided to change the pump following the instructions from your video. My doubt arises when looking for a Trimax 2 pump for the corded Graco Ultra, as it is not easy to find. On the other hand, it is easier to find it for the battery-powered Graco Ultra in online stores. I wonder if they wouldn't be compatible with each other since they seem exactly the same. Hi Sebastian, thank you so much for watching and your kind feedback 💙💯 I’m going to check with my UK Graco distributor friends and report back for you - as I believe there is a corded version, at the start of the video I record how I choose the pump I required and there was an option for ‘corded’ - you’re right, essentially the pump differences will be minimal in design, but it’s the earthing / grounding and the ability to spray solvent and / or water, that decides which pump is required.. it is worth noting that the part numbers for the improved Triax II pumps that are the same as its original Triax predecessor 👍 all the best my friend 🇪🇸💙💯 regards Pete

Yes hi hows things i have put my head on the block here and went and order one off the guns after spend hours researching them and talkin to yourself (can't wait to get it am like a kid in a toy shop lol) just a few questions for you as to the best kind of paint to use for best results ie gloss silk am in the north of lreland and only have a few paint shop Johnson's,dulux. And the stuff i will be do will be the likes of wardrobe doors and small bits of Furniture.. thank for all your help this far..

Hi Pete.I have followed your advice and purchased a triax 2 pump from sprayman! Am i becoming a fan boy?? 😂 My question is when will I know that the pump needs replacing? I have the ultra and have had it well over a year. Use it regularly but I don’t cane it so the piston doesn’t get too hot. As it stands it just keeps going. What are the symptoms of pump wear and replacement required? I know it sounds stupid to ask but there is so much negativity around these machines and I haven’t experienced that. Cheers
Hello my friend.. thank you so much for your support 🙏 ..you’re very wise in n how you use and look after your Ultra HH.. general rule to determine a pump ‘failure’.. is you would no longer be able to spray water.. just like in the cleaning process, holding the gun upside down, you could possibly prime water (see water circulating in the cup), but still with the pump upside down, switch to spray - (no guard / tip).. water would either not spray, or dribble out the end 😞 ..really appreciate your comments and contribution to PaintHQ - I will always reply (sorry about the delay on this comment).. regards Pete
I've only shot about 10 Litres through mine I'm about to do all the wood on my 4500 sq foot home so knowing once the pump fails I'll be getting an upgrade is nice, How many Litres do they reckon it'll now last?.
Hello my friend.. it’s tricky to give a definitive figure in litres, simply because the number is variable based on what material is being sprayed (viscosity) / how hard the pump has to work / pressure (speed) ..my advise is to not overwork the unit, keep to small jobs, spray at as low pressure as you can (not speed 10, certainly for long periods of time), clean effectively and store with pump armour 👍 ..I can vouch for the improvement that’s gone onto the Triax 2 👍 all the best my friend, keep in touch 🙏 regards Pete

When you can no longer spray water - just like in the video, where I’m spraying water to test, the tip guard is removed and I’m circulating water in prime and spray with the pump upside down - If pump was defective at this point, the unit would not spray water 👍

You always make top notch content mate. Fantastic channel. Not sure what the original pump usage was stated at by Graco , so according to new triax 2 having upto 3x pump life over the original, what's a ball park gallons usage before it needs replacing? Keep up the great content fella.

I can confirm the new reengineered design is improving the life, Graco is saying by up to 3 times.. a conservative estimate could be 2 times, so double the life.. again depending on the factors I listed above 👍💙 regards Pete

Hey buddy 💙 -- Good question.. the TRIAX II featured in this video is dedicated to the 'Ultra' model only, which should only be used with waterborne paints.. To use solvents, you would need the UltraMax model, then if a replacement is required you need the appropriate (UltraMax) pump.. similarly, you couldn't put an UltraMax pump in the Ultra model, as there wouldn't no earthing capabilities, plus I believe there is other compatibility issues -- These are the 3 replacement pumps available, along with the part numbers 👍
