It's the only place in India that has a place in top cities in the world for Street Food. Not just the food but also related history, tales , the affordability , and the connection with people.

Grew up in South Kolkata and all of these places are popular but not hugely publicized. So great that you guys brought out the nooks nd corner small shops. Like the kachori store in gariahat market is open only for breakfast in the morning. And to all those comments worried about food hygiene and gloves, no major food safety outbreak happended in kolkata and even if they look shabby they are not dirty. If gloves are not changed often or used properly, then they are useless.

    • @StephandPete

I’m so glad you get it! Of course there are the places on every list but it’s fun to try these. And I wouldn’t have eaten it if I didn’t feel comfortable with the hygiene- I know they are taking care! No sense in worrying too much.

    1. There are hundreds of better places to have kolkata kachori and not luchi (With 10 times better hygine, 2-3 times extra price approximately),
before visit next time, try to check some kolkata vlogs done by youtubers accross the world and not to rely on BBC solely. You'll get much better experience.
    2. Kolkata offers same food, from lowest prices to standard to high prices. (Hygine comes accordingly).
To maintain hygine a cost is added and for daily intake, it crosses the price barrier for locals as the earning is low or limited.
    3. Eat chowmein not in chinatown but in any bengali/kolkata restaurant, where you get bengali-chinese spice blend chowmein.
Pure Chinese food comes with less spice therefore less in taste.
    4. Phuchka stalls you'll get in every 15-20 minutes walk, and most of them are tasty, all have their own different taste. All are good.
Due to food type it's easier to use hand and wash hands frequently than to use gloves.
and there are international articles , you can find it on web.
You can just check the other things, the plate, the water, the entire shop and mostly the locals, who are buying, how many people etc.
    Have fun.

Honestly it is about the habits and not about the price, a shop may be in the southern part of India selling food within the same price range has way better hygiene. If we have little bit of acceptance we might be able to understand hygiene is not luxury which comes at a better price point but a practice, basic hygiene can be and needs to be maintained across all places.

I grew up in a neighbourhood very close to China Town & can narrate the story of how Singara chow came into existence.. Basically these are Wonton noodles but one of the line chef’s who used to work at one of the many restaurants in China Town & decided to open his own stall at a locality called Gobra(very close to CT) knew that Wonton noodles won’t fly with the locals hence came along Singara chowmein.

have you even been outside kolkata ? I am sure you have been been.
Kolkata is not the best place for street food. Kolkata street food revolves around Biriyani , Chowmein, Roll and Phutka . We dont have the variety and our hygiene standard is the lowest.
Outright Bangkok and Pattaya and few other cities in Thailand are the best for street food.
In India , the best street food is sold in Indore . Yes most of the food sold is veg but the variety is huge.

    Such a lovely episode guys!
You guys have done a very good job,
Other than street food, if you ever want to experience proper bengali food then there is so many restuarents like 6 bullygunge place, kasturi, babu culture, they will offer you proper Bengali thali of veg or non veg , and other than that Bengal are really famous for sweets , so many kind of sweets
If you are staying during winter, in Bengal, on that you will get new jaggery in bengali we called nolen gur, which come from Date, and pithe, puli, patisapta so many kinds of sweets some days explore this too,
Once if you will the hot rasgulla, it will directly melt in your mouth, you will feel like a heaven ,
And again guys thank you for visiting our city Kolkata (the city of joy)

    You guys did great👍👍
The best thing about Kolkata is, while there are some famous street food stalls (thanks to youtubers and influencers!), but there are so many unknown normal street food vendors who creates magic with their creations.
BTW, there's another famous chef from India, Ranveer Brar who is from Lucknow, but was brought up in a Bengali colony (in my opinion, the best culinary experience that you can have are at these two cities). You can follow his content on Indian food as well. A lot of traditional Indian cuisines have interesting stories and history associated with it- which is always great to listen.

I was in Kolkotta long time ago in the summer of 1963 and visited my grand uncles mansion in south Kolkotta at Rash behari Avenue and with my cousin used to have shangada with puris most delicious street food but those days closest street food was from
a nearby shanty store but was yummy delicious like 60 years ago. Haven't had since I'm in Los Angeles for the last 45 years. I grew up in Matunga Mumbai and no puris and shangada in Mumbai because that dish was a Bengali delicious dish and not Maharashtrian cuisine in Mumbai then and even now

Singhara has two meanings. One, a samosa, second, water chestnuts. I think the noodles must also consist of water chestnuts, hence, the name.
