    Glad you put it up against a basic yet common knife that’s a great edc knife. Arguably blade grind and shape are more important than steel, but heat treat of that said steel is super important too. Glad I watched this before buying. And being a spyderco fan I love seeing how impressive they can be. My dad uses a magnacut native 5 all the time at work and I’m genuinely impressed with how much crap he’s put it through and it’s still cutting cardboard and straps and stuff just fine.

    Paused on TV to comment w/phone.... I'm gonna say they both looked great, but my money is on the pm2 Wharnie I've got it in XHP and it's Scary Sharp. The precision and control you get with that forward choil and slightly downward angled tip is Amazing + Full Flat 😅.... I love Kunwu and think they're really Shaking up the game but for my money the PM2 Wharnie is absolutely slept on.... they still have black and orange XHPs in Stock! Also an absolute bananas Self Defense knife anyone who ever held one knows your like "Shit I gotta be careful I'm like a Velociraptor with this open "

    I’m not surprised. My experience with S30v has always been good. It will hold an edge longer than many of the new hyped up stainless Super steels. Vanax and magnacut as an example are lower on edge retention.

    The s30v on my spyderco knives is just built different. Far less chippy than my benchmades and yet maintain an edge far longer. I have a PM2 I’ve used lightly for 4-5 years now that’s never been stropped or sharpened that still cuts through newspaper like butter. 🤯

    wow. I was pretty confident the s30 would do well--It's honestly it's a pretty underrated steel (per Larrin Thomas, its only a tick behind m390). I think its just one of those things where people get bored with seeing stuff and it loses favor even though it never got worse or something... that said I thought it would start pretty strong, but by the end show some fall off, but dang did it hold an edge well.

    • @doodysdaggers
      @doodysdaggers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, we see it so often that we start assuming it isn’t good or “special” enough

  • @EDCandLace
    @EDCandLace ปีที่แล้ว

    Pm60 on the Chad is not nearly as wear resistant as I was thinking it would be. On the stones I can absolutely tell it's hard BUT the wear resistance isn't what I thought it would be. I would expect it to out cut s30v for sure (haven't watched video yet and haven't ran retention tests my self yet but based on the alloying properties and hardness s30v shouldnt hold a candle to it, but spydie kills it with s30v). On the stones it comes up a lot like how T15 does and responds to the stones very similar BUT cuts notably faster. Out of the 15 or so chads I've sharpened in it I can absolutely say it does NOT like to be run lower then 17dps and micro chipping on the stones was happening in the courser grits at 15dps but cleared up once I get over 400 grit. I assume 15dps will be the absolute limit for edge bevel angle but I personally believe edge fracture will happen at 15dps with use. At 17dps it is stable. I'm going to do some testing on the one I have and see where it ends up preforming on card board and sisal rope and I fully expect it to do well in all out edge life, I do not expect it to perform as well as A11 class steels. Based off how it wears on the stones and taking the RC in to account I believe performance will be roughly that of a well done hap40/rex45 in edge retention but while being significantly more finicky on the stones then either of those two steels. Sorry for the book length post but you know me! I'm detailed lol.

    • @doodysdaggers
      @doodysdaggers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting, thanks for the detailed comment! Seems like just because it’s super hard, doesn’t necessarily mean that translates directly into higher edge retention?

  • @DG__3
    @DG__3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    25 feet of cardboard???? Didn't count for the PM2 as I thought there would be more cutting for both knives than 1inch strips on the long 1/4 panel side of a medium sized Amazon box. But, for the Chad that was under 35 cuts.
    Cedric and Ada.... that's a cut test.
    This is a decent, dynamic, first impressions review. Not a cut test.
    So I will watch as such.

    It's hard to say, but on paper the PM60 should hold its edge many times better than the s30v. As for the shape of the blade, I would give preference to PM2, I like this shape visually better and in practice it is better and there is no extra weight on the tip of the blade. I also don’t like big thumb studs sometimes.

    SISAL ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE...ill send you some spydie s30v with a Lacey edge if u want :)

  • @EDCandLace
    @EDCandLace ปีที่แล้ว

    It always tickles me when I hear people talking about spyderco new releases in s30v.. the comment of "Oh its only in s30v" comes up a lot... you then hear if it was s45vn I would buy it but it's only s30v (speaking of the Millie 2 mainly) what those people fail to understand is spyderco knows their shit when it comes to S30V and there's a reason that the older S30V pm2s and para3s are the more sought after then the CQI s45vn models. S30v from spydie is shockingly good and maintains such an aggressive cutting edge.

    • @doodysdaggers
      @doodysdaggers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I think just because it’s their kind of “base model” steel, people assume it isn’t good? Weird

  • @poncho151
    @poncho151 ปีที่แล้ว

    People forget that CRK and crucible designed s30v to be a very well rounded steel exclusively made for knives. Of course spyderco has really refined their heat treat over the years and it will probably outperform most m390. That said, s30v in general is a phenomenal user steel. People these days just get too caught up in the hype and/or aren’t speaking from experience when it comes to dismissing steels like s30v.

    • @doodysdaggers

    I think for awhile there, chippy s30v from Benchmade left a bad taste in everyones mouth. But it really is good stuff if done right. Even benchmade got better after the serious dip in steel quality for a few years. Now there just all around ridiculous with prices etc.

    S30V doesn’t get the respect it deserves these days. Should be S30V, S35VN, S45VN should be standard fare for $100-$200 range of knives. Time to get rid of the VG10 and lesser steels. 14C28, Nitro V and 154CM are considered “budget”’offerings.

  • @jamesreese7111
    @jamesreese7111 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Spyderco has best heat treat in in the industry, coupled with superior ergo's and blade geometry. I personally think between two well heat treated blades that geometry and blade thickness will separate the two more than steel composition will. I'd love to see Kunwu use PM60 on the Padre with that super tall flat grind and thin edge geometry.

  • @Robbie1075
    @Robbie1075 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just finished testing at 10:38. I'm gonna guess the S30V as the PM60 has a lower edge retention rating. I don't have any real world experience with PM60 so I can only go off of the ratings and what I saw here. S30V FTW!!

  • @danpennella
    @danpennella ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I always likes my S30V and for the prices you can get that for it’s a damn steal… pun intended. Obviously Spyderco can make 440C outperform anything Microtech puts out in M390 so it’s already a bit misleading there but well done either way! Kunwu should be proud their knife is holding true against that best of the best so this was a great battle all around!
