I think u should travel to Harish Chandra Modak in Shyambazar best for puri in the morning and afternoon and evening luchi they used to give this in a banana leafs and there sweet is very good and in Kalighat Tarun Niketan spice hotel they use to give lunch in banana leafs too and must try mutton there and both the hotels more than 100 years old !!
You guys got us all kolkataians hooked with the authenticity and sheer passion for our food culture and love. I became a fan yesterday when I first came across your videos! And today you earn a life long fan and a sub!!
Grew up in South Kolkata and all of these places are popular but not hugely publicized. So great that you guys brought out the nooks nd corner small shops. Like the kachori store in gariahat market is open only for breakfast in the morning. And to all those comments worried about food hygiene and gloves, no major food safety outbreak happended in kolkata and even if they look shabby they are not dirty. If gloves are not changed often or used properly, then they are useless.

1. There are hundreds of better places to have kolkata kachori and not luchi (With 10 times better hygine, 2-3 times extra price approximately), before visit next time, try to check some kolkata vlogs done by youtubers accross the world and not to rely on BBC solely. You'll get much better experience. 2. Kolkata offers same food, from lowest prices to standard to high prices. (Hygine comes accordingly). To maintain hygine a cost is added and for daily intake, it crosses the price barrier for locals as the earning is low or limited. 3. Eat chowmein not in chinatown but in any bengali/kolkata restaurant, where you get bengali-chinese spice blend chowmein. Pure Chinese food comes with less spice therefore less in taste. 4. Phuchka stalls you'll get in every 15-20 minutes walk, and most of them are tasty, all have their own different taste. All are good. Due to food type it's easier to use hand and wash hands frequently than to use gloves. and there are international articles , you can find it on web. You can just check the other things, the plate, the water, the entire shop and mostly the locals, who are buying, how many people etc. Have fun.
For the record I didn’t say it wasn’t hygienic or worse, just different than what we’re used to, as you describe. I’ll never not eat street food in India. You’d have to be crazy to pass it up!
@@StephandPete I am sorry if it means something wrong, I just tried to explain what I found missing in your experience. I just explain how it could be better. Thats all.
Honestly it is about the habits and not about the price, a shop may be in the southern part of India selling food within the same price range has way better hygiene. If we have little bit of acceptance we might be able to understand hygiene is not luxury which comes at a better price point but a practice, basic hygiene can be and needs to be maintained across all places.
