- Today, we're diving into how we create and add movement to our commercials through the use of camera movement, lens choices, and shutter speeds.
We're doing a real deep and opening up our process!
If you are enjoying our breakdowns and want to get a better understanding of how we get to these decisions, we have a masterclass going on next week!

A really great example of how out of focus shot, motion blur and 'messy' shots can really add emotion to a scene. It's very easy, especially with gimbals, to fixate on a perfect image however they often lack any feeling. Also great use of the gimbal with slow shutter, something I'll definitely have to try.
Thanks Jonathan! Yeah, sometimes the imperfect stuff is our favourite. We often just shoot tons of extra to get more to work with in post. Let us know how it goes!
Great breakdown! Watching your videos has encouraged me to go out and shoot things outside of what I usually do. I already did so this past week with a boxing event. It was originally something I just wanted to attened but I reached out to the event organizer and asked if they needed video. Thankfully they were open to the idea and I was able to bring in a new client and add something new and different to my skill set.
That's amazing Anthony! So happy to hear that we could make a change like that. Let us know how we can help or if there's anything you want to learn about in the future that could help you in your journey.
One the best channel about cinematography/filmmaking I came across 🙌🏾
Thank you so much Brady! Glad it's been helpful, means the world.

Thanks a ton Gabriel!
I loved this! It looks like the amount of planning you guys had really streamlined everything.
Thanks Ben! Everything comes in pre-production! Appreciate it
Love your videos and explanations man! Keep up the good work
Thanks Owen! Appreciate you
That was so interesting ! Nire choice going full natural light (sometime we want to add so much light, it destroy the vibe) ! Loved the b/w breakdown
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for always sharing much love from Africa Zambia 🇿🇲
Thanks for supporting all the way out there! We appreciate it!
Thank you for taking time to share knwledge
Thanks for all the support! It helps us continue to grow the channel
That's great! Thanks for the breakdown!
What I'm wondering is: how critical is it now in cinematography (and commercials, too) when some shots can miss focus? And a lot of shake. A lot of people around me say that "hey guy, you should always have everything in focus! And don't look at those who miss, you don't have to do that", and I wonder if I really don't have to? Or is there something to justify it other than the director's idea?
Ideally you’re going to want everything to be in focus. If the director wants everything in focus, it’s their decision to want that shot in focus for post. In this case, we were okay with it falling in and out, that was the contextual choice made, so we weren’t too picky. If it shot was MEANT to be fully in focus with no shake, then ideally we’d aim for that and reshoot it until we got it right.
Appreciate you giving insight on the how and why🤝
Thanks for supporting!
Thank you... Tenfold productions !
Your welcome! Thanks for supporting
Thank you again guys!!! Keep going!!! 😍
Thanks David! Appreciate it
yes!!!!
Thanks Gabe!
Noone has never share show much for free. Thanks for your content. It really helps my career. Could it be possible to know what aperture your are ussing in every moment? That could be perfect. Thanks guys!
Thanks so much! We really try to share as much as we can for the community! It’s mostly in the 2-2.8 range. We don’t often go to 4-8 unless we want more in focus!
I would love to see a step printing how too video dude. Fantastic video by the way!🎉
Big video coming soon! Thanks
@@TenfoldProduction stoked!!!!
When creating that “step printing” effect, what do you typically put your shutter speed at?
We have a video coming soon!
What was the slow shutter setting on the fx3 . Just did some slow shutter on my fx9 for recon shoot at night recently,.hadn't used it for a while , except for time lapse . It got trendy for a while after Chunking Express , but then seems to have fallen from favor .
What was your FPS and shutter angle settings during those step printing shots? Great vid btw!
Thanks Vince! We’re going to make a full breakdown for shutter angles and step printing shortly!
@@TenfoldProduction awesome! Looking forward to it!
最高の!!
Thank you!
Do you do the same thing with cameras that have more noise at those higher base ISO? For example, I shoot with Blackmagic 6k cameras and they have more noise at the higher base ISO. More than at base. I’ve tried similar things with ND but I still get more noise than at the base. Is there something you do (more light + more ND) or do you deal with the noise later.
I’ve never shot on Sony cameras so I’m not familiar with their noise levels.
Great video!
Sony has a very clean noise level at both bases.
In most cases, it's best to stay at the lower ISO and light from there, until properly exposed. We mainly use this technique because it's a useful tool to move quickly, and we know the image will hold up in post.
In your case, if the second base isn't that clean, stick to 800 and light from there, requires more time but is a tradeoff with the body.
Question.. i noticed you shot with vintage lenses (if i’m not mistaken) & so do i. I have a set of super takumar lenses BUT i have a tough time shooting in lowlight situations & lighting is out of my budget rn. Any advice on how to perfect that?
In most cases, adding more lighting will solve the issue. Once you’ve done what you can with your settings and lenses, you really have to add some light and shape it.
Love the breakdown! Thought the decision on number of takes / which takes you choose for the edit was really interesting
Curious what the monitor setup is for the directors?
Thanks Dan! We have a smallhd 702 I believe!
where is the final video?
All posted on our channels under uploads! Appreciate you
