- Black locust has a wonderful party trick which we exploit in this video giving some of the most amazing woodturning you will see this year. We turn the bowl using a UV light and the effect is stunning.

I recently cut down a beautiful Black Locust tree…… Two foot in diameter, solid all the way through……. I was so happy to get all of that beautiful wood……. I kept every piece of that log❤

Hey Mark, I’m 72 years old so I am a child of the 60’s. I had every black light poster out and a 3 foot black light. We would smoke that weed and trip out in my bedroom.

I had a piece of that wood. I don't remember what I made, and I don't remember who I gave it to. It was a wow ago. I heard about this wood glowing like this maybe a year ago. I don't know know who to tell that they can have extra fun. Haha. Thanks for sharing. See you next time

I'm 60 & I remember those cool black lights. My older brothers would smoke their stuff listening to the best of the 60"s Rock & Roll.
By the way, I bet those wood chips would make an excellent addition to anyones landscape at night with black lights strategically placed. Refresh with new chips as needed.
I love Robinia/ Black locust and it is my favourite wood to turn especially as I was given a whole tree with numerous burrs.

I love black locust, they grow fast with good rot resistance, bees love them, they make some nice acacia honey, and the wood grain is beautiful.

Some 50 years ago, my Dad and I were cutting Black Locust for the fireplace and found a worm track in our cut in the shape of an M. He was named Merlyn and I'm Michael and we both went by Mike.
Wow that was some work by the worm! I hear Black Locust burns very well.

never knew black locust fluoresces. very cool. If you are ever in the desert looking for florescent rocks at night, if it's orange and moves, its a scorpion!

So interesting! When I was a kid back in the late fifties we peeled black locust for fence posts here in Kentucky. They lasted for ever. They are so abundant but I knew nothing of this property!
Well now you do, it is a great wood for posts, it just lasts so long!

Haha I do have a system, I find space for them on a shelf and hope I remember what it was when I find them again 😀.
Another fascinating video !!! I never knew wood had a glow to it !! I used to work in a nuclear power generation plant in Maryland, USA. I was always fascinated by THAT glow as well. Really cool stuff Mike !!

I know! There are about 70 different types that do it but this is the best 😃
I use uv glow chemicals to color and glow up glass. Natural fluorescence is totally new to me. This is so cool. And I looked on eBay and there's good amounts of green and dry pieces a plenty. Might have to gift a wood worker some

Black locust is my wonder wood. I have no idea why here in North America it’s not more commonly known and used. My friend has a deck that’s over 30 years old and it’s still sound timber. I love it for all my green wood working handles. It’s the most harvest firewood on my property. The fact it grows so fast and has all of its other qualities just amazing me
This is my first time turning it and I love it. Luckily I have managed to buy a lot more so I'm sure I'll be having a lot more fun in the future. All the best, Mike

Just picked up four big chunks of Black Locust that was recently (2 days ago) cut down. I was going to let it sit for a few months before I turned it but you’ve convinced me to rough turn it sooner rather than later. Looks like I have a weekend in the shed ahead of me! Lol.

I've lived most of my life with black locust trees and love them for their shade and character, but never knew they fluoresced.
I know, it's not really what you expect a tree to do lol 😂
I get Tim Burton vibes from this when you're turning! i.e. The scene at Oogie Boogie's place in The Nightmare Before Christmas, or the blacklight scenes in Beetlejuice. Very cool!

I’m fascinated with the fluorescent woods as well. Staghorn sumac is one of my favorite grain patterns and colors… too bad it doesn’t grow any larger than it does
I've heard of it but never had the opportunity to turn any.
@@MikeHolton check it out. It is beautiful wood but doesn’t get very big. The largest I have ever seen is about 6” in diameter and that was huge for my area (southeastern USA).

I love the smell of black locust! I cut up a downed tree while visiting family in Massachusetts and flat rate mailed some bowl blanks and little slabs to my house in AK. So far I’ve made a small bowl and a letter opener. While letting the wood dry in my garage it oxidized to a vibrant green on the surface. first I thought it was mold but after carving through it I realized it was the wood itself turning color. Have you ever seen that?
Not with mine, it's more yellow than green 😀

Nope that is the natural quality of black locust wood, there are over 70 other species that have some florescence but this is the most.

I've been turning for over 40 years. I have turned a ton of Black Locust. I had no idea it would glow under a black light. Great fun. I will have to try it one of these days. Thank you.

Hi Mike, How COOL is this??!!!! Fluorescent wood. Who new? I am amazed. If I owned such a piece I would need to get used to living in the semi-darkness as I would like to see it under the Black light to enjoy the beauty of the wood. Remarkable, truly remarkable.
